The ugly duckling

Okay, I know it might be a bit too late for hatching eggs and all, but this was a very weird, slow one and stuff somehow, so there! I did not intend for this post to be this long either.. Backdated to first of june, btw! AW, 1000+

........
The season was growing warmer every day it seemed. It was an odd sensation to have white slowly melt away and be replaced by green, which now was scattered with colours of flowers. The girl never seemed to stop being amazed at the world that was slowly going through the circle of seasons right before her eyes. She had honestly believed spring would be her favourite season because of the new life that exploded out from nowhere, but the incoming summer was more magnificent than anything she had ever experienced before. While there at first had been only a few different sorts of flowers to choose from, there were now so many that the girl often did not know what to do. She could spend whole days roaming around in Aniwaya (although staying clear of the pack borders, as the world outside of Aniwaya was filled with puppy eaters!). Noir Aston was happy. More than anything, she was happy.

........
The early afternoon was sprinkled with magnificent colours as the girl ran playfully around in a flower field not too far away from the Aston family den. The air was filled with music delivered by birds and bees and everything else she could think of. A thick, aromatic perfume filled the light summer air. The smiling rays from the sun made the scene more than complete, and the light honey hued girl with the golden eyes rolled about together with her favourite octopus in the tall grass. Her melodic laughter sounded ever so often every time she discovered something new or found something exciting to look at. The butterflies were so pretty when they flew from flower to flower. She was filled with jealousy as she observed the beautiful wings carrying the insects though the air in a beautiful dance. If she could have chosen what creature she wanted to be reborn as, it would either be a colourful bird or a magnificent butterfly.

........
The girl’s train of thoughts were harshly interrupted as a light sound from a creature sounded from nowhere. It was very weak, but she was certain she had heard something. She knew what ducks were, and there had been some in a pond close by. Ears folded slightly backwards. The girl tried to stand up on her hind legs for a moment to get an overview over the flower field, but there was not much to see, and she lost her balance rather quickly and fell down on her bum, cream tail wagging slowly. It had not really been a duck like quack, it had been more like a.. baby squeak, small and cute. Was it a baby duck around here? The girl’s eyes turned into star shaped suns at the thought of her own little baby. Noir had accepted that snake babies could possibly be dangerous, but ducklings were not! Another timid squeak sounded, and the girl hurriedly moved in the direction of the sound.

........
It took some time to find the exact location, but after a while she found something. Uncle ho had taught her what an egg was, and she now knew that this was not a magic rock. However, it stroke her as odd that there still were eggs around, as she believed that most babies came earlier in the spring. The sound came from inside the egg. She had seen the baby ducks follow their mother, but there was no mommy duck here and it sounded like a baby duck sound from inside the egg. The puppy sniffed the partly hatched egg. Weren’t babies supposed to get out of their egg homes themselves? Another squeak sounded, and the girl gently poked the partly cracked shell with her black, wet nose. ”Hi baby!” the girl said brightly.

........
The egg was a bit bigger than the girl had believed duck eggs were, but she was aware that her imagination was weird and misled her sometimes. Golden eyes searched for a potential mommy duck, but the area seemed emptied for water loving animals. There were a lot of eggshells that seemed to be a bit old, but there were no babies or mommies anywhere. Yet another squeak brought the girl’s golden eyes back to the egg, and she saw movement from within the prison. ”Poor baby, you cannot get out?” the girl wondered and immediately decided that this was the case. Carefully, the girl lifted a paw to scratch on the cracked part of the egg. It seemed to help a bit, but she was afraid that her dull claws or pressure from her paw could hurt the little creature inside of it.

........
After a few minutes with scratching and even a nip or two with her teeth, there was some improvement, and all of a sudden there was enough space for a head to slowly emerge. It had a slightly long beak that made the girl certain of that it was a duckling. It looked wet, and the girl guessed it was because it had been so warm and sweaty inside the little egg. How could they survive inside the little egg with no air! The girl was slightly vary of the creature, and took a step back in case it wanted to bite her, because uncle ho said that some babies were bad. The thing squeaked and blinked in the strong sunlight. It’s beak was dark gray and its furry looking body seemed to be in several hues of gray. The ducklings the Aston girl had seen before were more yellowish, but perhaps that came later.

........
The puppy could not control herself, and gave the thing a quick lick that made the egg fell over slightly, bringing the duckling’s head with it. The girl gave a small gasp, but the animal did not seem to complain. More than anything, Noir was puzzled and amazed by what was happening, and one minute became many as she watched the creature slowly emerge from the egg, almost all on its own now except for when Noir could not help herself and tried to help by removing a few eggshells. It was so cute and pretty and it made super cute sounds. Noir was determined that she had saved its life by helping it out of the egg, at least in the start, because it had seemed all trapped in there! She licked the creature several times, and found that the baby did not seem scared of her, like the other duckling babies with their mommies. It was nice, because it was cute and Noir liked cute things!

Thought this thread looked a little lonely. <3 500+

To be home again in her initial birth lands, it was a feeling that she couldn't quite express at first. It felt as if every aspect about her let go and was destined to take it easy from here on out, despite the fact that of the Amara's return, there was certainly much responsibility and duties to uphold. The yearling however felt as if she had earned her time of relaxation, with the perilous journey taken in search of her younger sister Aiyanna and the rest of the AniWaya tribe that many of this current tribe probably didn't know about if Dawali did not recite such history to them. Thankfully the lot of them had been safe and in good spirits. Where they settled was a region that was fairly abundant and diverse; resourceful in prey and clean water. It was more of a convenience for most of the elders that drew back and remained behind, and for that Asha bid them the best of luck in their new settlements. It wasn't to say that the second trailing ground abandoned all hope with the original AniWaya tribe that traveled ahead, they just simply made accommodations with what worked best for them. That was what counted and mattered.

Leaving Aiden back by Grandfather's Tears (as he found satisfaction lingering around the cool waters), Asha took the day upon her own whim to travel about the AniWaya lands to see familiar landmarks of hers and visit areas at which she dearly missed passing by. There were so many features about the land that changed with the season, and even with the cause of erosion in some cases. The tribal lands certainly looked more festive, more alive with life in these warmer months. Asha personally always favored the hotter months out of the year than the colder ones, merely because there was much more activity to be had. Speaking of which, her soft gaze spotted a small figure not too far away. Currently in her lupus form, Asha had grown tired of walking on two legs, and for the sake of relaxation with her return, she reverted back to four legs. It seemed as if this small figure was inspecting something, perhaps playing. Seeing as how the initial scent that wafted from this pup was unrecognizable, Asha decided it would be best to take a closer look.

The red she-wolf stopped at a comfortable distance, tail wagging casually. The puppy seemed to have obtained a choice of duckling egg, one with a live duckling within! Simply watching the youngster try to figure out the construction and composition of the duckling egg, Asha stood by with a smirk as the interest of the innocent were truly a spectacle to behold in the world. Stepping just a little bit more closer (but not too much, as to not startle her), Asha finally called out to her and her situation in an amused, gentle voice. "Seems like you're the first official friend the duckling has in this world. How does it feel?" New life meeting nose to nose (or, nose to beak) with each other. Truly endearing, it reminded how carefree and mischeivious she had been when she was that young.

........
Its eyes were black. In another setting the child could have found it slightly unsettling, but it somehow fitted the little being well. Maybe it was the expression in them that somehow changed the black colour into something less threatening. There was no darkness lingering in those black orbs. Innocence. The girl could easily recognize that, as she could easily go under that adjective as well. The girl tilted her head while beaming at the odd creature, her tongue barely sticking out of here slightly parted lips. The well known desire to jump around in blind joy was there, as always, but the Aston child had quickly learned to control some of her emotions before they got out of hands. If she let herself go, she could risk hurting the little animal, and the girl could not bear that thought. She did not like the idea of harming other creatures. Yet, she was a wolf, a predator. In someone else’s eyes, this little creature was only a snack, but Noir’s emotions gave the duckling more value than a meal. The children were soon old enough to participate in pack hunts, but while the girl had easily attempted to catch fish, she had not yet attempted to hunt down another animal that did not live in the water. There was relief, somewhere inside of her, that there had not yet been a hunt where the Aston litter had been included. This was something that could not be avoided forever, but Noir did not have a desire to learn to hunt. She did not like the thought of ‘killing’.

........
The girl’s mind had wandered far away from the real word when a voice broke through and make the fur along her spine rise along with her heart rate. It took the girl a moment to gather enough to actually understand what the woman had said. Golden eyes had instantly found the source of the voice, and there was tension in the child’s upset glare. The duckling was for a moment completely forgotten and muted. A fleeting memory quickly moved past, teeth that made her hurt. Noir did not know this woman, and her nose found the Aniwaya scent on her depressingly weak. There was fear in her. The girl had never dared to exit the pack lands, especially not after what had happened the one time she had been close to exiting the lands. The wolves outside there could be dangerous, and they ate puppies! Her tan tail sought sanctuary between the girl’s legs, and for a moment the child could only stare pathetically at the older wolf, wondering if fleeing would be a good idea. However, nothing about the woman was threatening. Noir’s imagination could quickly make up something fake to make up for the lack of real threat, but the girl was aware of her active imagination. The woman looked kind, and her words were no less.

........
The light girl relaxed slightly, though a bit embarrassed that she had not noticed the other wolf approach. So it was true for all to see that Noir had a duckling friend! The smile that so quickly had vanished slowly crept back to its righteous place on her lips when she replayed the woman’s words. ”Yes!” the girl yipped back, excitement slowly taking over, helped by the adrenaline that had started its circulation around in her body. How did it feel? It made the girl feel happy! ”It makes me happy because it is so cute and I really think cute things are pretty and I like babies because I want to be a mummy.” The girl had worked hard on her speech and corrected most of the errors that had been all too apparent when she had been younger, but there were still some issues she was struggling with. Mostly she said what she was thinking, and more often than not it made her sentences long and sometimes a bit weird. She still held the status of a child, so her speech would still seem more adorable than retarded.

To be honest, the initial action the girl had upon Asha was quite surprising; one that generated a series of blinks at first from her soft amber gaze. Noting her tail tucking neatly between her legs, and the sudden apprehensive persona the pup took on, Asha was surprised to see such a gesture elicit from her. Was Asha scary in a sense? She didn't think she looked mean, and couldn't pull off a mean enough look to startle anyone (there was either always a pleasant grin or a smirk on the red she-wolf's muzzle anyway). There was slightly puzzlement that settled in, causing her to tilt her head to the side slightly in question to the pup's gestures, but as soon as it came and went, the creamy hued girl relaxed. It was then Asha figured out that it was probably just the instinct of a pup when strangers approached, which was a valid reason enough for any pup to remain apprehensive. The little girl was smart for being cautious, and speaking of which, the faint scent of what smelled like Tayui wafted from her fur? Asha had not seen Tayui since their group first settled in these very lands, and was compelled to know (and be convinced) that Tayui had pups while Asha was on hiatus from AniWaya.

Leaving that fact to unravel itself much later on, the focus was upon the little duckling and the puppy who sought out its presence. At the girl's excited reply, Asha's smirk widened along her red mottled muzzle. Observing the newly hatched duckling, it did look very cute in this stage of its life. What stood out even more was the fact this puppy wanted to be a mommy herself one day, in which Asha was slightly surprised to hear such talk come from someone so young yet. When she was a pup, motherhood was oh so far from her mind. "You want to be a mommy already?" She questioned aloud, although there was certainly nothing wrong with wanting to be a mommy so young. Responsibility, however, was a big factor with that. "Well, i'm thinking the duckling probably thinks you're already it's mommy, seeing that you're the first thing its seen since it hatched." And one could certainly tell that, for the duckling was all focused upon the creamy pup. "Do you think you can handle being a mommy right now? With the responsibility?" Her question was kindly put, more interesting in hearing the answers that were to come from her, since kids usually said the darndest things!

........
The world seemed safe and right again, and the girl relaxed comfortably, watching the small creature. She felt special because she was allowed to be so close to it without sending it feeing into the pond and out of reach. She did not understand why animals usually ran from her if she came up too close. It was not as if she ever wanted to hurt them. She only wanted to get a better look at them and feel their fur or feathers or whatever they had. She was curious, and loved the life she saw all around her, especially in this season, when everything seemed to possess magic. No, the blonde child had yet to get used to the brilliant world she lived in. She could spend hours watching the wildlife, and it was a shame that she had to do it from afar. She absolutely adored the colourful birds that inhabited the trees, but she had never managed to get very close to one, as they seemed especially shy most of the time. It was a shame. If they only could knew how much happy they would have made her if they sat down and sang for her up close. From distance was beautiful too though.

The woman’s gentle question about wanting to be a mommy brought the girl out from her absent daydream. It was odd, sometimes she lost herself completely within seconds. There was so many different pretty things to think about, and it was difficult to reel herself in once that happened. Golden eyes studied the woman’s face, the pretty and PINK markings. It was so pretty. She almost started to drift away again. ”Of course, my mommy is the best mommy in the world and I want to be one just like her and have cute babies that are very pretty and soft and that I can take care of and love a lot.” the girl said, her tail picking up its speed at that exciting thought. Yes, Tayui was the best mother in the world, and the little girl wondered when babies would start to grow in her own belly. She got a sudden rush to ask the older woman. Older members were smart, and perhaps she would know when Noir would become a mommy. Was this unnamed woman a mommy too?

The girl wrinkled her nose at the Aniwaya adult’s theory. What? But Noir was no duck, so that could not be. Together with the question if she would be able to handle it, Noir felt very confused, and her expression made her confusion obvious. She was a wolf and a duck was not a wolf, so she could not be its mommy. ”That is silly, I am not a duck!.” the girl suddenly giggled, wondering if the woman had been joking with her. Although, it would have been cute to have a baby duckling baby walk all around. There were stars in the girl’s eyes, and suddenly she hoped what the adult had suggested was true. ”But.. I don’t even have milk in my belly to feed it.” she said with sadness. She wouldn’t want the baby to die of hunger either.

Ah, to be a puppy again. Those were the good days, Asha could vouch for that indefinitely. To have such a profound curiosity about the world, to not know anything and be on a forever quest to figure out the mechanics of everything, the Amara could say that was one of the qualities that she misses about her younger innocence. That everything and anything is possible in the world to puppies, even the care of a creature out of their species. The imagination, it was endless. Such imagination could indeed run its course through adulthood, but in actuality it could never match the fervent minds of juveniles and youths. Asha tried to obtain her imagination as much as she could; it was crucial in a world like this nowadays, with violence, confusion, corruption. Best to protect the values of the innocent while one still could, and carry it on like a gene.

The blonde child was endearing, really. Her red ears flicked, listening as the girl stated how her mother was top of the line with making the best offspring, how pretty she was, and how the girl admired her so. Also, the fact that the puppy's own puppies would be a blast for her to take care of. You didn't typically hear things like that from puppies as young as this one, so this creamy pup struck Asha as peculiar and interesting. At least that was a good thing to hear, that puppies nowadays looked up to their families for guidance, and had some sense of compassion for others in them. It seemed to be a running trend within the tribe lands, and Asha was only happy to know of this. Speaking about her mother, it slightly made Asha remind herself of her own deceased mother. That thought simply couldn't stay in her mind for long, due to the fact that her sadness and sorrow for her mother was already spent, and there was no use mulling about the past and what was done. Mischka, she would run through the spirit of Asha and Aiyanna, and as long as her spirit was around, that was what counted. Tilting her head to the side as the blonde girl previously spoke of her mother, it was the perfect moment to inquire who her mother was, and Asha figured she might just have a good notion as to who it was. "Your mommy is the best mommy, huh? I can say the same for my own, although she's not here anymore. Do you mind if I ask what your mommy's name is?" Asha would receive her mother's name before the name of the pup before her, but Asha didn't want to rush introductions; everything would come out on its own whim.

At her statement that she wasn't a duck, Asha couldn't help but laugh along with her giggle. This girl, she was a smart one, especially what she was to say next about not having enough milk for the duckling to provide it a meal. "You're right about that. You don't have feathers, or a beak! But! Sometimes you don't have to look like something else in order to give it affection, love, and care." Asha pointed out, adverting her gaze to the duckling, which was making little quacking sounds every now and then. "I don't believe ducks drink milk. They like what other birds like, namely bugs. The creepy crawlies! You know, spiders, crickets, worms..." The Amara trailed off, assuming that the pup knew well enough about insects and the like.

Well, truth be told Noir only had one mother, so it could not really be fair to say with such determination that her mommy was the best mommy in the whole world. The thing with Noir was that she actually could say such things and be one hundred percent certain that what she believed in actually was the ultimate truth. The child’s face always glowed with warmth whenever she spoke of her family, especially Tayui. Noir had never lacked a father, not with her mother’s loving nature and devotion. Perhaps Dawali had taken the place where the biological father should be, and now the girl also had Uncle Ho. The unique bond between uncle and niece was highly peculiar, but it was also very beautiful how the two relatives had founded a blooming friendship despite the ugly start. Noir’s family had to be the best family in the whole world. She was just so unbelievably happy with everything.

The woman with the pretty face asked and Noir was more than pleased to be of assistance.
”My mommy is Tayui Aston and I am Noir Aston, because Aston is our family. My mommy’s name is pretty and mine is too, don’t you think?” Noir liked her own name at least. It was light and pretty and short, and once her mommy had shown her how it was written, and it looked very pretty. Pretty names for pretty girls. She wondered if the pretty lady was called something pretty sounding. Noir’s smile danced in her face as she beamed up at the adult. The woman had not gone ahead and eaten her nor the baby duckling, so she had to be a really nice lady. If it had been Attila that had come to see the baby duckling, then Noir would actually have feared for the baby’s life, but this woman had been so nice and comfortable from the first moment. Noir liked her a lot already.

Although the blonde child already knew that there was no milk for babies inside of her, it still disappointed her slightly to hear the older female agree and confirm that no, she did not have any. A tiny miraculous possibility had been shut out. She wished it was not so. Thankfully the disappointment was quickly drowned in the relief that the baby duckling did not drink milk. Also, it seemed that it actually was possible for the baby to like Noir despite the fact that they were two entirely different species. The blonde child looked down on the black eyed baby. She could feel her cheeks blush slightly as she felt warmth and love caress her own heart. She wanted to be its mommy. She wanted it so much.
”Don’t worry, Baby Duck, mommy-Noir will take care of you, poor baby.” the girl cooed down at the adorable creature that now officially was her baby. It felt amazing.

”Oh, are you hungry, baby?” the girl went on, easily forgetting the larger adult. She got a feeling of urgency. Babies did not talk, and she had no idea how long time it took for a baby to die from starvation.
”We must find it food before it dies!” These words were directed at the adult. Of course, there was no doubt in the girl’s heart that the older woman would help save Noir’s only child!

Apologies for the delay, I'm getting back into the swing of things again. O_x 500+

The red-wolf absolutely wished she had the opportunity to have her own mother, Mischka, around again. She missed her mother so, although Asha could certainly say that the heartache that Dawali felt for his deceased mate was certainly greater than her own pain. Still, Asha missed her just as intensely. Mischka was in existance to Asha for only a short time, most of which Asha couldn't really seem to remember much of her except precious, cherished moments spent. Apparently, Asha was something of an almost reincarnation of her mother. Her personality was sociable, strong willed, and defiant. Dawali stated many times before that Asha (and also in a sense, Aiyanna as well) were the only two things in this world that lingered about Mischka. The very thought of Mischka made tears want to prick at the back of her eyes, but knowing of the wishes and the temperament that her mother held, Mischka wouldn't want them to shed tears about her. She would have wanted them to celebrate the life that she lived, and the prosperity of their family lineage to come from her influence.

As the blonde child went into the throes of explaining who her mother was and her own name, Asha couldn't help but chortle a gentle laugh. So Noir was her name, and Tayui Aston was her mother. Asha instantly recognized the name of Tayui, seeing as how Tayui was one of the first founding members of AniWaya in these lands, and Asha had been included in that group as well. Furthermore, with Noir asking if her name and her mother's names were pretty for their like, Asha complied with a smile and head nod. "Yes, your names are very pretty indeed. Noir, it sort of sounds like it has a taste of French to me. Anyways, I actually know something about your mother, Tayui! She was one of the first wolves in the pioneering group to come settle in these lands with the tribe. I honestly didn't have the honor to talk to her back then, but I sure do know who your mother is now." Asha said, hoping now to possibly find some common interest within the girl. "I also have a sister and a father. Do you know who my father is? He looks a lot like myself..." Asha decided to quiz Noir, seeing if the blonde girl happened to know of her direct relation to no other than the Bone Bearer of AniWaya.

Transitioning their focus back upon the duckling again, Asha smiled warmly at Noir's fondless of the duckling. Perhaps the two could develope some sort of lasting relationship with one another, seeing as how it was possible to form a close bond with another species of nature. With her eyebrows raising now as Noir delcared that they had to find a food source for the duckling, Asha nodded at such a request, and her amber eyes momentarily strayed about the scenery around them for these such sources of food. "Well. I'm assuming that maybe the duckling would like a worm or two, maybe even little fish." Asha wasn't entirely certain just what ducklings ate, but seemingly if the duckling was that hungry, it might as well just eat whatever was presented to it. "Lets see if we can find some ground insects. Worms, maybe even little fish somewhere, yes? Would you like to help?" Asha offered to Noir, and of course the pup would comply.

(500) Maybe end this soon? Smile

Asha guessed that her name sounded French, and this was very very correct. It actually was French. The little child felt very smart for knowing this, because she had never been in France, where they supposedly spoke that language, at least according to her mother. The girl’s ears flickered in absolute interest when the stranger Asha woman said that she knew something about Noir’s mommy. When that information had been retrieved, Noir wondered if she had known this from before or not. Tayui told her children many things, but they were not always good listeners. Noir was a dreamer dancing after colours, and lost quite a lot of what people told her if it was not of interest. Now when this was knowledge that bound the woman together with Tayui, Noir felt more open for the other female, although she had not held back her nature by not knowing the woman either. ”So you know my mommy from before I was here!” the girl said loudly, finding it odd that there had actually been a world before she had been born. It was not fair, because then Asha had known Noir’s mother even longer than Noir had.

Those thoughts were scuffled away instantly when Noir was asked if she could guess who Asha’s daddy could be. The child’s golden eyes started investigating the woman closely, but her head was rather empty. Asha was an adult, and therefore her daddy had to be very old! Noir was not good with age and the calculation that could be done to reveal that the man that was the pink marked woman’s father did not have to be old at all. Noir just knew that her mommy looked a bit older than some other members. Although the resemblance to Dawali was plain to see, Noir was unable to see the connection. Dawali did not look old in any way, so it was taken for granted that he could not have a daughter. He did not have a mommy to be a daddy with either, so she did not consider him at all. "I don’t know.” the girl quickly announced, losing interest all too soon as well because she wanted to look and talk to and about the gray baby duck that thought that Noir was a duck mommy.

The girl started instantly digging for worms. ”You can find fish and I can find worms? I can’t catch fish with my bum because it is small, not like Uncle Ho’s large bum that he catches fishes with!” She had tried to fish, but had never managed to do so. It was sad, because she liked the taste that her ivory uncle had introduced to her. Her golden eyes fell upon the duckling ever so often, amazed that it simply stood there and stared and occasionally picked at the dark earth. Poor baby, it had to be so so super hungry. Noir very well knew how it was to be super hungry (no, not really, but she imagined so), so it was very important that they found food at once so that the duck would not die, because that would be sad and suggest that Noir was a bad mother that made her children die.
