Tranquillity was broken, and for the first time he was in free fall.

It would be easy for him to blame himself, for he should have been here. His plan had failed and she wouldn’t be there to throw blessed colour into his life anymore. China’s first miscarriage had been horrible and had dangerously weakened her. She had wanted to be a mother with such passion, but they had both known that she was too fragile – too physically weak to risk her own life to birth new. That had been his standpoint at least, and when a group of Salsolans had gone to Freetown, he’d sent a special request along with the ebony Pandemic. What China didn’t know didn’t harm, but somehow she must have realized the true effects of the herbal infusions he’ started giving her. It hadn’t been to improve health, but to prevent life from blooming within her womb. But still, after some time, her belly began to swell.

The unmated couple had kept to themselves lately, and he realzed now that it had been a mistake not to involve others. But it was worthless knowledge now, when nothing could be done to fix this terrible thing. Yet, still, the hollowness within had been replaced with seething agony as he watched the bloodied scene he’d come home to. He should have been here – he hadn’t been there for her. The silvery creature that had filled his heart with lovely content would never again sing him her beautiful song.

The blonde finally moved from the entrance of their shared home and slowly walked over to the still form of his beloved, and crouched down beside her dead pixie face. She had been ripped apart and bled dry by those universally described as innocent. Innocence did not murder like this -- only wicked evil! There was only loss, here. Yet, China’s frozen lips somehow still smiled, and unshed pearly tears still lingered in the corners of half-lidded dove eyes blessed with summer sky hues, now unmoving and empty. Itachi could felt his throat thicken, yet when he lifted a hand to stroke against the blockage, there was nothing. This had to be emotion alone.

Gravity suddenly seemed a cruel thing, and his limbs felt heavy and shackled. His hand fell down to settle against the left side of his chest, where his heart went on and on. But without her presence to enrich his existence, the thought of continuing seemed impossible. Would he really want to live in a world knowing she was not a part of it? That they could never be together again. His airways closed and he gasped, his own claws digging into his chest as if attempting to rip out the agony swelling within. He had always known there could be no life without eventual death, but it couldn’t end like this. Not like this..

Scarlet stained fingers brushed along her still blushing cheeks, and his voice beckoned for her to return to him -- not to leave him. But there was no warmth beneath the fake smooth silkiness of her pelt. There was no nothing. She wasn’t here anymore. "My love..." This was just another body without an owner. But he couldn’t accept this, because she was his China and she was the only other living creature in the world that he had ever loved. She was larger than life, and now she had abandoned him. He had sworn to protect her and failed. It was nothing short of unbearable, and he still couldn’t breathe.

Only when he heard the unsuspecting, mewling sound did he regain some sense. He was guilty in completely forgetting about the ones that were at fault. In slow motion, he leaned across his dead love’s stiff body, and gently removed the stiff arm holding the soft duvet made from rabbit pelts in place. He lifted the cover and let sunset eyes of quiet rage wash over the two small creatures nuzzled up against her belly. Despite their age, he could already see the displays of mixed gold and silver. They had murdered his most treasured gem. He should hate them, but couldn’t. After all, they were all that was left of her.

The grief struck man’s hands trembled as he lifted his daughter and son away from the still corpse of their mother. Carefully, he wrapped them in the duvet and against the flourishing warmth of his pale chest. He was taken with an unexplainable feeling as both small puppy forms responded to his warmth and nuzzled closer against his heart. It was still going on and on, though he could see the signs of a new morning ahead. The man slowly rose with his children safely tucked in his arms. China’s dead lips still smiled, and though he could not smile with her, he knew that she hadn’t been alone when she died. She had loved and been loved. Therefore, he would love too. Itachi and his China would not be parted forever, he was certain. "We shall meet, I know." One day.

With a last lingering glance to the body of the only true love he’d ever known, he turned away and exited the building. His feet were auto-piloted, carrying him to the home of the witch that had helped China with her first miscarriage. He was positive that she would be able to assist. His children could not be permitted to perish together with their beautiful mother.
