Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

The blind female sat outside of her house, the wooden bench she had made months before acting as a support. With the hurricane and the aftermath, Hotaru hadn't had time to think about her lost children. Yet, with a moment to herself and time to think, the memories of the pups' demise came rushing back like a tidal wave. Aiden and Aysun were gone, taken from her by a mere contagion. Hotaru placed her head in her hands, leaning over slightly as she massaged her aching forehead. She couldn't do this anymore. She couldn't let herself drown in sorrow.

The grieving mother had spent weeks in her deep depression. Hotaru had pushed away her mate and wrongfully blamed him. She had attached herself to a puppy that didn't even belong to her and forced the young female to bear the weight of her pain. Hotaru hadn't carved anything since then and the hurricane had destroyed most of her art. What was left had been contributed to the trading trip. Being made a council member had acted as a sort of wake up call, telling the grey wolf to get out of her slump. Yet, Hotaru didn't know how. When her family had been killed she had gone on angry rants and broken anything she could get her hands on. She had punched walls and floors till her fists bled and rocked herself to sleep at night. But she didn't have the liberty of acting like a selfish pup. Nor did she have her lessons on being blind to keep her mind occupied and away from the death of her puppies.

So, with no way to cope and an unsure path forward, Hotaru sat lonely and sad on what she assumed was a beautiful autumn day. Fawkes and Kelia could be heard chasing each other through the air as they cried out joyfully. A subtle breeze brought cool air through the village, dragging along a myriad of scents and sounds. Somewhere close by was a pig, but Hotaru didn't have the energy to go hunting. Bringing her head out of her hands, she sighed and leaned back against the bench. Her hair draped down her back slightly and fell off of her shoulders. She had allowed it to grow to shoulder length, a mistake that should be fixed, if only she had the drive to do so.
