Never come back.

Kai heard his brother’s voice ringing in his skull, and pinned his ears flat against his head. The scars that crossed along his haunches began to itch again, fresh and still very angry. How in the word had it come to this? Exiled from the only home he had ever known, and left without any resources to survive beyond his limited knowledge of hunting. The weight he had lost was apparent, but it was not much—his ninety pounds had shrunk to seventy five or so, but a thick winter coat (inherited from his no good father) had done its duty not only in keeping him warm but hiding this embarrassing fact. He was not experience enough to do more then hunt small animals or scavenge, having never led a proper hunt and only acted as wing-man to his pack mates.

Former pack mates, he reminded himself with a grunt. Talon had made that abundantly clear. They were no longer brothers, not after the scars they had left one another with. All along his hindquarters there was proof, but his brother had walked away far worse—and would have died, if their whore of a mother hadn’t stepped in. She favored the white-furred child because he looked like his father, and she had leapt in to make sure he would survive. Talon had kept his position, undeservingly, and Kai had been run out because as far as his family saw, the best way to deal with a threat was to eliminate it. They wouldn’t—no, they couldn’t—kill him, so their only option was exile.

Which had brought him south, away from the harsh winter that was pressing ever closer. He had been all right for the past two months, but now that Mother Nature had her icy claws out there was no hope for survival alone. He had come south east, and been horrified when he had stumbled across a wolf skull on a pike. Luckily, he had turned tail and fled from that horror long before the overpowering scent of coyote had been made tangible. Kai had stayed a fair distance away from their border, and found himself wandering unfamiliar forests for what felt like forever. Then, as he began to lose hope of ever finding anything outside of angry coyotes he came across a very palpable male scent. It rushed into his nose and he froze, suddenly intimidated by the scent of an older, much more powerful male.

Although the lesser canines were daring enough to break into his lands Haku Soul would never give up his border patrolling. It was an immovable element in his every day and he feared not Gabriel and his little army of misfits. How could the doggish hybrid be upset with him? He had only complimented the woman and given her what he guessed no other man would, and he had barely pierced her skin at all. Cwmfen nic Graine had barely escaped with her life intact when a certain Inferni clan member had attacked her out of the blue. That had been fine, but now a war was rising just because of some damn woman and her shattered pride. Haku did not resent the wheels that were in motion. He had wanted it; waited for it for so long now. The pack was growing just at the right time. War brought groups of leaderless canines together whether the attraction to danger was conscious or not. Few of the newcomers knew what they would be facing when they promised to protect their new home, but that was not necessary. What he needed was a crimson earth and the stench of death and not flowers for once. As he strode along the obvious border he wondered if it really was true that he was a horrible person.

The large secui seemed to hesitate only for a moment when his eyes found a form with the colour of fine sand and gravel. Fangs were revealed within moments as always and he felt the hunger claw against his armoured ribcage. There was no time for bloodshed ever when the unique scent of fresh and unknown loner entered his nostrils. Although the man did not act with kindness, he did not treat his newcomers as horribly as he would want. Fresh blood for the fight was very important and he had to try to keep up whatever image that was not completely ruined by the horrors he had done. He stalked closer and stared at the young male in all his confusion. Face was empty and empty of the silent, fanged threat that had crossed the Rosen’s face when the stranger first had been discovered. ”What is your purpose here, stranger?” he wondered with that usual dark voice. He was secure and confident in his position and it was clearly reflected in his figure, head high, gaze direct and shortened tail trying to magically regain its length as it was held high with dominance.

There was less then a minute or two that passed before the scent before him became much more fresh then he had expected it to be. The reason for this became abundantly clear in the next few seconds; the brush ahead became disturbed, and the sound of snow compacting told Kai everything he needed to know. The man whose garish scent was so prominent on the borders was close, and he was approaching now. Though Kai did not like to think of himself as a boy (man, no, man) who feared, he felt doubt rise quickly and settle in his chest.

A hulking brute, more monster then wolf, broke the tree line then. Kai could not hide his reaction—pale blue eyes, only a few shades lighter then the man’s before him, widened. He was staring at a beast of muscle and sinew, made up of earth tones and scarred flesh. A wolf that’s mass, though it did not belong to him in his lupus body, was as dominating and impressive as the scent that radiated from his body. The yellowed fangs that were flashed was all the warning that Kai needed; his body dropped low to the earth and his tail curled protectively between his legs. Those pale eyes, which had been insatiably drawn to the very apparent alpha, now stared into the snow and mud before him. It was the voice that made his ears, low against his skull, rise and swivel to follow the noise. It sounded as if the very forest was speaking, with all the authority and mastery of a man who knew his purpose in the world, and whom had made very sure to find it.

Even now, knowing nothing about the man before him, Kai realized he had found a figure that would undoubtedly be the answer to his own place in the world. “I came seeking a home,” he answered shortly, tenor voice soft and respectful. Despite the scars along his haunches and the resentment in his heart, Kai had not matured enough for his voice to drop much lower then it had. It was a contamination of youth, something that made him feel weak and worthless. Still, he wanted to prove himself—and now, more importantly, he wanted to prove himself to the man before him. A man he had just met, but now saw as someone who could offer him everything he had ever wanted.

They were all so young, lurking behind the scenes in their search for meaning. Haku could give this to them; give them purpose and he guessed also a certain illusion of worth. He needed strong hearts and bodies equipped with fangs and claws. Fresh lived held little strength – the illusions were many amongst the youngsters, but he could only find hollow loath for them. He saw the eyes widen as his form was taken in and judged. He imagined the youngster’s heart pace pick up and revelled at the mental image of the increased bloodstream. It seemed harder for the large secui to focus these latest weeks. He always found his eyes’ focus to flicker unstably like an old, slowly dying television. His thought found crimson and darkness everywhere, not just in the corners of his mind anymore. The light in his heart was becoming dangerously scarce and he was more dangerous and unstable than ever – this even without realizing it. He was the currently worst choice of a leader in ‘Souls, but at the same time there had been no choices for Dahlia’s members. Cercelee had fled and left them to die in his hands, and she knew this so well. He hoped the knowledge would burn a hole in her soul.

He saw the boy’s body give into the submission and he was pleased to see that his brain functioned well enough to discover a superior immediately in sight. The light yet masculine voice replied with words the earthen coloured male wished to hear, though the only change in the Dahlian was eyes filling up with dark clouds. Yellowed teeth flashed again as his dark caramel ears swivelled back towards his skull. He seemed to consider this youngster sceptically as he slowly took half a circle around the boy, obviously sizing him up as the snow crunched so lovely under his oversized paws. ”Is that so?” His lips curled ever so slightly upwards in quiet mocking, for why would he need a lanky, little useful child in his pack? He had every reason to try to push up Dahlia’s numbers, but the young male in front of him did not know this. Nothing was better than to force some nerves into activity. Even though numbers were only to be wasted on Inferni, he did not wish cowards to give him an untrue number of sacrificial souls. ”Why would I want a child to join my pack when war is upon us?” Lips twisted in silent disgust, though it was clear that no final judgment of the boy had fallen yet.

Kai had known his purpose in the place he had once called home. He was to succeed and gain the rank his brother had, through whatever means (and likely having to do with their whore of a mother), stolen from him. That was why he had gone to battle against his own blood, and now he had been left to suffer alone. Now he had no faith except the idea of finding a new purpose in the man before him. He was a beast of blood and flesh and power, and this was something that Kai found incredible. There had never been a time before when such might had made itself known to him—not his former alpha, not his absentee father, not any man that he could recall. This was something new and spectacular. Something he suddenly and entirely intended to follow, regardless of the cruelty in those eyes or the bared and yellowing fangs.

Kai’s body remained completely still, though he felt a shiver run up his spine upon feeling those burning blue eyes run all over his body. He wanted the man to see that he was not simply a runt run off for nothing. His body, while having lost weight, was not without mass behind it. The arctic heritage had done him well, and when he regained the lost mass he would be a force to be reckoned with. At the mention of war, twin impulses reared their heads. War was a frightening and unknown world to Kai, something that his pack had never faced and he, in his two years, had only heard of in passing. This was the weaker of the two impulses, shoved aside by the sudden and forceful need to prove himself. If he had to draw blood, if he had to kill, he would do so in order to gain whatever it was that took him to become mighty. “I can take orders,” he said quickly. “I’m not a very experienced fighter, but I can learn. I can do whatever you need me to, sir.” Though his eyes remained glued to the snow in front of his nose, Kai wanted so very badly to be able to look back up and see the man circling him, to read his face and implore him with those baby blues to make sure that the man knew everything he was saying was the truth.

There was no typical explosion of immaturity as the alpha’s words swept over the young male. What was a general trait amongst the younger generations was that they were so very eager to prove their worth. The boy spoke and tried to make the older man believe that he would do whatever was asked of him. Cream painted face twitched slightly at these foolish words, but the newcomer’s gaze was respectfully lowered to the ground at all time and could not see the brief touch of pulsing madness on the Dahlian monster’s face. He seldom took time to truly ponder whether or not Dahlia would follow his lead into death and destruction. Haku had been disappointed in the past all the packs had met and none had been willing to fight together with him despite the fact that the clan had been a thorn in their side in the past. They were silly and unwilling to sacrifice to get what they wanted. The packs wanted to have the illusion of comradeship lingering visibly, though it was all bullshit. Without him Dahlia would have no leader and he trusted the members to follow his lead because they had no other choice. Few knew the full reasons for Gabriel’s sudden attack. He knew who this one eyed woman was now and thought it ironic that he had fucked Gabriel’s own mother without realizing this until later. It was the perfect blast to Inferni’s leader though, and Haku was very content with himself. The bitch had even liked it.

”Can you learn fast?” the secui wondered loudly, for a moment resenting having driven away Cwmfen nic Grain. It had been necessary at that time though and he knew that he would be better off without her overall. She had betrayed him and taken his enemy as her lover. The only pleasure he had left was that he had gotten a taste of her before her foolish coyote boyfriend. It was a shame nevertheless, for he had hungered for the pair’s two children. Thoughts suddenly brought him back to the day when he had seen a large loner kill and devour a child. Haku did not understand the pleasure that the unpacked man had found in the act, but he knew now how it was to eat a child’s flesh. It was soft and their souls were purer than anything else, giving them an exquisite taste. Haku had eaten his own children and enjoyed it. He stared at the male and pondered about those blue eyes. Blue spoke of innocence, but it could be wrenchingly false, like Haku’s orbs. He wondered if the lone wolf in front of him would follow a maniac – a crazy psychopath. Time was slipping out between his fingers like sand. Would be able to keep up his façade long enough to see one of his few dreams come true? The hunger was unbearable and he was uncertain of his own survival if he was to fail at this task. ”Promise me courage and loyalty and you will find a home well worth fighting for here.” Again his focus had fallen away and turned inwards instead.

It would be foolish, and indeed foolhardy, for Kai to be brash and haughty in the presence of such greatness. He could read the alpha’s face as clearly as he could the signs in the sky, or the scents that spelled out death and decay. With these terrible things surrounding such a place, it seemed unreal and even unreasonable that a two year old man might abandon any hope of a future for a strange pack, a wicked man, and the very real possibility he would not survive until spring. Kai was young and he was large, but he lacked experience and he lacked the skills that belonged in places of battle and bloodshed. He was certain anyone could see this in him, but he would do his best to hide that fact, he would train, and he would gain back his weight and make himself known and feared.

“Yes sir,” the sandy gray wolf answered, his voice gaining confidence. Regardless of whatever madness lay in the man before him (and Kai had never seen such a thing, and knew only what he was facing was a man with a great purpose before him). His eyes darkened, and his ears dared to lift only slightly, to follow the sound of the man’s powerful voice. “I swear to you I will do so.” He had not asked for the name of his potential new home, not asked the man’s name (and oh he had no intention of doing so, for fear of what might come from it) and was blindly devoting himself to following a stranger that had given him nothing except the promise of greatness and the peculiar sense that perhaps, finally, he would be able to find himself welcomed instead of scorned, and gain fame and power at once.

Few young souls understood exactly how far they could walk beyond the clearly marked lines. Haku behaved as his did for several reasons and one of these was to see whether or not he could find proper loyalty and a passable self control within the young souls that so suddenly had started to gather close to Dahlia’s borders. There was no open emotion that spoke of anger or the usual arrogance as his cold eyes burned on the younger creature placed in front of him. Only submission and surrender and this pleased him. It was in times like these that he needed such pieces on the board where the battle was to be played out. He was in dire need of pawns and by some wicked coincidence they were showing up on Dahlia’s marked borders one after one with the intention to follow their leader through fire and water and what was worse. He needed to sacrifice their lives for greater chaos. He needed to fulfil his own dreams in order to find absolution when he eventually was to cross over to the other side as well.

Confidence was still present in the youngster’s voice as he replied to the questions he had asked. Haku wondered about the nature of such blind devotion on first sight. It was not a common thing and he knew not truly what to make of it. There were no questions rising up before him, only reassurances that this young soul would follow his lead. Haku did not like to question such things – he rather just accept it at the spot and drain it for use until ready to be tossed to the side, but these were dangerous times. Although the other packs were not allies, there were some in the hybrid pack that carried grudges for the treatment of Svara that had been so well deserved. He knew not the extent of their emotions because Haku had never openly touched the doggish pack. Svara had happened before it had gathered and though Haku knew that the doggish man that now called himself a king in the pack of strays had disliked the treatment of the female that had later been made into sub-leader of the pack, he did not expect any pack to lash out.

Inferni had been a thorn in most pack’s paw at least once or twice. It happened again now, that unwanted thoughts started to slip into his conscious mind and encourage paranoia. ”Then welcome to Dahlia de Mai.” he now announced, slowing down his own pace and wondering why chaos wanted to reside inside a head that was supposed to be cold and calculating. Haku was not a mastermind. He was more in the feral division and wanted to relive the days of glory before the wolfen mind had developed into more of a consciousness similar to the deceased human kind. There were no laws in his world. ”I am Haku, your alpha and you will kill for me.” This was no question, just a fact that the young male here needed to be aware of before he crossed the invisible boundaries and made himself a part of the foolishly named pack. How strange that the pack of flowers would be so intent to see blood.

There was no room for question or doubt in this world. Kai was a subordinate, and he knew his place as certainly as he knew he might not survive this winter. He had seen cowardice and he had seen weakness in those who had led above him. He could not allow such things to stand. The reason he did not question and did not think to do so was apparent—he saw a man before him stronger and more powerful then any he had seen before. His place was not to lead, it was to follow, and he would follow with the blind devotion of every ancestor before him who had found an alpha and made them their king.

Slowly, Kai’s muscles flexed and his stomach lifted from the ground. He felt different, suddenly, as if he had been reborn. There was nothing to suggest this, but he knew, certainly, that the world was changing. His blue eyes shifted, turning to face the man before him. They did not rise beyond his face, focusing instead on those terrible teeth that showed themselves now and again as if an ocean was fighting to reveal itself. Shifting his weight and inhaling the cold air, Kai nodded firmly once. “My name is Kai. I will do as you order, sir.” This seemed to please Haku, whom turned from him without a word and left, continuing along the borders. Kai sucked in air through his nose, opened his mouth, and smiled.

He would kill, and he would do so willingly. Whatever it took to make himself great.
