for Katie, Arachnea's Revenge

The forest was heavily populated by trees, their thick green leaves blocking out the sun, shrouding the forest in darkness. Pale moss dripping down like faceless beards, the thick branches reaching out with wooden fingers, beckoning Grimsley to come closer. Spiders were everywhere, they're tiny feet moving soundlessly over the leaves and grasses, hardly visible, only seen by those who are looking. Grimsley is looking, his bright eyes taking in everything he passes, soaking in the beauty of the landscape, beauty only recognized by the right eyes.

It is only when he has walked so far that his horse companion becomes reluctant that he discovers the true beauty of the woods. At first, he is certain that his eyes have deceived him, the perfect body of water almost too blue to be real. His horse, sensing something to cure its parched throat hurries toward the water and in no time the glass-like lake is shattered, the horse's thirsty gulps causing ripples through what is otherwise unmoving. Grimsley, having shed his leather bag beside his drinking companion, began to wade into the water, keeping very aware of his surroundings, though for now it appears he is the only one to have located paradise.

Hanna, too, had discovered the idyllic spot, and had determined that today she would take a bath. Normally a quick grooming would suffice, but from time to time it felt good to get really clean. So the female had backtracked to find a bar of soap in one of the stores in Wolfville, within the borders of Dahlia de Mai near to where her niece had made her den and where her temporary home was. The label on the box proclaimed the scent to be 'Mountain Spring' and it smelled beautiful to the femme. The fragrance was far from harsh, so light and airy that Hanna thought perhaps it wouldn't be detectable on her fur.

She waded into the water, her own satchel, knives, belt, and the soap left on dry land, and dove beneath the surface, a steady stream of air issuing from her nostrils. She emerged and went back for the soap; making suds, she worked it through her thick black fur to her skin, chucked the bar back to the ground and went back to the water to cleanse the soap from her body.

Only upon her reemergence did Hanna notice the company she had, and probably had had since coming to the little lake, wading into the blue waters. For a moment she chided herself for not paying more attention to her surroundings, but he didn't appear aggressive. Hanna swam toward him lazily with a modified breaststroke, stopping some fifteen feet from him to tread water. "Hello. Nice day, isn't it?" She realized after the words came from her mouth that they were a little redundant, considering if it were not a nice day, the pair of them would likely not be where they were.

To cover her momentary idiocy, Hanna went on fairly quickly, "Been here long?" Okay, so that wasn't much better, but she was trying.

Grimsley was so wrapped up in his newly discovered slice of heaven that he had neglected to stay alert and notice the company he had. Perhaps it had been foolish of him to think his spot was such a fine catch, certainly a place like this was not unheard of in these parts. Still, company was always welcome and he was glad to see his companion was a friendly sort, for she had already initiated conversation.

"Hey," he said coolly, watching her approach in a casual breaststroke, immediately surveying her. She appeared to be a bit older than he, though not by too much, and judging by her friendly chatter, was not a threat. Offering her a smile, Grims proceeded to answer her questions, "It is a very nice day, I've only been here a short while, this water offers a beautiful release from the summer heat, wouldn't you say?" He winked at her before disappearing beneath the surface for a few brief moments. Suspended under the water, Grimsley felt as if time were slowed. His own heartbeat pounded in his ears, and all troubles seemed to drift away, until suddenly he broke the surface and life came rushing back at him.

"I'm Grimsley by the way, and you are?" Introductions were always good.

"I'm Hanna. Pleased to meet you, Grimsley. The lake certainly is refreshing." She had looked momentarily concerned as he dipped beneath the water, unsure of his intent. That look passed as soon as Grimsley's coyote-esque ears reemerged above the glassy surface. She was once again a smiling figure treading water.

Upon answering, Hanna flipped over and floated on her back for a few minutes, paddling with her arms and kicking lightly, moving her way in a looping circle. Hanna sighed happily. "Ahhh, I could absolutely spend days like this. Except I'd come out fluffy as a pine tree." With that, she turned and paddled to shore sitting on the bank near Grim's belongings. Her saturated fur hung in clumps looking quite unbecoming but Hanna knew it would soon dry out in the warm autumn sun.

She leaned back on her hands, still dripping water, and gazed around, her eyes falling finally on Grimsley. He was shorter than most wolven men she encountered with signature coyote ears. His pelt ran to red-browns and cream and white, a beautiful combination in Hanna's eyes, and one she'd not seen very often.
