dancing on the killing floor

The sun shown brightly as it rose, Emma resting at the mouth of a cave she was forced to sleep in. She did not get much rest that night, even with Godelieve at her side and Hemming telling her it was all right. She was two months old and worrying more than she should, trying to figure out the best way to get to her father. Her mind, as young as it was, could only go so far so she went in circle with her thoughts and never came to an ending that was good enough but instead a bunch of dead ends that frustrated her. Emma thought Zaramama was going to take them all the way to their father but they were stopped short when his scent out there was diminishing and she was running out of time to track him.

Her head rested against her paws as she looked at the surrounding, taking in the sight of her home (which she deemed temporary until she could figure out what to do). None of it meant anything to her and she did not commit anything to memory for the moment. Her head turned to look at Godelieve, asleep in the corner, and Hemming resting himself in the back. Carefully, and doing her best to stay silent, she picked herself up and left the mouth of the cave. At two months, she should be happy in her den with her mother and unable to go too far without permission. Instead, she was forced to survive on her own and do her best to put her life back together when her mind could barely comprehend everything going on. Her nose was in the air and on the ground at different times, unable to find the scent that belonged to her father or her brother.

Not a few yards away from the cave, the girl collapsed tiredly on the ground, face between her paws and whimpered. She was tired, unable to eat because of the stress, and now she could not think of anything else other than the idea that she might never see her family again.

Woop woop.

Hemming did not sleep that much, either. He had been kept awake by the tiny nudgings of the puppies that had somehow ended up in his den. The wolf knew how they got there, of course, but why? He had been partially convinced that Ember would take them, since he had assumed that she had more maternal instinct than did he. Somehow, though, she had left him with the two new puppies slung over his shoulders, and he couldn't possibly just leave them outside. The part of him that cradled birds and small injured animals emerged and he kept the two children close to his body during the cold night to keep them warm. Surely it was the strangest feeling to be passed from stranger to stranger, while the parents they knew were out there somewhere. Hemming still did not know their story, but he was sure it was a sad one.

After getting a few brief moments of sleep he was woken by the feeling of knowing something was absent. Amber eyes cracking open, he accounted for only one of the puppies, Godelieve. Emma had left the cave without the male noticing, and this frightened him a little. She seemed crafty, but the pups were likely too exhausted to get too far. Removing himself carefully from around the pup remaining in the cave, he crawled outside. The blue eyed female was nearby, fortunately, and Hemming moved quietly and kneeled in front of her. "Emma, where are you going?" He asked gently, not wanting to startle her.

With the morning rising, the sun warmed up her back. It was still cold, however, and her body began to shiver. Emma longed for the warmth of her parents and four siblings that kept them all warm. She even longed for the distant memory of her grandparents in a land she could not recall. She knew they were there, however, but she just wanted someone she knew to be with her. Her blue eyes welled up with tears as Hemming approached and she rested her face against the frosted ground as the dew kissed grass froze the underside of her body.

His voice startled her and she jerked, slowly picking her head as her body gave a long shiver. She pushed herself closer slightly but did not make it very far. "I wanna my papa," she cried through tears and puppy slurs, a lack of communication was now hurt by her sadness. She did not have a wide vocabulary to explain everything someone needed to know but she knew how to get across that she wanted her mom and dad. Her eyes fell away from Hemming and she stared at the ground as tears wet her cheeks, freezing the skin beneath and her shivers continued.

Now that she was in this pack, she felt confined and unable to get away to find Beppe and the rest of her family. She knew nothing of her mother's fate or her other two siblings and had no answers for the questions she might get. "Help find papa?" she begged, slowly rotating her head to look at her new caretaker. The last thing Emma wanted was to be passed around from one to the other without any advance on finding her family.

@__@ sorry for the delay, and sorry if this is bad. two and a half hours of sleep last night and i feel like a note-taking zombie

The wolf had no experience with puppies, and had no clue what forms their development took or even what they should be able to do at certain ages. It was becoming obvious to him that these two girls were capable of a fair amount, especially since they had made it so far without the help of the kind coyote that had brought them here, but there was also many things that they were incapable of. Hemming did not really pick up on this, attributing the communication problems between the adult and the children to his inability to understand the nuances of puppy emotion and speech. Having never truly known a family, he was emotionally unaware of the feelings that bound the girls to their father. The male could recognize these feelings, and though he could not make them his own he understood how much they must affect the two lost puppies.

He winced a bit as she started, feeling bad for surprising the girl. The air was nippy out here and the rabbit blankets he and Ember had made so warm and comfortable. The sentence that escaped Emma's mouth was not perfect but it got the point across, stinging his heart with its imperfect poignancy. He lowered himself to his stomach so he was at the girl's level, propped up on his elbows. Hemming had no clue how to go about finding someone's lost family, but the state of the girl made him want to try. He knew he couldn't promise anything, and replied carefully, "I'll try."
They couldn't really go anywhere without Godelieve, and she was in a pleasant sleep, likely a rare thing, and the male didn't want to wake her up. He didn't know what to do with Emma, though, had no clue what pups liked to do. This made him feel guilty, and his ears folded back a little as he looked at the pup. Unable to come up with anything, he asked quietly, "Did you sleep well?"

I'm sorry... I thought I replied to this. :/

I'll try. Her ears shot back lightly and tried to decide whether or not that was good enough. She had to take it, however, because he didn't say anything else about it. Instead, he moved on and asked how she slept. Her eyes looked away and she shuffled her feet into a sitting position. "Sleep is buono," she said, mixing English and Italian without realizing it. She was only learning both languages before her world was torn apart and she didn't know much of either. Without either parent around, she would be stuck in whatever language was around her and she didn't hear any accents that resembled either parent.

Emma wanted to ask if they could try and find her father then but he didn't seem like he wanted and, hurt, she looked away and stared at her paws. It was the only thing she wanted to do, wanted to talk about, but she didn't feel in place here. This was not her family, even with her sister here, and when she was old enough she determined that she would pick herself up and just leave to find them on her own.

Sorry for the delay D:

Hemming felt useless and guilty, and as the pup stared at her paws he looked, helpless, to the horizon. The wolf knew the word that she spoke now, but it wasn't just from reading old operas - he had no clue of their pronunciation, anyway - but also that he had spoken to an Italian wolf many months ago. She had taught him a little of the language, but he didn't remember much of it. There was a chance that the girl would find his absolute lack of proficiency amusing, but also a chance she would find it insulting and useless. Given that he didn't want to propel her any further into the misery that was being without some of her family, he wouldn't risk it.

He was unsure, then, what he should do. A thought came to him almost within an instant after he had discarded his plan to attempt the girl's language (or, at least, one of them). Perhaps it would help to play the detective. Hemming realized that he knew very little of these pups' story, and with a little knowledge he could be more helpful when they finally did set out to find her papa. "Emma, you followed your papa's scent here? How far have you come?" He hoped the slight interrogation wouldn't be upsetting, and peered at the girl with soft eyes.
