These days, Kaena’s preaching in their youth still seemed to hold some truth to it. He had never believed her outright, even though he had seen the truth in carcasses spread in the sand. There was no doubt a contradiction in her words and in her actions, but there had never been a time when he had considered she had hated wolves without reason. Gabriel did not call himself a wolf because he could not stand to feel like one of them, and because he would not accept himself as such after seeing the wickedness done by their kind. He knew he was not a coyote, but he had chosen his side and made himself a home with it. He was a hybrid, a coy-wolf, and he knew that no matter how much he despised that part of his blood, it had made him whole and given him the weight and the power he needed. With two hundred pounds at his disposal, the Aquila was formidable, and this was why he had managed to keep the clan not only together, but make it prosper.

Her comment made a faint smile break across his face, knowing it was true. The pull of Inferni was incessant, like a magnet, and perhaps the only place that they would ever belong. Scintilla had considered Gabriel something special, but his place was not with them. Few of their rank understood what Gabriel was trying to do—fewer still understood that he obeyed a higher power then their vicious then leader, whom likely died in that great fire. It had been the first, and Gabriel certainly did not believe it would be the last. The fire over the mountains had proven this. The Voice was quiet now, but he had no doubt it would call again. His Lord worked in mysterious ways.

She had no child, but it seemed like she might have once known a man as more then a friend, given the way she spoke. Cocking his head doggishly, Gabriel narrowed his eyes, finding her body language all too telling. Either she had tried for them and found no luck, or only desired them but never been able to make such a thing reality. “Probably never found the right guy,” he offered, shrugging and dismissing her concerns as he might idle worry. Given the way their mother was bred, and her children’s record (Ahemait had three children as it stood, and Razekiel a likewise number) , it seemed unlikely that Rikka would ever go without being able to produce children. Medically, he had no idea that things could go wrong, as these were things outside of his knowledge. Gabriel was ignorant to medicine beyond basic anatomy—beyond placing bones and other field combat medicine, he knew only what he had gathered from Corona and his son. “We’ve only got one kid here now, Mason. He’s lucky—he was on his own for months before he found us. Though he’s hardly a kid anymore,” Gabriel added, unsure of their youngest member’s exact age, but able to read it through his body. Mason barely looked like a child.

Figured this might be a good time to bring up Vieira :o SoSuWriMo 536

She had never really thought that their mother was filling their head with lies or that Kaena's beliefs were unfounded, it was just she had never seen anything to truly make her believe that wolves were all evil. She had never been able to turn a completely blind eye to the crimes of the clan and that made it doubly hard to believe that the larger canines were the ones who were at fault. Rikka had known many wolves and many coyotes and she had met just as many bad coyotes as she had bad wolves. There were horrible people in the world, there was no arguing that point, but she did not and had not ever believed that that evil was isolated to a single species. Her travels had only reinforced that disbelief and it all culminated in her stay in The Haight. There wolves, coyotes, dogs, and all sorts of hybrids had lived together in peace and prosperity. If what her mother thought were true such a place could not exist.

His faint smile made her own grow. It must be something in their blood that drew them back to this place no matter how far or long they all wandered. She didn't believe Inferni was the only place she could belong for she had felt a greater sense of belonging in the commune than she ever had felt in the clan. Even then though, when she had felt perfectly content with where she was the call of the clan had come to her and nothing she could do would make it turn away. Even if this didn't end up working out, she hoped at least that magnetism would be silenced for a while and she could return to where she was happy. Still, she did want this to work. No matter the fact that there was so little closeness between herself and her family, Rikka wanted to be around them and this was the only place where they could all be together. She had sacrificed a good deal to return and she hoped that it hadn't been for naught.

Gabriel's words and the fact that he did not seem to think that fate a possibility for her did more to comfort her than she would have expected. The sorrow fled from her face and turned her smile once more genuine. "Yeah, hopefully that's it." Rikka wasn't really looking for a mate, but maybe Mother Nature had a plan for her and she truly just had not met the man who would gift her with children yet. Only time would tell and the woman would do her best to be patient. She knew it was unlikely that she would be unable to conceive given Kaena's fertility, but it was a possibility that she had not bee able to rule out completely. "Yes, Kaena told me about him. It's a wonder he made it so long on his own." Thinking so directly of their dam made her mind return to thoughts of Vieira and her demeanor quickly sobered. She didn't know if Gabriel knew about the girl or not, but it was a subject she couldn't keep silent on. "Gabriel, do you know about Vieira?"

No part of Gabriel believed for an instance Inferni was without sin. He had rushed into battle at his mother’s beck and call, and seen the bodies of the children she had slaughtered. There was no part of him that found this at all forgivable, but he had no control over any individual—not even his children, who had long since abandoned their home. Ezekiel, Gabriel had realized, had done so with greater purpose then his sister. Still, the fact that they had left him stung. Abandonment was the one thing that Gabriel found hurt more then anything else, and how it hurt. He no longer allowed it to show, but if the nightmares (which he avoided only by sleeping so erratically) proved anything, there was no part of him that could find safety or comfort in those around him. They would, as time wore on, abandon him again. It was an inevitability that Gabriel lived with day to day, and swallowed and buried deep in him.

She was so unlike this place, and he wondered what had happened to her. Rikka had once been angry, and full of fury from he knew not what, but she now seemed to be focused instead on the world as a whole, and no longer half bottling up her emotions. The fear of being childless was something Gabriel could not indentify with, but he did not think it was likely. Someone would prove themselves worth her time, worth conceiving children with, and then she would be able to find herself some peace. Notwithstanding, of course, the fact that Inferni was never half so stable as he would like, and that the quiet surrounding their neighbors to the south was peculiar and would last only for a manner of time. He inhaled the cold air, sensing something off kilter, and let his eyes leave her to focus instead on the landscape around them. The deer had long since left, and the fields were empty, tall grass swaying in the breeze, an amber sea offset by the ocean somewhere far behind them. The smell of salt remained in the air, and mingled in with the coyote’s pelts as it had when Inferni had lived on Hell’s Coast.

The unfamiliar name made his attention return to her, gold yellow eyes narrowing sharply. “Should I?” He asked cautiously, wondering why she had waited until now to bring it up.

Rikka liked to think that she had many people that she could depend on, for she had many friends, even if most of them did not live in this land. However, when she really thought of it, there was no one around that she felt would stay with her through thick or thin. True, mostly this was due to the fact that she had just returned, but even with her family she did not feel that sense of security. She knew most of this was her own fault for spending so much time apart from them, but she couldn't help but wonder what would happen if things ever got bad. Would they be there for her? Would anyone? While she was open with most, she did not fully ever put her trust in anyone. In that way she was similar to her brother, though their reasons were different. The closest, most trusting bond she had with anyone was with her lovers and all of them were back in The Haight. Would anyone in these lands offer her such a connection? Things were so different here, even outside the clan.

Her travels had changed her and when she had entered the commune she had been reborn. That place had seemed to hold all the answers for her, all the self contentment that she had always been searching for. Before coming there she had had no idea that such a place could exist and now she knew it was the purest flower, though an extremely fragile one. There she had learned to be happy with herself and to respect and treasure the world around her. She had learned the true meaning of love and peace and unity. The hybrid had learned about herself. It was the greatest gift that anyone could ask for and she was so thankful that it had finally been granted to her. The only thing missing from her life were pups and whenever she had them then she would have nothing else to desire. Only to live a happy and peaceful existence.

Perhaps the subject of Vieira should have been brought up immediately, but she had wanted to talk more with her brother and to learn about him before delving into unpleasant and more business like matters. What was going on there was more upsetting to her than any of the carnage or violence. "I met her the other day. A timid little coyote. She said she belonged to Kaena. That she was Kaena's slave." Their matching eyes met, though her's were filled with a deep sense of distress and injustice. "She's keeping one of our own as property. It isn't right." There was no question in her voice, it was a statement, written in stone as far as she was concerned. No one had the right to keep another. It shouldn't be stood for and she hoped that Gabriel would understand and agree.

With the exclusion of family, Gabriel’s only friend was Hybrid. This was, of course, a very horrible example of a friend. He didn’t think that they would be considered this, though, given that their dynamic was one of superior and subordinate, and they valued each other only for their strength, nothing more. Had Hybrid been weak, or at all soft, Gabriel would have dismissed him in an instant. There was no place in his world for the weak and the useless. Where his trust lay was with those who had proven themselves; in his cousin, whom had accepted him only after a test of strength, and in those members of his clan that had drawn blood or shed their own in order to protect their home.

Rikka had been reborn in the sun, in a land of flowers and peace that Gabriel did not know. He was born through blood and fire, in the desert where reason had belonged to madman. God and the Devil lived out there, surrounded by bleached bones and human ruins. They had no purpose living in such a place, but they had fought and died for it. His past was cut in his face, in his body, and radiated through every black-tipped strand of fur and every grain of sand that had stained his coat and left behind the illusion of a coyote he had arrived with. No more did he pretend to be such a thing, as he had when he had arrived. Gabriel was a wolf, and Gabriel was a coyote, but he was neither so long as that duality tore into his reason. Baneesh had not died for nothing, and if his blood had proven anything, it was that wolves were wicked. By and large, they were all the same. And Gabriel, with his mixed blood, was no different.

His eyes remained hard, irritated that she had led him on for so long. Gabriel was not used to pleasant conversation, and having it ruptured by the sudden business at hand more then doubled his unpleasant reaction. A growl rippled up from his chest, muzzle twitching and ears pushing forward with a sudden dire purpose. What did she expect, coming to him with idle banter when there was something else on her mind? The information was not as terrible as he had initially believed, but the fact of the matter was that it had come to him from his sister, and not from the matron when she was his co-leader, of all things. Almost as suddenly as she had finished speaking, Gabriel was moving, pushing himself to his feet. “A slave?” He asked, but the question was redundant. The idea of a slave was arcane, and did not belong here, much less in Inferni of all places. Kaena should have understood what Gabriel was trying to do, and having a leader of the clan running all over another canines—another coyotes freedom was destroying everything he had fought to build during his time as Aquila.

In a way he rebirth had probably only served to separate herself more from her kin. Neither Lykois nor de le Poer's believed in peace. They believed in blood which was a thing that Rikka could no longer bear. She would do her best to turn a blind eye, to forgive her family their sins for without them she would have no life. Still, the woman could no longer condone such practices even if she did her best to ignore them. No validation of violence would ever come from her. Defense was one thing, and that she understood. If someone made the first strike then the clan had no choice but to defend themselves. Defense of self or others were the only times that she could find violence tolerable. Too often though it was senseless. She wished her relatives would learn to fight with their voice instead of their fangs, but it was a futile dream. Inferni had been born of blood and hate and would die that way. It was hard to change such a place's colors, if not impossible

The woman hadn't meant to lead her brother on in any way, she truly had wanted to have pleasant conversation with him. It hadn't been some ploy or anything of the sort, she was not such a deceptive creature. Still, clearly the shift in conversation had angered Gabriel and as the growl came from him she instinctively flinched and ducked her head, ears folding against her skull. Golden yellow eyes were now focused intently on the ground, not wishing to do anything to raise his temper further. It had been a mistake to bring up Vieira and her concerns, she saw that now, but she could not take it back. Gabriel rose quickly to his feet, but Rikka remained hunkered down in submission and a hint of fear. "Yes," she responded to his question that really did not require an answer. The hybrid had not been mistaken, she had heard the words directly from the slight coyote's mouth.

How could he not believe in blood? Above all other things, above his family, above his instincts, above God the Lord on High, there had been blood. It had brought him into the world and it had cut his body with strange patterns and constellations whose meanings he alone knew. They were made from strangers, friends, the teeth and claws of dead men that no longer haunted his dreams. One alone stood, which had been his first death. Baneesh had been his death, and the wolf who had killed the nameless woman was his baptism through blood. There had been one since then, when he had become so unholy that the darkness that lingered oh so close to the light sought his sanity. The scar on his palm proved this. Rikka had known, in a way—she had found him.

She sunk from his wrath, but it was just as well. While not directed at her, he could see their mother in her face, in her eyes which would never be half as cruel as any of their family. Without another word, Gabriel turned on his heels and was gone, a blackened streak against the tall grass, storming off to confront Kaena and demand an explanation.
