Three: The minuscule figure of a wolf pup paddled atop the surface of the icy snow. The small body paddled slowly through the snow that danced in the sky, walking slowly with the strong winds. Vanilla hued fur tangled as the air brushed against the wolf’s small body. Navy blue eyes where narrowed as the small pup tried to increase his ability to see through the wall of white that was set ahead of him. Breaths where turned to weak gasps for air, and frantically the wolf pup tried to inhale a breath. The wind changed direction once again, this time pushing against his right side. Nearly loosing his balance, the young he-wolf steadied his stance, not wanting to fall over and be buried by the snow.
Gathering the strength to raise his head to the wind, the vividly coloured pup searched the lands. He saw nothing but distorted images of trees and of the mountain peeks that towered above the earth. He had followed the scent markings that lead into the foothills of the mountains, and suddenly he was engulfed by a blizzard. “M-momma!” He yelled, his voice echoing in the winds, only to fade away. Inhaling another short, raspy breath, the pup turned his head away from the wind. A shiver rang down his tiny spine, and for once in the entire winter, he felt as if he would turn into an ice cube. His coat had protected him before, but the tiny pup had never laid eyes upon so much snow falling from the sky all at once.
“Mommy!” The voice cried again, hoping that his mother, where ever she was, would come and protect him. She had left him in the middle of a game of hide-and-go-seek, and she had not returned. After searching for the remainder of the day, he had caught a faint smell of another wolf. He did not wish to travel to the wolves, but there was a chance that they could help him search for his mother. His brother had gone missing as well, and the small wolf wanted desperately to find them. The pup’s father had died a week or so ago, and he had not learned of his death. His mother had thought that such innocent little things should not know of the Reaper, and she did not have the heart to tell her children what had happened. Her mate had died of malnutrition while he tired so desperately to raise his pups, and his mother whom had gone missing had killed herself. Somewhere within the gates of heaven, the couple where being reunited.
But the pup, poor little Kedinn, knew nothing of their death. He was alone and afraid, and he could not understand why he was abandoned by the only wolves he knew and loved. A soft whine came from the male as he walked blindly through the blizzard. His eyes focused momentarily upon a shadow that stood in the distance, and immediately his hopes raised. A smile curled his lips and he bounced toward the dark figure, his beautiful blue eyes full of happiness. Upon coming closer to this shadow, it revealed itself to be nothing more than a tree. The pup’s hopes shattered inside of him, and his pace slowed as he came to the thin trunk of the tree. Tears built within his optics as he looked up at the tree, deeply disappointed as he came to sit beside it. Laying himself against the rough bark of the tree, the pup curled himself together.
“Mommy, why d-didya haf to go an’ weave me?” He whispered softly to himself, whimpered as he closed his eyes. He felt the cold bark scratch uncomfortably at his back, and again the pup whined in distress. Again he shivered, and he tried desperately to conserve the little warmth he had.
