The bandages on her head were wound tight over her missing ear, and it ached terribly whenever she moved or spoke, and sometimes even when she used the muscles around her eyes on that side. Mew was alone in the room, now, not the living room but a different, separate part of this house she had lived in for a while now. She had asked to be alone for a while, and she had called for Alexey and Conor to come by yesterday. Of course, not called, not howled. The sound itself would probably make her pass out, if it rung in her skull when it felt like it was in a thousand pieces. Apparently, it was not in a thousand pieces, but her brain thought so anyway. Hanna said that the damage was not lethal, but it certainly felt lethal. The pain was sometimes unbearable, but today it was not so bad. Good timing, because if her message had reached her friend and her nephew, they should come here today at some point. This was why she was on her own — she didn't want Hanna to hear what she had to say. Mew owed her aunt so much that words were not enough to describe it, but this was the second time (or the third, even) that she had saved her from death. She had felt only relief the other times, but this time much heavier thoughts stalked her. What if she had died? It was not a constructive thought in itself, not to her, but to her children, it was. She needed to know that someone would care for them, if she should die. Given that she had just barely bested death so many times, always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the pack was at war with Inferni at the moment (or so she had learned), it wasn't really unneccessary either. But she did not want Hanna to care for them; she wanted them to stay in Dahlia de Mai. To ask that much of Hanna, to force her to stay here and abandon her AniWayan life to pick up the pieces of Mew's, was something she could not do. But Conor and Alexey were Dahlians, and Alexey had cared so much for the little two boys (and apparently she was caring for another litter of children), that Mew was certain. Alexey should be the one, if she was willing, of course. Conor had been called for a different reason altogether. She would not be able to teach him for a while, and so she had a gift for him instead; something he could sit and wonder over until she was well enough to teach him again. That is, if he still needed teaching, by that point!

The big book lay by her side, and she was propped up along the wall with some old pillows and bundles of clothing. She was not useless; she could walk a little and such, but it was very tiring. She did not like to been seen this way, but she trusted her dear friend, and she trusted Haku's son even if her baby brother was not the same. A sting of guilt remained in her heart, for she had not called for Emwe. She did not know if she could handle that many at once, but she could call him another day. Sometimes it was too much just to have her children around, even if they were on their best behavior, and even if sometimes all they did was lie still next to her. Mew was tired, that much was easy to see. But she was alive.

Sadface. ]: 300+

They had walked several miles in the snow just to be with her, answering the call with a sense of dread. Alexey had not spoken a word since their departure, preferring not to address the issue at hand. Had it been anyone else but Conor at her side, she probably would not have agreed to go. She knew the physical state Mew was in, and how hard this reunion was going to be. The Caregiver also knew, deep within her soul, that the Rosen’s sister had not called without reason. She had not laid eyes on her friend since the accident and now was the time to finally face her fears. Hanna had warned them that it wouldn’t be easy; silence was her own way of preparing herself for what was to come, good or bad. Hopefully, Conor would not take offence to her behavior.

But no amount of preparation could have made it less painful. The sight made her want to cry. This was her friend, a wonderful woman deserving the best in life, completely robbed of her autonomy. She had been dealt the worst possible hand in life. It was getting colder, as if her body had its own way of reacting to her pack mate’s suffering. The bloody bandages bound tightly around her head, shielding her beautiful face from the world, made her want to run. The cinnamon femme wanted to gaze into those cheery emerald eyes once more, to see the happiness that just weeks ago, had inhabited Mew Sadira. She ached with the realisation that her comrade might not make it out intact. The Acer half-closed her eyelids as pain ripped through her soul. There was no pretending, not today, she had always been honest with the woman; Alexey would not hide her sorrow this time. Emotions seeped through her every pore. Grief came first, clouding her vision with impending tears as one of her hands reached over to caress Mew’s once-flawless coat of ivory.

Oh, beautiful angel. What had they done to her? Even with the lightest of touches, the Koios girl could feel the bones so close beneath the surface. She wasn’t the right person to show support, not in times like these. Such a thing required strength and self-discipline, neither of which she possessed when faced with pain and suffering. Lexey didn’t trust herself to speak, knowing her voice would break if she attempted anything more. In the midst of her sadness, pure, undiluted rage began tugging at her heart. A few weeks ago, she had wanted nothing more than peace. But now, the Acer felt compelled to make Inferni pay for their crimes.

One of the things he loved about the woman next to him was the comfortable silence that sometimes fell in between them. These were sorrowful times and both of the canines had their heads full of thoughts. They did not need to speak unnecessary words just because they were in the presence of each other. It felt like she was a natural part of him; there was no need of pretending or need to make an effort to be anything. He could be himself fully in her presence and likewise for her. The only thing that set them apart was that lingering love that he could not push out of his heart. She would always be his everything and he knew this. There was no way of fighting it, but the fight to stay behind the invisible lines of their current relationship was always a struggle. They could never be anything but what they always had been and he just could not accept it. His brain did, for it saw logic and sense in her decision, but his heart went on and on with its burning passion. It hurt him, but they were no longer separated. Things would never be the same between them again, but at least they were no longer apart from each other.

Conor knew just as well as Alexey that Mew’s call had to mean something. He was already gently pushing silver threads of sorrow away from his thoughts. He was no longer the young child he had been and he could not bear the thought of showing weakness when he was rushed into a situation where he needed to be the strong one. Unlike Lexey the male had seen Mew. His grandaunt and he were the ones that had treated Mew. Although this should never have happened, Mew’s injuries had boosted Conor’s medical skills. With a mortally wounded patient and a teacher by his side he had watched and helped Susquehanna remove the metal piece out of Mew’s head. To think that this was just the start of the war was horrible. He thought he had seen enough yet he knew that he had seen nothing of what was to come. The thought wanted to rip him apart, but he had to be strong for all of them. Perhaps, as his father’s new fondness and trust grew, he could find a way to minimize the damage that would be inflicted.

They had arrived and the golden male granted his ivory aunt a faint, though sincere smile. Mew was one of the individuals that had shown him the path to happiness, and it was horrible to see her in this condition. He let Alexey move in first, let a hand softly touch the Koios’ latte back as he saw the silent pain rip through her. He wished he could comfort her, but knew there was no way. Alexey was not the only person in the room that wanted to cry, but Conor’s eyes were dry as he too reached for the white female. Violence was so ugly. A light cream hand settled on the ivory female’s shoulder for a moment before it fell away and he sat down next to his aunt’s sad and defeated form. ”You seem better, aunt Mew,” he said with a voice that could not exclude all the pain that he carried within. His words were true though. Seen from a healer’s point of view she was no longer on the definite path of certain death, but she was still so very weak.

Through the haze that followed her around she could smell them before they came. Her hearing was impaired, perhaps forever, but her nose worked, though sometimes strange scents entered it and lingered there, as if from another world. Eventually she could hear them nearing, too, and she opened her eyes and prepared herself as they entered the room. However, she had not expected the reaction of her friends. Conor stood silently; Mew had been told that he had helped her as well. By the time he let his hand rest for a moment on her shoulder and spoke, Alexey was already in tears, and Mew's own hands were lifted and held her friend's hands as they touched her skinny self as if she was leaving them forever. She smiled for a moment and her eyes searched for eye contact in alexey's face. Her voice was hoarse, because she was weary, but there was still some Mew left in it. "Don't cry, Alexey. I'm not quite dead yet." She would have chuckled, would have tried to ease the situation, for to her it was unbearable to have someone around her like this. But there was no strength in her for laughing, and so it would just have to be. Keeping her friend's hands in her own, though feebly, she continued to smile that weak smile at her for a moment before turning her attention onto Conor.

She smiled again, now, but as all her smiled were lately it was weak and not so broad as she would have liked. But whenever she tightened her jaw and eye muscles too tightly it felt as if her head would explode, and so she kept it to the smallest movements she possibly could. She could have not smiled, but there was a need in her to make sure they knew that she was glad that they had come, and so she smiled anyway. "Thank you Conor. I feel better, too." At least, she reckoned she did. She had not been conscious for a lot of the time apparently, and she did not know how many days ago it had happened. In fact, she remembered very little, though some scenes were still as sharp as if it happened just seconds ago. But she would not worry her head with this right now; there was always time for thinking later, when the visitors were gone. Her one hand released Alexey's hand and reached for Conor's. She wanted one hand in each. Giving her attention to Alexey again, she spoke now, slowly, but clearly. "I wanted to speak to you about something, both of you." Her gaze shifted and landed on her nephew now, before moving back to the female by her side. "I have one question to ask each of you, a favor, of sorts." Emerald greens studied their faces in turn, and she wondered what Alexey would do and say when Mew finally did say what she intended. As for Conor, she did not really have a favor to ask him, but a promise. She cared about him deeply, and felt a need to protect and help him along with whatever it might be he would ever need help with. He was too old for being parented now, and she knew that, but she had never helped him as a child and she would make up for it now.

Whee, fail. Sorry. Work is killing me. 300+ Libri, you still have the Conor/Emwe/Lexey thread to reply to.

The hardest thing about dealing with a close one’s pain and suffering, as she was beginning to notice, was feeling so ridiculously helpless through it all. How terrible it was, watching a woman who should’ve been crossing the happiest period of her life, wither away like the delicate flower she’d become. Alexey had dealt with death and heartache more than once, and in many different ways. But what had recently happened to Mew was the most unfortunate thing she’d ever witnessed. She’d nearly lost Conor at one point in time, but she had been granted the power to heal him. There had been hope. But now, as her golden-hued gaze fell on her once-teacher and great friend, Lexey feared that it was too late for hope.

Regardless of what she really thought, it was in her best interest to keep calm. If not for her personal sanity, then for the other two pack mates at her side. Mew’s chiding comment, however light-hearted it was meant to be, sent a pang of guilt reverberating through her body. The impact was just as physical as it was emotional. A short intake of breath, followed by a hiccup of sorts, was her way of keeping herself from spiralling out of control. Mew’s hands possessed a calming effect of sorts, strong enough to temporarily numb the pain. For this reason, the Caregiver was able to finally focus on the topic at hand, brought forth by the older femme.

Although the favor she spoke of had yet to be revealed, Alexey knew that it would not be an issue. Mew Sadira was not an unreasonable woman, this she knew. Whatever deed she was currently in the process of requesting, the Koios girl would fulfill without hesitation. Conor’s opinion wasn’t even taken into consideration, for she knew that they shared the similar (of not the same) thoughts on the subject. “What is it?”

Whoops, I had forgotten all about that thread. Someone has archived it, but I'll find it and reopen it Smile

It seemed like the young male was far more optimistic than the gentle soul next to him. Violet eyes took in Alexey’s emotional struggle with disguised sadness. He could easily see when the woman was upset and he ached to put his arms around her and promise that everything would be okay. Though they tried, things were not entirely the same after what had happened when he had ruined their relationship by giving his first kiss away to her. He turned his gaze away from the latte coated council member and let his eyes discover dust motes and traces of gravel on the floor. He nodded quietly and was satisfied with his aunt’s response to his statement, though he wondered whether or not it was true. He had chosen to believe – she was conscious and could even sit up. Now, Conor did not know a lot, but he had read a variety of written human knowledge and knew that Mew should have been dead. She had been so lucky. This could only end well.

Ears moved towards his gold and cinnamon coated skull when his aunt’s voice spoke to both of the visitors. He did not like the sound of it, though he could not anticipate the nature of it. People had asked for favours in the past and would definitely do it again in the future, so his eyes merely rose to the white form to show that she had his full attention. Of course he would do whatever the woman asked of him if it was in his power.

Okay so I just can't post these sad things with Mew anymore because.. well she's dead :/ Fade and close here, does this work for you guys?
The book is Darwin's "Origin of the Species"

Alexey inquired, though she didn't seem soothed by what Mew had said; at least not by much. Conor said nothing, but it was as if the two were together about it, even if they expressed it differently. Mew smiled and was still for a moment, trying to figure out a way to say these things. Alexey probably would not like it, and already Mew felt bad. It wasn't as if she was going to die anytime soon, Hanna and Conor had seen to that, but Alexey was already a substitute mother in many ways and for many pups; Mew would hate to think it would be another burden on her shoulders. But, she had decided that it was only Alexey and her nephews she could trust with these, once she had ruled Hanna out of the equation. Hanna lived in AniWaya, but Mew wanted the children in Dahlia de Mai; it was that easy. "Alexey; I would trust you with anything, and you are clearly my best friend in the world." She paused; this was already sounding like some very formal occasion, as if she was holding a speech. She did not like that, and shook her head as if to shake off this sensation. "This is the third time I've almost died, but now I have children to take care of, and no mate. We're at war, too. If I should die sometime when they're still young, would you take care of them?" Her face was apologetic, but at the same time it tried to soothe the female, anticipating the feelings that might come from hearing such words. In truth, Alexey was the best friend Mew had ever had, and now she felt horrible for saying these things. But everything was different now, and she could not ignore the responsibilities she had as a mother.

Her gaze moved to Conor, and now she smiled instead. This subject was much nicer. "Conor; my favourite student?" Oh now she was being so formal and weird again. Resisting the urge to shake her head a little once more, she just continued with a smile as if she hadn't been so awkward. "You're such a good reader now, and I was hoping you'd accept something from me." She merely pointed towards the corner of the room, not wanting to get up. In fact, she wasn't even allowed to get up, so that math was easy. "There's a big weird book in the corner, about all sorts of animals. It was human idea that in time, everything develops into something better." She'd read parts of the book, and though one could see the theory in a wholly different perspective, that was the conclusion she'd drawn. Something always changed, and when it did, it changed into something better, stronger, more beautiful. The young male liked to read, and even if he didn't like the book he now owned it. And that was that. "You don't have to read it unless you want to. I just thought it was interesting." She smiled, wearily now, and let her head sink back a little. Her neck strained whenever she wanted to keep her head up, and now it was giving her a headache.
