The hybrid was again disconcerted by the girl's simple answers, offering nothing other than what Kaena asked. The coyote woman continued to steal glances at the smaller canine now and again, fire-gold eye sizing up the silver-gold female with her single eye. They were drawing quite close to the caves now, and the hybrid woman picked up the pace ever so slightly, stepping faster toward the coast. "No, you've come a long way, I will make sure you are fed. Do you know how to fish?" the hybrid asked, the proverb about catching a man a fish and teaching him how to fish flashing through her head.

The rocky outline of the caves came into view, the blue coast expanding behind it. "These are our caves. A lot of Inferni lives here, but you'll stay with me," the hybrid added. "I'll take you to my home after we eat," the hybrid said. She stepped gingerly between the rocks, heading closer to the water's edge. It was low tide, and the hybrid was pleased to see that. It would surely make fishing a hell of a lot easier for them; when fish got trapped in lower tide pools it was always easier than trying to fish them out of the deeper waters of the inlet.

Vieira could not tell she was aggravating the woman without silence. Astaroth had taught her to refrain from speaking when it was not necessary. Sivaro nearly took her voice away, and Eris was neglectful. It was a natural reaction to remain silent. If asked to speak more, she might explode. "I have never fished before," she responded and felt inadequate. It was easier to kill prey on land back home and she had never been given the chance.

When they arrived at the caves, Vieira looked around and took note of the location. Kaena was on her way back down to the coast and she stumbled a little, but redirected and followed behind the woman. Her eyes looked over the ocean. It looked different than anything she had seen before. Eterne had been near an ocean but she was not allowed to go there. She was never allowed to go far from Astaroth on her own. For a moment, Vieira found herself planted on the rocks as Kaena moved downward as she soaked in the scene. Finally, she shook herself from her daze and followed down the rocky path to the water. "I have never seen the ocean before," she murmured automatically before realizing she had spoken without being spoken to or without permission. Her ears fell back against her head and she glanced away, hoping it would go unnoticed.

The coyote woman nodded at the younger canine's admission. It didn't surprise her—fishing was generally a learned skill, and fish were not usually among the type of prey canines consumed often. Kaena was an anomaly in that she rather enjoyed the taste of fish flesh, despite its rubbery texture and sharp, spiny bones. The hybrid did suppose it was an acquired taste, but she didn't think Viei would care. The tawny-furred canine looked rather hungry, well beyond the point of refusing edible food if it was offered, though Kaena didn't know for sure. It was not as if the canine had actually quantified her hunger; she had simply responded that she was and nothing more. The hybrid had already grown used to the coyote's manner of speaking, just as easily as she'd become accustomed to Cotl's strange explosions of profanity.

"Fishing is not hard. Sit on a rock, look at the water. Wait for the fish to come by. They're usually bright and silver, so you can see them coming by," the hybrid responded, continuing closer to the water's edge. It would be easier to simply show the other canine what she meant, but a verbal explanation could not hurt. The other canine spoke rather softly, and Kae twisted her head to peer at her curiously. "No?" the hybrid inquired, raising her eyebrows. "You lived inland?" the hybrid continued, realizing she was unlikely to receive more information than she already knew without attaching a question. The hybrid had realized by now the canine was used to being spoken to first, and she wanted to encourage some small amount of autonomy in her, but she was not sure on how to go about that.

The slave listened carefully to the explanation. It did not automatically make her a fisher, of course, but it gave her an idea. Vieira moved to a rock that had a clear view of the water and within easy reach of her master. Her golden eyes turned to look at Kaena's paws in anticipation for her first lesson. It was not often she got to learn something and she would take this to heart, knowing if Kaena was going to teach her, it would come up later. Before the lesson, though, came another question about her sheltered life and her eyes flicked toward the moving water, softly moving against the rocks. "I heard about it just outside of the city but I was not allowed to leave. I was never allowed to go to the coast," she said and shrugged a little with the information. She had no prior idea what the ocean looked like before today and if she had never seen one, she would have been all right. However, with the sight in front of her, she felt a connection to it that she had never felt to any other scenery.

The hybrid was intrigued by the other canine's speech, and even as she concentrated on the water before her, she spoke, though her voice was far softer than it had been before as she was focused on her fishing and trying not to scare the prey away. "Where did you live?" the hybrid asked. Whereever this Vieira was from, that was where her Eris was as well. The hybrid woman knew she would not go to see her daughter; instead she had to wait and see if Eris would return to Inferni. Kaena could not leave this place again.

The hybrid's golden eye remained focused on the surface of the water in front of her, watching for the distinctive silvery flash of a nearby fish. The water was still for the most part, stirred only on the surface by the breeze drifting in from the bay. "There," the coyote hissed, her focus shifting instantly to a bright flash of silver reflecting in the water. The hybrid watched the fish's shadow as it drifted closer toward them, and in a blur of movement she darted forward, plunging her whole face in below the water, returning an instant later with a writhing fish in her mouth.

When in her two-legged form, she preferred to fish with her hands, but paw-fishing was more difficult when four-legged. The fish struggled in her jaws for a moment, and she clenched them down, quickly killing it. Kaena set the fish down for a moment, laying it at her own feet so she might speak for a moment. "We'll go to my cave now, and you can eat and get settled," the hybrid said. Kaena was taking control here, to be certain—she was not asking, rather, telling Vieira what was going down, but perhaps her treatment was an improvement over Vie's former owners.

"Mexico," she answered, though she was not sure how detailed she wanted it. The question was given after she was not allowed to go far and she thought Kaena might want a little more information. "I lived with Master Astaroth, I had a little room behind his home but a lot of the times I stayed in his bed," she said, unmoved by the fact she shared a bed with her father. It had never been taught wrong to her, Astaroth and Sivaro encouraged it. "When he died, I lived with someone named Sivaro, in his bed, who was a friend of Asta," she instructed and turned to look at the water. "When Master Sivaro passed away, Eris took me and most of the time I was chained up outside," she said as her ears angled to the back of her head.

She fell silent, because her words went in line and Kaena caught a fish as if it were the easiest thing in the world. Vieira had watched carefully, leaned forward to see, and thought she might be able to after some practice. Carefully, she stood on the wet rock and turned herself to follow. "Yes ma'am," she responded quickly and quietly and moved as she did toward her home.

Mexico. The hybrid woman was familiar with that place, at least in passing—someone had mentioned it or explained it to her before, or she'd read about it in a book at some point. The hybrid could not recall where she had acquired this knowledge, but she knew it was further south than the former United States, which was just below where they were—in lovely old Canada. Kaena did not know specifics beyond that as to when any of these places began or ended; she imagined them like circles arranged one on top of another, though she had seen a map before and she knew the world was not perfectly shaped in any way.

The silver-furred hybrid listened carefully, but unfortunately for her, the Quintus revealed more about her own past than Eris's. Still, that included information about Astaroth, and while that was not the specific information the coyote was fishing for, it was interesting nonetheless, and it did not surprise her to learn Astaroth would have taken his own kin. The hybrid herself walked that dangerous line, sometimes blurring the lines between familial love and lustful love—but she kept those thoughts to herself, and she surely didn't act on them.

The hybrid listened, and nodded for her response, as her mouth was filled with the fish's body at the moment. The silver-furred hybrid continued briskly on toward the cave, as it was not far. Kaena had claimed one of the caves closest to the ocean; she could hear it sometimes inside. It was a much shorter walk to the cave, and in a moment the silvery hybrid and her charge were outside. The hybrid tossed her russet-splashed headed toward the entrance, trotting inside and setting the fish down on one of the low-slung rock shelves on either side of the narrower beginning passage of her cave. "Little alcove off to the side's yours," the coyote said, tossing her head to indicate the small room off to the side.

Kaena thought it strange for a moment to allow this creature to take up residence in her home, but what else was Kae to do with her? She wanted to see Gabriel and gather his thoughts on the matter; her son was certainly an intelligent canine, and the silver-furred Centurion trusted his judgment. "Eat and rest for the night. Questions?" the ashen-furred canine asked, though she figured not.

There was a lack of response when Vieira gave her living situation history and she wondered if she should have gotten more. Vieira did not ask for her thoughts but instead watched Kaena's form quietly while they moved from rock to rock and back up to the circle of caves of Inferni. The trip was silent and Vieira watched the back of her owner's feet while they moved and selected a cave. It was different than the old ruin houses in Eterne but it served the same purpose and was not much difference in size. It was just partially underground and just as cold. Her muscles tensed as she moved around behind Kaena to look at the cave, watching her set the fish down and instruct her which room was hers.

Her eyes filtered upward where Kaena must sleep and her gaze shifted to the small room off to the side. Vieira made no move to go there now, but instead moved to the fish. She would eat, then rest, and that was it. "No, ma'am," she said quietly and felt her tail curl further against the inside of her thigh. "Thank you for the fish," she announced and glimpsed back in her direction before she approached it. She considered waiting for further permission but she already told her to eat and rest. Vieira made an assumption that she would be left in peace but she could not be sure and would not be surprised if anything else happened, of course. Quietly, the slave lowered her head and ate at the fish, making sure to avoid making a mess or anything that would displeased the woman.

I mean, you reply once more if you wanna, but we'll have new thread, too? :o

The sandy-colored coyote in front of her peered around the insides of the hybrid's cave, though she did not gawk around openly. The hybrid had few possessions in the world, but what she did have she stored here. Kaena trusted Viei not to mess with anything without the hybrid matron's express permission; so far the younger canine had shown to be completely subservient. The coyote was curious about this; had she ever known anything else, or had she simply been conditioned in this way since her birth?

Viei answered negatively, and thanked the hybrid for the fish, to which Kaena nodded. The hybrid supposed it was her responsibility to insure this canine was cared for; it had been just slightly disturbing to learn Eris had kept her in chains. Kaena did not possess such things and she had no desire to inflict such a thing on another living canine; freedom of movement was important for the hybrid. "You're welcome," she responded anyway, perhaps of habit or genuine politeness, and offered a faint smile.

"I'll be back in a while, then," the hybrid said, wondering if she ought to offer more instruction momentarily. She supposed not; it was likely what Viei wanted and needed anyway. The Centurion turned and paced from her cave back into the territory, her mind occupied and sated with a new conundrum to ponder. That was more than enough to shove Haku out of her head for the night.

Vieira felt weird when Kaena announced she was welcome. It was foreign to her. She knew what it meant, of course, but the rarity it was when someone said it to her made it odd. Kaena was new to this, she supposed, and she swallowed a mouthful of fish and hesitated going further. When she said she was going to go for a while, Vieira nodded and offered a quiet yes ma'am and waited for her to leave. When Kaena was gone, Vieira turned back into her meal and ate with haste, faster than she would have with Kaena around. She was hungry and even with the fish on her stomach, she felt she could eat more. Her travels were exhausting and had taken quite a bit out of her but she would not ask for more and now, she would get used to the cave and where she would be sleeping.
