Lullaby

I wish I had a lullaby.

The forest was quiet here, still full of childlike wonder in it's early youth. For the woods, it hadn't been so long since the humans were wiped out, the bandages they were weaving were being woven slowly, so slowly. Patches of tiny treelings stood defiantly on patches of grass, between buildings, peeking through flagstones and bricks on the streets and walks.

As Agani passed them, he wanted nothing more than to sleep. His nameless friend was sulky and sullen now, unable to comprehend Agani's tired out thoughts. He was growing too slow for her, but she couldn't understand. Even he didn't. Ember was Ember, Ember was there, and she was not. He wanted so dearly to believe she was his Ember, the daughter of his favourite ghost, but it grew harder and harder. 'Round corners, between trees, everytime he looked away too fast, she was there.

He wanted his dreams to go away. The ones where he found her and it was all right. Because it wouldn't be. Because he couldn't accept it. Because he had won the battle in leaving, and ultimately lost the war.

Life isn't a fight.

It always is.

Tired hazel eyes lifted, catching the setting sun off the docks, reflecting silvery steel off the water. It was beautiful. The land might be called Overgrowth Sunrise, but it was the sunset Agani wanted to see. The westward sun, shining lively, dancing across quiet waves. Sunsets were better than sunrises. Perhaps the sun would not rise again tomorrow, and he could lie down peacefully and drift away.

He could stop believing in his forevers and his fairytales and his happily-ever-after and face the reality of death.
