A Day of Solace

WC: 516 OOC: It's near noon, Niro is optime Smile Also set June 13, if there's no problems with that Smile

The days were getting longer and nights shorter; life was beginning new and Niro knew this would possibly be a very good year, at least for him. His mate was still ever loving and he had two beautiful children added to the nest. He was a proud father as both of them were showing their skills now, though they were still so veyr young, but as a law made by Orin, any Takekuro had to learn to read. Heiro seemed keen on hunting, though Niro didn’t see the look in his eyes he got sometimes and Tasha, well she was just too sweet to just pick one thing out for the little girl. All in all his family was growing his sister even had a child, though he was not happy at first, no brother wold be when he had to protect his sister from the cruel world most her life, but he grew to accept it and with the new addition it was all better.

Today Niro was not leading, no Marahute was. She was at a casual flight pace and Niro was following behind. She didn’t lead him out of the packlands, but rather closer to the town or city or whatever it is they called it. She had been attracted to tall things and many of the buildings were pretty tall in the town. Niro walked casually through, knowing that she would probably want to perch on every building. She had done this before and he wasn’t going to stop her nor could he. Instead he moved around the quieted old city wondering if everything had already been looted from the old human habitats. He didn’t need anything, though a new carving knife would help. His was starting to dull and chafe most of his work. Patting his belt at the thought of his knife, he made sure that it was still there. The belt was the only thing the man wore, though hooked in them were his gloves he first made when Anann taught him leatherworking. THey had certainly seen better days. Marahute’s claws were that sharp and Niro knew he would have to make new ones eventually, but these ones had so much sentiment. They were the first thing he ever made from leather.

With a sigh, he found he had enough of just walking he sat taking his knife and finding a piece of wood, too small to make into anything, and just started shaving it. It was nice to be out and about. To not have to worry about his children and his life for only a few moments, but looking back he missed his children, not the younger ones, but the older ones. Foxglove, Maggie, Jiva. They all had their own lives now and he had not been in their lives for a while. He found out Foxglove left AniWaya but where she went he had no Idea. That was when he decided a small trip would be needed, but he didn’t move. He wasn’t ready to and Marahute was having far too much fun.

The sun was nearly overhead by the time Hati reached the port town of Lunenburg. He did not often venture into the town since it was a good ways away from his family's house, and the youth still preferred not to stray too far from what he knew best. But his mind was on his eldest sister Amaranth and her mate Niro; he could not remember much of Ama from his childhood, but her face and voice was familiar when he met them at the borders with his mother last month. They had their two little pups with them, which Mother explained would be his niece Tasha and his nephew Heiro. Niro's sister Orin was with them as well, but he knew even less of the woman with the colorful mane and the swollen belly, or her adopted daughter. He supposed they were all family to him, though, since his mother was so overjoyed to welcome them home.

And yet, he had not seen them since they were first accepted, and decided he might try to look for them and introduce himself on his own. He first tried the Chien Hotel, knowing most of their packmates preferred the communal setting and the convenience of being nearby, but he did not catch their scents there. It was a warm June day, pleasant and sunny, and he decided a walk to Lunenburg would not be such a bad thing. The wolfdog had some grace in his easy stride, but not the stamina or strength his father was known for. As the tall buildings sprang up on the horizon, Hati found himself panting, overheated by the sunlight gathered in his dark fur. He took a moment to catch his breath and cool off in the shade of the abandoned opera house, smoothing his mane back with his white fingers. He needed to look presentable, after all. Still, he had no idea if Amaranth and Niro were living here either; if he struck out here as well, he would have to go home and ask Mother if she knew. She would probably want to visit with him, which wouldn't be such a bad thing. But he was trying to be a little more independent, so he hoped he would find the relatives he was looking for.

The scent of brine was heavy in the air of the harbor town, but Hati caught a faint whiff of a packmate's trail laid recently. Midnight ears swiveled forward, listening for the sounds of anyone nearby. It was a quiet place save for the distant rhythm of the ocean, but he did not hear any footsteps or voices. He padded into the street, plumed tail waving behind him as he followed the scent. It was masculine, and seemed familiar enough that it could be Niro, although Hati was not fully certain since he had not spent much time with his brother-in-law. His instinct was correct after all, though, as the pale grey wolf with the unmistakable spiked black mane came into view. He was seated, and fiddling idly with a knife and what appeared to be a small bit of wood. Hati smoothed his fur with his palms, making sure everything was immaculate, no dust or grime from his walk here. Then he called out in polite greeting, "Bonjour, Niro! I hope you and your family are doing well. It's Hati Catori, we met at the borders...?" The young wolfdog stepped a few paces nearer, unsure if he should offer a handshake or something less formal like a hug. He did not know much about Niro, but he had been raised to value manners and family above all else. Without his mother's presence as a safety net, he was less certain whether or not he was making a good impression.

Niro was in mid stride with his knife when the voice called out his name. It was unfamiliar but as he looked up he could see the familiar face of Hati, the quiet wolf who was yet another brother in law in which had greeted Niro at the borders with his mother. Niro gave a welcoming smile and stood. He came closer to the young man holding out his hand, he was a hand shaker by heart and it was always good to see family.

“It is very good to see you Hati. Yes my family are quite well. The little ones are with Amaranth right now probably being drilled on some kind of self defense. What brings you all the way out here?”

He asked, then looked up as he heard Marahute finally give a warning that someone was right next to the man. He rolled his eyes and shook his head bringing it back down to the Catori male. He put his knife away and watching to make sure no one or nothing was near, he tossed the stick that he had been shaving.

“Today is Marahute’s day to lead, she may be here for a while.”

He pointed up. The large golden eagle was perched on one on the buildings closest to them.

“it gives her a sense that she has things in control every once in awhile.”

He whispered putting his hand over his muzzle as though he didn’t want the bird to hear. She could of course. she had superb hearing and she ruffled her feathers and took off again, one thing she could do was make Niro feel jealous that he couldn’t fly up there with her and she knew he wished to be there in the sky flying side by side with her.

Hati was relieved to see his relative brighten with a smile, obviously pleased to see him. He met the taller male's handshake, feeling his slender fingers enveloped in the calloused grip. Just a few short months ago, he would not have been able to shift and use his hands this way; he was proud of the dignified stature it gave him, letting him appear less like a puppy and more like the young man he was maturing into. Niro was impressive up close, his face marked with thin claw scars, the sun gleaming off the row of gold rings that lined his ear. He cut such a unique and dashing figure, and Hati already felt a growing sense of admiration.

"I actually came to see you and Amaranth, since we didn't get much time to talk when you first arrived. I didn't know where you were staying, though, so... I thought I'd walk through town, see if I happened to bump into you." He smiled politely, since that was exactly what had happened. He was a shade disappointed to hear that his little niece and nephew were busy, but he could make an appointment to visit them another time. It seemed like all of the kingdom's pups were in the same generation as Hati was, meaning they were all reaching adulthood now. Tasha and Heiro's arrival meant he was finally not the youngest anymore, and he was looking forward to watching them grow up, getting to play the role of uncle for the first time.

When he heard the unfamiliar cry from the sky, Hati's ears shot up, staring above him with wide eyes. Niro seemed unfazed, shaking his head with amusement as he set aside his carving knife. There was a large dark-feathered bird of prey -- a hawk, or an eagle perhaps -- perched above them, looking regal in the sunlight. "Marahute... that bird belongs to you?" Hati asked in awe, watching as the beautiful creature ruffled its feathers and took flight. He knew the Courtiers raised chickens and pigeons in the coops behind the stables, but he had never met a falconer before. "Isn't that dangerous?" he added, thinking of the mighty talons and sharp beaks those birds possessed. His gaze lingered on Niro's facial scars, presuming that must have been where he got them. He didn't want to ask his brother-in-law directly, though, feeling he would probably be insulted by the personal question.

WC: 507 OOC: you done it now!! Niro won't shut up about birds hahahha

Niro smiled, not everyone knew of handshakes but when they did he used it enthusiastically, this was exactly what he did when Hati took his hand. His shook enthusiastically. The young man was growing quite well and Niro could see he liked the new shape. He must have just learned how to change recently. It was nice to see the younger ones grow and get older. It made him feel slightly old, but he knew pups grew fast and new ones could always be made, though none were ever the same as the last pup.

“Ah well it is no wonder why you have not found us.” The man chuckled heartily. “We do not live within a town. We live near the sea in a cave up to the north by the borders.”

He said pointing in the direction of his cave home. It had been taken care of since he came home, though he left the floorboards to wait until winter when he would need them. The cool floor of the cave helped them keep cool during the winter, but much of it had been changed into a rather unique type of him with a door included. The man was handy in a way that could make it work out quite well.

Hati’s reaction to Marahute was much the same as anyone else’s. Astonished disbelief. Niro laughed and whistled for the bird. She chose to ignore the whistle though, knowing she could. Niro shrugged. He was sure she would come down when she wanted to.

“Well she doesn’t belong to me per say. I am like her father. I raised her since she was an egg.... buuut yes it is pretty dangerous. She is quite large and her talons can hurt if you aren’t use to it. She is big enough to eat a puppy but don’t tell her that.” He winked

“She knows that wolves are not a good thing to mess with. We share each other’s abilities. her sight and my hunting we are able to take down something it would take many hours to take down without help. And this pack is her pack. She respects it as any wolf could.”

The man explained. He knew he was quite talkative, but when it came to birds he was master. He knew so much about them and it excited him to know that he could give off any information he could. He nodded as the boy spoke of the chickens and pigeons.

“I trained those brainless pigeons, but hopefully soon I’ll be able to get messangers far better than them, and maybe we’ll have a good feast off the dumb ones.”

He said laughing. He was joking of course, he would let them go, he wasn’t one for eating his own trained birds no matter how dumb they were. He couldn’t imagine actually eating the things anyway. Though he knew many who had eaten them.

Hati returned Niro's friendly smile, pleased that they had started off on such a good note together. He was puzzled, however, by the male's revelation of why he had been so difficult to locate. "A cave by the borders?" Hati repeated, tilting his head quizzically. Why would anyone choose to live like that? Perhaps he was spoiled, growing up in the grand Victorian house with beds to sleep in, and parents who would not only hunt for him, but also cook his meals. It just seemed... primitive, almost barbaric, to huddle in some burrow like wild rabbits. "You know you can have a house in town if you want, or a room at the Chien Hotel, there are plenty to choose from..." he pointed out slowly, not wanting to offend Niro -- but not comprehending why his family chose to shun the safety and luxury of an actual roof over their heads. Maybe they were just used to traveling without amenities, and didn't want to jump right into a new way of life. Hati took mental note anyway of the direction Niro was pointing, reminding himself to visit there later so that he could see Amaranth and the pups, make sure they were comfortable with their accommodations.

The Takekuro man let out a whistle, making sensitive Hati jump a little. He peered up at the silhouette of the bird in flight, waiting patiently to see her response. Nothing happened. He looked anxiously back to his brother-in-law, wondering what was supposed to have occurred, and was met with a nonchalant shrug. "Is she supposed to do something when you whistle like that?" he asked, inquisitive and serious as always. He liked to learn about everything, and falconry was a fascinating new topic. "Does that mean you can talk to her, like Alder can talk to horses? Is she intelligent? Does she know not to hurt your puppies?" His pale unblinking gaze was riveted now on Niro's face, wanting to know more. It was touching to think of him raising an egg, hatching the bird and tending to it like one of his children. Hati had yet to form that kind of bond with another, and felt a strange jealousy towards those with creature companions. He did not know if his future would hold a bird, a horse, a cat, or something else entirely, but he was eager to meet the animal he would share himself with.

"I didn't realize you trained the pigeons, too! You must really be in tune with birds. You... you wouldn't really eat them, would you?" he asked, his ears falling back tensely. He could not always grasp when someone was making a joke, though he did relax a little when Niro began laughing. He must have been kidding... right? If Marahute was so special to him, shouldn't his pigeons be that close to his heart as well?

WC: 509 OOC: I do believe he will!!

The boy’s incredulity made Niro laugh outright. It was a reaction he wasn’t use to. Many wolves accepted it as it was a natural way to live, was in a cave and this cave having a few chambers of its own was perfect for him and his family He nodded knowing full well he could have a house or live in the hotel.

“Ah but this cave suits us. I lived in the hotel for a little while until me and Mara became mates, but I’ve tidied the place up to be homey. It is far more natural to live in a cave than in a human home.”

The man grinned and winked. He had a wierd way of declining, but he knew that the boy didn’t understand what others took for granted and what some needed. Niro knew Amaranth needed her space and she seemed far more comfortable in the cave than anywhere else. She wouldn’t live anywhere else and he wouldn’t live anywhere else without her. He felt bad when Marahute didn’t come to join them after he called her and the looked on Hati’s face made Niro give a shrug

On normal days she'll come closer, but as I said, today is her day. Don’t you worry though when she feels the need to investigate she will and she’s a very curious bird! She is very intelligent yes, but I am not intelligent in her speech. I know some things but only just. She can say some things too, but it’s not always easy to understand her. She knows very well not to touch the pups. She respects me as a father for I’m the one who hatched her. I taught her from a hatchling and she’s been very good with pups.”

He said, he knew she could just fly off with one if she really wanted to. The man had seen her pick up a goat by the leg and just swing it so that it would drop and break its neck. She was a very large, very powerful bird and he respected her for that. He knew she wouldn’t hurt any of his pack though as she thought they were her flock, even though golden eagles never flocked together.Niro’s laugh grew as the boy seemed inclined to need reassurance that Niro really wasn’t going to eat the pigeons.

“As much as they are a burden on my life, I’ve trained them far too hard to actually eat them, no I’ll let them grow fat and merry until they pass on.”

The man said knowing that Hati needed some reassurance. He did not, however have the same feelings for the pigeons as he did the bird of prey he trained. Their intelligence levels were far different and though the pigeons knew and loved food they were food themselves to those that owned the skies. Niro knew that much and he kept his feelings from attaching to any of the cooing animals.

Sorry again for the wait, m'dear~ Smile Have some philosophy!

Hati drew his chin down, deep in thought. Was that true? Was it more natural for wolves to den in caves than to live like his family did? Human-style houses were more comfortable for those on two legs, though, with doorknobs that could be opened with hands, and amenities like bookshelves and dining tables and beds. And besides, they were not all built by humans; Luperci had learned the art of carpentry and built some of the very houses in this kingdom. He met Niro's wink with a stubborn frown, still feeling as though his brother-in-law was wrong somewhere in his line of thinking. "I don't think that's more natural for wolves that can shift," he voiced hesitantly. "But... I guess if your family likes it, you wouldn't want to move them..." His ears dropped back, acquiescing to his older relative's judgment. Maybe it was because he was half-dog, and Niro was full-wolf? But... then his sister Amaranth would feel the same way. It was a mystery.

Niro elaborated on Marahute's faculties, capturing Hati's interest completely. She sounded like an amazing creature. He wondered if he would be able to understand the words she spoke, or if it was something only her father-figure Niro was to hear. Low Speech was an ability he was very envious of. He craned his neck, pale eyes riveted on the dark silhouette of the eagle. "It must be an incredible view from up there. She seems so happy to be able to fly." Before meeting a genuine falconer, Hati had not considered that birds could have personalities as much as horses or wolves. "Does she like having a wolf family, or does she want a bird family too? Is she social?" He looked back to Niro, assuming he knew if he raised the chick from an egg. He had so many questions. Would she ever have an eagle friend, or a mate? Did eagles have a desire for company? And if Marahute could speak, did that mean the pigeons could too? The thought of fat and merry pigeons relieved him of the tension he had gathered in his posture. It was just a joke after all, Niro was not cruel. Still, they were both predators by nature, and it was beginning to dawn on him that all the animals around them had potential for intelligence and partner bonding. It was disconcerting, to say the least. "Do... you ever eat birds, now that one of them is your family?"

“Well I’m not without my resources. We have... well had a floor and a door and furnishings like any other. And I suppose we den more than live in a cave itself, but not all wolves care much about the ways humans lived. Many still den even if they can shift. It’s a matter of personal preference I suppose.”

Niro said shrugging, he did not want to get into an argument at something that they were both clearly right about. He looked up with his brother and watched the bird moving, it was a sight and he nodded.

“Many months ago she was shot, we all thought that she wouldn’t be able to fly again.”

Niro admitted. She had been so horribly sad in the months that she was to heal from her injury, but he was able to care for her wing that she could fly again and it was amazing to see her do so.

“As you can tell she is free to do as she wishes. I have never tried to restrain her, not like with the pigeons and the other birds I had before learning low speech. She likes living with me and the benefits it comes with. As for social, she is not too social by her kinds’ instincts. I do not know if she will find a mate, and if she’ll stay when she does.”

He said his head moving down towards Mati’s and smiled at his last question and shook his head.

“No, not really, though chickens are tasty, just don’t tell my sister that.”

He said laughing a little thinking about the mother hen that she’d stolen an egg from chasing after her. It was funny and he had laughed himself silly. She still had an affinity for the mindless animals and Niro didn’t know why.

Hati listened intently, quietly filing away the information. He did not know any wolves that preferred to den in caves or holes, not in the kingdom. But admittedly he did not know many outside of his own family, and Niro had just proved that even his relatives were not all cut from the same cloth. He had a lot to learn still about personal preferences and cultures, and only experience would teach him. Terra was capable of shifting, but still preferred to run around on all fours whenever she could. Hati didn't quite understand her way of thinking either, but perhaps that made him the oddity. He hoped not; he would rather be the normal one walking on two legs and living in a fancy house.

Niro shared a disturbing story from their past, and Hati gaped, pale eyes wide. "Shot?!" he asked incredulously. "An archer was hunting her? But why? Did you find out who did it?" He bit his lip, glad that the story had a happy ending after all, because the proof was flying before his eyes. But it was upsetting to imagine Niro raising the little eaglet from an egg, and then finding her broken on the ground... it must have been horrible. "So she is free, but... that comes with danger, doesn't it? The pigeons are restricted, but safe..." Which was preferable? He wanted to believe that a free animal would be happier, but if a bird could lose their ability to fly so easily, maybe the answer wasn't so obvious. He would want to keep his animal safe no matter what, even if it meant keeping them close to him all the time.

"Your sister raises birds too?" he asked quickly. He knew next to nothing about Orin, other than she was due to have pups soon. Perhaps she had already, although he assumed she would come to visit Ayita when she did. "Is falconry something your family is known for? Do you think Tasha and Heiro will be good at it, since Marahute is their big sister?" It was interesting to think such a talent could be hereditary, and it made him wonder if there was anything in his Catori and Haskel ancestry that would lend itself to him. The only skill he shared with his littermates was fluency in French, and that was a result of their bilingual mother's insistence that they study both languages equally. It was nothing so grand as taming creatures of the sky, and learning to speak with them...

WC: 434 OOC: wheeeeee

His head slowly nodded as Hati seemed stunned that anyone would shoot down a bird. Niro remembered it as though it were done the day before and had to reassure himself by looking over at Marahute, who was making her way down slowly. Out of his belt he pulled out a large leather glove, made just for his hand and slowly put it on as he answered Hati “Yes with a bow and arrow, and yes, I did try attacking him but his mate stopped me, she fixed her up though... and there were apologies made. I don’t know who would eat the flesh of a predator unless they were starving but... I suppose each wolf has their own preference.” He said. At Hati’s mention of Marahute being free and in danger and the pigeons being caged and safe he shrugged; “The pigeons have a dangerous job as well. The are our messengers for now. Until I can hire some other kind of feathered help.” He smiled.

At the mention of his sister raising birds the thought of the big fat hen chasing her with an egg in her hand came into clear view in his mind and he couldn’t help but give a lough laugh; “Oh goodness no! She thought she could once... I just meant my sister has an affinity to them.” He said, then as the shadow of the bird came, he held out his arm, and Marahute landed. The bird was quite large, as big as his head if not bigger, and her wing span was outrageous. “And this is Marahute! Marahute this is Hati.” Niro said, the bird moved her head this way and that to get a clear picture of the girl, ruffled her feathers in content and sat still, making Niros arm feel her pressure more. “As for falconry being in my family, well Jiva knows how, though my other daughters have never shown any signs of liking it, Maggie does have a bird of her own. Tasha and Heiro do seem to have an interest, if not small, but never as big of one as I had when I was their age. My father was never happy when I spoke of having a bird, always told me ‘We are wolves and should act like it’ so I don't think it really runs in the family, now hunting... that is in our blood.” The memory hurt a little but he gave a sad smile. He understood his father, but felt he wasn’t always right. He would be proud his grandson, Jiva, was taking his life the way he wanted it.

Now that he thought about it, Hati had not eaten many birds in his young life. He was inexperienced in hunting by himself, since he lived with his parents and they made sure to feed him regular meals. Wild fowl took more effort to capture than rabbits or even deer, so they rarely found their way onto the Haskel-Catori dinner table. He therefore had no inkling to what would drive a wolf to try and kill a creature as majestic as Marahute; it seemed like a needless waste of energy on the hunter's part, as well as a shame to harm an intelligent companion animal. It occurred to him then that wolves could also hunt horses, and the thought was abhorrent to him. Even though he had no qualms about eating their cloven hooved cousins, deer, the idea of a horse being brought down by arrows or fangs made him nauseated. He would rather starve than resort to murder. "That shouldn't be a preference, it's wrong to eat someone's friend," Hati muttered, frowning. Hopefully the mated pair with the arrows had learned their lesson.

Hati's dark ears flicked at the faint sound of feathers rustling. He watched in awe as Niro knowingly equipped his leather glove, preparing for his eagle's approach. A shadow was cast against the bright light, the mighty bird's wingspan eclipsing the sun. With an almost lazy grace, the gleaming talons settled to grasp their leather perch, her full weight settling onto her wolf partner's arm. Hati took several paces back, intimidated by the intensity in her raptor eyes. There was a fierce beauty in her sweeping curves, the rich shades of burnished gold and burnt sienna that made up her glossy feathers. He wanted to stroke her feathers, or greet her somehow, but he did not know the protocol for birds -- that hooked beak was like a dagger, long and sharp and right at eye level. Instinctively he knew not to stare into her eyes for long, and he ducked his head shyly, studying the eagle from his safe distance. "...Bonjour, Marahute, it is a pleasure to meet you," he called softly, uncertain if she would understand his intentions. "Niro, she's beautiful..." he exhaled.

Niro garrulously continued, pleasantly chatting about his adult children. Hati vaguely remembered the name Maggie, as someone that had been talked about a lot during the AniWaya Conflict. He was a very young pup at the time, born during the war and carrying only hazy memories of what actually went on during it. All he could piece together was that whoever Maggie was, her involvement in the conflict had been a catalyst for his own father going to war. He was told she was a relative of his, but he was unsure how; she was not a niece like Tasha, but rather a cousin, if he recalled correctly. He would have asked Niro, but it seemed tactless to ask about a woman other than his mate -- just as he had not asked about Amaranth and Kable's father, someone other than Vigilante. "I'm sorry your father doesn't like falconry. It's such an impressive talent, I hope Tasha and Heiro appreciate it as they get older." He knew all too well what it felt like to be the odd one in the family, even though his family tried their best to be supportive of Hati. Niro had so much confidence, though, unlike his reserved brother-in-law.

OOC: it was foxglove that was being talked about but it's ok lol he could probalby just get them all mixed up in names and yes we can get this finished fairly soon for a new and less crusty thread! Smile

“The thing is... not everyone has a bird companion. Many wolves think it rediculous to have any kind of companion. At first I was shocked to see that horses lived here, I’ve gotten used to it, but I know many frown upon such things. I believe the man did not know she was not a companion and I do not fault them for that.” Though he could think of many things he COULD try to fault them for but for Hati’s sake he would be best to try to stay as neutral as he could.
When Marahute came down, he puffed his own chest out like a proud father, which he was. Even if they were two entirely different species, he was Marahute’s father. So seeing the fascinated look on Hati’s face made him fill with more pride, he knew that Marahute was usually calm with others and he moved her towards the young man, though making sure it was slow and he stopped a good distance in case he really didn’t want to touch her; “Go ahead, you can touch her, just her head though, they are vain animals so all the compliments you can give her will get you closer to her. SHe can understand you, so don’t be afraid to put in the biggest comments you can.” He said with a big grin. It was very true the bird was quite vain, and she even moved her head towards Hati, already pleased by him stating she was beautiful.
Niro could only shrugged at Hati’s comment; “My father would be proud of what I became not matter what, I’m sure about that, he may disapprove, but he is a wolf of the old days so I do not blame him.” Niro said, his smile grew even more as the boy spoke of Heiro and Tasha learning to appreciate it. He nodded in agreement. The thought of at least one of his children taking up his own line of work was a dream come true but never a requirement, he would teach them if they were willing, Jiva knew, but was not as interested. Maggie just picked up on it, perhaps it was just a natural talent or something, and the other two, they were in love with the birds but still so young he wasn’t pushing anything on any of them and never would.
