There were a few packs and territories yet to explore, but when the merchant followed his paws, they led him west—cutting straight across the coast and the deep, tangled forest to a fertile valley. He should have recognized the path he took, but any memories remained rooted in his subconscious. Instead, he focused on the odd plots of farmland overgrown with weeds and wild plants and headed toward the coast, as much as it unnerved him.

The oaks and tamaracks dominated the area, but the wolf could see houses hidden in the leafy embrace of the great trees. Sometimes the rotten skeleton of a fence peeked through the shrubs, and once or twice his feet hit pavement instead of grass and soil. He had spent the last week or so in the great city of Halifax, but somehow this marriage of human and wild architecture was more intriguing than the skyscrapers and streets there.

Scent markers warned him from wandering too far into the town, but recognizing the scent Levent only smiled. He stepped onto a porch and noted the door—swung inward and off its top hinges—before entering one of the houses. Time had reclaimed this one well; in the center of the building, a bad foundation had faltered against the push of a tree. The sapling rose through the center of the living room and spread its branches over the couches, leaves stretching toward the sunlight streaming in weakly through the dusty windows.

One dark ear flicked at the sound of scrabbling in the far corner of the house, and he watched Wilson dart into what used to be a kitchen to catch the mice scurrying about; no doubt the tom would feast today.

Oddly at peace, Levent Kartal sank on the couch and pulled a case and cloth out of his bulging satchel. He opened the case, tenderly removing the handgun from it and beginning to wipe it down.

Hotaru moved north through the pack lands with but one thought in mind, strawberries. Strawberry season had reached its peak and had put a spring in Hotaru's step. Rich, bountiful, beautiful, delicious strawberries and they would soon be hers. As a puppy, Hotaru had traveled with her mother to an old human village where farming was prevalent. The two often visited the ruins to partake in the rich bounties that had been left behind. Orchards and vineyards were some of the remnants of days gone by and Hotaru loved every bite. Strawberries and grapes were some of her favorites, although they both had very different tastes.

The blind wolf moved through the forest, her leather bag bounced against her hip while her staff swung out in front of her. Inside her shoulder bag was a specially made wooden box for the strawberries Hotaru was hoping to collect. It wasn't long before Hotaru managed to make her way to Berwick; the sweet scent of berries lured her to the old orchards. The whole was overgrown with plants, however Hotaru didn't have a lot of trouble finding the plants she desired. After nearly twenty minutes, the grey female had filled her box with the luscious fruit and held several ripe strawberries in her free paw.

Fawkes was once again absent for Hotaru's outdoor excursion. Her white falcon chick was getting close to hatching and Fawkes was on egg sitting duty. The red-tailed hawk had been thoroughly upset that Hotaru had left without him, although she had promised to bring back a few strawberries for him. The grey wolf thought about her chick, and what name she should give to it when it hatched. As Hotaru thought, she wandered ideally through the village and slowly ate the strawberries in her hand. All the while, she skirted d'Arte's boarders and hummed a simple tune to herself.

The little cloth moved smoothly over the pistol, again and again, until it was polished almost to a shine. He had learned long ago that some luperci were more gullible than others, and even if they knew some rusted-up car wouldn’t work, another fragment of humanity in better condition might in their eyes. It was cheating at its clumsiest, but still a sin and still worth it. Making a living was forefront to following the commandments of his vague religion; what use would he be to the god dead, after all? His pious nature remained hidden for now, except in the glimmer in his eyes as he cleaned the gun.

Finished with this unorthodox worship, the luperci stood and blinked as his stomach grumbled. It wouldn’t be hard to share some mice with his friend, but there should be wild plants growing in the fertile soil of the former farmlands. It still wouldn’t be much of a mouthful or very nutritious, but the flavors would make up for that. He might be able to pocket a few to give to strangers later on, whether to sell or bribe or gift.

Conveying his departure in low speech, Levent left the tomcat to his hunting and left the little house to walk the forgotten paths through Berwick. It was not long before his nose pinpointed the aroma of strawberries, red and plump. His mouth watered, but as he moved among the plants to greedily pick a few, the whiff of a leftover smell made his heart thud against his chest. His gluttonous smile softened and broadened, and he followed the recent trail gladly, stepping quickly but quietly toward the borders of the artisan pack.

And there she was, humming as she nibbled on a strawberry. She was even more beautiful in her optime form, lean and tall (or at least taller than him by a few inches, which was not that difficult). His eyes lit, and he came closer, letting out a low, wordless woof to announce himself so he did not startle the blind female.

Levent had an extravagant and charming greeting in mind, but as he strode up to her and came to a halt, all he could manage was, Hi.

Hotaru's forte was in woodcarving, not music. So it was understandable that she was no great singer like her twin brother. However, the grey female wasn't a bad singer and she did enjoy singing, or humming, the occasional tune. The melody that Hotaru recited was one from her childhood and a favorite of hers. Adrian had actually hated that one, most likely because the notes were out of his singing range. For the most part, the blind female hummed continuously and only paused long enough to nibble on her strawberries. The fresh fragrances and rich taste made her mouth sing and she continued to hum once the bite had been swallowed.

Wrapped in the comfort of her own little world, Hotaru failed to notice the approaching footsteps and the scent of another. With the delicious taste of ripened fruit in her mouth and her own song ringing in her ears, she had almost completely blocked off the outside world. She was caught off guard and unaware when a familiar voice broke through her black world. The lithe female stopped her gait and red ears swiveled to listen. Her nose picked up the loner's familiar scent and Hotaru blinked. She was surprised, but her happy mood prevented her from taking the intrusion in bad humor.

Turning, she gave a little smile and lowered her hand that was filled with strawberries. She let her walking staff rest idly by her side as her tail wagged slightly behind her. "Hello Levent." Truth be told, Hotaru didn't know what to think about their meeting. They had met on such bad terms and parted on a strange note. The blind female didn't know whether to be happy, sad, or uneasy about their meeting. She couldn't decide if it was awkward or natural, so she defaulted to her polite mask. "Care for a strawberry?"

The Turkish wolf waited with unusual excitement and nerves for her response, not sure if she absolutely hated him from their last meeting or if she was willing to let bygones be bygones. He almost held his breath as her ruddy ears turned, but she only bestowed a small smile upon him and returned the greeting. Her lovely auburn eyes betrayed nothing positive or negative, and he had to remind himself once again that they could not see. With that knowledge, the courtesy grin on his lips faded away, and he glanced down at his feet.

Her offer made the smile return, however. I would love one, he answered warmly, and reached for one on her palm. It wasn’t until his hand hovered over hers that he realized he should have waited for her to hold it out, but he only reached with his other hand too. One gently held hers while the other took the strawberry, and it was with regret he stepped back again.

His pleasure was audible as he bit into the ripe fruit, sighing and licking the juice from his lips. He took his time eating it, all the while considering what to say to her next. Had she been any other female, he might have teased her with a question, such as asking if she’d fought any cougars lately. As dense as he could be, however, he knew that would only incite bad feelings, and that was far from his goal. Swallowing the last bite, he tossed the leafy bit into the grass.

It’s good to meet you again, Levent said cordially, his voice so light one might not think he’d chosen his words very carefully. I noticed this town was near your pack; do you come here often? At last some playfulness cloaked his words, but the question was genuine.

The best way to describe Hotaru would to say that she was lonely and sad. It wasn't that she was upset by her lack of eyesight. If anything, she had already accepted that reality and no longer questioned her disability. She found that she wasn't as impaired as one might think, just a little inconvenienced. What made Hotaru sad was her limited number of relationships. She had only three true friends, and one was a bird. She had been abandoned and betrayed by those whom she lent her heart out too and had come to the conclusion that love was beyond her. Even so, her wounds were healing and she found herself once again opening up to those around her.

Levent was quick to take Hotaru up on her offer and she found herself regretting the decision. The avarice in her raised its ugly head and she found herself reluctant to share her delicious bounty. Strawberries were one of her favorite foods, even if they had no nutritional value whatsoever. It was one of her guilty pleasures. The grey female heisted and didn't stretch her hand out for him to grab a strawberry. Yet, his hand came to hers so she did not fight him. His larger paws gently held hers as he grabbed a single strawberry and stepped back. It was then that she Hotaru found herself longing for Levent's hand again.

The contact with another made her instincts flair and the desire to socialize rise. Hotaru silently pushed them down with a smile as Levent audibly expressed his opinion of the strawberry. "They are good, aren't they?" Her voice had taken on a rare teasing tone. She too, took another bite and her tail wagged gaily as the sweet juices trickled down her throat.

The atmosphere between the two wolves became light and Hotaru found herself enjoying the company. "And you. I supposed I should properly thank you for all of your help and apologize for my rude behavior last time." The grey female chuckled a little at Levent's question and she raised the paw that was full of strawberries. "Only to partake in the bounty of nature."

She teased him, and the Turkish man could feel his face grow warm. You’ve got a nice patch growing here, he said rather than get defensive. He was so used to acting flamboyantly, each and every emotion multiplied so it was easily read by others (whether or not the emotion was genuine being a different story), that it sometimes trickled into everyday interactions as well. He simply had a loud personality, although right now he had the urge to be quiet and subdued instead of saturated with unnecessary words and actions. Sometimes he forgot who the true Levent was, so often did he slip into his merchant’s persona. Even Wilson, his best friend, only knew about ninety percent of who he really was.

Unexpectedly, Hotaru brought up their last meeting. His ears fell back into his mess of dark hair, and he shifted his weight awkwardly. <alt title="It's nothing / Don't mention it">Önemli değil</alt>, he murmured in his native language, although the message came across in his tone. You had a reason to not like me, he added more audibly. Okay, a lot of reasons. I can be very annoying. He grinned, realized she wouldn’t see the expression, then frowned at the ground.

He hummed in acknowledgment when she stated her purpose for being here, but then silence spanned for a while. His blue eyes flickered back to her, and he smiled again after a moment, snorting lightly at himself. Just though I’d let you know, he said brazenly, I am currently staring at you in a way that can be considered creepy. His laughter was in his voice although he did not laugh, but he was grinning ear to ear as he realized how ridiculous he was being around her.

Hotaru's good humor only grew with the encounter. Gradually, her anger had been subsiding and she found herself less grumpy and more affectionate than before. Although there was still a lot of residual anger and sadness, she found that she could open herself up more to others. With the addition of strawberries to the situation, Hotaru was downright jovial. "I agree, its a fortunate affair." Her tail wagged in full force as she inhaled the sweet scent. If only she had a good cheese, she would be set.

Red tipped ears twitched and her wagging tail slowed as Levent's voice dropped into an almost apologetic tone. Again, he spoke in a language that Hotaru couldn't understand, but she let the words slide without comment. Her earlier statement was meant to be an apology on her part and expression of gratitude. However, it seemed to her that their prior meeting had cast a shadow over the male. He tried to make a joke out of it, but Hotaru could hear the reluctance in his voice. She shook her head slowly, not entirely realizing the reason for his distress. "No, I had no reason to yell at you and for that I am sorry. You were only trying to help and I was acting like an ungrateful puppy. My behavior was inexcusable and if possible I would like to make things up to you."

An uncomfortable silence spread between them and Hotaru nibbled on the last few strawberries in her paw. She didn't know what to say to Levent, nor did she understand the reason for his distress. At last, the male broke through the silence and said what was perhaps, the most random and awkward thing she had ever heard. Hotaru outright laughed at his statement, realizing just how strange it was. "Well, thank you for that information. It is very insightful. I can't imagine that I am much to look at." The grey female, although she was blessed with some natural beauty, she was not the best looking female around. Her hair was short and cut unevenly and her body was adorned with nothing but fur. Although she kept herself clean, the blind female found no reason for taking the extra lengths to make herself look better like some canines did.

Hotaru smiled, trying to return the pleasant feelings that were once between them. She preferred his joking manner to the depressed state he seemed to float in. "Perhaps you could stop by my pack sometime. I would like to repay your kindness and I have a few wooden pieces that you may take some interest in."

It bothered him slightly that she kept pressing the issue, if only because he was taking the blame for his actions for once. It made him feel guilty that she felt guilty, and overall it was a muddled affair that he didn’t want to think about. I forgive you, he said evenly, and he hoped that would be enough for her to stop apologizing for a brief bad mood. While it had hurt him a bit to be yelled at, he’d obviously had no lasting emotional scars from it.

After that brief argument, the mood was successfully lightened; the blind she-wolf laughed and brought a grin to his face. Just thought you should be in the know, he replied warmly to her thanks, and snorted when she downplayed her beauty. It was true that she probably wouldn’t stop hearts, especially in Europe, but he was tired of gaudy faces and loud colors and itchy fabrics. Simple was nice right now, and he was attracted to that simplicity as well as what was hidden behind that timber face and auburn eyes.

Well, you can’t see other staring creepily, so you don’t know that, he went on. But I’ll let you know about that, too. Somehow, his failures were funny, and he was suppressing laughter even as he stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked back at the blue sky.

Dark ears flicked at her last offer, and he smiled. You carve? he asked, then went on to more properly after. That would be wonderful. Next time I drop by here, I’ll be sure to call for you. His tail swaying idly behind him, he frowned and asked thoughtfully, What is your pack like, Hotaru?

WC: 396

After their brief apology session where both Hotaru and Levent tried to take the fault for their previous meeting, the atmosphere became lighthearted. The blind female couldn't figure out if Levent was simply awkward around her, or just awkward in general. Either way, the conversation was intriguing and one she never imagined she would have. His description of his actions was humorous and even a little flattering. As Hotaru tried to downplay her looks, a gruff snort came from Levent to show his disapproval. Hotaru didn't fight his opinion, although she felt that he was wrong. After all, how could a wolf who had betrayed so many times be beautiful?

By that time, Hotaru had an almost permanent smile on her face and her tail wagged slowly. The male's words almost reminded her of her brother and father. They too seemed to have it out for any male who tried to get close to Hotaru. Surprisingly, the comparison didn't make the grey female feel any pangs of regret. "My hero." Playful sarcasm colored her voice when she spoke in an almost flirtatious manner.

Just as many had before him, Levent found her ability to carve surprising. Even Hotaru had been somewhat astonished when she discovered just how little her disability impacted her life. She had expected to be completely dependent on those around her and unable to function. However, that was not the case and the grey wolf was determined to make sure that other's recognized her abilities as well. "Yes, I have been carving since I first shifted." As she had hoped, a promise to visit was given. Hotaru really did want to pay him back, although by that time she had learned to enjoy his company as well.

The loner questioned the Tessitore di Sogno about her pack and Hotaru found herself almost eager to speak her mind. It was odd because she normally found herself reluctant to give out information for fear that it might be used for ill purposes. "Cercatori d'Arte is a pack that has an intense focus on art and trade. I suppose the best way to describe the pack would be to say that it is a merchant pack with many talented artisans. Our leader, although young, is wise and has led the pack from hard times into a wonderful age. On top of that, it is my home."
