OoC: Por Salem

IC:
’Cold beyond frozen things…’
Garnet padded along in the twilight, snow falling softly onto her back. She hadn’t remembered winter; she had only been a few months old the last time it had been around. The coyote left deep impressions in the snow behind her because she was in her Secui form, the thick mane fell around her neck and shoulders, helping to keep her warm. She couldn’t image that anyone else would be out in this weather, alone. Garnet herself was heading back to the mansion and hopefully to Jazper’s warm embrace. The she-yote sighed happily and would have given a little twirl if she had two feet. It was funny to remember how apprehensive she had been to gain her Optime form when she had been younger, it all seemed silly now.

Garnet paused for a second to look at the falling snow around her and sat down near some trees. At least there she had some protection from the cold breeze that was attacking her. The canine settled down and curled up a bit, putting her tail over her back feet and resting on her side. A curious thought went through her head as she wondered whether it was better to lie on the snow, thus being protected from the wind, or avoid it. Which was colder? Another gust made the coyote shiver and puff up and she decided that the former was the correct action to take. Maybe she would ask Jaz about it when she got back, he always seemed to know so much more than she…

knowledge locked in a tower — barons will hold the key

It had started out as the group of litter mates making a mess and playing in the snow and had evolved into something more. An adventure, a game of hide and seek; whatever they had been playing was long lost on him. Which exactly described Salem's thoughts as he ventured deeper into the small copse of trees. He was lost. At first a sense of dreadful panic had seeped into him, but he had tried hard to will it away. He tried to be like the little boy who never aged, that Peter Pan fellow that Geneva had read aloud about. Peter Pan would have never been scared of some skeleton-fingered forest where the snow clung tightly to the trees. Peter Pan would have never been afraid of the long shadows and the frozen brambles.

So those kind of thoughts kept his demeanour calm, but unfortunately did not bestow upon him the intelligence to figure out from whence he came. For the longest time, Salem worked through the snow and found that the drifts were not nearly as deep as they were out across the roving plains and hills near the lake, but he also went in circles. Before too long, having a good nose or eyes to follow his own footprints wouldn't have mattered because he had gone in every direction at least thrice. And then it had started to get dark out and as the mid-afternoon twilight descended upon the pack territory, he fully expected Naniko to be along to collect him soon.

She'd scold him for getting carried away and wandering, he'd cry about being lost, and soon he'd be nestled against her and his other mother and his siblings back in their den before no time. Dinner would be at hand and like all good babies eventually do, he would fall into a fitful sleep. Salem's life was a routine. An uncoordinated one, but a routine nonetheless. However, what that itinerary did not have listed for him today was to meet someone new. The inky darkness of a figure sitting tall against the inset of the new found copse edge intrigued him. The fact that this skinny, gangly, big ear wolf (he was unfamiliar with coyotes) was as dark as he drew him in like a moth to a flame.

So he walked right up and sat beside her.

but if knowledge is power — know this is tyranny

Garnet yawned, thinking pleasant thoughts of Jazper and his warm mansion. Maybe he would even have food there, she had sampled a bit of cooked food before, and while the taste was interesting the warmth was what she really craved right now. It wasn’t like she wasn’t also hungry, the coyote hadn’t eaten in two days, but that was no big deal to her. Maybe it was just the coyote blood in her that made her seem less hungry, or maybe it was just the period when she was younger of being by herself, fending for herself, eating little and giving thanks when she found something she could eat.

At that moment, almost like a ghost out of her memory, a tiny dark smudge appeared from the trees. She first dismissed it as her brain imagining things, but she could not ignore the dark pup when he walked up and sat next to her. Garnet was shocked to see the small creature out and wandering about in this frightful weather; such a small pup should be at home with his parents. The coyote moved towards the pup and gave him an exploratory sniff. Dark red eyes grew wide as she recognized the scent of Naniko and realized who this must be. She had a flashback of a tiny black pup when she had gone finishing.

”You’re Naniko’s pup, aren’t you? What are you doing out in this cold?” The coyote had just about no experience with pups, but, maybe being female she instinctively moved closer to the small bundle to block the wind and give him a bit of her warmth.
