for diavo, harrow road landfill! :] (384)

Picking his way precariously through the garbage, head down and nose to the dirt, Jael was scouting out the terrain to his home once again. He’d silently pledged to memorize the area and what lay beyond, determined to at least prove somewhat useful to the clan in any way possible. Seagulls screamed and swooped against the clouds above, landing on the human’s junk and peering with wary, beady eyes at the lurking predator. Snapping his fangs at one as it landed too close, he watched, amused, as it took flight in terror, sending the rest into the sky from it’s frenzied cries. Rain wasn’t falling for a change, but the heavens above were a flat, dull white that continued to block out the needed sunshine. The hybrid snorted softly.

Spying movement out of the corner of his eye, he was instantly alert, muscles tensing along his sleek body. Bursting into action, jaws snapped around the body of the rat—it’s scream filling the air and momentarily overpowering the cries of the birds as its life was cut short in the predator’s jaws. At least he’d found a snack in this wasteland. Draining the rodent of its life-giving blood, the corpse was tossed aside with a flick of his head, landing beside the ruin of a former automobile. Curiosity overtook the young male and he stepped toward the rusted shell, leaning onto his back legs to peer into the interior. Leaping, he moved within and crawled into the driver’s seat. Weight shifted and a sudden, screeching siren overpowered his senses. Yelping in alarm, Jael twisted violently, searching for the source. The second he moved the sound stopped. Confused and on edge, hackles raised, the wolf peered around the car, noting the steering wheel wedged against his frame.

Tenderly, one paw lifted to prod the thing, only to once again bring to life the ear-splitting sound. Immediately, his paw was removed and he leapt into the backseat, hoping not to find anymore frightening noises. Sniffing curiously around, he pushed against the unhinged backdoor, but didn’t exit. Turning around and around to test the seat’s leathery surface with his paws, the youth lay himself across the backseat and closed his eyes, aiming to take a nap for a little while before continuing his exploration of the area.

The pup had begun to gain more confidence in her new home, the troubles of the past slipping more and more from her mind with each passing day, and the joys of being young and curious helping her gain more experience in her new life. She had not readily ventured far from her meeting area with Enigma and Gabriel, but as she gazed to the sky with her small auburn orbs, it appeared that even though it was not sunny out, today was the first day that it was not going to rain. Elation coursed through her tiny body as she introduced a little bounce in her step. Feeling in high spirits, she decided that she would use this day to be a little more bold, and a little more curious than a young coyote already is, and explore.

Lifting her cinnamon muzzle to the cloudy sky, she closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, trying to pick an interesting smell from the plethora that this new land offered. Suddenly, something piqued her interest. She had never smelled it before, but the scent was sweet, rotten, and new all at the same time. Curiosity consuming her, she set her four, small, clumsy paws in the direction of the interest. Scenting that it was fairly close, she had no fears about returning to a safe place before bed time after her exploration.

As she traipsed forward, her wounded leg seemed to be feeling better, even without any more attention then a few licks to it, it seemed that the damage was nothing worse than leaving her limping for a few days. She was, however, famished, and was curious how she was going to find her next meal. There had not been many times where her family had the time to show her how to fend for herself, but there was always a meal brought to her paws when she was hungry. Frowning slightly, she kept moving forward, determined to find some new excitement out of the caves.

The scent soon became overpowering, and while she did not understand it, it seemed to be coming from the entire area in front of her. The closer she got to the hills the stronger the scent was. Confused, she closed in on a small heap, sniffing deeply and investigating. The entire area just seemed to be mounds of dirt and rubbish. Rats zipped from hides to holes, and birds nearly the size of her swooped over-head. Cowering slightly as one swooped too closely, she then growled. She wasn't going to let these flying creatures boss her around- she had found this place too, and she was going to enjoy it. Glancing around keenly, she crouched and crept forward slightly, trying to remember how she played with her kin, sneaking up and pouncing on them. This time, however, she was going to use these tactics on the rats in attempt to catch one for dinner.

Spying a medium sized, but well fed, rat, her eyes widened even more, and she became as flat as she could. Not being able to hold her composure for long, she sprang forward at the rodent with tremendous force for her size and landed where it had been sitting and CRASH! She not only landed on no rat, but a large piece of sheet metal half covered in dirt which had dislodged upon her landing, making a very loud commotion. Groaning, she sat up and shook off, looking around for the vanished rat which had no doubt scurried very quickly away.

lol, thanks. :] (359)

Rolling onto his side, legs tucked against his belly, the hybrid dozed within the car’s backseat. Just as sleep began to finally overtake him, the boy was jerked from his rest by a loud, ear-shattering sound that sent every hair on his body on end. Again, leaping to his feet with a dull snarl, fiery eyes peered through the car windows for the source. Nothing was in sight. Huffing softly, Jael slid fluidly from within the car, deciding this place was far too loud for his senses to even attempt a nap any longer. Long wolf’s legs carried him smoothly and swiftly across the terrain, but he hadn’t gone far before a new scent reached his nose—curious enough to come to his attention through the naturally pungent odors of the wasteland. It was a young coyote, more than likely belonging to Inferni. Jael couldn’t honestly say he’d encountered every member of the clan quite yet, but the girl seemed to be alone—he couldn’t smell any other clan members or coyotes in the vicinity. Regardless of this area belonging to Inferni, it still wasn’t safe for a child to be alone anywhere this close to wolf territory.

Wolves trespassed boldly into their territory, disregarding their obviously marked borders and had no qualms about snatching up young coyotes and murdering them without a second thought. It simply meant less competition for the wolves, annihilating their smaller cousins especially before they even had the chance to grow into a full, hunting predator. Spotting the sandy-coated girl, Jael crept in close, keeping his posture loose and unimposing so as not to frighten her. Not only was he obviously a stranger to the girl, he knew he looked more like a wolf than coyote, and he knew nothing of her circumstances and fears. For all he knew she already hated wolves and would classify him as one on sight. “Hey!” he called out calmly, voice loud enough to be heard over the shrieking of seagulls, but not enough to startle the child into bolting. “Shouldn’t someone be watching you?” he inquired, stopping his forward movement at a good enough distance from the little girl.

ooc SO sorry for keeping you waiting. Summer school is proving to be more of a challenge than I thought. D:

Sniffing the air with short breaths, she attempted to pick up the trail of the escapee rat. As she breeze picked up, it blew against her fur as it came in behind her, and as it did so, a new scent snaked its way into her tiny dark nostrils. Fear instantly coursed through her exsistance as she smelled him before he spoke to her. She turned very slowly around on her paws, and as her bright eyes made contact with the speaker, her fear was instantly justified.

In horror, her fur rose on ends over the entirity of her body, for standing infront of her was a young male wolf- his fur long, white, and glossy, covering the very same muscles that so irrationally ruined her family not so long ago. His posture allured to that of a friendly or even gentle creature, but her trust was shot when in came to his species.

Her tiny tan claws extracted and dug into the soft trash heap, her fear slowly but surely turning into a rage that she had never felt before. Of course, her being the size she was, and he being his, there really would not have been any fair fighting chance for her. However, her hate gave her a strong sense of empowerment, and she was ready and willing to quite frankly, tear him a new one.

Flattening her red ears against her skull, she bared tiny white fangs at him, which had not even been shed yet. Calling forth the deepest voice she could muster, she braced her front legs sturdily against the dirty ground. Completely disregarding his greeting, she spat at him, "You better back off.. or, or, you jus' might get hurt."

It only figured that she was absolutely terrified of him when he simply wished to help. Head low and body loose, his posture held none of the normal signs of hostility, but it was his wolfish look alone that struck fear into the girl’s heart. Obviously he had no idea her entire family had been stolen away from her by his “kind” before her very eyes, but she was now a member of his clan, and he would look after fellow clan members. It was a duty to their pack and family that he couldn’t avoid, no matter if she wished him dead for no real reason of his own. “Calm down,” he said lightly, otherwise not moving. He had to take this situation carefully, or it would easily get out of hand. And he didn’t wish to be responsible for this girl bolting and getting herself into worse trouble than she already was alone here in the landfill.

She looked like she thought she could take him on, bracing herself for a fight and baring fangs like they’d do more than nick his skin. Foolish, but it was almost admirable if asinine bravely could be considered a good personality attribute. “I’m just as much a member of Inferni as you are, so you’d better put those fangs away and save them for when you’ll really need them,” he stated coolly, warning in his tone. If Jael had been another the lack of discipline and submission from this child could mean her death sentence. And if she’d been faced with a real wolf willing to eat her, baring fangs and standing her ground would do no good when her stature barely reached their chest.
