Set at Sunflower Sunsets.[html]

SOMEWHERE THERE'S A CRACK IN THE SIDEWALK
BIGGER THAN THE SHADOW OF DEATH IN THIS TOWN

It was surprising to see some of the sunflowers standing intact as if it were the late summer months and they had just bloomed. Most, however, had finally succumbed to the November weather and were no longer standing at their three meter height. Ryan lifted a dying sunflower head and twirled it in her fingers. It was amazing just how large they could become. This one in particular must have been close to 25 centimeters or so in diameter. She let it slip from her fingers, falling to join its detached brothers and sisters. She found such beauty in flowers, even when they weren’t in full bloom. She had only lived through one spring, but it was her favorite season. Watching the buds blooms into beautiful arrays of color – how breathtaking. At the moment, however, Ryan’s plaid dress was about the only thing to offer much vivacity in the color spectra.

Somehow both children had decided to follow their father today, he was unsure if they thought this was some grand adventure or if they really were interested in exploring the lands. His stormy eyes remained sharp as he watched them stalking one another through the grasses, the giggles and shrill shrieks were gone from the game, unlike how they'd been a mere month ago. Suddenly he heard a soft patter of laughter coming from behind him as he sighed, well, it was almost removed from the games that would soon evolve into hunting and stalking skills. He smiled as he poked his head into the grasses, catching sight of another silvery blue pelt moving off towards the scent of her sibling.

Slowing pulling back from the meadow he caught the scent of another in the area, causing his stomach to churn as he realized just who it was. He lifted his head high, looking for the girl, not wanting another awkward run-in with another with the children present. His heart pounded in his chest as he walked along the edge of the meadow towards the fields of sunflowers that had once blossomed so brilliantly in the thousands. He caught a bright flash of color in the mist of the field that once was, his eyes halting his body as he just stared at her, forgetting totally of the children that were still stalking and pouncing in the fields.

Clearing his throat as he realized that he'd been staring for some time before he called out softly. "Ryan?" There was no way in getting around the subject as they were probably at this moment being stalked by the living breathing truth. He stepped forward into the field she stood in, letting her atleast see who it was who'd found the girl.

She turned, hair twirling by her sides as she came to face DaVinci. She was surprised to have run into him here, considering they were relatively close to Inferni. Last time they had talked, she had felt they’re relationship take a hit – Inferni wasn’t exactly a paradise for the steel colored boy. Either way, a smile found her lips and she rushed through the dead and dying sunflowers towards him, her colorful dress fluttering over the discarded yellow petals as gently as a cloud passing overhead.

She thought she heard other voices, but couldn’t be certain as the sound of her blood was pumping so loud in her ears. "DaVinci," she breathed, finally making it to him. "Why’re you all the way out here?" And she was certain she heard rustling in the grasses the stretched out around them.

His stormy eyes weren't lying to him as it seemed that the girl had in someway forgiven him for his dislike of her clan. When he witnessed her form coming running towards him a weak smile graced his lips. To hear his name roll off her tongue was enough for him but the words she asked reminded him of why he had been on this trip. He cast his eyes off to the side as he cleared his throat and instead of answering Ryan he called to another. "Sky, Ty.. come out please.." He tried to keep his voice strong as he waited for the two to appear.

It didn't take too long for the young pups to come tumbling out of the fields and into the patchy grasses where the two younger adults were standing. Skylar and Tyrone moved meekly as though they knew that this was something serious, they had been on their way to visit Inferni's borders as was so it didn't surprise him. The two figures settled down beside one another as DaVinci's eyes turned to search Ryan's face as he explained. "Ryan, I want you to meet Skylar and Tyrone.." He didn't want to say the words because he knew it would make it all the more real, but he couldn't lie to her either. "They're my kids.." The words seemed stupid since anyone who looked at Skylar could tell she was his daughter.. but he had to tell her the truth and just hope she could understand.

There was something in his eyes, and she tried to study them and determine what that look was. When he called out for the two kids to join them, Ryan searched the grasses as the rustling noise of their small bodies revealed their existence. She smiled to them, offering a warm, "Hello," before looking to DaVinci. She could easily tell that they were related, but she couldn’t help let her jaw fall slightly as he dropped the news. "Your kids?" She replied, looking to the little girl who was almost a clone of her father. She offered the kids another smile as if to disguise her dismay, before looking back to DaVinci. "But," she muttered, not sure where to begin. "Well… who’s their mother?" Had DaVinci been with someone all along?

Tyrone and Skylar sat and watched the two adults as the words floated back and forth other them. Skylar smiled shyly and hide her beige eyes from sight as the lady offered her a hello. She granted the stranger a muffled return, "Hi..." as she knew her brother was probably just staring quietly at the woman being his moddy and protective self. She nudged her father with her nose and gave a soft whimper when the stranger started asking more pressing questions about their mother. Tyrone licked her ear softly as she heard him move to stand over her.

DaVinci had watched his children for only a moment until Ryan spoke again, he could tell he'd hurt the woman much deeper than anything he'd done before.. and yet he was innocent in a way.. this time atleast. He shook his head as he tried to find the right words. "Rhae was a friend.. before I left for Ireland." The soft whimper from Skylar drew his eyes away as he lowered his head to nuzzle the child that was still clearly upset at being left behind. He sighed as he rose back up, those stormy eyes gazing sadly at Ryan as he continued. "The life she chooses to lead is no life for children.. so she brought them to me.."

He wished that she wouldn't look at him so.. "I came to Inferni to try and tell you.. but I ran into Gabriel." His conversation with the leader had been strange enough. There hadn't exactly been bitter words between the two though the golden eyed man had found something funny in the situation DaVinci was caught between, a woman he was head over heels for and his newly aquired duties to family. He was a child afraid and only she could make things right.. but his heart pounded in his chest scared to death to eve hope.

She didn’t know what to say, so she didn’t say a word. All she could do was look from DaVinci, to Skylar, to Tyrone. It was easy to see the resemblance, but she couldn’t help but wonder what their mother must have been like. Was she young, beautiful, kind? She looked back to DaVinci, searching for words to say, but failing still. She wasn’t sure what to do next. Out of all things, this would have been the last she would have expected to ever happen. To make matters worse, the questions she wanted to ask were probably not the best to say in front of the children. She didn’t know their relationship with their mother, but she knew they must have loved her. Ryan thought of Lene for a moment, before shaking her head slowly, her honey colored hair swishing silently by her shoulders. Now what, she wanted to ask him, but couldn’t bring herself to. What she finally mumbled she hardly realized she was asking… "Do you still love her?"

She had bit him to the bone with the frail words she muttered. He knew he'd wounded her deeply but how was he ever to expect the world to come back around and while once he took lovers and enjoyed the company of sensual friendships.. but he never expected to come to these lands and find the girl who could take his breath away and with the simplest of gestures have him walking like a puppy on a string. His life had never been fair to him until he'd walked away from these shores.. it only seemed right that only when he returned that the trail would pick up again and the bitternes of it all would be laughing like jackals in the distance.

He lowered his head, his ears pinned back against his skull as he answered truthfully. "She was my friend.. I'll always love her.." He could never love Rhae like he might love the one he'd take for life but he could love love her like a friend, like he loved his family and his pack. His eyes rose to gaze at her as he whispered. "I never gave her my heart.." He was helpless, his voice pleading as his heart pounded harshly in his eardrums.

SOMEWHERE THERE'S A CRACK IN THE SIDEWALK
BIGGER THAN THE SHADOW OF DEATH IN THIS TOWN

Her cheek was damp and she quickly turned away, wiping the moisture from her face and looking out, over the field of dying sunflowers and towards the trees that hide a small Amish village just beyond the horizon. In some ways, she wanted to run away and be alone – curl into a ball and just sleep the week away. She didn’t know why this hurt her so much, but she was torn. This girl was obviously a past love – Ryan had known DaVinci shorter than his children had been alive. She couldn’t hold something like that against him. But still, the thought that he was a father scared her. He had responsibilities – he couldn’t play along in her make believe perfect world anymore. They had to play by the rules now. That was terrifying.

She looked back to him, unable to bring herself to look into his eyes. She knew there was hurt there too – there had to be, since she wasn’t exactly embracing the news. She was fairly good with children, so it would be no problem to Ryan if she saw more of the two. Things would be different now, she could already tell. The chemistry had been changed. It wouldn’t be the same and that scared her.

She wandered to him, looking to her feet as she did until she finally reached DaVinci. She slipped her arms around his waist, resting her cheek against his chest and taking in his warmth. She didn’t care that his children were there. She just needed some reassurance that things were going to be okay. Somehow, this made things just that much better. And then she said something that she had been thinking about a lot lately. She wanted to know whether or not what she felt was true. And right now, it felt sincere. "I love you."

The tears that had slowly began a trail along her cheeks broke his heart and yet she still remained at such a distance that there was nothing he could do. The silvery blue boy wasn't even sure Ryan would allow him if given the chance. She'd turned away from him and he felt the quiver building in his throat as he swolled down the emotions. They were at a crossroad he knew had been coming since the moment Rhae had appeared with the two in tow... now though he was so afraid of losing the girl he'd barely begun to know that the pain was unbareable.

He felt the pressure of Skylar and Tyrone move away from his side as the two disappeared into the fields once more. DaVinci knew that his son had been the motion behind their sudden disappearance as he found Ryan had moved ever so slowly to where he stood. Her arms around his waist was enough to cause his heart to pound like a jackhammer as he felt his own tears began to fall. One hand brushed against the cheek that was turned towards the world as he lowered his head, his lips brushing softly against the tops of her ears as he heard those words that he was so afraid of hearing yet so wanted to.

Dropping soft kisses upon her ears he murmured softly. "and you.. I love you." and as much fear that was associated with those words there was just as much tenderness. He knew the path that they walked upon was never going to be easy but if she would travel down that lane beside him then they would be able to brave the rocky road ahead.

She gripped onto him tighter, never wanting this feeling to slip away – this sense of protection, of importance, of love. She didn’t want to lose any of it and in some ways she was scared that she could. She wanted to run away and leave DaVinci in the past so there would never be the possibility that she could hurt him, or he her. But that wasn’t like the Inferni hybrid. She had lived her life on the edge of danger and risk without so much as a care in the world. Her carefree spirit had brought her so far – had kept her safe in some ways. DaVinci made things different – he made her feel beautiful. She loved that.

She looked up to him, tears brimming in her crimson gaze, but out of joy than anything else. With a soft, swift kiss, Ryan wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer.

The male was afraid, he had no clue where in the world this path they'd chosen would take them. He'd always walked a line between the coyotes and the wolves and yet he'd been forced to take one side over the other for his children. The life of Inferni was no place for his own broad, especially considering those they were taught to hate were their own family... and yet here the ruler over life was laughing as another twist was thrown in the loop. To find love within the very clan he'd denied. He wasn't even going to ask why, he wasn't even going to attempt to try.. Here and now was all they had, perhaps it always would be.

He was glad that his son and daughter had snuck off, though he was sure they were probably still watching from some location waiting and wandering what had just happened to their world. The soft touch of her lips was too much as she pulled him closer. His lashes brushed against hers as he could feel the remains of the warm tears that had claimed those beautiful orbs only moments before. The raw emotion that caused his heart to pound against his chest was too much as he brushed her hair from her face, softly murmuring words he couldn't even comprehend as he studied the beauty before him.

With the kids gone from sight, it was hard for Ryan to even think that moments ago DaVinci had just revealed that he was a father. If they could just stay like this for a few moments longer – the warmth, the perfection… But she knew that it wasn’t entirely possible. She looked up into his beautiful steel blue eyes, though the seemed to be brighter to her – almost cerulean. "Davinci," she whispered, tasting the words on her lips and wanting them to linger indefinitely. His touch mystified her with each gentle stroke.

"Your kids," she had to finally say, bringing back the reality of the situation. Flushing slightly under the rusty fur of her cheeks, she leaned gently away from his grasp. Looking around at the littered sunflowers and drying grasses, she could only imagine where their onlookers must have been hiding. "Are they staying with you?" She asked, a smile finding her face. In reality, she didn’t know where DaVinci himself was staying. All she knew was that Inferni couldn’t be a part of his life, but was a staple in her own.

The sound of his name on her lips was almost too much as the boy was lost in her scent, the gentle murmurs and soft brushes. His eyes gazed into her crimson orbs, the depths of those pools pulling him in as a weak smile appeared upon his maw. He was a father first and yet he was hers as well. His world was split in two and he was far from close to learning just how to juggle it all. "Ryan.." he said softly, lowering his face to where his lips brushed her's once more before she brought the reality crashing down again.

Pulling away as he laughed guiltily, he let her escape from his grasp as he watched her searching for the two he knew wouldn't appear until he called for him. The words she asked made him turn his face back to her as his arms enveloped her waist again, "Of course they are.." he said, sobering slightly as his eyes searched hers, his voice growing softer as he admitted the truth. "We're staying in Phoenix Valley. My mother's the Matriarch there.." The lands weren't bad and neither were the packmates. While she seemed to blossom in Inferni where he would wilt.. he'd found roots in the one place he never thought he would, under the watchful eyes of his own mother.

"Oh that’s good, they’ll have more family to be around," she said, looking out into the grasses as if in hopes to catch a glimpse of the children that had gone off to play. Though this made the situation slightly different, it didn’t change her feelings for him. She was still helplessly head over heels for the steel colored coyote. "It’s nice to have family," she told him, looking back towards his face with a warm smile. She knew of the stories he had told her when they had first met, but family was a pretty important thing to Ryan. She thought it was the right move on his part for the children to be near their grandmother, since they now didn’t have a mother and only had DaVinci. She knew how hard it was to be left with one parent.

"I’d like to come by sometime if they wouldn’t mind." She knew that some of the wolf packs were biased towards Inferni and its members, but she was really hoping she would be able to meet the people DaVinci was living with. She wanted to throw herself into as many aspects of his life as she could. He was all she had now.

DaVinci watched her searching for the two small ones. He chuckled at her words and murmured, "It's hopeless to be looking for Ty.." DaVinci knew, he'd lost the boy many times in the late fall fields. His golden coat seemed to blend in with the wilted bronze, gold, browns and yellows of the dying grasses. Skylar on the other hand shown bright against the background just as he would. She really must have found a nice place to hide to blend so well into nothing. In the back of his mind something argued that they'd probably run off and left the adults to have their own adventure where they could cause as much trouble as they wanted and get away scott free. "I'm not certain yet.. just where I belong in this family.." he said softly as he leaned his forehead against hers. He meant his own blood kin but as well in some form he meant theirs as well. How could it ever work out.. he didn't want to even try and imagine it going wrong but the fear was there.

One finger traced along the side of her face as she spoke of wanting to visit sometime. He would have loved to show her the beautiful world that his family and friends roamed in comfort and lived the lives of pampered spoiled wolves in their humanized world. He smiled down at her as he agreed, "Anything for you.." he would have agreed to whatever she pleased as he held her in his arms. He never stopped to think what his world would think of Inferni at their door.. even a single member, if he had he wouldn't have opened his arms so quickly to embrace the idea.
