Neela was calmer now, not anything even approaching a state that could be called “calm” but she wasn’t openly homicidal any more at least, most of her anger bleeding away into worry for the pups. Despite her increased worry the pups actually seemed somewhat better now, as though her mood improving had helped them. Well three of them were better at least. Isla had fallen into a deep sleep and lay motionless, only the slight movements of her breathing to show that she was alive, but the other three were more lively, squirming around where she held them and pawing at her fur.

With the pups done feeding Neela had shifted back into Optime form, sitting cross legged in the room she had claimed and piling the pups into the hollow made by her legs. Almost instinctively the pups seemed to have formed protectively around Isla, pushing her to the bottom of the pile where it was warmest. Or maybe they just wanted to be on the top and Isla wasn’t resisting; it was hard to tell with pups so young. Either way curious – if slightly timid – squeaks were much more calming than panicked screaming so Neela was feeling better about the pups now.

Better didn’t equal good but there was nothing else that Neela could do. The lower levels were the safest place but not completely safe, but anything that she could do to make them safer would require her to leave the pups alone down here, something which she wouldn’t do. Unable to make a choice either way Neela was forced to just sit in the darkness helplessly, listening to the howling wind above as it buffeted the courthouse.
