XD it's just too sad.

Anu was almost there! Hemming watched as the lithe female reached up to the branch that clung to the kite. A smile was plastered across his face in anticipation of their sucess, and he maneuvred around the tree to get the best view. Just as his blood was pumping from anticipation, it was also pumping from trepidation. Most of the branches up there were thin and would not support the lady's weight if she needed to grab onto them.

The male's eyes were fixed on the kite, and though they widened when the kite started to fall, they remained trained on the object as it plunged through the other branches of the tree. Quickly, he stepped crabwise around the thick trunk as he tried to predict where it would exit the aura of leaves. The kite bounced around, and seemed as if it was about to fall right in to his arms. Just as it was travelling through the last few branches, however, it struck one and was sent off to the side and to the ground.

Hemming rushed over to it and picked it up, curious to see if it had withstood the fall. The rescue mission hadn't been a complete failure: the kite was retrieved, if not in perfect condition. The frame was slightly crooked, but the male fixed it with a little tweaking, and the edges of the woven mat that had acted as the kite's sails were a bit frayed. Overall, though, the thing could probably still fly after a bit of reinforcement here and there. The male grinned and cried up to the female, "Don't worry! It's fine! Can you see a good way to get down?"

More important than the safety of the kite was that of the wolf that had retrieved it. Hemming held the kite at his side and shielded his eyes with the other hand, watching Anu.

Looking to the branch she held onto Anu was certain that she had never been so high before. Her sudden fear of heights was bizarre and so far fetched that she could even question it in her frazzled state of mind. His words were like the fluttering of the nearest leaf, nothing but buzzing in her ears. She needed to get out of the tree, and there was no power other then her own that would get her down. Taking a moment Anu just let the clear air fill her lungs. She felt her eye close, loosing the sight of the very distant ground and searching for her center and balance.

Just as quickly as the fear had filled her, Anu concurred it and began her dissent. Each branch led to another, and the ground grew closer and closer. No longer an entirely different world below or a dream Anu wished for, it was as solid and present as she needed it to be. Claws dug deeper then she liked, but the comfort of the living tower was not her priority. Foot-paws felt the soft grass, and Anu could finally put a smile on her face. Looking at the male, she felt embarrassed after having such a troubled time. She shook it form her limbs, Will it fly again? Her voice was light and hid the adrenaline that was leaving her body.

I'm just going to assume that Anu had the handle for the kite
and she gave it to Hemming when she started climbing the tree Tongue

Hemming's eyes stayed fixed on Anu's body as she stalled for a moment in the tree. The sunlight stopped reflecting off her eyes, a signal that the male took to mean that she had closed them. His heart started pounding harder, and he wondered why such action was being taken and hoped desperately that she wasn't about to pass out and fall from the tree. He was about to move towards the trunk, an action that would have come naturally but would have likely been completely useless, when the female opened her eyes again and started to climb down.

It took her a while for her to descend from such a great height, and Hemming didn't feel completely relieved until her feet were back on solid ground and a smile was on her face. He smiled as well, proud of the job she had done and pleased that the mission had been a success. He almost forgot about the kite until she mentioned it.

"Ah," he said, stepping over a bit to stand next to her and holding up the kite with both hands. "With just a bit of fixing up, I definitely think so." He put force on two ends of the kite to show how it shifted just a bit and that the joint would have to be tied tighter. The tail, though the leaves he had stuck in it had come out, was still hanging behind it. "Nice rescue," he said softly, looking back up to her face. "You're a good climber." His eyes wandered to the tip of the tree, where the female had just been standing, and he thought that he would never have been able to get up there with such efficacy.

After a few moments of being lost in thought, he looked back down to the kite. The string that had connected the thing to earth had broken fairly close to where it was attached. Hemming ran his fingers along it until he reached the end, fluffy and weak. "There's our problem," he said, laughing a little and holding it up so she could see. The fur he had spun to make the string had not been twisted tightly enough, and the two ends had just pulled apart. The male pulled the fur that would come off from it before taking the end of the string that was still attached to the handle. Making a thoughtful noise, he pulled an arm's length of string from the handle and tore that off before reattaching the string on the handle to the kite with a tight knot. Hemming threaded the string that he had just pulled off through a gap between the straw mat and the frame, wrapping it around the center a few times to make it more secure.

"Hm. That should do it." The thing didn't flex so easily in his grasp now, and though the edges of the straw mat were a little bit frayed there was nothing he could do about it save for make a new one. Smiling and feeling rather pleased by the ease with which the kite had been, more or less, put back together, he looked up to the female again. "Here," he said, holding the kite to her, "A present for you, if you'd like it. I'll make you a better one, some day." It was her boldness that let him hold the kite in his hands right now, so it only seemed fitting that she should keep it.

so sorry for the delay, and that’s a perfectly fine assumption

Relief pass through her body as the male spoke optimistically. Eyes watched with paws on hips, taking in the sight of his handy work and how he fixed the kite. She was sure that her hands would never move the way his did. His compliment made her smile, but her heart still felt heavy with concern. His eyes and mind work through the problems of the mangled kite, fingers moving gently long its edges in hopes of finding the flaw in its construction. Anu was sure he would find it, and there was confidence in her gaze, she knew he could repair it.

Blue eyes watched, looking for the break in the leash. Anu agreed in silence, nodding her head and even touching the weak stop with her fingers. She was happy to know that it could be fixed, and happy to know that he wasn’t upset about it. With his confirmation Anu let her smile grow, Oh good! her voice rang with an accomplished excitement, though she really hadn’t done much. A gift, for her? Surprise formed deeply into her features as she looked to his face, Oh, really? her voice giving off a small amount of her astonishment at the presentation of the kite.

Taking the kite in her paws Anu thought of moment the string broke and how she was the one to loose it. You trust it wont run from me again? There was laughter in her voice, blue eyes looking to his yellow.

The world still seemed as if it was tiny, restricted to a fragile bubble around the kite. As usual, Hemming found such a place, protected from the hunger and the strife of the outside world, much more pleasant. Make-believe was something he was beginning to find more and more attractive, and the adventure he was having with the alabaster female seemed close to it. Perhaps it was a regression back to childhood, a way of having those experiences in order to make up for the ones he had missed. He was lucky to have found a friend in Anu, who, despite her own age, was willingly pulled back into a carefree world.

He chortled at her comment, and for a moment was speechless. Their eyes met, and after a moment he shrugged and said, "Nah, I'm sure it was running from me. It probably likes you better." The male laughed a bit more, the oddness of what he was saying evident to him but still his last resort when any other words had failed to come. Such strange phrases were starting to become a staple of his conversations.

Though the kite had found its chance for freedom while Anu was holding it, it had been Hemming's poor spinning that let the kite escape in the first place. "And besides, you rescued it; it'd better appreciate you," he added, staring at the kite as it rested in her hands, with a smile on his lips.

i think we can wrap this up..?

Life was always different when she was with Hemming. Time could stand still and the rest of her responsibilities fall away, then they only remained. The two wolves had a friendship that Anu had never truly had before. It was innocent, genuine and brought her memories of her brothers. Though the two older males had never been so kind to her.
He spoke, and Anu looked from the kite back to his face. Anu laughed at the thought and the silly conversation they were having. Yeah, probably. She gave a small shrug, teasing him as she held the weightless toy.

Blue eyes drifted back to his face, the patters of gray cream and the golden eyes catching her thoughts for just a moment. She quickly changed them and wondered what she would do with it, and if she could ever make it fly again. Anu doubt she would be able to, but she had faith and could believe in such impossibilities. If its ready to leave its maker… Her voice drifted as she began to test the kite's weight in her hand. Soft tone called again as she looked down to it. I’ll take good care of it, keep it on its leash. she laughed.

the end Big Grin

Perhaps the next time the two wolves met Hemming would have developed a kite that was sturdier. It was certainly something he had enjoyed making, because it drew on a few different skills; weaving, spinning, and carving. And the product was fantastic. He had already pulled a couple of days of fun out of it, and hoped that Anu would be able to do the same.

"Oh, I think it's ready," the wolf responded, eyes flicking back up. The kite had been ready since the moment it was whole. The time that Hemming had it was just a trial run, and now it was off to fly with someone new. He laughed at his friend's next comment, and, finding nothing to say, just nodded, a twinkle in his eye. What a wonderful day it had been.
