The fish was certainly cool enough to touch with her bare fingers, and the hybrid pried the remainder of the fillet from the dagger and set it back down, planning to perhaps ask Vieira to clean it in the ocean water later so it did not smell of fish. The silver-furred woman devoured the last of her meal, snapping it up almost greedily from her hand and licking the last of the lingering grease from her fingers. She eyed the next cut for a minute, allowing the first to settle in her stomach before she started on the second, finding it unnecessary to respond to Vieira's verbal confirmation. The hybrid watched as the other canine reached forward for one of the heads, and Kaena wrinkled her nose. She'd never been partial to those, herself, but if Vieira liked them, the silvery woman did not think it fit to comment. After a moment, she reached for the dagger again, and used it to neatly slice through the flesh of the second cut, using one end of the pointed crystal thing to shove the slightly smaller piece toward Vieira, taking the second out again with the knife, though this time she set the object down and simply grasped the fish in her hand. She hoped the small gesture would be enough to indicate to the Quintus that it was her half of the last filet.

Vieira did not necessarily like the heads but they were not bad. She took what she got most of the time and if it was all Astaroth left her, she would eat the entire head because she would be hungry. Kaena moved toward the pan with the knife of her father and she tensed, but watched as she cut the filet almost in half. The older woman took the bigger half and as a smile lingered on her lips, Vieira set the fish head back down on the pan and too the side and picked up the fish that had been cut for her. The gesture was something she had not expected but it was more than welcome. An emotion filled up inside her at the woman's kindness, something she had rarely (if ever) seen from those who controlled her before. She could not really recognize the emotion she felt but she felt relaxed and her level of worry was decreased as she ate and began to feel a warmth in her belly from a full meal.

The coyote finished her half of the fish rather quickly, and she definitely decided she did not want the heads. The eyes looked positively revolting after cooking, and she wouldn't consider eating that part of it, though she figured Vieira was free to if she wanted it. As for herself, she was full; the food had been warm and filling and quite good. The hybrid woman thought the other canine was certainly proving her worth, if nothing else. There was a comfortable feeling in the air between them, and the hybrid had no desire to change it.

Kaena leaned back a little, reclining contentedly and inclining her body toward the warmth of the fire. The air was already chilly, and the hybrid was well aware winter would be in full swing soon. The leaves had fallen off of most of the trees and the ground would soon be blanketed with snow. The hybrid did not think her cave was ready for winter at all; they had but two thin blankets between them and only a few candles, which were good for a tiny bit of warmth and light without suffocating from smoke.from a fire. The silvery coyote looked to the other canine, speaking after a moment. "I think maybe you ought to head into the city again soon." They needed more supplies for the oncoming frost, and the hybrid woman still was unwilling to venture into the city herself, though this time she considered equipping the smaller canid with one of the knives for her own protection.

The rest of the meal was quiet and Vieira did not mind. She was not talkative anyway and generally, silence was better for her unless she'd done something wrong. She did not want to get too comfortable to not expect a punishment, she'd suffered through that once already, but she didn't think anything was too bad at this moment. She did an okay job cooking and Kaena was satisfied, that was all she could ask for right now. When Kaena finished her fish, Vieira had too and she picked the head back up she had been toying with only to nervously pick at it and take what good meat was in side. She was full herself but she could not stop, a habit she had had for so long in fear she might not eat for days.

However, when Kaena leaned back and relaxed, she spoke of other things and Vieira immediately putt he fish head back down. To her, it was a sign she was moving on and Vieira had to be on top of her game, thus their meal was over. Vieira would have picked them all clean for the last bit of undesirable meat from the heads were gone had Kaena remained in silence.

This new information caused her ears to perk and she nodded. The city had been frightening and she'd run into a rather strange wolf, but he had been helpful. Right now, her might could not gather how awful the city could be. "Yes, ma'am," she said quietly with a nod. Worry was in her tone but she had to control it. She could not fail such a task as this and so she would have to listen carefully. "What would you like me to get?" she asked, rubbing her hands clean of the fish she'd devoured.

The ash-furred hybrid enjoyed having a runner to and from the city more than anything. They had needed things, to be certain, and the coyote woman was too shit-scared to do it herself. There was the possibility of running into Haku again weighing heavily on her mind, and the ash-furred coyote did not think that another encounter with him would end with her walking away. She was scared to death of him above all, and she restricted herself to Inferni territory and near Inferni territory for the most par now. The northern territories were mostly safe, only because he would have had to circle all the way around Inferni to get up there and it was unlikely she'd find him there.

The other canine ceased eating, and appeared at attention, responding affirmatively. Kaena was becoming used to the answers. The Quintus inquired as to what Kaena wanted, and the hybrid contemplated a moment before responding. "A few more blankets would be good. Candles. Matches or a lighter's good, if you can find it," the hybrid said. She had her two chunks of sparking rock, and that was a safety net, but it was much easier to light candles with the lighter or matches. "I think you ought to grab something for yourself, too," the hybrid said, giving the other canine permission to seek whatever she pleased in the wasteland of the city. Kaena was curious to see what Vieira returned with.

"Maybe a chain and collar," she teased impulsively, trying a joke out on the tawny-furred canine. The silvery hybrid had a poor sense of humor at best, and she hardly realized Vieira might not really comprehend it as a joke, but a literal instruction. The air of comfort between them had relaxed her quite effectively, and she grinned to show it was good natured, but as was the usual case with the hybrid woman's smile, her scars marred it and made it generally terrifying.

Idly, Vieira began to put things together while Kaena spoke. She put the knife she had used on the small hand towel that had been wrapped around the pan handle of the skillet. She cleaned off the blade and set it aside, her eyes turned to the guts she had pulled out of the fish and would move them when she knew Kaena was done eating for sure. She did not want to put the rest in the pan to bury a little ways away later and then clean. Her eyes turned to the knife Kaena had used and her hand trembled at the thought of touching it and she hoped Kaena would keep it to herself.

The slave listened to the list Kaena made and nodded to make sure she knew. Blankets, candles, matches. It was an easy and short list and because she was going to the city, she decided to look for herbs for whenever they cooked again. She knew they came prepackaged for humans, she had seen them, but after a while she had her own little garden behind Astaroth's home. It would be a nice surprise, she hoped, since Kaena was fond of the meal she just prepared. Her jaw opened to tell her she could do it, but Kaena spoke again.

The woman felt a shake of her form as she was told to get a chain and collar. Vieira did not notice the tone of a joke in her voice and her expression went unnoticed because her eyes were focused on the pan in front of her. She should have known better than feel too comfortable, this happened the other day when she'd gotten in trouble for sleeping too late. Her muscles were tense and her breath was slow, trying to hold herself together, and she nodded her head again and in all seriousness finally responded with a, "yes, ma'am."

This post is balls. |:

The ashen-furred canine tilted her head curiously when Vieira seemed to stiffen at the joke rather than laugh, and disappointment flooded her, though she made an effort not to show it. The other canine did not meet her eyes when she spoke, and the hybrid thought perhaps she'd missed the grin, though she thought her lighter tone was indicative enough of a jest rather than seriousness. Turning her head to gaze once more at the fire, away from Vieira, the hybrid sighed emphatically and watched the flames dance a moment, declining to answer the smaller canine's simple affirmative answer for a moment, considering admonishing her suddenly for continued use of the title ma'am.

"I think you should take a knife with you, too," the hybrid said, vocalizing her prior ideas. The ritual knife would be of little use except as scare value, and anyone with an eye for weaponry would look at it and know it was quite fragile. The utility knife was smaller, but it was far more effective as a weapon than the ritual dagger. "That one," the hybrid indicated, her gaze shifting back to the golden-furred canine, pointing to the black-handled knife. "Think you could at least wave it around to scare someone?" the coyote asked, rather snappishly. Her mood had soured somewhat since her joke was not so well-received, and she absently stabbed at the ground with her toe-claw, digging up a small amount of soil.

No one had ever joked with her before. She lacked a sense of humor but she noticed the chance in Kaena all of a sudden and she didn't know what had changed. It made her squirm a little with worry, afraid she'd done something wrong but she could not find her mistake. Her former punishment had been evident and she saw what she had done wrong and now she was living in a moment of fear because she could not figure it out. It was a similar feeling with Astaroth and Sivaro, no matter how hard she tried to avoid getting in trouble and how rarely she did something wrong. Something would be an inch out of place or something they thought she had done but hadn't. It was a difficult way to live and maybe with Kaena, Vieira had been trying to find a new way. The woman seemed to prove her wrong more than she liked.

When Kaena spoke again, Vieira listened closely as she thought it was a good idea to go to the city with a weapon. She didn't know the extent of how bad the place was since her first trip had not been all that bad. But if Kaena, someone tough and dominant as she, felt she needed a knife, how awful could this place be? And what if Vieira ran into someone? Even with a knife, she didn't think it would change anything. It would be evident of her fear and she wouldn't be able to hold the thing properly. Just having it would shake her to her core with the idea of having to use it. She didn't object, though, and she grabbed it and cleaned it off with the hand towel a second time. "Yes, ma'am," she said quietly and set it beside her, her eyes watching the shine the blade gave off from the fire. "When you would like me to go?" she asked, tearing her eyes away and looking at the elder female's form.

Yes ma'am. Tongue

The silver-furred hybrid's good mood had all but evaporated, but she did not allow this to show. As far as Vieira knew, the canine was just as even-tempered as she had been all the time. Her belly was full, at least, and there wasn't that sinking pit of misery sucking her down—the silver-furred hybrid was merely annoyed. This was infinitely more preferrable than being depressed, however, and the hybrid almost reveled in her annoyance. There was life to it, a fire that had been absent from her life thus far. The other canine responded once more affirmatively, giving the hybrid no more fuel to the spark of annoyance, and instead made an inquiry.

Thoughtfully, the silver-furred woman tilted her head to the sky, her single golden eye gazing at the gray clouds, her quivering charcoal nose testing the chilled air. "Soon. Very soon," the coyote warned. "We'll see snow soon, I think. Better to go before that hits," she added matter-of-factly, though she figured that was obvious to Vieira. It was better to trudge to the city in simple cold rather than frigid weather and a blizzard. The coyote stood up slowly, climbing to her feet as though it required effort. "Clean up," she said somewhat abrasively, trotting inside of her cave to take stock of what she owned, hoping taking a glance over her possessions would spark her memory for anything else she might want Vieira to return with.
