a failed attempt to capsulize a feeling.

It'd been a while since he had seen her, but it wasn't for lack of trying. There were only so many ways you could stand in your tree house and craned your neck to see through the branches at your target without looking like a maniac. But that's just what he was. A maniac whose heart had been stolen by someone no more than a stranger. He'd only seen her a few times, for Christ's sake! But those few times spent with her lived on within him for hours, he mentally stretched the period of time in a way that made it seem endless. And even when he ran out of real material to think of, he made up new scenarios, and all of them ended up with the two of them tangled and entwined on his tree house floor. He was fairly level headed, especially when it came to the opposite sex – being a clumsy, helpless oaf did that to a lot of people. He usually never stuck around long enough to develop feelings for a stranger. But this had taken no time at all, just a mere glance with that gorgeous smirk she often wore.

And tonight, he was putting his plan in motion. The tree house was finally completed, the sanding and finishing completed days before. They had been blessed with a couple of days marred only by a few clouds but other than that, Eli's tree house was sanded, painted and properly finished, sitting up in its perch for the long run. He enjoyed creating structures from wood and placing them in almost familiar situations. Those branches used for support beams and the blanks for the fort's solid floor had come from a tree just like this. Now they were reunited and the two mediums blended wonderfully.

It was the evening, the sun was just settling down behind the horizon, blessing some area of land with its watery light. For now he had a plan to set in motion. He'd already taken a bath over in his favourite river and the evening's chill was actually helping with his anxiety.
He paced around his tree making last moment adjustments. A candle here and there, a good-looking display of foliage running down the ladder into the tree house which was complete with a safe fire-grill, one he'd scavenged from one of the human areas. He had a few hares cooking up now, but there were raw rodents off to the side in case Kol preferred a more traditional meal. So. Everything was taken care of, right down to the bouquet of fresh spring flowers he clasped carefully in his paw.

Eli ran his hand through the spikey, still slightly wet fur that stuck up in different directions between his ears. A deep breath was all he took to settle himself and he headed off to Kol's place of residence, an offer for dinner and stargazing on his lips.

She wasn't exactly in the greatest of moods. The evening found the Stormbringer brooding as she bathed in one of the river's tributaries a little ways away from her home. She'd spent most of the past three days in the neutral lands between Dahlia and Inferni, alert for any small sign of the pack's missing pups. Haku seemed suspicious that their mother had actually played a part in their disappearance, and truth be told Kol wasn't entirely sure he was wrong. It just seemed so strange, the way that it had happened. Dahlia's security was intensely tight, the pack still on edge from the recent conflict with the coyote clan. They had a few unwanteds sneak into the lands every now and then, but how in the hell could someone manage to then sneak into the Lilium's house and snatch his children, then miraculously vanish from Dahlia without leaving even a trace of trespassing scent?

The Optime's jaw clenched as she mulled over the possibilities in her mind. It was highly unlikely the kidnapping was pulled off without and insider, and Haku wasn't the only one living in his home. While she had serious doubts that a mother could willingly put her children in harm's way, it was possible one could stage a kidnapping and leave the boys with a relative. In fact, that's probably something Kol would do if she were ever pushed the way Haku had pushed Firefly. Kol had a soft spot for the psychopathic Lilium, but she also knew just how many wrongs he'd committed and just how much he'd hurt his mate. It was definitely possible that she could have taken the boys herself to hurt Haku. It was worth pondering, and perhaps focusing her scouting forays on packs and areas where Firefly's family members resided. The charcoal girl held Firefly in high respect as well, which sealed her decision to keep her theory from Haku until she found any evidence, and confronted Firefly herself. There were two sides to every story.

The raven-kissed female sighed softly as she ran her fingers through the knots in her silky mane. The werewolf's fur was absent of its usual adornments, the silver trinkets and beaded feathers lying in a neat pile on a rock on the riverbank. They were close enough to keep an eye on, but it was impossibly to comb her mane free with the jewelry still fastened. The only piece of silver that glittered in the moonlight was her odd earring, that particular trinket never being removed unless absolutely necessary. The muscles of the woman's body held no hint of the tempest in her thoughts, the brisk waters of the creek soothing her aches and releasing the tension and strain from the past few days.

Theories centering around the location of Conor and Emwe swirled in the Circee's head, her violet eyes staring blankly into the night-kissed woods. Slowly, ever so slowly, those thoughts began to morph into something far different, musings of the dreamy girl still buried beneath the weight of war and responsibility. She was old enough now to wonder about her own future, namely the romantic kind. Thinking of the boys had her thinking of what her own pups would be like, if she ever found a man to have them with. Kol wanted children of her own someday, but not nearly enough to go find a sperm-donor for a one-night stand and raise the pups entirely on her own. She wanted stability, she wanted a family, and a mate she could depend on. She wanted someone she could share the deepest parts of her soul with, someone who made her feel like her life was complete. Kol wanted the kind of love her grandaunt and granduncle had, even though she knew something like that was probably the rarist form of companionship in the world. No one was ever really lucky enough to get something like that...especially not someone like her...

And yet no matter how much she convinced herself of that fact, she still wanted what she knew she could probably never have. Life wasn't a fairytale, and the only person you could really depend on was yourself. Sure she had Lexey, the entire Stormbringer bloodline, and considered her packmates her family, but she doubted she'd ever find that one person to sweep her off her feet and complete her existence. She could never understand the flippant tendencies of other females to go from one mate to another and "date around" as they called it either. If it wasn't something serious, why the hell bother? What was the point of it all? Kol wasn't willing to settle for the superficial forms of mateship those lesser opportunities brought with them, and so she'd resigned herself already to probably spending her life alone.

Of course that never stopped the unbidden thoughts of a certain male who'd shown up not long ago. Kol had no idea why this particular blockhead of a wolf kept popping up in her mind on strange occasions. They were usually extremely bad times too. The girl's composure was seldom jeopardized, but whenever that male's image would catch her off-guard, it was difficult to repress it. At least when she was alone, she was free to think of whatever she wanted, not worrying how her reactions to her thoughts would be read by someone else. Sighing deeply, Kol tried to clear her mind of everything, dipping her head beneath the gentle current for a moment before coming up for air and sweeping her mane out of her scarred face. That was when she saw him. For a moment, she thought it was just another unbidden flash of her imagination, but as she blinked the water from her violet eyes, the image remained. He was definitely solid, walking nonchalantly through the woods as she stared at him. He had a joyful air about him, and her heart sank as she saw the flowers in his large hand. Elliott was obviously on his way for a romantic interlude with someone...and it disappointed her more than she'd expected it to. Of course he had a female interest, why wouldn't he? He was probably the best all-around male the girl had ever met, and it was always said that the best ones were already taken. Kol had been silly to entertain any dreamy thoughts of the male in the first place. The sight of him was far stronger than her thoughts could ever be, and her heart raced as all she could do was watch him, hoping he hadn't caught sight of her and would just keep walking.

Sorry for the WAIT.

He had concentrated so hard on appearing to look cool, calm and collected that it was almost impossible to tell that the massive male had paced back and forth in front of his home for at least half an hour. During that time he'd had to talk himself into following through with his plan. Elliot had given up several times, ready to forfeit his carefully selected flowers to the bushes around his tree. But each time he readied himself to toss the pretty things away, he had been able to gather enough resolve to continue on. And so now he was on his way, after relighting the many candles that had blown out during his time of uncertainty. More would most likely be out by the time he returned – either alone or with the object of his affection, so he could only hope for Kol's acceptance to be delivered quickly. Because of course she'd accept, right? No one could turn down a free meal...even though she was perfectly capable of catching her own meal. He could dream though, couldn't he?

Kol's wish to pass by without being noticed was hopeless from the get go. Since he first laid eyes on her, it seemed as if Eli's entire existence revolved around the raven-kissed female. He was completely attuned with her every movement, he'd never been so aware of another's presence like he was now. So the moment she came within feet of him, he was instantly aware, turning swiftly to greet his beloved with a smile. He'd never been so nervous in his life before, but still the male pushed on, an awkward grin plastered across his face, flowers thrust forward in a hopeful manner. These are for you. I picked only the prettiest. He would have continued on, stating that he had only picked the prettiest because she deserved nothing less, but the male quickly became tongue-tied, incapable of doling out anymore compliments, just a breathless greeting. Er, hi Kol. It's nice to see you again. He continued to show her his most eager smile, ears shot forward with enthusiasm, waiting desperately for some kind of reply. If she took the flowers then he'd ask her to dinner. If she refused them, he'd wait for the earliest exit opportunity and bow out as gracefully as he could. He could only pray that that wouldn't happen.

Kol couldn't help but blink in amazement as Elliott strode toward her. Part of her grumbled in dissatisfaction at the fact that her wish had gone unheeded, but that part was quickly overshadowed by a hot blush beneath her fur as the male approached. Her violet eyes hid no hint of her surprise as the handsome wolf thrust his bouquet in her direction, and she tentatively reached out a hand to clasp her fingers around the stems. Her amethyst gaze flicked back and forth from the beautiful blossoms to the eyes of the offering male a few times before she was able to speak. "For me? But...why? Elliott, these are beautiful!" It wasn't an exaggeration either, and Kol couldn't wait to get the blooms home and sitting in the formerly empty vase on the windowseat of her little bedroom.

The Stormbringer smiled genuinely at the male as he spoke again, her heart doing little backflips as his orange gaze held her own. Remembering she was still knee-deep in the water and soaked to the bone, Kol slipped out of the stream and set the flowers ever so gently beside her various beads and hair ornaments. She let most of her body begin to drip dry, but her thick mane would take hours to do the same, considering its heft and texture. With Elliott standing close by, the Dahlian girl ran her fingers through the redblack hair, wringing out as much water as she possibly could. "It's really nice to see you too, Elliott. You know, you don't have to be a stranger. We're practically neighbors, and neither Alexey nor I would mind a visit from you every now and again..."

Beneath the veil of her dangling hair, Kol was glad that Elliott couldn't see the look in her eye as she finished her offer. What the hell had made her say that?? Her heart and tongue were moving far too fast for her mind to filter, and she mentally punched herself for stumbling so easily at a handsome face and a sweet gesture. She knew better, and yet despite that she was still being utterly stupid. Holding back the growl she wanted to direct at herself, Kol took a seat on the flat rock where her possessions lay, flipped her mane back into place and began braiding some of her jewelry back into it. Not wanting to seem rude nor desiring to end their encounter as of yet, she fumbled for something to say. "So uh...what brings you out here anyway?"

Bwahahaha! This feels good!

Her smiles inspired him. They made him feel invincible. He was capable of turning up those soft lips, lighting her eyes up with a quiet delight. He lived for that smile and it swept him into a gentlemanly role, eyes on her always, soft with his feelings. When she tentatively accepted the flowers, his heart danced with joy, hand tingling as her delicate fingers brushed his own, ever so slightly. She was soft, unbelievably so, and he was embarrassed by how his own fingers would feel to her. They were large and calloused, typical working hands whose upkeep fell behind the numerous projects that kept him busy. He pulled his had back swiftly, almost ashamed. But that smile – it could cure anything. So could her voice. His ears swiveled to catch her gentle words, quivering slightly as her voice caressed them. He was unimpressed by her declaration of the flowers' beauty. There are prettier things. He smiled shyly and his gaze swept over her form, pausing at her stomach, tracking the water that dripped from her fur. It was a subtle look, gentle and shy as his manners were. He hoped she didn't notice.

At the prospect of visiting her more often, spending time with her – well it set his heart off again, and he was afraid he'd never get it back. He smiled, abashed and incapable of proper speech. He managed a soft “okay, sure”, the most romantic lines in his repertoire. But it was at her last words that he managed to succeed. Feeling as if he was almost out of his body, he dipped his head and his hand trailed up to his head, tipping an imaginary hat. His eyes held hers and his small smile tugged at his lips. His eyes were alive. Why you did, miss.

If Kol thought her skin couldn't blush any hotter beneath her charcoal fur, she was wrong. Her hands stopped mid-braid as Elliott made a gentlemanly gesture to go with his chivalrous phrase. His dancing ember eyes caught her own of violet and for a moment, the world just stopped. Those eyes were like none she'd ever seen before, so open and honest, filled with warmth and promises Kol was secretly terrified of. Her heart fell into those twin pools of warm fire easily, though her mind was trying desperatly to pull it back out. Her feelings warred between those two influences, and for the moment she was stuck in some sort of confused limbo. Ignoring both for the moment, Kol decided to simply be herself and see where that would lead. She would not, however, allow herself to get lost completely, and she'd simply anticipate a harsh ending, no matter how sweet the moments leading to it would be. It would hurt less that way.

"Oh is that so? And why would that be, oh charming prince?" She smiled mischievously as she quipped back at him, the light in her dancing eyes mirroring Elliott's own. "Flattery will get you everywhere." Chuckling quietly, she offered the male a wink to accompany her playful statement.
