Life had changed much for Amy. She was trading directly with people just as she had wanted, and punishing people as she wished. Her name was traveling through the land, and respect for her, not just her family, was growing. One of her greatest accomplishments though, wasn't in the lands she'd chosen to wander. Rather, it was to the west, a small tribe of about fifty canines. They were fierce, a warrior tribe that needed trade to survive. It had been easy for her to take control, to make her wants and ways known. They knew the meaning of her marks, though the only one close to being marked as a chose one was the wolf she left in charge while she traded. The shaman, feeling her demonic nature, camped at the edge, haunted by the horrible visions that possessed him whenever Amy passed by.

They called her a goddess, a walking deity. Others called her what she was, a demon in disguise. Both sides were right, and both were completely wrong. Amy simply was, and she reveled in the power she held. It was a bit unsatisfactory, without the deaths. She had her other land for that though, and fought for each trade triumph there eagerly. Now she held both sides of the coin, the freedom of the trader and the power of the empress she once was, though on a much smaller scale. Now she was coming to check on them. She hoped they had done well with their trade. If not, well, her puppet knew better than to deal out punishments without her.

North America—the wild continent, full of barbarians or full of true wolves depending on who was asked. No matter what everyone else claimed, however, the Eurasian wolf found it intellectually and instinctually stimulating. He lived almost like a beast when it amused him, hunting on all fours and passing off for a juvenile-minded but normal wolf until he stopped to chat with a squirrel in a tree. Other days, he returned to the little hovel tucked into the woods, taking a lazy day or venturing back into Freetown to pick up women and wares. He was without responsibility here, in possession of enough goods to trade if something caught his fancy, but with more land to hunt in than there had been in the more bustling Europe, he did not have to rely on books and knickknacks to make a living.

Today—like most days recently—Levent slept in until past noon. It was about this hour that Wilson rose from his catnap, having been busy hunting and exploring in the morn, and leaped down from the nearest shelf onto the wolf’s chest. As the man startled awake, the tomcat slipped into the crook between chin and shoulder, curled up purring in his own special greeting.

“Ahhh…iyi günler, arkadaş.”

The Turkish merchant pushed the cat lightly off him then stood, stretching his arms and taking in the sunlight through the small dirty windows. It wasn’t the best home they could have chosen for themselves, but it had been rat-infested enough for any other passersby to immediately lose interest. Now it was free and rat-free, and Wilson was at a healthy weight.

“Do you want to go for a run today?” Levent asked, grinning as he tied the orange and yellow slashed cloth around his head. When he leaned down to the feline’s level on the mattress, the tom batted at the blue strip hanging from the cloth then meowed an affirmative.

The weather was nice, the sun shining despite the past few days being generally overcast and depressing. The air was cool and crisp, and Levent was shifted down into his four-legged shape. A pouch fashioned to be worn in all of his forms held his throwing knives as well as a few petty rings—payment in case brigands attacked him on the road. It was best to have something to trade your life for, as long as fighting back didn’t work first.

The wolf galloped through the wilds west of Freetown, tail waving behind him, tongue lolling from his jaws. Sprinting beside him was the white cat; and together they made about the strangest pair that anyone had ever seen. Occasionally, the canine would have to slow his pace, as he was built more for endurance than his small friend, but they made good progress through sparse trees and fields and hills. They passed some rural houses and saw a broken raised highway in the distance. They walked and ran until it was evening, and Levent had to decide whether to turn around or try to find somewhere habitable for the night.

Before that, however, the male was thirsty. He wandered in the direction of a murmuring stream, dipping his head to drink. Wilson settled down on the bank beside him and stared into the water, perhaps to look for fish—and with a swipe of his paw sent some of the water at his friend. Levent shifted his paw to keep his headband—the cloth now wrapped around an ankle—from getting wet and growled playfully before moving further downstream.

As he lapped water into his dry mouth, the dark-saddled wolf allowed his mind to drift. There were many possibilities here, but it was Nova Scotia he really needed to explore—the eastern peninsula where many packs of many different customs were said to be gathered. If it didn’t turn out to be as interesting as he had hoped it would be, he could head further out west, or north, or south—hell, there was an entire continent for him to explore. The carefree thought made him smile before he happened to glance upwards at a shape bounding through the stream.

Dikkat! Levent hurled the word at his friend then hurled himself into the body of the wolf that had been leaping toward Wilson. He rammed his head and shoulders into the other’s side, knocking them down into the water. The wolf recovered and flipped back onto all fours, spinning around, ears pinned back and nasty teeth bared.

And then the wolf’s eyes widened in terror, fixating on one place: Levent’s shoulder and the deep bite scar there. It froze, at a complete loss for what to do, and Lev could only narrow his eyes and tilt his head in confusion. Bu ne… he murmured, but then Wilson, tail puffed up like a bottlebrush, scrambled toward him and trembled between his forelegs. He lowered his head to lick the tom between the ears then stared once more at the frozen wolf.

The wolf knew what the mark meant. It was something none of the tribe were worthy to possess, a mark only given to the chosen of the goddess. And he had attacked him. Cowering he tried to think of how to fix his mistake. His ears twitched as the sound of a horse and wagon approached. There was no time. She was here. He muttered in the native tongue, asking for forgiveness, before he twisted around and bit into his own stomach, dying. It was better to kill himself than fall into her hands when she was angry.

Reaching the stream Amy watched in surprise as one of her followers committed suicide. What could he have possibly done to make that an option? She looked up, spotting Levent standing across the stream. A wide smile spread, her tail wagging. So that's why. He'd insulted her chosen one. Leaving the horse's head she stepped over to where he was. Didn't expect to see you here. Welcome. Come to the tribe with me? They're a bit primitive, but good folk. Amy was burning to ask why he'd left Europe and the umbrella of her protection, but bit her tongue. All in good time.

Levent stood stiffly over his friend, staring across at the wolf that looked even more startled than he was. It might have been smarter to grab the cat and run, but confusion leaked from his mind throughout his body, rooting him to the spot. As the stranger’s ears twitched, Wilson shifted underneath the short blue-eyed wolf, and that combined with a muttered foreign plea was the only warning that the pair received before the wolf killed itself.

Immediately, the Turkish man recoiled, shifting shape as he did so. His bones crackled and lengthened, and the paws that had been planted firmly on either side of Wilson now held the tomcat close to his chest. As he embraced his friend defensively, he turned sharply away from the sight of blood and entrails welling slowly from the gashed stomach of their assailant.

Neden? Levent asked himself under his breath, but then his pale eyes fell upon a familiar face and widened.

The white cat nestled tight against the man, his face buried in the creamy fur of his chest, recognized the new tension in the merchant’s body and finally twisted to follow his gaze. His fur bristled immediately, his ears flattening tight against his head, but he was too frightened to even let out a hiss.

“Amy,” Levent said breathlessly. He stood, dark hair disheveled, the cloth that usually tamed it hanging from his wrist, and clutched Wilson wordlessly when the feline began to squirm as if to leap and take action there and then. He could not quite say that he was happy to see her, as there was hardly any room for emotions besides shock at this point, but any relief upon seeing the successful woman melted away when she grinned and greeted him—as if they hadn’t both just seen a wolf choose death for no apparent reason, or no reason apparent to him.

Siktir, the brown wolf spat out when she spoke casually to him. No—he was not going to ignore the carcass that had fallen into the water. “What is this all about?” He threw an arm back to point at the blood. It was a demand, and perhaps the corpse would have been even more shocked to see the man demand something from Amy, but Levent was a man who did not bow genuinely to anyone. He had been able to treat the woman as an equal back in Europe, and so he called for answers then.

Amy pulled back slightly as Levent snapped at her, demanding answers. Her ears twitched in confusion. She was happy to see him, yet he remained more focused on the corpse. Not something she'd expected from one asking for things beyond the norm. Amy thought he would be used to such dark deaths. Shrugging her shoulders she crossed her arms as she gazed at the body. He did something wrong, so punished himself for it before his goddess could. Amy didn't tell him who the goddess was, not wanting to put them on uneven grounds, or an even worse situation.

Her eyes moved to the cat, a bundle of tension in Levent's arms. I see you still have that cat. Please, don't let the death disturb you. Like I said, they're very primitive. Extremely devout in their beliefs. Amy gestured at the dead body helplessly. She couldn't undo what had been done. True, she would have cut off his fingers, neutered him, and removed his tongue for the price, but that was better than dead. At least in Amy's opinion. He could have served as an example. Come back with me. I'm sure you're shocked from such a sight. it wasn't a guess, Amy could see that. Still, it was more courteous that way.

Levent was truly capable of horrible things. He could stoop to any level—theft, murder, betrayal—without remorse. However, even the worst of his actions would carry more than a hint of desperation behind them. He was perhaps not evil in the true sense of the word; those evil enough to destroy others for no means other than enjoyment were in a tier above him. He was merely a coward, a coward willing to make a pact with the worst of demons to attain his goal, to hide from the worst fear of his low and pathetic life.

If the god had commanded it, he may have torn his claws through the soft belly of the wolf and dragged out the entrails as an offer of sacrifice. But this random violence was something that startled him in his previously contented mind, jerked him out of the gentle daydreams that paraded through his thoughts on lazy days.

Washed-out blue eyes flickered to the woman’s brown ones, and though they were demanding, they sought comfort as well. When the blonde woman explained the wolf’s motives, his tensed posture loosened slightly, even though her tone was more detached than most canines’ would be when discussing a fresh suicide.

Religion he could understand. And so he nodded dumbly to everything she said, letting the oddly familiar sound of her voice carry him out of his shock. Şanssız kimse,” he murmured, glancing once more at the corpse before walking toward the woman. With that action, and with eyes set once more upon hers with a small smile forming on his lips, he dismissed his shock and the blood washed away by the stream.

“Sizi tekrar görmek çok güzel,” Levent breathed, leaning forward and hoping to give her a kiss on the cheek in greeting. It was a difficult feat with the cat in his arms, but Wilson luckily remained completely still and without protest. Grinning, he repeated his words in English. “Nice to see you again. It looks like you found your dreamland, yeah?”

Amy relaxed as he accepted her explanation, and came to her for comfort. She allowed the kiss on the cheek, nuzzling him affectionately before pulling away. Her eyes shone as he mentioned her dreamland, knowing that he understood. Yes. I took your advice, and set out on my own. There's so much to do here, so many people to meet, so many to trade with, so many challenges that Europe denied me. Her tail wagged, ears erect as she spoke. Her whole being glowed with happiness. She was living her dream at last, and couldn't be happier. Having someone to share it with made her small bit of paradise even better.

Smiling happily she walked over to the wagon. Life's been busy here. I'm working on setting up trade connections with each of the packs, becoming their primary source of supplies. Some are more difficult of course, set in their ways. Change isn't always welcome, after all. They'll come around though, I'm sure of it. Amy reached the wagon and gestured to it grandly. My traveling home. Hadley had been sneaking a snooze behind the wheel of the wagon, and jumped up guiltily at the introduction. Amy looked at him sharply, and his tail tucked between his legs as he backed away, moving out of sight. That was better. Everything most canines could want. Of course, I'm open to requests. You name it, I can deliver it, from the finest furs of the world to a new born pup.

She glanced over at Levent, wanting to see if he was enjoying the show as much as she was. Amy truly loved her life here, even with the rage that gnawed inside her. She had so many toys to play with it was unbelievable, and a seemingly endless supply of them as well, always different reactions and interactions. Walking up to the head of the horse Amy clicked sharply, and the wagon began moving. Enough of that though. We're close to the tribe. You can rest there, and we'll have a feast. You'll have to tell me all about your travels. Amy smiled widely at him, tail wagging.

Levent was aware of the dark promises behind the blonde woman’s smiles, but the depths of cruelty she was capable of—as well as the fear she had instilled in the tribe wolf who’d committed suicide—was beyond him. When she drew back from nuzzling him, her brown eyes brightening, he only saw a lovely woman and friend who had found the dream she’d been pursuing. And it made his heart happy, even more now because she was a pillar of familiarity and comfort after the violence he had witnessed. His smile was wide and loose as she gladly described how wonderful the land was, and his dark-tipped tail played behind him. Duyduğuma çok memnunum.

Wilson pawed at his chest, and he loosened his grip on the cat to allow him to clamber onto his shoulders, balancing precariously. Yellow eyes fixed without blinking on Amy as the white tail dangled down, flicking against his friend’s creamy-colored chest—as if ready to fend off any hand that would come near him. But he was quiet, and Levent was grateful for that. After his first rendezvous with the woman, his best friend had refused to speak to him for at least a week—unless it was to scold him furiously for being foolish or berate him until he took up the trade routes again. It wasn’t the first time they’d had a falling-out, and it probably wouldn’t be the last, but the violence in the cat’s small body had scared Levent.

“I heard much about this place,” the Turkish wolf murmured, gesturing around at the wilderness passing by as they walked toward the wagon, “and of the many packs that live near her. Nova Scotia, right?” When those on the ship hadn’t been talking about Freetown, they had been jabbering on and on about the infamous packs. It turned out that more than a few Europeans had settled there, including a few prominent Italian and Russian families. The ties that could exist between a small peninsula and the landscape of Eurasia astounded Levent, and he hoped to forge his own—after all, there was no going back. Even thinking about boarding the boat once again, about hearing the wash and roar of the sea as his world rose and fell and rocked with the waves, made him sick. “Perhaps one day I can come with you to your new trade route,” he offered with a lazy and playful smile. “Unless I’d be competition.” Though he seriously doubted he would be operating as efficiently as he had back home. He could certainly dazzle the locals with some of the goods he had brought with him, but those would only last so long before he had to adapt to their ways to survive.

Levent stopped and chuckled as she indicated the wagon. He paused and put his hands on his hips, leaning back slightly as if to better take in all of it. Muhteşem! he laughed, cheeks creasing in another broad and theatrical grin as he came closer to it. Something sidled behind the wagon at that moment, but even as his pale eyes darted to catch the shadow disappearing, he put it back out of his mind. He doubted a woman like Amy would cluelessly let thieves near the place; and he wasn’t in a good position to be chasing troublemakers at any rate. Wilson would go flying from his shoulders if he tried to fight, and his body would likely betray him, still a tad shaky after watching the tribe wolf rip into his own stomach.

“Few can boast that,” the brown-furred man remarked. “Your name must ring throughout the lands here! Not a lot of traveling merchants, from what I hear; most luperci have to walk to Freetown to get their wares.” He had seen several folk pass through, either dropping off or picking up trinkets and carpentry and pelts and livestock. He’d thought about getting a horse for himself, as that would make the traveling business much easier, but after chatting with those in the pens, he hadn’t really found any that stood out. He didn’t want to make the mistake of giving the fur off his back to purchase one of the animals again, either.

He smiled again when he glanced at her then walked just off to the side and behind her as she ordered the horse to walk. The urge to talk to the wagon-puller was smothered as the creamy-furred dog addressed him, and he whistled. “A feast sounds great, I’m not gonna lie. I might lie about my travels, though—I’m afraid it wouldn’t make for an interesting story otherwise.” His tail wagged in amusement, and shoulders lifted in a shrug: one bearing her mark, the other covered by the pouch.

A silly grin broke across Amy's face, a flash of who she was before she was devoured in darkness. Even that slight bit of innocence held the stain though. Without her mask on the demon inside her peeked out with cold eyes. Always calculating Amy measured the worth of introducing Levent to her trade route compared to the threat he held if he ever chose to turn against her. Yes, he was a seeker of immortality. That didn't mean he wouldn't turn on her, simply that she knew what buttons to push to keep herself from being completely trampled.

The cool mask slipped back into place, nice and polite. Showing you the route would be a lot of fun. She laughed lightly at his words as the tribe pulled into view. It was a rough settlement, some places scraped out into den like their ancestors, others in rough wooden huts. There was nary a canine to be seen though. Frowning Amy pulled her wagon off to the side. She tied it up and walked further in, leaving Hadley to stand guard. As she went further in a noise reached her ears. Shouting, and the sound of footsteps. Rounding one more corner Amy snarled. It was the shaman, preaching against her again. As she entered the clearing he backed up, moaning slightly as the demonic visions came again, always accompanied by her dark presence. Amy didn't actually know she was the cause, simply that her presence made the spiritual uncomfortable. Sighing she watched him shriek, yelling that a demon walked among them, harvesting their souls.

Something shifted in the creamy-furred woman’s face for a moment, a shift of her grin that made the brown wolf smile back at her. It was moments like these when he wondered who the true Amy was: the smiling woman who enjoyed his company, the dark streak that surged with bloodlust as when she’d nearly taken off his arm in bed, or the merchant looking for her own prosperity. It was a question he could not answer—probably because he could hardly answer it when it pertained to himself.

Levent wagged his tail at mention of the route, looking forward to that day. He was ready to immerse himself in the culture of this place, whatever that meant, and see if he truly could make a living here without conforming entirely. More than anything, he wondered if the answer to his most precious question lay in the realm of ’Souls…

The settlement came into view, and the Turkish man quickly slipped the cloth from his wrist and tied it up around his head like usual to contain his dark, messy hair. The blue strip hung into his face until he twisted the whole band to adjust it, smirking faintly at that and the fact that Wilson was having a difficult time balancing on his shoulders with the constant movement. However, the cat refused to land on the ground, perhaps too anxious about the new sights; not that Lev could blame him for that, especially after the earlier attack. His fur fluffed up slightly in worry, but he kept his face smooth as he looked around at the huts and dens: seemingly abandoned.

Giving the cart horse one last glance, the merchant followed quietly after Amy, his ears lowering when he the dog moved quickly and unexpectedly: bursting into a clearing where one of the tribe wolves was crying out. Not all of the words were understood by Levent, breathlessly coming to stand next to Amy, but they didn’t sound nice.

“Is there—is there something I could do?” the brown-furred man asked uncertainly, his pale eyes flicking to her. He wasn’t sure if the shaman was having some sort of fit or if this was something Amy was used to. The absence of the others bothered him, though, only helped by Wilson standing vigil on his shoulder, scanning the area carefully.

The tribe members had luckily made themselves scarce. If Amy had found them listening to the shaman there would have been a blood bath. Instead they were shunning him, only the occasional glimmer of eyes in the tents visible. Amy couldn't get any closer to him without making the fit worse, unfortunately, something that just strengthened the idea that she was a demon. Only a demon would affect their precious shaman so poorly after all. Amy didn't mind being thought of as a demon, it simply made them more likely to rebel than when facing a goddess. After all, in their cultures demons could be killed. It was best to keep those attempts from happening.

Hearing his offer Amy turned and nodded at Levent. Yes please. It seems he's sensed my presence, and if I get closer I'm afraid it'll get much...worse. Could you escort him to the outskirts? It was such a nuisance not killing him, but Amy didn't have the time to deal with the tribe full time, so she had to leave the structure intact or deal with it collapsing when she left to trade, much like her previous European empire was sure to have done by now. Didn't mean they wouldn't still honor her wishes, it just had no support without her there. Utter chaos. Exactly what she was trying to avoid with this tribe.

The short brown-furred man continued to stand uncertainly, listening to the shaman mutter words before they rose upward in a wailing crescendo and settled down again into the lower ranges of his going-hoarse voice. It was disturbing, but part of it reached out to grab the merchant’s heart in its trembling fingers. He thought of demons and bargains and fear and sin and death, and his pupils dilated until the blues of his eyes appeared a thin rim, the eclipse of an icy sun. He shuddered and quickly shook his head, jerking out of it when the woman addressed his uncertain question—or perhaps he’d come to when the feline on his shoulder had nipped his ear. The concern in Wilson was tangible, his aura changing the very air, and so with a glance at his small companion, he obeyed the woman’s request.

Leaving Amy to go somewhere else or do whatever she needed to make this go smoothly, the Turkish wolf walked slowly and carefully toward the shaman and crouched at his level. The tribal wolf spooked and began to babble something new altogether, but at the sight of a face that was not a demon’s, he relaxed very slightly. Wilson, curling up on the scarred shoulder, probably helped his nerves.

Tamam olacaktır, the man breathed in Turkish. He was sure that the tribe could speak and comprehend English since Amy had such apparent influence over them, but the words sounded so much more sincere in his own tongue. He spoke as soothingly as he could as he offered the shaman a hand and drew him to his feet, his palm tingling unexpectedly though he wrote it off as the trembling of the other wolf.

Benimle gelin,” Levent urged, and he escorted the man outside of the clearing. As he stood surrounded by the dens, tents, and huts, he grew a little more uncertain and wondered if he would be ambushed as soon as he left the midst settlement. A quiet but inquisitive mew escaped the canine’s lips as his tail twitched, and Wilson circled around neatly on his shoulder, ears perked and yellow eyes sweeping the area. He meowed back, communicating that he could see the tribe wolves and that they were no threat. Lev nodded, and went on.

He was not totally certain where he was to go, but he led the shaman in a direction away from the wagon, sure that Amy would not want her things compromised in case this event turned out badly. He still muttered comforting words, both in Turkish and English, and paused once he was amongst the trees. From there, he released his grip on the man and bowed his head. Burada kalır ve güvenli olacak,” he said quietly, and although those words could potentially prove a lie, the shaman seemed to accept them. He worriedly rubbed his scabbed arms and watched the merchant carefully as he walked back into the settlement.

“Do you want to explain?” Levent asked, his tone light as he found her. He had waited to pass judgment on the woman, though it would be best for him to know what was going on here—from the suicide victim to the screaming shaman of the tribe. However, his words held no authority over her actions, and he would be quiet if she was. The man did not feel like he would be in danger if he was in the dark…

At least not yet.

As Levent escorted the shaman away Amy turned and called out. Come out now! We have work to do! The wolves came out of the buildings, bracing themselves for punishment. Amy was a bit occupied for that. The temporary leader stepped forward, the slashing claw marks on his arm marking his worth. He prepared to give the usual spiel about the going ons in the tribe, but Amy shook her head. As much as she needed to hear that, Amy could deal with this later. We'll discuss business in a few days. Right now we have a very important guest. His name's Levent Kartal, and I picked him as one worthy of my mark. To insult him is to risk punishment of the highest sort. Now please, start preparing a feast for tonight.

The wolves looked around, slightly confused, but followed her orders. They broke up and began their work, Amy leaning against a pole to wait for Levent's return. Of course he had questions returning. Sighing Amy shook her head. He was polite about it, but she still felt the need to respond for the sake of politeness. He can sense stuff like auras and the like. Connected with the other world. Problem is I am too, but not on the good side of things. He senses that and goes crazy about how I'm a demon whenever I get near him. Apparently it's a little overwhelming. Made the mistake of going too close to one before. Killed himself to get away. I guess what they see is pretty bad. Amy shrugged her shoulders, not overly disturbed by the effect she wrought. It was more of a nuisance than anything else really.

The village regained some life by the time the Turkish man returned, and his blue eyes followed the movements of some of the tribe as they went about various tasks. Wilson seemed to find none of said tasks dangerous, as he was silent and even dropped down from his canine companion’s shoulder to the ground. He faked composure by licking a paw and combing his whiskers, thought they trembled. He was just as uncomfortable around the woman as the screaming shaman.

Amy shook her head then said that the shaman saw her as a demon—and the cat looked up immediately from his grooming, for Levent’s expression grew intense at the woman’s dismissive explanation. He nodded slowly as she concluded, but the smile that came to his lips wasn’t a casual and flamboyant one as before. Instead, he stepped closer, a shoulder pressed to the pole she was leaning on, the space between them diminishing. He seemed to be searching for something—a reaction of some sort, whether from her or from him. If the shaman could sense a demon’s aura, why couldn’t he? He’d tasted of the drugs that brought such sensations to mind.

He chuckled, though an outsider might call it sinister. “Are you a demon?” he purred, smiling though his eyes searched hers intently. “And are you truly bad?” His lips pulled back in a toothy grin, his voice falling. “Should I be afraid of you?” Many other questions passed silently across his face, challenging the truth in her connection to the other world. He’d seen many who would name themselves demons and devils and gods, all blasphemers whose only claim to the darkness was that of an insecure child. There was a deep truth in such things, and he acted as if he could tell if she would lie.

The white tomcat flattened his ears, curling his tail tightly around his haunches to keep it from lashing irritably. “You’re playing with fire, Lev,” he muttered, but it might as well have been to himself.

Levent stepped toward her, and Amy met his eyes steadily. Her brown eyes acted as a mirror, reflecting the greed and hunger pouring off the male before her. The words had stirred something inside him. She had finally uncovered his wish: to speak with a demon. Her mask remained in place, measuring him carefully. The wish to discover such a thing revealed a dark intent within him, much darker than what she had suspected the male capable of, even when she did know that he longed for things beyond the normal range.

His dark chuckle didn't touch her, though his request did. The beast inside her raged, flashing through her body. The darkness inside her was visible in the tug of her lips to a smile that was more teeth than it should have been, brown laughing eyes that revealed unimaginable cruelty. She wanted to let it go, to show Levent just how much of a demon she truly was. His last words had her laughing, a light sound that made the temperature drop. I'd be disappointed if you were. I might not think much of cats, but I'd listen to yours if I were you. You don't want to know the answers.

Gracefully Amy turned, looking to the chief. He nodded his head nervously, indicating towards the tent that was set aside for her use. She moved towards it, looking inside. A small pile of gifts and tributes, along with requests for their goddess to grant, laid in a small pile just at the entrance. Inside were luxurious furs, a soft pillow, and more tribal decorations, the best quality they could afford. A small, but just as fancy, section was divided off for Levent's use. Satisfied she dismissed him. The food will be here soon. Have a seat? Amy crossed to her bed, sitting neatly on the furs as regally as any deity had the right to be.

Lev wants to eat her. xDD Do you have any direction you want this to go? I hope to pick him up at the beginning of March. Big Grin

There was something that inexplicitly tied Levent to this woman. It was not the bonds of flesh, despite the hours of passion they had shared physically linked, for the man did not believe in such commitment despite his gentleness. It was not a vow or an oath, for he had promised her nothing that he could remember. He had come here of free will, and yet something like kader, fate.

Perhaps it was the whim of the god, or even the demons who raged underneath the great deity’s might. They played dangerous games, but the Turkish wolf lusted after danger. He lusted after Amy in a way that was beyond the confines of body and senses. There was something buried deep within her, something she was born with or had created or had planted in her from a young age.

He wanted to sink his fangs into her breast, claw open her ribcage—and find it, devour it. Whatever “it” was.

The hunger died in his blue eyes once Amy laughed and informed him that he should listen to his companion’s warnings. His smile remained on his face for a moment before fading like an afterimage, and he stepped away to allow her space. Bilâkis, he might have informed her with a smile that mirrored hers tooth for tooth, I want to know every answer. I want to tear you apart until I can find it, dişi şeytan.

The feline relaxed at his feet, meanwhile, not wanting even a glimpse of what the two canines meant when they discussed such matters. His wide yellow eyes watched the merchant carefully as the dog turned to the shaman, and Levent sent him a look that he hoped was reassuring enough, although he could never rid himself of the guilt, dragging Wilson into this dark affair. Of course, such guilt was the last thing on his mind when the hunger took him, but the aftermath made his heart sore.

Levent smiled normally again as they approached the tent, and his blue eyes scanned the trinkets and furs with the appraising eyes of one in his trade. His smile grew broad before he settled down on his furs, passing his hand over them, wondering which he would sell and which he would keep for himself. Who knew what luxury he would be able to afford once he left these lands and scouted east?

“So,” he said, the word hanging in the air for a moment as the conversation turned casual and weightless once again. “Would you tell me of these Nova Scotian packs? I’m not sure when I’ll head there, as I want to make all the preparations I can.” He grinned as the tomcat crawled into his lap, his claws finding the sweet spot between his ears. He spoke teasingly then. “Do they eat defenseless little kittens?”

Disappointment flavored Amy's eyes as Levent backed down. Part of her had hoped that he would challenge her, ask for the darkness to be revealed. Perhaps it was for the best he had not, as Amy earned plenty of wealth through this small tribe with very little work, and going on a killing spree from releasing the demon inside her would not bode well under any circumstances. The tribe would be lost, she'd probably be injured, and Levent might decide indeed that he didn't care for the darkness inside her, running in fear. This way she wouldn't have to find out, and keep his charming company for a while longer.

The male's pleasure at the luxury Amy had managed to carve out for herself brought a smile to her lips. Yes, it was definitely a good thing that Levent hadn't pushed. Such luxury was rare on the savage land the two merchants had chosen to find themselves in. She listened to his question carefully, considering what she might say. There is a wonderful pack to see when you first entered. The lower members aren't exactly the brightest, but they understand power. They call themselves Salsola. They have some neighbors to the west, Ichika no Ho-en and Anathema. Don't waste your time with Anathema, they're arrogant fools, the whole lot of them. Ichika is worth a visit though, if only because they're extremely gullible.

A beautiful female entered the tent then, bearing a roast boar. Small nuts and berries had been tucked around. After placing the food down she glanced at him shyly. Understanding that the tribe was trying to increase it's power by marrying off one of their females to Levent Amy lifted her lips, revealing a fang at the girl. Quietly she stepped back, ready to take more orders. Amy carved into the boar, removing the liver and splitting it in two, passing half to Levent. There is a pack of coyotes as well, called Inferni. Highly territorial, but fairly reasonable in negotiations. Some members are arrogant and will try to cheat you though. I suggest carrying a weapon when passing by them. Delicately Amy tucked into the flesh, enjoying the rich taste that fell on her tongue. This truly was choice meat, if still gamey compared to the cuisine in Europe.

She laughed a little at Levent's question about cats being eaten before considering. None of the packs I've been to have been savage enough for that. They even have strong bonds with the prey animals in the south. They don't even understand slavery down there. Amy cast him a knowing look, explaining her exact position on the soft south. They were fools, one and all, and a threat to her trade. They were only useful when they had someone who owed her a favor in it.

That's fine. <3 Requesting him now. xD And this reply sucks...

As his pale fingers toyed with the shinies sitting at the edge of the furs, Levent kept his ears swiveled toward the female for her answer. He did his best to file the information away and memorize the names; it would be critical for him to survive in this new region. Power and pride gullible fools, the dance of darkness and delight he needed. With his silver tongue, he’d have little trouble bartering or perhaps even receiving a bit of power. His expectations were not particularly high, as what worked for the European luperci might not be something these North American ones went for, but he knew that he would adapt with time.

The lesson on packs was interrupted as a lovely woman came in, and the male couldn’t help but shoot her a grin when her eyes flickered shyly to him. His flirtatious expression collapsed into one of amusement as Amy bared a tooth at the girl, and he turned his attention onto the boar, waiting for Amy to partition it for the both of them. As he took a bite of the liver, she described a pack of coyotes, a species he wasn’t quite as familiar with. Few coyotes lived on his birth continent. It wasn’t a big deal, as all canines were canines, and species only altered some instincts and personalities, but he’d be curious to meet them nonetheless—a safe distance from their borders and with throwing knives in hand, of course.

The brown wolf smirked faintly as she mentioned the southern packs, even as he pried off a part of the meat for Wilson to nibble on. He’d fit right in with other animal-lovers, even if that way lay less power than the deals he was seeking to make.

Levent shrugged at mention of slavery. “The luperci here operate differently, I suppose, and have peculiar beliefs. I only know about the acceptance of slavery in what I’ve read. Some of these wolves could use to be enlightened.” His tone was without amusement, but not firm or pressing, only a casual observation and statement. He had seen slaves before in Eurasia, and his heart had gone out to some of them, but his ultimate moral position on the issue had been undecided. It was times like these that he turned to his book, and that position was clear. Slavery could be a punishment for disbelief, and the children of slaves and prisoners of war entered slavery. At the same time, however, for a master to set his slave free was praiseworthy. He mulled over these thoughts as he ate, knowing that there would be much to learn and teach these Nova Scotians.

“I’ll check out these northern packs as you suggested,” the Turkish wolf said at last, smiling at her. “Then I’ll head south and steal all their livestock.” His voice was jesting, but there was no doubt Levent would try to get his hands on at least one of them.

Levent's amusement at Amy's reaction to the female didn't sit as well with Amy. It made her appear rather shallow, instead of merely keeping him out of the grips of someone who would just use him. Alright, she was using him too, but that was different. Levent was hers, nobody else's. She looked over to the male with a fierce pride, darkness glittering inside. The way he absorbed the knowledge she handed him was nice to watch, knowing that he would make the best possible use out of what she gave him. The cat was simply a note on the side for her.

She had to grin at his words. Peculiar beliefs indeed. Amy knew that Levent harbored some rather unusual beliefs though the exact level of them was unknown. Amy was used to dealing with those who didn't understand slaves or use them. The main thing she wished for was that she wouldn't get attacked over it by those who disliked it. It always gave her such a mess to clean up afterwards. Amy laughed at the words, picking out another piece of meat and eating it. I'll be willing to help you with that. Startled noises came outside the tent. Exasperated Amy stuck her head out. Sure enough, the shaman had been working on making charms against evil. They made her sick. Pulling back inside she sat down, working on keeping the demon caged.
