chasing the shadows of a promise

schwarzFor a pup who had yet to experience summer, being born at the tail end of winter, it was hot. It seemed like the temperature kept rising and there was no longer the storms that broke the week once or twice with cooling rain. Unbeknown to the pup, it was only going to get warmer -- much warmer. Once summer rolled around he and his siblings would probably spend most of their time playing by the harbor in the rolling tides of the sea. For now Roulette made good use of the heavily wooded area in the southeastern part of the pack land, seeking refuge under the shade the trees offered.

schwarzTrotting along the path, pink tongue lolling out in a light pant, Roulette traveled away from all the territory he had explored. He was running out of new places to see! He was still careful to mind the marks left by his elders and not travel outside the lands owned by Dahlia de Mai… at least for now. Who knew what he would do for entertainment once he had nothing new to see. The mystery beyond the borders his guardians had forbidden him to cross would surely tease his curiosity to the point of breaking at some time. For now he was content enough with Mai’s land.

schwarzThe woods were a new adventure in themselves. Dark and cool even when the sun shone bright and hot in the sky. Stopping for a moment, he heard the rustling of a small animal running through the underbrush. Ears perking, he looked around for the sound. A squirrel chattered angrily at him from a tree near by, obviously discontent at the small wolf wandering so close to its home. Grinning, Roulette rushed to the base of the tree and barked at it, body stretching up, paws on the tree truck as he unknowingly tormented the poor creature by trying to play.

schwarzThe boy stayed like that for several minutes, barking, tail wagging, before he came to realize the squirrel wasn’t coming down. Growing bored, he sat, frowning. Was Avarice really the only one who wanted to play with him? It was probably his fault. He didn’t make an effort to speak to anyone who wouldn’t talk to him in German and he was even starting to resent those who tried to get him to speak the funny language of this area. They wanted so bad for him to speak like them but they wouldn’t take the time to learn his language. That hardly seemed fair.

schwarzRoulette’s attention was suddenly grabbed by something sparkling a short distance away. Leaving his brooding with the frustrated squirrel, the pup hurried over to it. The sun peaked through the trees on a necklace, shining as the light bounced off of its plastic purple beads. Avarice would love it! Scooping up the necklace in his jaws, the pup started to dash back towards the church they called home –- for the time being at least. …but which way was home?

Bark bark bark. That was all that the damned puppies of Dahlia de Mai did. Her resentment of them was twofold; she disliked that which was small and outside of her control, and she hated the constant reminder of her own failings as a mother. Tokyo was supposed to be perfect. The blood was on her figurative hands, though, for three young lives. And then the two that she had tried to raise had left.. abandoned her. So her dislike for the dumb little things was pretty firmly cemented. Even if she didn't like them, though, she wasn't allowed to be as cruel as she wanted - even if she got away with stealing that rabbit from Palindrome, it was a sort of close call and a similar situation might not end up as much in her favor.

Well, she could still tell the damned thing to be quiet, at least when he was this close to Tokyo's den. When she approached, she decided it was one she hadn't seen before. Honestly, how many were there! She couldn't understand how there could be so many puppies at once. Surely once one female made the mistake of sex and realized what occurred from it, she'd warn the others of her pack... Tokyo herself had absolutely no interest in the act of procreation, and she shuddered to think of her own experiences in the act.

Before she reached him, though, she spotted something purple glinting in the green and brown brush. Her necklace! Well, the puppy rose ever so slightly in her estimation, if only through coincidence. It had been his annoying barking that had caused her to walk in this direction. Any pending forgiveness was extinguished as the puppy took her necklace in his mouth. If she had felt the pressure of restraint from the social construct of the pack before, it had all disappeared. This puppy had infringed upon her rights. That was her necklace, from her father! "Excuse me! Drop that necklace right now."
