atlantis is my only dream tonight

It was getting rather late in the day. The wind was picking up as the sun was disappearing and the temperature was dropping dramatically for when night fell. The temperature was cooling the young girl's body, refusing to leave the mouth of the cave for the time being so she could keep an eye out for what was to come. She imagined her father and the rest of her family to come and sweep her up and take her home but as the day was finishing, the hope of that was diminishing and her depression was setting in rather easily. As the wind blew across her light colored face, she sighed and looked through the trees as the ray of light shot from the ground, the sky a beautiful red, purple, and orange that normally she would find a sight she would never trade.

Emma did not want the day to end when she could still be looking or that possible Beppe was looking for her. There was too much to do and so little time to actually do it. She picked her head to look in the den for her sister that lay in the background and she noticed Hemming had left her a piece of jerky nearby without her even noticing. Her nose was well skilled at such a young age but her mind had been elsewhere. Her weight shuffled slightly so she could dip her head and scoop the piece up with her mouth. It was a rather large one and she silently wondered how much Zaramama had left the girls and felt suspicious that Hemming was stealing some for himself and giving it to the rest of the pack. One day she determined she would figure out how to make such a treat for herself and not share it with anyone.

A bit of contentment settled inside her and her worry subsided for the time being as she let her puppy teeth chew against the tough meet. It tasted different than milk and other chewed up meat she had before. It was harder to chew, like a bone, but still more tender than that. Emma pulled her head back to slice a piece of the dried deer meat, pulling loose strings that looked like thread and awkwardly chewed the piece in the side of her mouth in peace.

Night was beginning to fall, but that didn't mean that Ember was anywhere near going into her den and settling down for sleep. There was not anything troubling her in particular, at least, nothing that she could think of...but her feet felt like they needed a good walk. She had been a bit lax in her practice with her blade Lightning as of late, choosing to hunt with Hemming for extra meat or helping him with skinning rabbits to make warm blankets out of instead; perhaps this was the reason why her feet felt like walking tonight.

Bayard was asleep in his stall in the stables, and she heard the light whinnying of one of the foals as she passed the skeletal structure in the darkness. She walked for a little ways before her feet began to bother her and she broke into a run to cure the itch. Her breath came in and out heavily and in deep gulps by the time she reached the silver wolf's den and she slowed to a walk as she approached. How did the pups like the rabbit pelts that they had stitched together? Did the thread hold up alright? She had a few questions for him.

As she neared, however, she noticed something just outside of the reach of the den's darkness--a little figure. One of the lost puppies. "Hey there...'You'" She panted. She couldn't remember this one's name, if it had ever been told to her. "Not in bed yet? I guess it ain't late enough...I was just wonderin' about how the rabbit pelts were, if they were stayin' together and working out fer you guys."

Emma was content in her position. The tough chewing and the sun disappearing was beginning to cause the girl a tiredness. She did not want the day to end when she could be searching for her father but she knew it would come in time. It would be there sooner than she anticipation and surely she would fall asleep in the position she was in and wake up next to Hemming after being magically moved from her current spot and then away. Her chewing began to lessen and her eyes closed but they jerked to attention when she was spoken to and her blue eyes caught sight of Ember, the strange woman that had let them stay.

"Y-Y-Yes," she stuttered uncomfortably and felt terribly put on the spot. Her head turned to look at the pelts Godelieve was laying on and using for her own comfort when Emma was out on the cold concrete floor. It did not really bother her but a little bit of jealousy was fueling inside her that Godelieve was getting something she missed out on and she could not see the rational side that she chose against it. Her tendering piece of deer meat was temporarily forgotten with her new company but it was not a complete loss. At two months she was not a social wizard and did not say anything else other than her awkward answer.

She had, of course, meant for the pelts to be used for both of the children. Ember was levelheaded and she and Hemming had stitched and stitched to be able to make the pelts into a blanket big enough for both of the girls. Emma was still awake, sitting out at the entrance, but she didn't see Godelieve anywhere. The other pup was probably inside doing something or sleeping. Pups slept a lot, didn't they?

The wolf was about to say something else when she heard a sound off in the distance, a frightened sort of whinny from the direction of the horse barn. One of the mares was pregnant and was due to have her foal in a couple of days...was that what all of the disrest had been about earlier? She might have gotten the other horses nervous with her sounds and movements. "You gonna stay up a bit longer? I got something I gotta go do...but it might be interesting to watch"

For an adult, perhaps, but Ember didn't think about that. She didn't really know how to baby something, how to treat a pup like a pup. This was something that was probably not the best for a pup to see or experience, even. But she needed to go and tend to the horse, make sure that the birth went well. "I've got some fresh meat stored in the barn next to the stables, where I'm heading, too" She commented.

At first, Emma was not all that interested in what Ember had to do despite she called it interesting. She was going to brush it off and perhaps turn around and rest the night away even if she didn't get very much sleep. However, the sound of fresh meat made her perk up a little and she was always in the mood for something to eat. She was a growing young girl and while meat was not easy to chew without someone else chewing it first, she still loved the taste no less. Emma and her siblings had barely gotten off milk before her family was torn apart and she was left to fend for herself.

"I wanna go," she said with an accent that was mixed, somewhere between Italian (which was stronger) and French. The young girl was eager to learn, especially in the tongue of her parents (and she had gotten a little farther with her father) and she bowed that if she ever found them again, she would learn everything she could and spend ever moment possible. "Ho-how fahr issit?" she asked with a tilt of her head, slowing pushing her tired body to their paws. Her ears stood high on her head to listen for her surroundings as the sun disappeared, not entirely wanting to go in the dark. Emma rushed forward a little to stand near the woman for now.

She had quite a few hiding places for meat, all around Aniwaya. If anyone ever found one of them and took the meat, then she would look in the next spot for some. Maybe she was some kind of paranoid...but really, she thought it was the best idea. Then if she ever needed it there would be meat available to her without her having to walk a really long distance to get to it. Emergency-meat.

"Okay. It's not too far." The slim werewolf turned in that direction, motioning for the young one to follow her. She said nothing as they traveled through the night, looking backward occasionally to be sure that the pup was still there. Ember was a darkly colored wolf, her pelt a mixture of browns and deep blacks, and she blended in well with the night. She didn't want Emma getting lost because of her.

A slight fog had settled over this area of Aniwaya and she smiled when she finally saw the horse barn looming up out of it, ahead in their path. She approached it and assessed the situation all at once. Her pregnant mare was in labor! She turned to the younger wolf. "I'll help you find the meat now...it's right over here. You can have something to chew on while we talk..I'm not sure how long this'll take." She opened the door to the barn, reaching up into the darkness above. She could feel the packages of dried meat right there where she had left them. Perfect! She took one down, then headed for the stables next. "One of the horses is giving birth" She explained.
