Someday Never Comes

Phoenix
Summer had without a doubt run its course, and now the transitional season of fall was upon them. Phoenix looked forward to the winter, when the snows invigorated his arctic wolf heritage and allowed him to truly come alive, but this season had its moments of magic too. The pack lands had transformed completely: trees looked like they were afire, the ground crunched underneath his paws in most places when he walked. Phoenix anticipated membership to increase, as it always did when lone wolves sought a more stable lifestyle to survive the winter. While he would rather they come to stay, he could not deny them access when they gave him no real reason to. The world was a much different place looking through the eyes of an alpha. He had to think strategically, keeping two steps ahead in his planning before making any moves. If Phoenix had been familiar with the human game called chess, he would have thought it an apt comparison to the life of a leader.

One other thing that chess made a good metaphor for was parenthood. Being an alpha took time away from being a father, and it broke Phoenix’s heart that he was unable to spend every minute with his children and be there whenever they needed him. Already he could sense it creating tension between him and his mirror-image son Icarus. Kansas was the quietest of the children, the youngster who blended in with the others and didn’t do anything to stand out on his own. That only made Phoenix wonder about his light-colored son. Perhaps he had just been too busy to notice Kansas’ characteristics. That he would have to rectify.

Kansas slumbered peacefully, but Phoenix had always had a tendency to rise before the sun. As the first rays of morning beamed into the den, the father gently nuzzled the small boy. “G’mornin’, son,” he whispered, trying not to awaken the other four wolves in the den. “How would you like t’come patrol th’borders with your old man today?”

Kansas

Kansas had noticed that his father was busy, diligently tending to the duties of the pack. He didn’t yet recognize what exactly those duties were (curious as he was), but he did know that Phoenix took care of the large group of wolves Kansas lived among, as well as his immediate family. But the boy wanted more time with his father, wanted to connect with him in a similar way that Icarus did. Maybe it would never be the same; but though he wasn’t jealous, he wanted to be just as close to Phoenix. He truly admired his father for his calmness and devotion to his mother and his siblings, as well as to himself.

In the two months that had elapsed since his birth, he’d taken note of the chill that was settling within his home. It wasn’t his favorite thing, but at least he had sisters and a brother to snuggle against. Firefly was especially warm, or maybe she seemed that way because of his relationship with her. He didn’t sense the movement, so deeply was he sleeping, dreaming of oddly-colored, dancing leaves. But he felt the damp nose nudge his small back, and his stunning eyes flickered open. He lifted his head, recognizing the chill as he escaped the dreamy world. Next to him was the large, comforting form of his father, dim in the shadowed environment of the den.

The boy yawned, exposing tiny teeth as he stretched his jaws. His father’s words drifted into him, warming him. So they would have time together. He grinned with joy, rising onto still-asleep legs and moving a bit closer to Phoenix. “Mowning, daddy,” he returned. His words were almost tentative, though within he was overcome by elation. He’d get a sneak peak at some of those “duties” his father attended to. “R-really?” he murmured, the word broken by another yawn.

Phoenix
Thankfully the other wolves of Storm weren’t too needy. They could take care of themselves for the most part. But Phoenix still wanted more time with his mate and his children. Gibraltar couldn’t have left at a worst time, and now Phoenix was stuck with a mantle he had never asked for. But carry his burden he did, and without complaining aloud. He had to set a good example not only for the rest of the pack, but especially for his children. Everything he did, he did to make their lives as good as possible. They deserved no less from him.

That kind of devotion he hadn’t gotten from his father. Now, Anubis had been a good father up until he had disappeared. Phoenix didn’t resent his father for circumstances that had been out of his control, but as a pup he’d made a vow that if he ever somehow survived and become a father of his own, he would give his children everything he never had. A warm home, plenty to eat, and the safety and security that only a loving parent could provide. And Phoenix did love his children; he loved them for the fine wolves they were already developing into. Someday they would each make him proud, he knew that deep inside.

“Of course,” the patriarch said, grinning as he watched his son slowly rise to his feet. Deciding to help, Phoenixput his nuzzle under his son’s warm belly and pushed him onto his legs. “It ain’t nothin’ too excitin’; we’re jus’ gonna walk ‘round the borders an’ make sure nothin’ bad got in last night. You’ll be doin’ this job on your own someday, once you’re a big, strong grown-up. We might as well start trainin’ t’day, eh?” Hopefully those days would take their sweet time getting here though. “C’mon!”

I'll just go 'head and put up my last post, since it's not up there. <3

_____ The boy couldn’t help but see his father as an image of perfection. He had the notion that those who had packs to keep in order (little as Storm needed order upheld) were busy, juggling time for others with time for themselves. And now, Phoenix had a family to look after as well. He was well aware that his father had a lot to do, yet always he found time to spend with each of his siblings. Those times were few for Kansas so far. Well, maybe not few, but he had a strong desire to spend one-on-one time with his father, his idol.

_____ He felt similarly about Moon. Kansas loved the way his brother was like him; shy, quiet, with a strong bond to a sister. He found himself always anticipating the next time he would see Moon with joy in his heart. But for now, time with his father was a treat, and it excited him more than anything ever had in his so-far short time of living.

_____ He grinned and made an ‘umph’ sound when he felt the gentle nudge beneath his belly, nearly lifting him off his feet, where he would have slid off like a bar of soap. But he was push to his little paws just enough so that he stood, teetering with the aftereffects of sleep. He gazed at his father with large, bright eyes as he heard the soothing voice. Kansas knew that it was nothing terribly riveting for most, but to him, it was like going to an amusement park. He wondered a bit about the part of doing the job himself, not realizing that it meant the aging and perhaps death of Phoenix. He merely grinned at the prospect of having an important job someday.

_____Okay, papa,” he said softly, starting toward the exit of the den, excitement pulsing through him. He suddenly had a fearful thought, and voiced it uncertainly. “You don’t really think anyfing bad got in, do you?” He wanted Storm, and its occupants, to be safe.

Sorry it’s so short. They couldn’t have picked a worse day to move the board. XD

Phoenix often liked to fantasize about one of his children some day inheriting his crown. Of course, he knew that the mantle of alpha was not passed on my heredity but by worthiness. But it was still a nice thought, having a respectable legacy to pass on to his prodigy. All seven of his children were good wolves, but he wondered just who would someday develop the skills and wisdom to lead a pack. Would it be the intellectual Moon, the energetic Sun, the caring Ember, the fiery Sadira-child Firefly? Or perhaps it would even be one of the less likely ones, such as the distant Icarus or even the quiet follower Kansas, who stood before him right now? The future was unsure, but full of promise.

The patriarch smiled encouragingly for his son as he followed him outside. Really, Phoenix could count with one paw the number of harmful intruders that had found their way to Storm. But one could never be too careful, especially with the more precious members of the pack needing protection. ”Don’t worry, son. Most trouble-makers are smart enough not t’mess with a big pack like ours,” Phoenix reassured the boy. ”But we hafta make sure. It’s our duty to protect the people we love.” Protect, and teach. Phoenix loved passing on his knowledge to the younger generation, especially when they carried his name and/or blood.

It’s all right. Smile

_____ Kansas had the inkling that, if it ever did occur that one of Phoenix’s children was chosen to be the leader somewhere along the line, it would not be him. He didn’t have much of an understanding about what an alpha was, other than the boss of a pack; but while the “fame” it would have promised sounded nice, it was a big job. He didn’t see how his father did it, let alone how he could, if the opportunity ever arose. It seemed more suited to Firefly, somehow. At least he had concluded that she was stronger than him, thus more suited to “big jobs” like leading Storm. That is, if the role ever happened to fall to any of his siblings.

_____ He fully exited the confines of the den and stepped into the sunlight, squinting against the bright rays. His father’s words comforted him, as they always did. He wasn’t sure how much trouble was ordinarily given by intruders, but if Phoenix wasn’t worried about it, neither was Kansas. “I know. We gotta keep them safe, huh?” he responded, hoping he was right. The child gave a small smile and waited a little ways from the den for his father, his thrill building up again. “Where are we going to start?” This would give him not only the opportunity to spend time with his father, but to explore the areas of Storm he’d yet to see.

Phoenix was happy that Iskata gave his children a heritage and large clan out there, since it was something he himself couldn't provide for his children. The Phoenix clan wasn't much of a clan just yet--quite a fledgling concept, but the patriarch hoped that one day Storm (and perhaps even the rest of Bleeding Souls) would be filled with Phoenixes. Kansas was without a doubt a child of the Sadiras. Right now the massive male couldn't see much of himself in his son, but he had the pale tones and the blue eyes of Iskata's line. That was all right by Phoenix--if anything, Kansas (and Firefly) was the anchor that attached him to a larger family.

Long ago Phoenix had learned not to overestimate his abilities, yet within the confines of the pack he was confident that there was no single threat that he could not overcome. He had fought and shed blood for the pack and come out alive each time, because he was stronger than average and he had something he believed in and loved to defend. And, in the off chance that he did actually encounter a foe that was too much for him, help was merely a howl away. Phoenix doubted he would run into any trouble today, but in the unlikely event that someone did come in looking for trouble, Kansas would be sent away, not allowed to be put in harm's way. The purpose of this excursion was to bond with his son, not put him in danger.

Where to start, indeed. Storm's claims encompased a large area of land, and Phoenix could not cover it all himself. neither could his single Spaher, which was why he helped patrol the borders. "We'll start south a'here, move our way east," Phoenix answered as he took off in a slow trot towards the edge of Storm that was closest to where he loved. Back when he'd been a mere Subordinate he'd been happy to have a den deep within the heart of Storm; now as Alpha the location was a bit of an inconvenience. But this ws where his family now lived; there were too many memories preventing him from moving. "If you ever get tired, lemme know an' we can take a small break, okay?"

Sorry for the wait. And am I playing him all right? If you want me to change anything, just let me know. <3

_____ Kansas knew what fights were, and they frightened him more than most anything else. Even the little tussles he got into with his sister or other siblings were a bit intimidating, though he had always been a boy to become afraid more easily than most. He wanted himself to always be safe, and for his parents, brothers, and sisters to be so also – so the concept of fights was scary. But things like that were only floating in the back of his mind, undisturbed, for so far he had no reason to let them resurface. He was comfortable and safe now, and that was all that mattered.

_____ He had traveled only a bit away from the den on romps with his siblings, and so far, he hadn’t had the inspiration to leave the safety of Storm and explore the other territories of Bleeding Souls. The thought of doing so excited him, though he knew it wasn’t allowed yet. However, this little excursion was far more exciting, for it was permitted, and included his father. They could go forever in the boy’s mind, traveling to the unknown of Storm. He’d get acquainted with the place that would be his home for a long while.

_____ Phoenix let him know that they could rest, but Kansas felt he’d never get tired. Still, he wanted to please his father, thus the response, “Okay, papa.” He had the urge to run ahead, but he feared losing the chocolate male. Instead, he asked a question along the lines of what he’d been thinking about a few moments before. “Have you seen evwything here? All the places?” he wondered, of course not realizing that the question was vague.

Don’t worry—you’re doing him perfectly. Wink

Phoenix had been in enough situations to the point where a little scuffle didn’t frighten him. The alternative did though—because he only fought when someone he loved was in danger. Scars gotten from such battles were as badges of pride to Phoenix as well, since they were tokens of how far he was willing to go to preserve said loved ones’ lives. The thick, long scar running along his left foreleg was the result of a fight with someone who had threatened Moon’s life. Every time he looked at it he thought of his oldest son, and he thought of it with a sick sense of pride. He would do the same for Kansas, Icarus, or any of his daughters as well.

The male could understand the pup’s curiosity of the world outside what he had thus far been limited to. Phoenix was glad that they showed interest over complacency, since that was an obvious mark of intelligence. But at the same time it was also a part of growing up, and Phoenix did not want to lose his children too quickly. And he did not want them to wander into any danger, as he had done countless times (albeit involuntarily) as a youth. Soon enough they would be big enough to be trusted on their own outside the safety of the pack’s borders. For now, though, he did not want them too far away to be out of reach.

Phoenix was not sure if he understood his son’s question. Did he mean everything in Storm, in Bleeding Souls, or the whole world? The answers to each would be yes, no, and of course not. “I’ve seen everythin’ in Storm, if that’s what y’mean,” he answered. It would be pretty pathetic if he hadn’t, since he had lived here most of his life and he now ruled this domain. “But this valley we’re in, called Bleedin’ Souls, it’s a big place. I haven’t seen it all. An’ the whole world is huge, too big for any one wolf to see it all in his lifetime.” Such concepts might be hard to grasp for someone so young but the sooner they were introduced to it the sooner they would understand.

_____ He had thought that perhaps his father had truly been everywhere – all around the world and back. It wouldn’t have surprised Kansas; his father seemed the type who could do whatever he pleased, being so strong. But that wasn’t the only reason he thought Phoenix was well-traveled – he was stable and even; Kansas had never seen his father overly upset by anything. The boy sensed that this sort of thing could take you places. Kansas wanted to be like Phoenix, calm and gentle, big and strong, so that he might have an exciting life such as Kansas assumed was the one the alpha lead.

_____ He did move a few feet further ahead, having to take several steps for his father’s own four strides. It was so frustrating being small, and while this (for now) fit his personality, every child had the desire to do great things, and that was always associated with size. Growing took so much time! But he decided to move as quickly as possible, focusing on his time with his father and enjoying the scenery of Storm as they now entered an area he’d never seen.

_____Kansas awaited his father’s response excitedly, expecting to hear that he’d at least been everywhere, well, in the area around Storm. He realized that he didn’t yet know what those areas were, as a whole. There couldn’t just be a range of packs living near one another, without the entire place having a name. Luckily, Phoenix gave it to Kansas, and the boy repeated it softly under his breath. What a strange sort of name. It sounded sad, almost. But no matter – his father had just mentioned that he had not been all around the world, which, Kansas found, wasn't too worrisome. “Oh… Well, how big is, uh, Bleeding So’s?

The irony of the whole situation was that Phoenix had done nothing but travel during his childhood. He’s seen quite a few sights and learned many things about the world around him, but throughout the entire time he’d been too miserable to care. The excitement of his life had been totally unappreciated at the time, since said “excitement” was usually of the life-and-death variety. All he’d wanted was a stable home and a family. Here in Storm he was settled and happy, and would be content to spend the rest of his life here.

Even then there was more in the world that he hadn’t seen then what he had, but he still had plenty interesting tales to recount to youngsters. Sure, he could look back at those memories now and not feel as affected by them, but back then they had been no fun at all. Usually he told such tales to try to impress upon the next generation how lucky they truly were and how they needed to cherish their family. Kansas didn’t seem to take such things for granted, but that was no reason for Phoenix to withhold such stories from him. Sharing experiences was a good way for father and son to bond.

Normally Phoenix traversed the land and a much more rapid rate, but he slowed down so his son could keep up. It felt good to once again have a small form tagging along beside him. Sun and Moon had outgrown that long ago, and Dierdre hadn’t gotten to do it often with him since her home mad been on the other side of the valley. It was a long trek for a pup, and Phoenix had tried to appreciate the efforts she went through to see him each time. “It’s pretty big,” Phoenix answered vaguely. “Storm takes up only a small part of the valley, an’ there’s a lotta different parts t’see.” Indeed, Bleeding Souls had a wealth of diversity to enrich its inhabitants’ lives. “Mebbe someday we’ll go explorin’ some new place t’gether, eh? You, me, maybe your brother and sisters… How wouldja like that?”

_____ He hadn’t really noticed that the father was moving more slowly to accommodate his son – but Kansas did feel like he was stronger for being able to keep up, and even being able to traipse along a bit ahead of the chocolate male. It gave him a temporary sense of pride, and it would have disappointed him had he found out that his father really was just going less quickly than usual. However, he even felt a bit uncomfortable being up ahead, so he slowed down once again so that he was striding beside Phoenix. He didn’t know where they were going – he assumed his father had their excursion all planned out.

_____ Kansas looked up at his father with large eyes alight, hanging on to his every word. A few words tripped him up, but he made sure to let his father finish speaking before he began to ask questions. Another adventure, this time with his whole family? That sounded very exciting, and large smile lit up the small boy’s face. "Oh, that would be lotsa fun. Can… can Moon go, too?" He asked, hoping his idol brother would be able to join them. "And, papa? Wha’s a ‘valley’?" It was frustrating being in the dark about so many things, but that was what questions were for, right? He had a plethora of them; it was just a matter of awaiting the right time to ask.

Good news and bad news… Good news: I have net access back here at home, so no more time away. Bad news: I have the flu. So don’t expect much.

It had always worried Phoenix that the relationship with his adopted children would inevitably become strained, especially when Iskata had come into their lives and their children soon followed. It seemed to have come true with Sun. Though he doubted if feelings of rejection were what had driven her to seek go explore her biological heritage, he knew such feelings had simmered within her despite his efforts to reassure that his blood children changed nothing between him and his adopted children. Moon seemed to be more accepting of it and it pleased Phoenix to see the youngsters bonding with their older brother. “Course he can,” the father answered. Phoenix always got a kick out of the way Kansas seemed to admire the gray wolf.

Phoenix had an infinite amount a patience when it came to youngsters, particularly when they had questions. He himself could clearly remember the time when the world had been a confusing place, since that period had been longer for him than the norm. And so he enjoyed being an educator, filling in the gaps of knowledge for the children and giving them the advantages he himself had gone without. Besides, it made him proud to see his own children have such voracious appetites for knowledge and expanding their worlds. “A valley is an area that’s surrounded by mountains,” he explained. Oh yes, there were times when it felt strange to be the one answering questions than asking them, but it was just one more thing that reminded Phoenix that maybe, possibly, he was all grown up.

Aw, I'm sorry! Hope you feel better. Smile

_____ Kansas didn’t exactly know what the true relationship his father had with Sun and Moon was. To him, they were just siblings, albeit older ones – he didn’t recognize that they were not related to Phoenix. He had treated them like his own children, so the cream boy assumed they were true sister and brother. And what did the words “sister and brother” mean to him? They were those simply those who shared the same mother and father. He played with them and loved them. His older siblings met this criteria as far as he was concerned, save for Sun, who didn't seem to be around.

_____ He glanced up at his father as he spoke, nearly tripping over a root that was bared above the earth as he did so. He understood, except he didn’t yet know what exactly a mountain was, either. It was a bit intimidating to ask, since he was frustrated that he didn’t know these things, anyway – he put that question on hold for later, or perhaps for someone else. “Sos, Bleeding Sou’s is jus’ a big valley? A rilly big valley?” he asked softly. Someday, he would make it his mission to get the whole of his home mapped out in his head, so he’d always know where he was. Even now, he was showing signs of wanting to be aware of where he lived – he was paying close attention to the layout of Storm, though he’d probably forget later and have to explore again when he was a bit older.

Thanks. Fortunately it only turned out to be a 24-hour bug. Still wasn’t fun, but at least I got the internet back to brighten up my day.

The sight of his son off-kilter caused Phoenix to nearly stop in his tracks and flinch slightly, as he stood ready to try to catch his son if he actually did go down. The patriarch new he could at times be overprotective but he didn’t want to see his children get hurt. He knew he would have to let them leave the nest someday or else they wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves as adults, but Phoenix wanted to hold on to his children for as long as he could. “Right,” he answered, obviously pleased that Kansas was starting to piece everything together in his mind. “You’re a very smart boy, y’know. It makes me proud t’see you learnin’ so fast.”

They walked on as the day came to full realization. The sun finally cleared the horizon as it began its daily trek across the sky, and the lands seemed to come alive with it. The few birds that had not fled the approach of winter began to sing, the shadows began to retreat more quickly. Phoenix loved witnessing the dawn of a new day. He was all about fresh starts, especially considering his namesake. Since there seemed to be no imminent threat to their borders and Phoenix was in such a good mood, he began to hum. After a few bars though he grew bored with it and began singing the words. His children were intimately familiar with his voice, as he sang them to sleep every night since they’d been born. But this particular song he hadn’t sung in a while.
“Mighty friend that is mine, can you give me a sign?

He'll leave nothing but only to hear him

I've seen the tall trees bend low when his mighty winds blow

And that's all the more reason I fear him

Hear him call for the earth lonely I can feel his great pain

But on the eve of this day

I'll join in his refrain

Cry for me, sigh for me, sad breezes flow

Stay for me, play for me, the song my friends will know

My lonely wind must blow.”

That's always good. Tongue

_____ He hoped he hadn’t worried his father too much – it was simply a small trip, but he’d righted himself and Phoenix seemed to see this. He was comforted by his father’s concern. Many children may have found it annoying, but Kansas liked it. It showed him that someone cared about him – of course, he believed he was greatly loved. But seeing this in action made him feel very good about his family, especially someone he so looked up to like Phoenix. The boy smiled and jumped upward, perhaps seemingly at random - but he'd simply felt a sudden surge of joy toward his father's compassion.

_____ He laughed a little at his father’s compliment, not out of modesty, but rather pleasure at having been told he was smart. Even now, the shy boy sometimes got down on himself for feeling naive and stupid. But Phoenix didn’t seem to think so, and that gave Kansas a bit more faith in himself. “Thanks, papa.” He was silent for short while, noticing how the morning light dappled the earth below them. He loved the birdsong; it was one of those things he always had appreciated, and always would. But more music of a different kind began to drift toward him, first a soft hum, then a song whose tune he recognized from a while back at bedtime. “Oh, sing more - that song is... pwetty.

The father returned his son’s smile, glad that he was all right. Kansas seemed to enjoy the same attention which would probably have annoyed Icarus or Firefly. Of course, though two were in a hurry to grow up. Kansas—and Ember—weren’t above being their parents’ children. These two were most likely to stay with their parents in Storm, while Phoenix had a feeling Icarus and Firefly would end up moving on outside the pack when they grew up. Phoenix didn’t like the idea, but he wouldn’t be surprised if it came true. He just hoped that their independent tendencies didn’t cause them to roam too far away from him. Even if they wanted to settle down in another pack Phoenix still wanted to be in his chidlrens’ lives. Already he had one adult daughter that was too far out of reach and it broke his heart.

Modesty was something that Phoenix and his son had in common. Before Iskata came into his life the massive wolf had been far too hard on himself, constantly second-guessing and doubting his competence. Even now he was still prone to those tendencies, but he had more faith in himself than ever before. With enough encouragement from his parents (something that Phoenix never had for himself) Kansas would eventually grow out of it. “Y’like that, eh?” he asked, obviously pleased. “My papa taught it t’me. Someday I’ll teach you how t’sing it, if y’want.” The patriarch hoped to pass on everything advantageous he could to his children… including his love of music.

“When I'm needin' a friend I'll remember the wind

And my life here with the breezes of sorrow

I'll be leaving him soon 'cause I've got to make room

For the lonely that will find him tomorrow

On a black stormy night in your bosom I'll cling

And I'll know I've found love and the last song we'll sing

Cry for me, sigh for me, sad breezes flow

Stay for me, play for me, the song my friends will know

My lonely wind, my lonely wind, my lonely wind must
blow.”

Do ya want to wrap this up soon? We don’t have to or anything, just checking in and stuff.

_____ His brother and twin did seem to be a bit wayward. He and Ember were the more relaxed of the four, but Kansas certainly accepted all of his littermates. Sure, Icarus and Firefly could be troublesome at times, but he loved them for that. He admired their curiosity and spunk, the way they were keen to try new things. In a sense, he was even envious. But his slightly more-advanced cautiousness would always deter him for doing extreme things on his own – although, he was planning on leaving the safety of Storm someday soon, just to see what lay beyond its borders. However, he wouldn’t ever be able to come up with more colossal things to try out; he would just do the things Firefly persuaded him to do - which really didn't seem too hard for her.

_____ He loved his pack and his family dearly, and didn’t have any plans to strike out on his own. That wasn’t to say Kansas had his whole life planned out at such an early age – but he knew that now he was comfortable with where he was. His father was right in that regard. The boy slowed down and, as his father sang, let his eyes wander over the autumn leaves, fantasies of finding a villain hidden in the brush playing through his mind as did the music. He looked up at Phoenix when he’d finished the song, still grinning from ear to ear. “Yeah, teach me! Someday, I wanna know how t’do all the stuffs you can, Papa,” he said in a his mystified child’s voice.
