the KILLING lights

Every inch of every body had exerted as much effort as could be imagined. When she thought her muscles would ignite, she dug deep within her gut and pulled more energy to the surface. Each wolf fell into place, they minds working together to steer the single mass that corralled the chosen doe, then one by one the many mouths of the single beast took their place along its hide.

Anu fell with the deer, watching that her limbs were not crushed by its weight she let her mouth take its place. Ivory teeth, sharp as needles, strong as steel and thirsty as desert sand sank into the throat of the doe. Kansas held her still, presenting it’s supple neck for any beast to take. It was a knife slicing butter, piercing the jugular and tasting the blood that escaped from the thick walled vein.

Her jaw locked instinctively, the muscles tense and unyielding. It was painful at first, but it soon subsided and her face grew numb. Like an iron safe her teeth closed, crushing all that it held between it. The beast beneath her died silently and quickly, but still she held to mouth to its gullet. She knew the others would move, to begin the feast or just to catch their breath, but she remained still, laying against it s chest, her breaths harsh and forced through her nostrils. She had committed to slaying the creature, and until certain she would remain in place.

The midnight wolf continued to nip at the deer as the rest of the hunting party joined in. Even though she didn't see her, she could sense that Naniko had taken to biting at one of the doe's back legs. Then everything seemed to happen at once. Jazper lunged and took down the the animal in a heap of flesh and fur. Savina had to dodge legs and razor sharp hooves as their prey crashed to the ground. The point of one hoof did manage to nick her shoulder and a soft yelp came from her throat. Her legs were still running almost full speed so she ran a bit ahead of the kill before circling back around.

She saw Kansas grip the back of the animal's neck to keep it still, and then Anu come to end the creature's suffering. It was clear to her that the main part of the job had been done, so she walked over to join the cream male's side. Pink tongue hung out of her mouth as she panted hard from the exertion. Head swiveled to inspect where the hoof had hit her. A little stream of blood ran through her fur, but it was just a small cut, nothing to be worried about. Before she could even think about eating she needed the moment to catch her breath.

last round?

It was hard to get through a hunt without someone getting at least a little bit scraped up, and she thought that they had done pretty well today. When the others got the deer all the way to the ground Naniko hung back to watch. They were all really good at this, hunting, working together. She felt proud of them, of all of them. Each wolf had played a part in bringing the animal down, and each one would leave here with a full stomach.

Naniko went to Anu as soon as everything was over, nudging and nuzzling the other on the cheek. She'd done a really great job too, with leading the hunt, and she wanted her to know it. She looked toward the deer--it would still be warm--then back to Anu. She would eat first, as the leader, but beyond that she didn't know. Savina was her second-in-command, and though Anu had led the hunt she wasn't nearly as highly ranked as the dark wolf.
