It was hard for the Church female to now push the entire litter away from her mind. But just meeting Rio brought them back to life for her. It was harsh to think, and she would likely never admit it, but those pups had been lost to her when she found out about them. Lost to her life, dead in a sense. It had been so hard on her, and she had been younger then too. Now, a bit older and more experienced in the ways of life Mati found that the differences could be made and the folly's of the parents of this sweet girl could be over-looked if not forgotten. The rest, they lived more now in her mind and she wondered about them more after getting to know her. Her heart was not big enough to accept them all yet, but being here with her made the Dreamer happy in a way she never thought she would be.

Mati opened her vibrant gaze and looked at the face of the black coated fey, she had closed her eyes. She waited, watching as the other's form trembled slightly. The moments passed, and then the transformation occurred. The older female was patient, standing to the side as Rio grew into the slender werewolf that her tainted blood designed. When it was completed, Mati stood tense in case she was uneasy on her new limbs. She was cautious, slow in her movements but Mati remembered that well. She looked at the face of the smiling girl, still shorter but now just below her eye level. She smiled, and began to say a word of congratulation. But before the word could be managed Rio had flung her arm around her larger steadier form. Mati instantly wrapped an arm around her in case they both were to fell. Your welcome Rio. was all she could manage. This day had been quiet the surprise.

Mati was patient throughout the change, though Rio was unaware of how much time had actually passed. She knew that her sister was there for her when her uncertain steps took her into an embrace with the female, and that the strong arms steadied her. She hadn't thought of how different it would be to walk on two legs. Her weight was balanced much differently, and she certainly would have slipped and fallen without the assistance. Bashful eyes turned upward to take in the other's expression, as Rio worried she had taken her sister by surprise with everything she had asked of her. Her small ears fell back slightly to express her worry — she had risked her acceptance from Mati, she realized with a swoop of emotion, though in her mind it was not so many words. Perhaps she should have taken this problem to Xeris or Ehno, the next time he came to Phoenix Valley for a visit.

Mati's face was much more defined with this new closeness. It seemed exotic and very becoming. The copper-furred werewolf did not show any displeasure, none at all, so Rio's smile found its place once more. This was very nice of you, she said softly, slowly pulling away and again righting herself when the movement threw her off balance. The Marino child was reluctant to let go. The warmth of wrapping her arms around someone she cared for was irresistible, like nothing she had ever felt before. She did not know what to do with her fingers, her hands, and they hung uselessly at her sides for a moment until she held her hands together and absently wound and unwound her fingers. Shimmering eyes found Mati's once more, a question slipping from her mind. What should I do? she asked, looking down at her hands. Now that she had discovered this new form for her body, she was full of longing to do something with it.

She hadn’t expected this, not at the least. Mati had sort of been minding her own business, as she came back from the city with supplies. Her mind was so filled with concerns about her relationship with Cambria that she had not foreseen anything exciting or new happening until that was solved. But, her life had taken a slight turn in meeting Rio, and it was a pleasant distraction. Slowly she was learning what she always believed in, that offspring should never be looked down upon for the mistake of their parents. She had felt it true ever since she had learned about her own sire, but even if she believed in it the pain made it hard.

Lets go for a walk. She said to answer the girls question, even if it wasn’t completely directed to her. It was easy to do so with someone to help hold you up. Mati remembered that. With one hand she picked up the bag that she had been carrying with the supplies that she needed and with the other she wrapped her arm around Rio’s waist to help steady her. Then, slowly and with the other female beside her she took a step and readied herself for the one Rio needed to take to keep their hips inline.

Rio remained unaware of her mother's questionable past. Naniko had been absent too frequently with her pack duties to give any of the answers that her daughter desired, and she was too afraid to ask anyway. Mama was busy with important things — the sable girl was old enough to realize that there was something dark about the birth of her older half-siblings, and this feeling deterred her from bothering her mother, afraid to upset her unnecessarily. The child had grown accustomed to the idea that there was no time for her in her mother's life, as it had been the way of her own life since her first memory. Sometimes she wished that her absent dam was more like Xeris, who seemed to have all the time in the world for her babies. Perhaps Naniko had spent precious little time with Mati, too. Rio wondered if the bronze-furred woman would understand the occasional desire for a real mother.

A walk sounded marvelous, and behind her thin frame Rio's long tail swung to and fro. Yes! she said, stumbling in her excitement. It was more difficult than she'd expected to keep her balance; it seemed much easier to loose her footing with only two paws touching earth. Fortunately, Mati's free arm was around her waist to keep her from falling. She lifted her arm to grasp the woman's shoulder with a weak grip, but this would undoubtedly help her keep upright. Periwinkle eyes carefully noted the way the older fey carried herself so that she might emulate. Before she tried to do so, she grew wide-eyed, suddenly worried about how long she had been away from Phoenix Valley. She realized that she'd lost track of time in the circumstances that had arisen, but there was no reason to make her nanny worry. Is it okay if we go toward my home? As she spoke, the child carefully stepped forward, allowing her body to guide itself. A few unsteady steps later, she could walk slowly, and gave a soft squeak of delight. This isn't so bad, she said, glancing up at her sister for approval.

sorry for the wait, maybe we could end this soon?

Though it was not what many other’s had, Mati was glad that her family had been a bit unconventional. Her second mother had never gone anywhere and she loved her brother, and would always be close to him. Even though Haven lived in a different pack he had not ventured off like her other siblings. But that was what wolves did. Mati was still sad that they were gone, but she did not hold them responsible for the well being of any creature. An though now she did not need Naniko, there had been a time in which she did and thus Mati held the grudge and could not let go.

She wanted things to be different for Rio, and even if there was so much that lived between them that the other was so unaware of Mati still wished for the best. And so the tall Dreamer held tight to her new sister, ready when she was. Her new legs would need a few steps to get acquainted with them, but the brown wolf was confident that it shouldn’t take anything more then that.

Of course Mati responded. She had been thinking that it was best of the other was getting along home. The sun was low, and though it had not begun its final decent Mati had come to worry a bit that Rio was going to be marching home in the dark and alone. At least now, they would be together. They took the steps together, and Rio’s excitement was easily contagious. See, it isn’t at all Mati held her a bit easier, giving the Marino girl a little bit of room to get the correct feeling for her new balance.

Rio knew what it was like to have a family that wasn't quite normal. Along with her mothers infrequent appearances, her father lived in Crimson Dreams to the south of her home. She saw him as often as she could — she loved her father — but he wasn't always there when she needed him. She understood that he had other family to attend to, but she still missed him. In her time on Earth she'd learned to rely on one wolf in the world, Xeris. She was not her mother by blood, but in Rio's eyes she was more of a mothering figure than Naniko had ever been. The latter was like a distant angel whose love was always above her reach.

Since hearing Mati's words about the dangers of the world, Rio was acutely aware of the growing shadows. Without her sister by her side, she knew she would have been frightened through the entire walk home. Thank you, Mati she said, giving her sister's waist a very weak by well-meant squeeze. Already she felt love for the kind young woman. Phoenix Valley was not far, and Rio knew that she would feel sadness once she parted with Mati. Until then, though, the coming night couldn't scare her — indeed, it was beautiful with its near dusk vibrancy.
