The day was new, with the sun’s light only just high enough to be seen through the bare branches. The leaves were gone, only a few stragglers left upon the finger thin twigs. Cold air was sweeping in, in hard gusts that brought the unwelcome thought of winter. Her coat was thick and ready, and the scenery had already settled for a season on frozen ground and snow. Anu however was already missing fall and yearning for spring.

Four paws danced over the fallen and crisp leaves, decaying and returning to the earth from which they originated. Her light but swift step kept her blood rolling and her body warm. Maybe if she had bulk she would be able to keep herself warm, even when standing still. But until that day she would rely on her coat and pumping heart.

She was rarely alone any more, with the pups and Nani filling the space around her. It was a warm and comforting feeling, to know that she need not be alone. But the part of her, the part that called her away for her family and home was still speaking. It was pushed her to roam, to find the places she had never been and to seek the answers to her always-present questions. But, it was a quiet whisper that the simple sound of her breath could drown out.

Of course, as she wandered away from the cave she called home the small blue bird accompanied her. His fluttering and chattering filled her ears and the air around her head. He wandered where they were going, and whom they were meeting. Who was it that they looked for, and would they eat? Even though he didn’t speak, she knew that he thought such things.

She ignored him, and wandered to a place among the trees that surrounded their cave she had yet to explore. It wasn’t far till the trees opened and led her to a meadow, though not an ordinary meadow. The cold of fall and coming winter had crushed most of the grasses, leaving each strand brown with death. Among them color brighter then the newest fall leaf caught her eye, their round shape arching over the ground and calling the pair to investigate further.

The small pup gave a great yawn, jade eyes still clamped shut. He squirmed inside the warm den and rolled over onto his back, kicking out with his hind legs. There was someone else moving around and his white ear twitched, eyes still refusing to open. The boy's mind was still slowly working itself into consciousness. He had been dreaming, seemed he always dreamed when his lids shut up his vision into darkness. There were few experiences he had to draw on, so most times the sleep images didn't seem to be like anything in particular. Copper lids opened just in time to see his mom Anu exit their home and step outside. Giving a great stretch with his stubby legs, he then rolled back over onto his belly and stood up.

Sleepily and clumsily he made his way up to the fresh air. A cold gust of air rocked the pup and he whined a bit and shivered. This cold stuff was no fun. It made his ears, nose, tail, and feet numb. The cold was stupid, he decided right then and there. He searched around for his mom, catching sight of her and then trying his best to be sneaky. Oversized paws stalked after his tawny mother and her silly bird friend. Haven had no idea why it hung around all the time. He wanted to play with it, but had been warned that it was fragile and he might hurt it. He had heeded this warning and been careful not to bat at him with his paws.

Anu walked into a field, something obviously had caught her eye. Curiosity overcame his want to be stealthy. "Hey! Whas dat? Whas you see?" He scrambled after her, the dead grass crunching loudly as he went. When he reached her he walked between her legs underneath her, looking up at her head. "Whas so intrestin momma?" The thought to look in front of him and see didn't even cross his mind.

Her ear flicked backward, shooing Thunder from her head. Heeding her warning he retreated into the grasses and disappeared, he would be back he always came back. The pumpkin patch was a shameful one, late in the season most where ready to dye in the next heavy frost. Some, though, were bright as the setting sun perfect round and smelling of sweet earth. It was a serene and quite place, until she realized she wasn’t alone.

How he crept up on her she didn’t know, but still his presence was only natural in such exploratory situations. His small body snake under her, settling between her two front legs. His burnt orange color contrasted with her light fur and his voice filled her ears. Looking down she found bright green eyes of his mother looking back at her.

”Well, this is where you come from, pumpkin head.” She teased, touching his forehead with her nose. It was a comforting touch, allowing her to take in his scent and confirming that he was all right. She stepped forward, careful not to bump him, and approached the largest pumpkin that sat to their left. She examined it, enthusiastically crouching into a play stance as if asking for the fruit to play with them.

“This my boy, is a pumpkin.” Her voice was proud and her chest puffed out in a boasting manner. It was surprising that they had found such a place, its rare to find fruits and vegetables among the wilderness. Without someone to tend it, gardens usually were lost to the undergrowth.

He was somewhat surprised, yet very proud of himself, that he had managed to sneak up on momma Anu. Usually his moms knew exactly where they were and what they were doing, no matter how sneaky he and his siblings tried to be. He stared right into her blue eyes as she looked down at him, tail beginning to wag behind him. Where he came from? That was silly, he had never been here before. "Wha you talkn' bout momma? I is never been here befores. Yous bein silly!" He stated as he jumped and nipped at her nose. "An whys you always calls me pum-OH!"

Haven watched as his mother walked past him toward the big orange thing. So that's what a pumpkin was! He guessed they were kinda the same color. That's why Anu always called him pumpkin head. He giggled as he followed her over to the giant thing. He loved how playful momma Anu was. She was always the best at playing with him. Momma Nani was usually busy trying to keep Brooklyn from picking on Mati. He didn't understand why Brooklyn was always so mean to Mati, it made him kinda mad.

But his mind quickly returned to what was going on right now. He placed his front paws up on the great plant-thing. "Pumkin!" He repeated after his mom. Little black nose sniffed its surface and his small pink tongue went out to lick it. Quickly a look of disgust crossed his face. "YUCK! It no taste good!" The pup began to spit, trying to get the nasty taste out of his mouth.

The sight of Haven approaching the pumpkin made her smile. His keen curiosity reminded Anu of her own. There were always questions, and always unknown things that needed to be know. The world was filled with mysteries that would only be relieved when one goes to find it. The green-eyed boy had the same heart that would seek to silence the voice of curiosity.

His disgusted voice rang in her ears, and her laughed at his unhappy face. Why he thought that it was something he should eat, she didn’t know. But then again, how was he to know if he didn’t try? She pretended to follow his lead, nosing the pumpkin and even brought her tongue out to lick it herself. Stopping before the kiss she spoke,"No, its not something we eat.”

She padded around the large pumpkin, eyes ever watching him. Mothers knew better then to let a small pup wander on their own. She was lucky that he had followed her and not some other imaginary trail. "See Haven, you and the pumpkin are the same color.” Anu took a moment to think, then found a new game for the both of them. "Let see if we can find the biggest in the patch.”

Even with her diligence she turned her back and wandered through the patch, eyes on real pumpkins and not her pumpkin head.

And finally I get to make an allusion to The Nightmare Before Christmas in a thread! XD

His nose was still wrinkled up as his mother pretended to lick the thing as well, telling him that it wasn't something that they ate. "No wonders! Evens if we dids, I wouldn'! Is gross!" If Haven had been a human child, he definitely would have been the type to hate vegetables. As she stated that he was the same color as the pumpkin, he looked at his paw that was resting up against its side. He had already noticed it, but now the he was right next to one, their shades were almost identical. A strange thought popped into his head and he tilted his head. "I wonders if I tastes as yucky as a pumpkin." He wondered aloud.

Puppy thoughts were soon diverted to focus on the game Anu had put forth. All four feet touched the ground again as he followed his mother through the pumpkin patch, looking for the largest of them. Then something caught his eye off to their left. A big grin spread across his face and he bounded over towards a giant pumpkin with a few smaller ones lined up against it. He jumped up onto one of the smaller ones, his back paws scrambling to stand on top of it. Once that had been achieved, he went onto the next and the next, until he made his way up to stand on top of the largest one.

Puffing out his chest, he turned to look at his mother, her back was currently turned to him. "Momma look! I is the pumkin king!" Haven called out, jade eyes sparkling with his cleverness. His tiny tail waved like a banner behind him.

Of course she was looking for the largest pumpkin in the patch, but she was also falling back into her old ways of the green-toed wolf. She noted the length of the green vines that fed the round bulbs. The muddles planting was disorganized and left some plants to flourish and others to be shaded and starved of the sun’s light. In the next season she would pull the remnants and plant strait and even rows. They would be able to harvest the pumpkins for the pups first birthday, and even decorate the mansion.

Her reply to his thought was simple, “Of course you taste delicious.” all the while, eyes wandering along the trees that lined the sides of the patch. They didn’t hide the sun as much as she first thought, making the area a better garden then she had once imagined it. His next words brought Anu back into focus. She turned to see him atop a large pumpkin, and his stance in proclamation made her grin. Yes, of course he was the king of the pumpkins, being a true pumpkin head and all. She approached his throne, and gave a large play bow, her chin touching the ground in mock honor.

“Your highness.” Her tail wagged, as she stood strait and backed up a few steps and took in the sight of him. “Do you know any games fit for a king?”

Don't ask me how he knows about dragons... >.>

He grinned as his mother turned and walked over to him. Giggling as she bowed before him. He loved playing with momma Anu. He loved his momma Nani just as much, but most times she was busy keeping Brooklyn out of trouble. It seemed Anu always had time to play with him. Orange tail wagged faster as she mentioned a game, his whole body practically vibrating with excitement. Games were his absolute favorite. "Ummmm..." Haven wracked his brain, trying to come up with a game fit for royalty.

Then something popped into his head. It wasn't anything they had played before, but he thought it the best game for the occasion. "I knows! Momma! You'll bes a big, scary dwagon! An' I'll bes the bwave knight! You goes hide n' I'll come finds you and slays you!" What a great idea! It would be like hide and seek, but even more exciting! She had told them all a story like this. In the story there was a damsel in distress, but oh well! They didn't need one of those.

The best thing about the pups was the laughter that they brought her. Anu had never laughed so much in her entire life before the four entered her life. Haven could always make her smile, with out trying and just by being himself. It surprised her at first, when he thought of the nighttime story she had told him, but then it only seemed natural for the pup to remember the tale.

An armored knight welding a polished and glimmering sword atop a steed larger then the tallest stag, wild and fierce. Anu had pictured the story, each piece when she had been as young as Haven. The dragon had frightened her, but he was brave and held the vision of the prehistoric beast with no fear. There would be a day when he would need to be brave, and face his own challenges, and he might just become the knight in her story.

Her eyes lit up at the thought of playing the evil dragon. She gave him a wink, before slinking off to find a hiding place. Into the patch she trotted, eyes working to find a place where she could hide. It was easy to imagine herself as a dragon, larger then any other beast, scaled and a bright fire red. She lay behind a gathering of pumpkins, her long spiked tail curled around clawed fingers. Smoke floated from her nostrils, waiting ever so patiently.

As his mother winked at him, he lowered himself to lay on his pumpkin throne, closing his jade eyes. His bi-colored ears twitched as he heard her paws moving throughout the pasture, looking for a place to hide. With his eyes closed images began to swirl in his mind. He began to picture himself as a brave knight, a slayer of evil dragons. Then suddenly the field was quiet. Not even the sound of a mouse could be heard to the young pup. Burnt orange lids opened, revealing rocks instead of pumpkins. He stood up, mounted on his great black steed, clad in golden armor.

Gracefully (in his mind at least), he jumped from his mount. At his side on the ground was a great sword. In all reality it was a stick, but this was no game for cumbersome things such as reality. He hefted the weapon into his mouth and began to stalk through the rocks, searching for the dragon's lair. Haven the Knight moved cautiously, careful as to not alert the beast to his presence.

His footsteps stopped as he saw the back of the great monster inside it's cave. He steeled himself, preparing for the first strike. Then with a surge of energy he charged forward, smacking the dragon's behind with his sword. Then he jumped back, waiting for the beast to emerge and face him.

A sleeping dragon was not something to be messed with. Red-scaled body heaved up and down with each breath. A flick of the tail revealed a dreaming mind, images of burning villages and eating herd of livestock in seconds. It was wrong to disturb the slumbering beast, but there might just be one beast brave enough to do so, or was it more foolish? A swift whack on the butt woke the slumbering beast, amber eyes blazed as her long neck curved to see who disturbed her.

Of course in reality she was a mere shewolf curled behind a pumpkin with her tail covering her nose, but to the pair she looked far different.

A roar was emitted from her mouth, the sound of a fussy baby awoken from its afternoon nap. Without waiting for an answer she stood to face her advisory, and found it to be the golden knight of her nightmares. The gleaming sword made her temble, but to survive she would fight to her death. His small size increased her confidence and drawing her to the mouth of her dwelling.

A flick of the tail would take care of him, she was sure of it, sword or not. She brushed her tail against his legs in hope of taking them from under him. It would be a battle to the death, good versus evil.

The knight stood there bravely as the dragon awoke and looked at him. A ferocious roar came from the creature of nightmares, but he stood his ground. Brilliant jade orbs narrowed as the red beast approached. For a moment he thought he saw the shine of fear in her eyes, but it was quickly extinguished. This would be a fearsome battle. He knew that only one of them would come out of it alive.

The giant crimson tail came crashing toward him. The attack was unavoidable, so he braced himself, hoping his armor would do its job of protecting him. His legs were taken out from under him, but he rolled to the side. Regaining his footing he shot towards the dragon, sword pointed at its side. The sharp end of his weapon made contact with its scaled side. He jumped back once again, waiting for the next round of attacks.

.. if he kills her, thats ok!

How did her attack barely phase him? Her blood boiled and eyes turned blood thirsty in her rage. He rolled after her initial attack, making her think that he was truly done for. But as quickly as he fell, he rose again and sprung into action. Weapon raised he sliced into her scaled skin, leaving her side burning in pain. Her mind became wild with rage, sounding her despair.

Bright claws shown in the sun’s light before they crashed down toward the knight before her. She would need to use all her own weapons if she was to defeat the sword-welding knight. She felt the fire building in her throat; the smoke billowed out of her nostrils. She extended her neck toward him, the fire tumbling into her mouth and ready to explode past her lips.

He should kill her and then Anu should act like she is dead until he gets all worried and then jump up and scare him XD Little bit of PP, just lemme know if you want changed!

The dragon smashed her claws down towards him, but he jumped out of the way. His eyes caught sight of the increased smoke coming from the beast's nostrils and knew that he needed to make a drastic move or he would be burned alive. The fire was the most dangerous weapon a dragon possessed, and there was no way he could avoid or defend against such elemental power.

Thinking quickly, the knight ran to the back of his adversary. He scrambled up onto her back, using her tail as a sort of ladder. Wildly the monster began to thrash around, doing everything she could to knock him from her back. If he fell he knew it was all over for him, so he had to strike hard and true. He lifted his sword into the air and brought it down right between the dragon's shoulders. If this attack didn't work, he might be doomed.

<3 it!

From belly to lips the fire bubbled, boiled and burned. It fought her teeth for release, and she was all to happy to see it escape. A large blaze propelled itself from her mouth, incinerating everything in its path. Eyes opened to see that the only charred creatures were blades of grass and the stay pumpkin. The golden knight did not lay before the brilliant dragon, but instead she held the cold armor and the knights weight on her back.

It happened all to quickly, the death of a mythical creature was swift and as magnificent as the beast of legends had been. Her long neck could no longer hold her horned head, and as the rest of her body wavered it fell in a loud thud. Dust rose from beneath the dead being, and as it settled something started to happen.

As the dirt fell, there was no red that could be seen through the air’s film. Once it settled, the only breathless beast that lay across the ground was a furred wolfess.

The knight could feel the dragon losing its grip on life, and quickly jumped from her back, lest he be crushed as she fell. The crashing of the mystical creature's body was thunderous, no doubt it could be heard from miles and miles away. The dust that flew up was like a hurricane. The knight covered his head, waiting until everything had settled. Dust and wind whipped around him for what seemed like an eternity. Then finally all was still and silent.

As the knight rose up he was no longer a knight. Just a small pumpkin puppy with a stick in his mouth. Haven dropped the stick and rushed over to the fallen form of his mother. "I won, I won! I beats you momma!" He exclaimed triumphantly. His little mouth tugged on her ear playfully, but she didn't get up. What was she doing? The game was over now. The boy walked around and shoved at her shoulder with his paws, but still she didn't stir. He stood there frozen, fear seeping into his mind. It had been a game, they were just playing, right? His bi-colored ears folded back and his tail tucked against his belly. He slunk up to his mother's head and licked at her muzzle. A sad whine came from his throat.

she dead long enough..?

It seemed like all the energy that she possessed was filtering from her body. Their games had tired her out, but it seemed like Haven still had plenty of fuel to burn. Closed eyes picture him jumping and cheering, in the belief that he had destroyed the evil dragon. Maybe if she stayed still for just a moment he would run away and she could jump up in revenge.

But, the silence wasn’t the kind of his absence but more of a watchful presence. His touch against her snout was a soft one, but it was the sorrowful cry that came from mouth that made her open her eyes. Blue orbs saw his scared posture and sad eyes. She kissed him back, hoping to coax him out of his fear.

Yah! Das is gut!

For a little bit, he was really, really scared that he had hurt his momma. Nothing ever scared him, but this did. He loved his momma! He didn't know what he would do if he lost her. Thankfully, soon the boy's fears were erased as her bright blue eyes opened and she licked his head. Haven's little tail began to wag wildly, though it was still somewhat tucked.

Without a thought, the pup snuggled up against his mother's head. "Mommas yous ok? I sorries, I didn' means to hurts yous." He continued to lick at her face. The Aatte boy didn't know he could feel this bad after a simple game. He would never do anything on purpose to hurt anyone, especially his mother.

end soon?

Anu leaned up onto her stomach and nudged the boy as he rubbed against her head. She knew he was sincere, but was happy that he wasn’t scared ay more. Feeling somewhat bad that she had played a little game on him her voice was soft and soothing.

Oh I know Haven, see I’m fine. She stood to show that she was more then fine. Her tail wagged to calm him and she trotted backward and forward to show he had full use of every part.

She walked toward him and placed her nose on his forehead, hoping to calm him. Just her way of saying they were both ok.

Si! End after your next post?

Soon all his fears were dismissed as his mother got to her feet and walked around to show that she was fine. The pup heaved a sigh. That was no fun, he never wanted to ever see his momma hurt. As she pressed her nose against his head his tail thudded against the ground. Haven liked it when she did that. It made him feel safe and secure.

"Mommas? Wanna go hunts somefink? Maybes you can show me hows to tracks again." The boy desperately wanted to get better at hunting and tracking. He had done fairly well in their family lesson, but he knew it would be even better when it was just the two of them.
