Hotaru was in the midst of a crushing depression, a state that rivaled the one that Cain found her in when she realized that her whole family was dead and that her eyes were no longer working. Loosing both puppies and her mate was a hard blow, and Hotaru wasn't sure what to do with herself. She had no energy to hunt and found no joy in carving. Her paranoid mind had her constantly keeping tabs on the young black wolf that now lived with her, but still Hotaru could not find peace. She felt weak and alone.

Kelia had dropped off a rabbit that morning, along with several mice and even a fish. Somehow, Hotaru managed to scarf down the rabbit and a few mice, but the rest was left for Kelia. Worried chirps passed by her ears, but the blind female barely heard them. She simply sat on her bed, clutching the fur that had once been used to keep Adrian and Aysun warm. Their scent was fading from the fur, slowly being replaced by Hotaru's scent as she grasped the blanket and hoped it would miraculously produce two healthy puppies.

Sharp pain rocketed through Hotaru's ear and she let out a loud yip. Kelia had grabbed onto her ear and pulled, hard. Standing, the grey wolf glared at where she believed the bird was. Chirping in low speech, Kelia complained of boredom and expressed her desire to stretch her wings. Hotaru paused, not sure what to think. Was Kelia trying to get her to outside, or was the bird really that bored? Either could be true when it came to the juvenile gyrfalcon. Hotaru could hear the drumming of air as her companion beat her large wings and cried out. Giving in to Kelia's demands, Hotaru stood and grabbed her walking staff.

Hotaru didn't want to stay in the pack lands, there were so many painful reminders of her pups along with the curious eyes of her packmates that she knew were there. Standing as tall and proud as she could, Hotaru moved slowly southwest. After a while, Hotaru had exited the pack lands and was traveling down Beast Grin peninsula. The blind female had heard the peninsula described as an eerie and dangerous place. However, Hotaru found the beach quite pleasant and enjoyed the challenge that the rocks provided. With her avian companions acting as her eyes and her staff to guide her; the rocks provided a decent, but not dangerous, challenge.

A pleasant wind whipped at Hotaru's summer coat, cooling her down in the last of the hot summer days. After walking for a while along the coast, the female paused to rest on one of the rock outcroppings. Water splashed lightly against the rocks, wetting her legs as she dipped them down into the receding tide. Slowly, but surely, Hotaru began to relax. The sound of splashing waves was like a gentle melody, and Kelia only added to it as she made large circles around Hotaru, adding the soft thud of her wingbeats to the chords.

Adrian was torn between what to do next. He had meant Levent, a man that had known Hotaru recently. And Levent had even pointed Adrian in the right direction to find Hotaru's current pack. Adrian hadn't needed to go far. He had planned on going straight up to the bored and howling for Hotaru. But he couldn't bring himself to do it, not like that. Which is what brought him to how he was now. He was torn by his want to make his sister forgive him for what he had done and the guilt he felt for what he had done. He had done it to protect her though, he reasoned with himself. Their father wouldn't have stopped until their entire family was dead. So Adrian had stopped him. Why should I have to apologize for trying to spare other people's lives by taking his? He wondered. Adrian sighed, pacing back and forth. The Male hated standing still for too long unless he was relaxing or napping. He was as far from relaxed as he could get at the moment though so he paced.

Adrian stopped suddenly and pulled out the recorder he kept with him always since him and Hotaru had become separated. He ran his hand over the carving on the wooden instrument. Hotaru had made it for him one day. Tears threatened to overwhelm him as he recalled that day. It felt like him and Hotaru were two different people then. Back then Adrian would never have hesitated to go to Hotaru and talk to her. Of course, back then, he wouldn't have killed their father. Adrian let a few tears fall before pushing it back down. He had to keep moving or this would happen, he would break down into a stupid, unflattering mess.

So he started walking, not trusting pacing to be enough now. The recorder's wooden texture was still present under his hand. Adrian had been so busy thinking about Hotaru that it took him a few seconds to realize something was off. Adrian could smell Hotaru. It smelled as if she had just walked past the spot he was standing at. Adrian turned in the direction her scent went and started walking towards it. He didn't stop to think about what he might find. What he knew he would find. Or more precisely, who. He just kept walking, thinking about how him and his sister use to spend so much time together that they shared one anothers' scent.

Adrian heard the waves first. Then the trees thinned out and he saw her, sitting there. He stopped for a second, inhaling sharply. Then he sighed, releasing all that air. He had known what he was going to find after all. He walked up behind Hotaru, stopping a few feet away. He took a deep breath, then smiled, "Hey Sis. How ya been?" He asked, trying to keep his voice light and easy.

Wind stroked the female's grey fur like a delicate lover, a thought that only made Hotaru want to whimper. She had sent her mate away with the worst of insults, and the worst of curses. Dexterous hands knotted themselves into clenched fists as she felt another surge of desperate emotions threaten to take her out with the tide. Hotaru took a deep breath, sucking in the salty air and held it for a moment. Slowly, she let the air escape and allowed her hands to relax against the rocks. Hotaru had learned to how to keep herself calm, but it wasn't easy. She wanted to scream and yell at the heavens, to throw a fit and chuck rocks at the sea. She wanted to howl her head off and rock herself to sleep in some deep cave underground where the light of day could never touch her fur, just as it would never touch her eyes.

Soft steps alerted the female to her company, but the wind prevented her from identifying who had joined her. Hotaru didn't care, she didn't want to know. Instead, she sat and acted oblivious to the presence behind her. It could be a packmate trying to find her, but it was more likely a curious loner who had come to see the artisan. Kelia called out from the sky, announcing the stranger's presence to Hotaru. However, the gyrfalcon did not land, probably deciding that it would be a better idea to enjoy the thermals.

The voice that reached her ears was far too familiar. Both ears flicked back as the fur on her back rose, memories of him rushing through her. Hotaru could feel her anger bubbling, rising in her chest. Her claws dug into the rock that she sat upon as her tail rose high in the air, each hair bristling like porcupine spines. Turning her head, Hotaru let loose a warning growl, her black lips peeled back fully to show off her teeth. "I thought I lost you in the woods traitor!" She spat her words, letting malice and hatred coat each syllable.

Adrian knew that she would be mad but it was the last word that almost pierced his tough skin. And the fact that it was coming from Hotaru only made the word that much sharper. Adrian forced a weak smile onto his face, not realizing it was pointless. He still didn't know the pain he had caused his sister. His twin. His other half. If he did, Adrian would hate himself. But instead of hating himself, Adrian shrugged and said, "I guess I'm just like a bad cold. You just can't seem to get rid of me." He said, he was trying to appear calm and collected but inside he wanted to scream his head off. He wanted to beg her to listen to him, to understand why he did what he did. He wanted to fall on his knees and ask for her forgiveness and understanding. He wanted to tell her how much it hurt him to hear those words. Wanted her to know that he missed the way the two of them had been.

But Adrian didn't know how to say any of that stuff, so instead he just let the smile drop and took a step forward before stopping suddenly, as if he had been electrocuted. His face twisted in pain and he dropped his head, "I'm sorry..." He whispered, lifting his head to look back at Hotaru. Anyone but her he thought as he tried to hold himself together, Anyone but her and I wouldn't feel this way. I would be able to handle it if it was anyone but Hotaru. He thought as he waited for her to say anything, anything at all. She would probably scream at him and call him more names like traitor. And all he would do was stand there and let her, because deep down he felt like they were true.

Adrian, the cursed half that she had once known so well an loved. He had been her sunshine, her strength and courage. Before, she would have relied on him for everything and would have coveted his companionship. But Hotaru was no longer the yearling who let her brother dote on her. She was no longer a mischievous Kido pup who raced through the glen with her twin. Hotaru was no longer a Kido, and no longer his sister. She was a confident, strong willed, independent female who had lived through too much darkness. Hotaru no longer felt the pull that she once did and no longer considered Adrain her "other half." He was a traitor, a murderer of her pack and eyesight.

Hotaru did not appreciate his attempt at humor and only growled again. She could feel her muscles tense as the waves lapped at her legs. Reaching for her walking staff, Hotaru prepared to leave again. She didn't want to deal with Adrian, not so soon after her she had lost Aiden and Aysun. The male's apology only made her glare in his direction. "Oh, your sorry," she scoffed. "Tell that to our dead family." Hotaru stood, still keeping her back to Adraian as she carefully found her footing on the rocks. With deliberate steps, the blind female moved towards the edge of the outcropping where the sand waited for her. Hotaru used her staff to determine the height of the rock, before she made a quick hop.

Kelia, who by then had noticed her master's movements, winged down and landed on Hotaru's shoulder with a flutter of wings. The flacon rubbed her beak through the wolf's short fur and asked a few quick question's in low speech. Hotaru answered them curtly as she continued to travel down the beach with her staff swinging in front of her in wide arcs.

Adrian's looked up as she scoffed at him and told him to talk to that about their dead family. It both hurt Adrian and made him angry. Who was she to talk to him about their dead family, when she had cast off their family name. Levent had told him that he had now idea Hotaru had a brother. He had told him that she had no family name. "Our family? How dare you talk about them as if you hadn't cast all of them aside. I could understand if it was just me, but you dropped the entire family name. And all of us would have died if I hadn't killed him Hotaru. Even if we would have won the battle, him and Malaki wouldn't have stopped until the entire pack was destroyed." Then Adrian stopped as he looked at it differently. He saw her get up to leave and he took the steps required to follow her, "The fact that you said our family means that part of you still thinks of us as brother and sister. You know it is true." Adrian wasn't one hundred percent positive it was true, but he had a feeling that his statement rang true on one level.

As Adrian followed her he noticed something weird. The staff she carried was used to guide her, as if she had to feel out the path she was taking. Adrian watched her staff for a few seconds, putting the pieces together in his head. The way her eyes lacked all the emotion they should, how she never truly looked directly at him, and now she was using the staff to help herself see. Hotaru was blind. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. He staggered in his step and had to take deep breaths, When? How? was all Adrian could think. He eventually gathered enough air to form words, "Hotaru, what..what happened to you? Why can't you see?" He hoped she knew what he meant, because he wasn't sure he could bring himself to ask the question again.

Hotaru's words were meant to be biting, to hit the traitor right where it hurt. She didn't really believe the story that he had told her before, but at the same time she didn't think he was lying. There had to be something else, because she just couldn't accept the reality that Adrian had presented. Hotaru couldn't believe that her own father, the one who had raised her with so much tender love, had become some power hungry monster. Yet, there was a part of her that knew it was a possible explanation for why Adrian had done what he did. It meant that he hadn't meant to destroy their family, and was only trying to do what was right, even if the results had been disastrous.

Adrian's words made Hotaru's lips drop slightly, mentioning how she had cast aside their family name. His words range of the truth, but Hotaru just couldn't accept it. She shook her head furiously and let loose a low growl as he claimed to know what she was thinking. He didn't know, not anymore. Anger boiling again, Hotaru let her rage flow as she spit back, "Your the only family I have left. So I cast YOU aside! Your nothing more than a murderer."

Once again, the blind female started to leave. She didn't run away, but she didn't want to stick around long enough to have him twist her mind with his truthful lies. Hotaru kept both her ears trained on Adrian as she walked and was well aware that he was following her like a shadow, like she used to follow him. An uneven pace alerted her to his staggering and Hotaru smiled wickedly. He could trip and drown in the ocean for all she cared, and it served him right for what he had done. Even so, she refused to slow down and wait for him. It wasn't until his words reached her that the grey wolf halted. A frown tugged at her lips and she turned to listen to Adrain better. She could hear his racing heartbeat and ragged breaths as he gasped for air.

In a motion that was unlike Adrian had ever seen, Hotaru took the dominance stance. She raised her tail high, lifting her muzzle slightly as her ears were pushed high and forward. Her body spoke of determined confidence and all the power that her rank as a Maven gave her. "It's amazing what a blow to the back of the head can do."

Adrian is totally in denial.

Hotaru's words rang in his head. She thought of him as nothing more than a murderer. But Adrian wasn't. Adrian hated violence and war. He had hated what their father was making them do. But that a lone would never have pushed him to kill their father. It was the fact that their father had been endangering the entire pack and, more importantly, Hotaru. That was what had pushed him to take his father's life. If Adrian hadn't loved his sister as much as he did, he would never have killed their father. And they would both be dead. "I'm not a murderer Hotaru! Why would I be here, trying to make you forgive me? If I am truly a murderer, wouldn't I have already tried to kill you, if my intention had been to kill our family?" He tried to reason with her, before following her down onto the beach. And that was when she turned to him, standing over him in a stance of power. And Adrian fell to his knees.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no... the small word kept repeating itself in Adrian's mind. He couldn't handle it. His vision swam, and his body felt like it was being controlled by someone else. I caused this. he thought to himself, I took my sister's eyesight trying to save her. What if she had been better off dead? Would she have rather died than be blind? Adrian realized he wasn't breathing and tried to draw in a breathe. He gagged, choking as he forced the air down his throat then back out. Maybe she was right, maybe he was nothing more than a monster. No... He managed to croak out, that little word still echoing in his mind without end.

Their conversation was going nowhere fast. Hotaru and Adrian took turns screaming at each other, harsh words and hate-filled voices carried across the beach and dissipated in the soft wind. Why was he there anyways? He knew that Hotaru hated him, and in her mind she had convinced herself that she would never forgive him. How could she? Yet, there was a part of her that dreamed of being with her twin again. Hotaru had dreamt of their reunion several times, although not at all in recent months. This wasn't what she had dreamt about. Every time she had run into his arms, crying as she mumbled words of forgiveness. Sometimes it was a happy reunion, other times the dreams quickly descended into nightmares as a knife was run through her back.

Hotaru chose to ignore Adrian's words, she didn't want to and couldn't answer his question. It do so would mean she would have to admit a truth that she didn't want to believe. It would make far too many of her actions pointless. So the blind wolf began to move away, to run away from the situation as she had done so many times before. It was easier to run.

For a brief moment, fear and concern for her twin broke through her stoic resolve as Adrian began to choke. What had happened to cause such a thing. Without thinking, Hotaru took a step forward. The gyrfalcon on her shoulder made a quick comment in low speech, wondering who the wolf was and why he was stupid enough to choke on nothing. Adrian managed to choke out a single word as he realize the extent of the damage that he had caused. Taking in a big gulp of air, Hotaru spoke. Her voice was calm and steady, with very little emotion thrown into the words. "All I want to do is forget what happened that day, and to try and live my life as I once did, as normal as it once was. But I can't forgive and forget Adrian."

I don't know why, but i just felt like he would get all dramatic and try and sacrifice himself now to make up for it.

It was a dream. That was all this was. Adrian would wake up any minute now, panting and sweating from this nightmare, with his sister looking down at him with a worried expression. And he would hug Hotaru and look into her eyes to make sure they were aware and seeing, before burying his head against her shoulder and crying. Then he would tell her about his nightmare and it would be better. Because he wouldn't be alone. He would have his twin sister that he loved so much by his side. But this wasn't a dream. It was a far to real nightmare.

Adrian managed to choke down a few more breathes. He saw her step forward and hoped for a second that she would tell him that it was okay, she had forgiven him long ago for what he had done. But he knew those words weren't going to come. He just didn't want to admit that he knew it. He wanted to curl up in a ball and die. Adrian could handle many things but guilt was one he had trouble with. If he thought he did something because he had no other option, he would feel guilty, but he could survive. But the guilt of blinding his sister was different. Adrian could already tell that even if she forgave him, he would never forgive himself. He told himself that it was his fault. He could have found another way. He could have told her his plan and made her come willingly. He could have stayed and died while she escape. And that is what Adrian thought he should have done. He should have made the ultimate sacrifice for his sister. His life was nothing if he couldn't protect her.

As Hotaru's voice broke through the spell that the realization of what he had done had set him in, he managed to suck in a ragged breathe. Then he laid there panting, feeling like his head had been about to explode. She can never forgive me. He thought, pain tearing at his heart. He finally forced himself to look up at her. He looked into her eyes but now, knowing what he did, he saw nothing there. Her eyes could just have easily been missing from her skull for all the difference it made to him. "Good. Don't forgive me. I don't deserve it." And he didn't. He realized that now. He was responsible for everything. "I had wanted to protect you so much, that I hurt you. I can never make up for that. So what is the point in even trying? Just kill me and be done with it Hotaru. Kill me and then you can forget." Adrian looked up at her with pain and longing in his eyes. He hadn't been able to sacrifice himself for her when they were younger. But he would make up for it now. He would let her seek her retribution by spilling is blood on the sand. And for once, Adrian actually believe the killing would be just.

Hotaru couldn't seen anything, she couldn't see her brother's expressions or what he was doing. Yet, her eyes didn't betray the disability that they had. Many had told her that her eyes remained clear and if she looked at them, it was deceiving. Hotaru didn't hold herself like a blind wolf either, choosing to be confident rather than cautious. She couldn't afford to be cautious. Especially if Adrian was around, she couldn't trust what he would do. Even if he was truly apologetic and felt guilty about his actions, it didn't change that fact that he had killed their father and blinded her.

The grey female couldn't say that Adrian's words surprised her. He was always one to internalize guilt and had a habit of punishing himself to the extreme. What did surprise her however, was her own reaction. She grew angry with Adrian, as she always did when he acted in such a barbarically, stupendously, idiotic fashion. A low growl came from her as her muzzle scrunched into a snarl. "You selfish..." The venom in her voice was obvious and her form shook with rage. How dare he try and take the easy way out. She had to live with what he did, so it was the least that he could do to man up and live with it as well.

"No Adrian, you don't get to die, I wont let you take the easy way out. Live with your guilt and the knowledge of what you have done to me." Hotaru turned and began to walk away again, wondering if his twin would try to stop her.

Adrian didn't understand her first two words. There was nothing selfish about what he was doing. was there? He was trying to make up for his wrongs. He was trying to show her that he didn't mean for everything that happened to happen. And if the only way to do that was to sacrifice his life to her than that was what he intended to do. How whats that selfish? Adrian didn't realize that he could sometimes have a very one track mind. He saw himself as Hotaru's protector and he had always been willing to give his life for her. But at the time he hadn't thought that giving his life would save her, so instead he had killed their father and knocked her out. He hadn't intended to take her eye sight. So he had failed her. And now it was his job to make it up to her. And the only way he saw to do that was to do what he hadn't done before.

Adrian didn't understand her anger, until she explained herself. She doesn't think death is a good enough punishment, he realized, with fear. She was going to make him live with it. She was going to make him do the unimaginable. Live with the guilt that he had damaged his sister beyond repair. Adrian heard her more than saw her walk away. His mind was somewhere else. Surrounded by the guilt he now felt. It was like he was a little rabbit in his own mind and the guilt was a pack of hungry wolves, snarling and garnishing their teeth, waiting to tear him apart piece by little piece. Adrian couldn't move to follow her. And he wasn't sure he would even if he could have.
