The sea giveth and taketh

Zana had been sitting on the beach staring at the giant carcass of the beast that had been blown upon the beach during the storm. The largest mass of seagulls she'd ever seen had been gathering about the creature and picking their fill from it's body. Zana was surprised at how quickly the massive frame had already begun to diminish. Beneath the skin a lot of the blubber had been eaten away at and she could see the bones of the massive whale showing white in the sunlight. Her mind was slowly beginning to tick away at all the things she could use the bone for. They would make excellent darts, far better than the wooden ones she used now.. and she could make better pikes and spears.. The carcass was like a blessing in disguise. Now she just had to figure out how to get the bones from the beast.

The small form of the girl quickly scaled the large form of the whale that was starting to smell. She wrinkled her nose at the smell as she began to poke and pry at the thick flesh of the beast, for once ignoring the seagulls as she tossed the chunks of flesh and blubber to the noisy birds as she began to dive into the ribcage of the massive fish. She would skin and butcher the creature if it was the last thing she did. When Zana wanted something Zana got it.

It was the stench that alerted Jael to the corpse of the bizarre sea beast. The screaming of countless seagulls followed, and he trailed the signs, finally finding the giant monster that lay dead on the sand. He'd never seen anything like it before in his life, but he knew it had come from the sea. Decayed fins and a form meant for gliding through the dark depths of the ocean told the wolf all he needed to know. He wrinkled his muzzle in disgust, pausing to take in the strange sight before him. But there was something else about the carcass that attracted his notice and the boy watched the small girl climbing the side of the monster, picking and digging at it's rotted side as though she were looking for something special. Cocking his head, he loped a few paces closer, aiming to make sure he really saw what he thought he did. Yes. A small child was scaling the whale and invading it's blubbery corpse for.. what, he didn't know. Bones? Meat?
Not particularly wishing to touch the corpse himself, Jael moved along it's edge, gazing at the strange thing. Books and stories told of great sea-monsters the size of buildings, but he'd never expected to encounter one in his lifetime. Having circled halfway around the thing from head to tail, he turned back, finally gazing upward at the child. "What're you doing?" he asked, loud enough for his voice to carry to here in her work. The seagulls screamed and swooped, guarding their prize against the canines and Jael snapped his fangs at one that drifted too close, aiming to take a few feathers off, but he missed. Glaring at he, he turned back to the miniature coyote, watching her dig her way into the side of the dead whale.

Zana hasn't realized that one of her clan mates had come upon the scene as she was busy hacking away at the dead beast. She bared her little fangs to the male below as she grinned down at him, barely missing hitting him with a slab of the whale's flesh as she called down. "I'm going to make better weapons.." she said, as thought it was that simple. She didn't even stop to think that the male might not even know what she was talking about or even consider that it was possibly to use part of the whale for anything but eating. It had taken her a while to hack into the beast's side but she soon found the base of one of the ribs though she knew it would be a long time before she was able to actually get the bones off the corpse. She frowned, realizing that she hadn't really imagined just how long it might take her to attempt to do this.

Sighing to herself she abandoned her chore for a moment and slide down the side of the whale and approached the male, knowing that the scent of the beast must be a little bit awful on her fur. She grinned evilly as she asked. "What do you wanna know?" Her small voice nearly drown from the area by the call of the birds and the rush of the waves about them. She smiled and played at the knife as she waited to see what he had to say.

Nimbly stepping aside to dodge a hunk of flying whale meat headed for his face, Jael again peered up at the tiny girl. She looked a lot younger than she was from her size and small features, but Jael himself was in a similar situation though he didn't yet realize it. Build smaller than he was supposed to be at his age--growth stunted by lack of nutrition, he was thinner and frailer than nature dictated, but not nearly as severely as was for this girl. "I see," he replied, curious by her determination and bizarre source for new weapons. Jael knew of home-made weapons carved from bone and stone, but from the corpse of a decaying whale? It seemed strange even to him.
Quickly, she grew temporarily tired of the task and slide down the animal's side to stand near the pale boy, reeking of rot as she did so. He wrinkled his muzzle faintly, sliding his ears back for just a moment before disregarding the unfavorable stench that lingered on her coat. "Just curious," he replied idly, turning his gaze back to the great monster beside them. "You aim high in your ambitions, huh?" he asked lightly, smiling just faintly as he looked back to the small girl.

Zana was not a patient creature and though she knew in time that the corpse would rot, be eaten and the bones left to bask in the sun, the only reminder of the great beast of the sea.. she still wanted to mold this idea now and tomorrow would not do! The small girl peered at the male as she wiped off her knife as he spoke. She had no clue what in the world this boy wanted with her but she could tell he smelled of Inferni though his body's frame screamed wolf. She narrowed her eyes as she carefully put the knife back where it belonged before she began to groom out the grit and grime from her pelt.

When he commented on her ambitions Zana couldn't help but glare at him, assuming that the remark had been a mark on her size and not the beast she sought to conquer this day. "What's that suppose to mean?" she asked as she ruffled her pelt, wondering if he was here to pick on her. "What have you ever done?" She didn't even know who in the hell this male was.

A look crossed her face suggesting distrust as she began to groom her knife and pelt, followed by an outright glare at his casual comment. Obviously, he hadn't meant to offend her, not knowing she was sensitive about her diminutive stature that he was not even aware yet was unusual. He stepped back in confusion as harsh words erupted forth from her maw, unsure what he'd said that had been taken wrongly by the girl. "What?" he uttered, a puzzled look apparent on his features. "I simply meant a whale was an interesting place to look for weapons—that is all," Jael replied, attempting to make amends with the creature. "You could use an elk or a deer for bones, but you're going all out with it. I apologize if something I said offended you," he finished, utterly thrown off by what had just transpired.
