the castle

___ La Chateau. It was a grand name for the beach home, but had Apollo known the meaning, would have easily agreed. This place was practically a castle. It was comprised of three stories. The bottom floor had a large open sitting room with a wall made entirely of windows, looking out over the shore that was just a couple dozen yards away. Behind this room was a long corridor, housing two bedrooms, a laundry room, and a bathroom. But that was just the beginning.

___If you climbed the stairs to the second floor, there was another sitting room with a wall of windows. This, too, looked out over the picturesque water. And separated by a small step in the floor, was a large kitchen and dining room, and a small front porch (as La Chateau was situated on an embankment). There was a master bedroom here with its own bathroom that supported a rather large tub, big enough for any Luperci to lounge comfortably. And lastly, there was a huge attic room above, with a small sitting area arranged by the windows, and a number of forgotten beds. It was miraculous. And Apollo, dumbfounded as he was, had it all to himself.

___ The young Haddix made his way down the stairs from the attic, gripping the wooden hand rail as he went. He was sure that if he didn’t support himself, he was going to fall over. This place was nothing like the buildings in Halifax. This place was gorgeous. It didn’t take him long to make his way out of the home and down to the shore. There was an old dock that went out a couple of meters, but Apollo didn’t trust it. After all these years, he wasn’t sure it would hold up much longer. He dropped himself down onto the pebbly shore, resting his forearms on his knees. This would be a nice place to live, he decided. Though it was kind of far from Crimson Dreams, it offered plenty of privacy.

Hybrid had been watching him. The boy had entered the house, spent some time dallying about -- most likely thinking flowery thoughts about how pretty and nice it was -- before he exited and sat down on the beach. Hybrid eyed the wolf with disgust. Such a carefree creature should not be allowed to physically exist -- and that sentiment had nothing to do with the grudge Hybrid felt for him. The simple thought of entering a house, wandering around, and then leaving for no reason at all boggled the mind. It boggled Hybrid's mind to be precise. He could feel his lip curling as he regarded the boy sitting there. He was the child who had interrupted his fight with the green-eyed black shewolf. Or, sheluperci. The woman had -- for some reason or another -- refused to part with her life. And then this child had come and distracted Hybrid. The white wolf deserved nothing less than a painful death.

Hybrid approached the boy from behind, stepping lightly through the sparse grass. He edged toward the sand and stones, flattening his ears in annoyance. He moved slowly now, not wanting to disturb his surroundings. The sun was beginning to set, far off in the distance, so Hybrid's shadow was concealed. If the boy was paying attention -- which Hybrid hoped he wasn't -- he might be able to catch Hybrid's scent on the breeze.

Hybrid moved closer, then leaned down, close, closer, to the boy and whispered, "I have come to claim my promise."

___ It was nice to be home, Apollo decided. This, after all, was going to be home from now on. It was a large place for just him all alone, but he would be fine. After all, he was sure he could convince Savina and her children to stop by every once in awhile. He would love for the beach house to be filled with spunky little puppies. When the breeze came softly it touched gently at his forehead. It was blowing north off the water towards the house behind him. The smell was deliciously salty and absolutely refreshing. He let one arm fall away from his knees to support his frame as he leaned back. When the sun did set, it was going to be lovely.

___ One gauged ear twitched forwards as the hot breath trickled towards it. There was not a moment to think, yet somehow his mind had managed to do just that. It was the damned coyote, he knew it without turning to see. And unfortunately for Apollo, his coveted knife had been abandoned in the beach house behind him. If the man struck, it would be simply a battle of tooth and claw.

___ He quickly pushed his frame from the pebbled shore, twirling to see the man he knew was behind him. "You’re trespassing," Apollo snarled, knowing that wouldn’t deter Hybrid from what he wanted.
