Jontae had been staying with the dappled blind girl. It had taken her a few days to finally figure out what was wrong with the lady but when she had it didn't really matter. Ruri was just as mobile as any of the other adults in the pack. Often Firefly would appear to and make things more interesting. Jontae liked her fierce attitude and way with words but Ruri was just as grounded and gentle as Firefly was flighty and spirited. The small princess wasn't sure which was her favorite but they made the fact that her mother was still missing a bit easier to get along with.

The small chocolate walnut hued mutt had scurried out of the house that morning when Ruri was still asleep and had been playing about on the porch, watching the rain alternating between flurries and back to the freezing cold water that pattered down upon the world. She didn't like the chill of the wind that danced over the ocean and blew at their door but she wasn't stupid enough to think she could change the way the winds blew, but she was bored and she didn't know if she really wanted to leave the porch to find something to keep her entertained.

Might we be able to date this on the 24th of October? That way Ruri won't be injured and she can play with Jontae ^_^. My post is horrid, but I can change it if you do not wish to pre-date it...or whatever

A yawn escaped the mouth of the ivory and merle female as she slowly rose from her slumber. Life had been interesting lately, both in good and bad ways. Svara Thames was dead, and Ruri often found herself shedding tears of grief for the gruff healer. Ruri hadn't even known that the woman had returned before finding out that she had killed herself. The border collie's innocent mind could not grasp what would make someone want to kill themself, but she could only imagine that immense grief had something to do with it. On a happier note, Jac's daughter, Jontae had been dropped off by Seraphine one of the old crew members and now Ruri and Firefly were sharing the responsibility of caring for the small fuzz ball. Firefly did most of the difficult stuff, like providing food for the pup, but Ruri somehow managed to play with the little creature. Surprisingly, wrestling with a pup wasn't that hard for a blind girl. As long as the pup kept trying to jump all over her, Ruri's acute sense of touch could always tell exactly where she was.

Now that she was awake, it was time to find the little rascal. No doubt she was somewhere nearby trying to cause some sort of mischief. Ruri had to make sure she kept her clothes and good blankets hidden well out of Jontae's reach when she wasn't using them otherwise the easily bored pup might attempt to destroy them for fun. "Jontae! Come inside sweetheart. It's too cold and wet outside to be playing out there." she called, immediately pinpointing the pups location through the fact that the front door was open and Jontae's distinct scent wafted in with each gust of the chilly, moist wind. Ruri was already shifted into her lupus form, having slept in it the night before. This form seemed best for when it came to caring for the pup, although Ruri was not sure why.

Jontae had hoped that Firefly would appear that day and play with her and Ruri but it seemed that the silvery gold woman wasn't going to, at least not anytime soon. She was just about to jump into a nice puddle that had been forming beside the porch when the soft voice of her caretaker hit her ears. The tiny princess flicked her floppy frizzy ears back and jutted out her bottom lip as she tried her best to ignore Ruri.

Now Jontae knew that that was a naughty thing to do but Ruri was right and it was too cold and wet outside to play, but she was a puppy and really wanted to just go have fun and be herself, whoever that might be. She took another step towards the end of the porch and finally sighed and called back to the merle guardian. "But why.." she whined before adding. "And don't tell me 'cause I'm too little.." she really hated when everyone said she couldn't do things because of her age or size. She was plain and simply a spoiled brat.

That little brat sat balanced on the edge of the porch and peered back towards the open door, wondering if Ruri would dare the cold to come out and try and corral her.

"Because if you get too cold and wet you could get sick. There's plenty of stuff for you to do inside," she replied, padding out onto the front porch to make sure the pup obeyed her. She was the adult after all, and while she did not like to punish the pup, she would get firm if Jontae decided to disobey her. She wasn't at all experienced with raising a pup, but fortunately some of the aspects of parenting seemed to come naturally to the blind girl. Perhaps it was the fact that she was used to constantly looking out for Jac, who wasn't much more than a big pup in his own right.

A gust of wind blew in through the door, causing the small fire in the fireplace to flicker. Fortunately it did not go out. However, the cold air immediately cut through the slender border collie's fur sending it's chill directly to her core. However, she remained at the doorway. Surely Jontae was just as cold, if not colder than Ruri was at the moment. After all, if the pup took after her father her fur was likely not as thick as the wolves who lived in this cold land. That and her small size should have meant that she was more susceptible to the cold. Why then had she sought to go outside and play on the porch in this weather? Ruri could not even begin to guess. She knew, however, that pups were interesting in their little fancies. Ruri had been the same way, wanting to try out anything Jac would let her try just to see what it was like. However, now that Ruri had grown up quite a bit, these odd puppish desires were not as fresh in her mind as they had once been, leaving her slightly puzzled. Hopefully Jontae would just come inside so that they could get on with the morning.

Jontae sat and silently mocked the words that came from Ruri's maw. She'd heard them over and over again and she knew them by heart now, she just expected the woman to change the story once or twice but it never happened. Rolling her eyes at her caretaker she sighed and glared out over the frosty world before her before taking one step off the porch and making certain that she left a nice perfect puppy sized pawprint in the bitter frost on the front step before giving in and trotting mournfully back to where Ruri stood.

"Oh yeah, like what?" the spoiled puppy asked, wanting to know what Ruri could find that was far better than playing out in the frozen yard and leaving nifty little prints all over the crisp white blanket of frost. She stood before Ruri but didn't enter the house just yet, waiting for this answer that would be perfectly logical with no room for arguing. It happened everytime but that didn't stop Jontae from asking, wondering what new game Ruri could come up with.

I hope you don't mind the little game I thought up. It's basically just an advanced version of the 'Find it' game that people teach their dogs. It made sense that Jac might have gotten a little weary of a constant follower after awhile and would have had to think up some sort of thing to keep Ruri occupied while he went out to have his fun with the ladies. With regards to the kinds of food, I figured that most, non-chocolate hard candies would be okay for canine's to consume which is why I threw that in there along with the meat. Anyway, this could get a little interesting.

Ruri frowned slightly when Jontae did not obey her immediately like she had asked. She would not scold the pup, for that would require catching her, which Ruri could not do very well without her sight. After all, if Jontae was anything like her father, scolding would only prolong the inevitable. So, the delicate lupus stood and waited for Jontae to come inside, only to hear the pup's characteristic questioning voice. Did their really always have to be a reason to do anything? Still, she couldn't help but smile at Jontae's curiosity. She had actually thought up the new game the night before. "Well, all sorts of stuff. We can play hide and seek, we could wrestle a little bit, or..." Ruri paused for dramatic effect. This last game was sure to peak the pup's interest. They had never played it before. "We could play treasure hunt!" she replied, shutting the door behind them after Jontae came inside. Treasure hunt was a game Jac had used to keep Ruri occupied as a pup. Despite being blind, Ruri was descended from dedicated livestock herders who had very active dispositions and active minds to match. Ruri had absolutely hated being bored as a pup, and when Jac had grown weary of her following him around for every second of the day he would make her play a game of treasure hunt to keep herself occupied while he stepped away for awhile to get a breather. The game could last for hours, and still be fun, if set up well. This house was quite a bit larger than sleeping quarters on the ship where Ruri had used to play. There would be plenty of hiding spots for the little treasures that Ruri spoke of.

One might wonder how a blind dog could hunt for any sort of treasure without being able to see it. It's quite simple, actually. When the treasure can be smelled, and tasted, as well as seen, the game can be played by any pup with a half-way decent sense of smell. Jac had used to hide whatever small food items he could scrounge up, whether they were small pieces of chewy dried meat or even the occasional hard-candy, Ruri had spent many an hour sniffing out her treasures. With Jontae's adventurous spirit, playing this game would be easy. Granted it would take awhile for Ruri to find hiding spots that would be hard, as she would have to avoid hiding places where the item might be in plain sight of a non-blind luperci. However, if Jontae was interested in the game, the difficulty would be well worth it.
