Kol was in her element, but to say she was happy would be the biggest lie of the decade. The night wrapped around her ebony lupine form like a blanket, holding her in its embrace as she wandered through her home. She'd lost track of just how long she'd been back in Dahlia, her days taken up mostly with repairing and improving the shelter provided by the treehouse Elliot had built in the summer. Winter was closing in, and the structure was in need of insulation and the finishing of the roof. Kol had finally replaced all of the splintered roof slats with new ones, and now that she was here to keep up on its maintenance, the little house should prove to be a beacon of warmth and snugness in the months to come. Of course, it would be even more snug were her beloved still around.

Elliot had followed behind Kol when she'd returned from Solbjorg Valley. He'd arrived in Dahlia a couple of weeks after she'd been reaccepted. For a short time, everything had gone back to normal, back to the way it had been before the events that had ripped her from her pack in the first place. But then the dream seemed to fade once more. Elliot had been missing now for a few weeks, his scent still heavy in the treehouse they shared, but his pressence found nowhere in the packlands. Kol would catch drifts of it here and there around the territory, but it would always lead to a dead end. The female knew her mate was still alive somewhere; she hadn't come across any signs of foul play or danger whatsoever. Her search had led her to discover several of the vicious metal jaws Haku had warned were being set around the borders, but near none of them was the scent of her mate. After setting each new trap off with a thick branch that could otherwise have been someone's leg, Kol removed them and took them back to her home for storage to be given to Haku at a later date. If she'd left them, whoever meant harm to her pack would simply reset them again to threaten the limbs and lives of her packmates.

For a brief time, Kol had entertained the idea of returning to Solbjorg or wandering beyond the lands of Souls to search for her missing mate. Thinking harder on it, she came to realize that it would be just her luck that he would return while she was off in who-knew-where looking for him. Besides, she'd spent enough time away from Dahlia as it was, and all that remained in her birth place for her were bad memories. And so tonight, as every night, the black Dahlian set her paws on the familiar path patrolling the borders, looking for some hope of her vanished beloved, and any sign of danger hiding in the bushes of the night-kissed landscape.
