A faint smile came to his face briefly, but he wasn’t entirely sure of the concept of whether or not he was ‘a good kid’. He had heard such a thing being said to him before, but had hardly been given reason to justify it in a way that made sense. But it had never had much to do with who had said it and what validity it had as it did who he had always wanted to hear it from. In this case, he knew that Gabriel was trying to cheer him up and because of that, he didn’t seem so foreboding as Hezekiah would have liked to believe.

However, what the Aquila said next seemed to almost play into what Hezekiah usually had on his mind. He did stay out of the way—the way essentially being trouble in any form—and since then had done well on his own. He could fend for himself, but was otherwise lack in set skills like those in Inferni had. They were all providers and protectors; creatures build for strength that had long been ingrained in them. He was gangly and meek, no doubt in need of a sure footing to build his confidence.

But he was willing to learn.

“I don’t know what I’m good at,” Hezekiah said, feeling little shame in admitting what was a truth. He certainly wasn’t much of a fighter by looks alone. “Most of what I know now is because I figured out how to do it myself, or because I watched someone. It’s how I learned to put the skulls on the sticks.” But Anselm hadn’t been too appreciative of his shadowing. Yet it was something that Hezekiah had continued to do now that he had seen it.

In Character

There had been others, like Hezeikah, who had come to Inferni with nothing. And they had all grown strong, most leaving, but capable of handling themselves. Gabriel felt no ill towards them, though he might have once had such a place in his heart, because as long as coyotes survived and remembered who had given them that ability, Inferni’s place was made. They had long been established, but whether or not the name of the clan was carried on the wind was beyond him. Certainly, it must have been. Coyotes had, after all, come asking for it by name.

Hezekiah, like the others, was a blank slate. He was young and had no need to find purpose beyond his basic survival skills. Until now. “Most people learn from watching others,” he explained, having done the same himself. Watching, then doing. Everything came down to experience and education, in the long run. Gradually, an idea came to the Aquila, and his eyes darkened as they focused on his younger companion. “If you’re quiet,” he began, speaking slowly as if the thoughts were still forming. “And fast, we have a need for eyes and ears.” For spies—for information that muscles and brute strength could not gain.

Observance was definitely a skill that they all had, there wouldn’t be any argument there. Some weren’t necessarily as well-rounded as others and it seemed in that world, they didn’t last long if that were the case. Some of them just scraped by, which was where Hezekiah often put himself though it wasn’t the case. Observation was something that he could have easily prided himself on and with an encroaching offer formulating on the horizon, it seemed like he would have a reason to discover that. His gaze met Gabriel’s for a moment, seeing that resolution settle like sediment at the bottom of a lake left alone. And then that solution was placed right in front of him.

While he was able to draw what it was that Gabriel was suggesting, Hezekiah did not assume. Instead, he asked for clarification. “What for?” Those looks could have been purely for show, something to reel him in the way a storyteller did (although truthfully Gabriel would have been quite a scary storyteller), but in all seriousness, whatever it was, Hezekiah found himself willing to do it. It didn’t matter whether or not his existence within Inferni was hanging by a thread or not because right then and there in his head it was.

The sepia toned coyote, with those peculiar blue eyes, seemed to understand what the meaning was behind Gabriel’s suggestion. Hezekiah was smart, and because he was so young, he would be a fast learner. He would adapt and thrive, or he would whither and fall to the wayside. There were only so many options for those who ran under Inferni’s colors.

Gabriel’s eyes, dark as they were, focused hawk-like on the boy. “Inferni is not without enemies,” he warned, and the warning was not in vain. How many had they lost? Far too many. “Information keeps us alive. It keeps us one step ahead of them.” It was always us versus them, and always had been. Despite the fact it was obvious Gabriel was no coyote (here, next to the boy, he was a hulking brute) he wore his mother’s crest and battle scars with pride. He was no wolf either. “Do you understand?”
