Okay, don't have any specific direction for this, so feel free to have the pups push it in whatever direction you want Big Grin 300+

It had been raining a lot lately, and that left everyone stuck inside the mansion. Savina and Kansas had no issues with this of course, being used to such things and having the patience that came with age. Their newest pups, on the other hand, were getting quite antsy. It was only recently that they were gaining the freedom to explore the mansion and the lands around it and having to be stuck inside was incredibly unideal for the curious little wolves. It was mostly Artemis who was annoyed by this, but her loud complaints more than made up for those that her siblings did not share. Raindrops tapped constantly on the window of their room and, getting exasperated, Savina suggested that they all take a nap and hope that once they woke the rain would be past and they could all go out on a little excursion. After some mumbles and grumbles, the little ones agreed, and they all curled up for a nice early afternoon nap.

A couple hours had passed when her emerald oculars slowly opened back up to the world. The mother lay there lazily for a few moments, letting herself wake up while she was comforted by the scents and warmth of her mate and young children. Then she stretched out her slender neck, yawning widely. It wasn't until then that her ears noted the void of sounds outside the soft breathing of her family. Looking out the window she saw faint rays of light scattered across the sky. Of course Savina had no idea if it would stop raining when their nap was finished, and hadn't been relishing the idea of calming the pups down if it hadn't, but thankfully the gods had taken pity on the cooped up family and ceased its pouring for the time being.

The Commander gently nosed each of the pups and then Kansas in turn, urging them awake. "Wake up my darlings, the rain has stopped," she cooed to them. As they roused themselves she looked over Artemis, Silvano, and Parker. "The rain was nice enough to stop for you, so what is it that you would like to do?" They probably wouldn't be able to travel too far, for they were still young and the ground would be soggy, but they could take a little trip.

300+ words.

The idea of taking a nap had certainly not been exciting for the rambunctious little puppy, but Artemis had complied, much to her dismay. Soft blue eyes had fluttered open many times during the beginning of their nap, the silver-tipped puppy hoping beyond hope that she would look outside to see that the rain had stopped. No matter how many times she peered out anxiously, though, it did not net her the response she wanted: it still rained. Eventually, the puppy had fallen asleep, though she had fought it tooth and nail. She did not want to sleep, she wanted to go play and explore and do a lot of fun things! She wanted to go outside and do stuff out there, too! The mansion was just not enough for the little girl.

When she felt the gentle nudge of her mother's nose, Artemis was up as fast as lightning, bouncing in her spot on the bed. It seemed she had not been sleeping very soundly, considering how quickly she woke up. She grinned excitedly, tail wagging fast enough to possibly hurt something. "Are we gonna go out now, Momma? Are we going to go do something?" she yipped, still bouncing in the spot where she stood. Briefly, she remembered having been scolded at one point or another for jumping on the bed—some such ridiculousness that she could hurt herself—so she quickly plopped herself down, tongue hanging out as she smiled hopefully at her mother. She was the first one up, and she was getting very anxious to go do something!

She really wanted to pounce on her brother and sister and make them wake up, but she did not think that they would appreciate it. She had done it enough times to know this for a fact, actually. Instead, she bounced up again, bounding to the edge of the bed, her butt wiggling in the air as she tried not to fall off the edge. "Come oooon, let's go!" The little Marino was not very good at being patient, and her mother had told them they'd go do something. Naturally, she was giddy with excitement, which caused her to topple off the bed in a heap.

Parker's joining the party! (and I requested that the post by Ruri be deleted. Sorry about that. ^^'

Golden orbs flickered open as the cinnamon and white Sadira pup slowly awoke from her nap. With a pronounced yawn, the quiet girl began to unwind herself from the tightly curled ball she had formed in order to sleep. Mama, and now Artemis had called the rest of them awake, Artemis more emphatically than mama, but now she was awake. Unlike most times she did not have her lamb with her, having chosen to hide it rather than sleep with it. While she would have enjoyed sleeping with the soft, white, plush toy as her pillow, Parker had traded it for the warmth and comfort of her family's presence.

Eventually, the dainty pup stood up, stretching her stiff, puppy muscles before scampering over to her mom. Walking on the bed was decidedly more difficult than walking on solid ground, but Parker had become used to it. Upon reaching her mother's side, the cinnamon toned pup leaned up towards her mother's face and planted a 'Good morning' kiss on her cheek. Of course, it wasn't morning, but people always seemed to say that after waking up, seemingly out of habit. Parker had not said anything verbally, but her quiet greeting to her mother likely said just as much as if she had done so with words. She would greet daddy whenever he woke up, which she guessed would be fairly soon.

Turning to Artemis, Parker couldn't help but smile both in amusement and excitement. Her sister always seemed more than ready to express the excitement of the entire group. Why did Parker need to try and speak when her sister did a fine job on her own urging everyone to get going. Parker was just as excited and eager to go explore, but as always she chose to sit quietly and wait. Already at a young age she had found that sitting and listening often led to learning much more than if one spoke all the time.

The moment their mother had mentioned a nap, the Sadira pup's eyes shot straight at his energetic sister, who he knew would be against them all sleeping. Where did she get all that energy from? Silvano had settled down easily, curling up next to his mother and father without a second thought as to what Artemis was going to do. He had a far easier time reaching slumber than this oldest younger sister, but the pup had always exercised some kind of control over his mind, at least in regards to when he slept.

Butterflies chased him down the halls, and he slid to a halt, hearing his mother's voice echoing down toward him. Silvano spun around, trying to find the source of the call, but all he saw behind him was blinding, white light. Whimpering, he moved his paw to cover his eyes. Artemis's voice came too, and he knew he was waking up. But he did not want to. He felt the bed move and he only squinted his eyes together tighter. It still felt like it was raining and Silvano felt tired from it. Artemis was excited to go, and Parker did not make any sound. Silvano grumbled, uncovering his eyes as he watched his siblings.

He rose, stretching out and giving a huge yawn. A glance outside told him that the rain had ceased to fall, meaning they were definitely going outside. Artemis was certain excited and so was Parker now that he got a good look at her. She did not say much but her body language told him what he needed to know. Artemis questioned their mother, and he grinned his little puppy grin up at Savina. "Momma, are we going outside because the rain stopped?" he asked, shakily stepping on the bed. Silvano tumbled into Parker as he lost his footing to the uneven bed just as Artemis tumbled off the bed. "Artemiiiiiis," he cried, slightly exasperated with her. She just had to learn to wait. "Momma, Artie is really excited to gooo."

Kansas was sympathetic to his childrens' desires to be out of doors. The rain was so severe that for the past few days, there had been nothing to do that was no within the mansion — and the confines of a human building were never enough for growing wolf puppies to be satisfied by. They needed to get outside to stretch their muscles and have some fun, as even the pale father knew that a dark house could strain one's mood easily. Savina was tired, and he sensed that she would suggest a nap before she did, just to kill time and give her an excuse to get some much-needed rest. Naps were always a fine way to pass the time for the ghostly male, so he went along with the idea and curled up among his pile of family to sleep the hours away.

The heavy thud resulting of Artemis' squirmy antics was what finally awakened Kansas from dreamless sleep. He lifted his face from his paws with a startled jerk and blinked sleep out of his turquoise eyes. Hnn? he murmured, glancing off the side of the bed to see his silvery daughter there against the floor. Silvano was imploring that his sister wished to leave... leave where? Suddenly alert, the eldest Sadira of the group glanced toward the window to see that, as Savina had hoped, it was no longer raining. That was spectacular. Now they could get the children outside for some much-needed play — the notion was so appealing that he felt excited himself. Kansas stretched toward Savina and graced her cheek with a flick of his tongue, then jumped from the bed to the floor, his tail wagging serenely. He nosed Artemis, knowing she was probably discouraged by her loss of footing, and spoke in a cheery tone. So where're we off to? It was up to them, in his eyes. He just wanted to get out of these walls.

Erin is back now! XD 300+

One by one the pups stirred from sleep and began to move around. Unsurprisingly, Artemis was up like a shot at the lightest hint of a nudge and was already speaking excitably. Savina was about to scold her for jumping on the bed again, but the silver tipped Marino seemed to remember the lesson finally and ceased her possibly dangerous jumping. The mother was also glad to see that Artemis didn't pounce on her brother and sister to wake them up. Strong willed as the girl was, at least she was learning not to do some things. "Yes Artemis, we are, as soon as everyone else wakes up. It won't be long," she assured, knowing that question would come if she didn't answer it now.

The next up was Parker who carefully plodded her way over to her to give her a nice kiss. Savina smiled broadly, returning the loving gesture to her silent girl. "Are you excited to go out too, Parker?" The answer didn't take long to come, for as always her expression told all that was needed. She could see the excitement glowing in her face and eyes. Silvano unwilling woke up then as well, blearily looked first at Artemis and then at Parker. He began to walk on the bed too, but he wasn't able to keep his balance and tumbled against Parker and herself just as Artemis fell off the bed. The sound of their daughter hitting the floor was enough to finally wake Kansas, also. "Aretmis! What have I told you?" the mother said, exasperated. Hopefully she hadn't hurt herself. "I know she is, Silvano, but she needs to be more patient like you and Parker. She also needs to be more careful," she said before licking her son's head.

Kansas gave her a quick lick before he jumped to the floor and checked on their fallen pup. Shaking her head, Savina also rose and one by one picked Parker and Silvano up to place them on the ground as well. Once they were all together on the floor, she chimed in on her mate's question. "Yes, where do you all want to go?" This was their pups' expedition, they were just there to follow and have fun with them.

Well, falling off the bed had been embarrassing, but that was no matter. She was too excited! Artemis was very anxious to get out of the mansion, and having everyone care about her toppling off the bed was just going to slow them down. Besides, she wasn't hurt. "I knoooow, momma," she muttered, but she still wiggled with delight when her father came to check on her. She didn't know why Parker and Silvano weren't more excited to go out, but maybe she was just so excited to account for all of them. And she didn't want to be patient or even careful, no matter what her momma said. Light blue eyes found her father's, such a similar shade, the excitement obvious within their young depths. She licked at his nose affectionately before rising, scrambling to her feet and putting her paws up against the side of the bed, tail wagging behind her very, very rapidly.

Where did she want to go? The answer was obvious, in her very excited opinion. "Everywhere!" she answered boisterously. She did not really know where she could go in the pack's territory. "Where is something exciting? I want to have fun!" She was too young to know where was a good place to go, not yet any way.

Sure enough everyone was waking up now. Parker watched as Silvano awoke and groggily tried to walk on the bed for tumbling into her and mama. The tiny Sadira pup released a giggle as she felt herself slightly squished underneath her brother's larger form. She knew he must have been really tired to fall over like this. Last but not least, Daddy woke up, kissed mama and then hopped down to help Artemis. Parker had been a little worried for her sister who always seemed to be getting into some sort of trouble. However, seeing Artemis' smiling face poking up over the side of the bed quickly reassured the sunshine girl that her sister was alright.

Slowly but surely mama put Parker and her brother on the floor, where the cinnamon and sugar pup pondered her father's recent question which was quickly echoed by their mother. Where did they want to go? Surely there were lots of choices. Artemis quickly selected everywhere, which Parker knew was an impossibility. Parker would be glad to go wherever they decided, and as usual she felt incapable of voicing her opinion correctly so she remained her regular, quiet self. Slowly but surely Parker was learning, she heard everyone speak and was starting to feel more and more confident in her ability to try and talk. She knew what more words meant and understood the basic grammar, fairly anyway. It would hopefully not be too long before she spoke. For now, though, she would remain silent and just go along with the plan. Besides, her family always seemed to know what she was thinking from her facial expressions and body language anyway. With all that in mind Parker padded over to her father to greet him as she had greeted her mother with a nuzzle and a kiss. Once satisfied that she had said hello Parker reclined to her haunches and waited for a destination to be chosen by her other two siblings.

Silvano gave an audiable scoff of disdain, most assuredly directed toward his vocal sister. He rolled his eyes at her, though it was doubtful she saw him in her bout of excitement. Surely Mama or Father saw, seeing as Savina was just lifting him down off the bed as he did it. Artemis always wanted to do everything all at once, but even he knew that they just could not go do that in a moment's notice. "Artie, you're not helping!" complained the youngest male Sadira, youthful tone kind of annoyed at his sister. Why did she always feel the need that everything had to be done now? Planting his rear firmly on the ground, Silvano just watched Artemis be her ever perky self. Why was he not that excited? Well, he was, but he was trying to look like he was old enough to handle whatever they did. His pout might have ruined it a bit.

"Outside, Artie? How 'bout that?" he offered, slowly starting to grin, eyes swiveling up toward his parents. "Outside? Somewhere with, with lots of grass and rocks and water and flowers and bugs!" Silvano's speech picked up speed as he rambled off the list. He wanted to see if they had a place like the stories Uncle Jasper told him about had. Well, Crimson Dreams had to, right? It was a place of dreams and dreamers! How much better of a guarantee could the young puppy want? Silvano bounced onto all four feet, peering eagerly at his father. "Dad, Dad, can we see the flowers?"

After cheerily accepting hello kisses from both daughters, Kansas turned with a toothy grin to look at Savina, who was just in the process of scolding Artemis. Yes, careful, he added, raising his ears with calm, unassuming authority, though his gaze didn't leave his mate's face. Kansas was a bit too lax with discipline, a fault that he was trying to improve. He thought that he was getting better, especially with this litter and the trouble-making Artemis to test his parenting skills on a constant basis.

Artemis was up for adventure, suggesting the world as their playground for the day. The cinnamon sugar daughter, on the other hand, remained her quiet self. He wished that she would tell them her desires. It wasn't as if her opinion didn't matter. The girl just seemed content to let her siblings run the show; he noticed nothing amiss in her. Kansas smiled at Parker with encouraging light, turning to Silvano as he heard the boy call to him. Flowers, bugs, eh? Silvano sounded a lot like Gotham in that moment, the Sadira realized pleasantly. Baby blue eyes were suddenly alight with an idea. Cottontail Valley? he hastily spoke to his beautiful mate, with an arch of his pierced brow, wanting her thoughts as well as those of the children. We can go swimming there, too. The pups had yet to learn, and it would be fun to teach them. In general, there was plenty of adventure to be had in the sprawling and lovely place .

one of these days I'll stop sucking, I swear :| and sorry for the short as well

Savina shook her head, at a loss with her rambunctious child. "If you know dear, act like it," she said, nudging her pup's rump with her nose. There had been little need for carefully watching eyes and discipline with their last litter. Amata, Cambria, and Gotham had all been well behaved children, never getting into trouble or giving them any great cause to worry. Artemis was definitely testing the limits though, and as she locked eyes with her mate she couldn't help but give him a rueful sort of smile. There wasn't much they could do, aside from make sure she didn't get into any dangerous situations.

Their daughter's grand suggestion of everywhere and their son's quick annoyed response to her was comical and made it hard for the mother to keep her authoritative air. Their three personalities were so very distinct and different from one another, it was always entertaining to see them interacting together. She too noticed the similarities between what Silvano suggested and what his older brother would have suggested at that age, and it bright a bright smile to the mother's face. Her mate's ideas sounded splendid, and she nodded her head in approval. "A stop by the valley and the lake sound perfect to me, what do you kids think?" She doubted there would be an objections to the plan.

Little Artemis pouted, annoyed by the chastising tone her parents had used. It wasn't her fault she'd fallen off the bed! Disregarding the fact that, of course, it was exactly her fault. Along with that, she was bothered by Silvano's tone—why did he have to be such a stick in the mud sometimes? She knew that Parker was quiet, and that was okay, but why did Silvano have to be boring? Little Missa grinned up at her father, happy he had not chided her too much. Then she turned the bright smile to her mother, because she knew Savina only chastised her for good reason. Artemis knew that her mommy and daddy both loved her a lot, despite her energy level and crazy antics.

Her brother's suggestion was a bit more direct than her own, so Artemis nodded enthusiastically, bright baby blue eyes beaming. "That sounds fun! I want to learn how to swim! Wouldn't it be fun to learn to swim, Parker?" she asked, nudging her silent sister, wanting to include her in the decision. Both Artemis and Silvano were good about saying what they were thinking, but since Parker couldn't (or rather, wouldn't yet), Artemis wanted to try to include her.

The suggestion that poured from her brother's mouth immediately perked Parker's interest, her pointed ears showing her excitement. She loved going outside. Wherever there was stuff to investigate, watch, touch, smell, and play with Parker went willingly. So at the suggestion to go to a place where there were lots of flowers and bugs, Parker stood up and wagged her white-tipped tail, eager to show her approval of the proposed plan. As her father suggested a place to satisfy Silvano's description, soon seconded by her mother, and thirded by her sister, Parker nodded in immediate approval, her golden orbs sparkling in enthusiasm as she smiled at her family. Cottontail valley sounded wonderful, and so did learning to swim. Water was fun, she knew that much, and learning how to navigate it would be even better, because it meant more ways to explore.

With her two cents added to the conversation Parker scampered around, visiting both of her parents and looking up at both of them with an inquisitive look on her face. When could they go? Parker wasn't one to be impatient, but the childish excitement bubbling up within her petite body made it impossible for her not to try and move the family along. The faster they got to their destination the more time they could spend there today. So, the cinnamon sugar pup spent the next few moments turning from Mama to Daddy and back again, hoping that her pleading gaze would urge them into starting the family expedition as fast as possible. She couldn't wait to go outside again. After her trip to the meadow with Mama, Parker could not get enough of the outside world. It was just too much fun! There was so much out there to see and investigate and learn about. It possessed potential to include all of Parker's favorite things!

Artemis could think him boring all she wanted, he would not try to be like her and poke his nose in anything and everything. Besides, he was content to watch her do it herself; it meant he could learn more about it without the mess or the trouble that usually followed behind his sister like a storm cloud. But that did not mean he was boring! He could have just as much fun as Artemis if he wanted to! Glancing at Artemis prodding Parker for input, he pouted lightly, having thought he would be the one to ask her opinion on this. After all, Silvano felt himself as a better guardian for their silent sister than Artie was. Maybe that was just his budding ego talking.

Green eyes shot up at their father, then mother. "Swimming?" he asked, eyes shining at the prospect. Going swimming? Learning to swim? Oh boy, now the Sadira was definitely excited to get himself out of the mansion and out to the cottontail whatever it was. He started hopping a bit, bouncing forward in that odd puppy walk, toward the door. "We're going swimming!" he cried, laughing as he skirted his parent's feet and ambled toward the door. Now he was excited, oh yes. "We're going swimming!" Goodness how he wanted to swim. And play with those flowers, and the creepy crawly bugs. What did a flower taste like anyway? And bugs? Were they good to eat? Did they taste yummy? "Are we gonna eat lots of bugs?"

Feel free to use heave machine gun fire on me. 300+

As the bickering antics played out among the three puppies, Kansas stole a surreptitious look towards his mate, scarred lips twitching with the smile that lie in wait. There was carefully concealed humor in her emerald eyes as well. He was glad that he could share such glances with her, enjoyment with her support of the comical, yet trivial behaviors of their little creations.

All three were wild with anticipation for the adventure they as a family had finally settled upon. He silently watched Artemis prod for a response from Parker, touched by the rambunctious little female's concern for her silent sister. Next his eyes searched for Parker's reaction, little more than her usual smile of agreement that, thankfully, corresponded with her nosier sibling's excitement. Now that the fragilest of his children was satisfied, Kansas strode toward the door, letting Silvano race out ahead of him, the boy's energetic cries putting a smile on the pale wolf's face. At the front door, Kansas paused and spoke to his silvery son, simultaneously pawing the front handle and swinging the door ajar with his muzzle. Just promise me you won't eat any bees... That would be an... unfortunate mistake, he laughed, remembering the day childhood wherein he had unknowingly chomped at a bumble bee and consequently suffered a swollen mouth for days afterward. Propping the door open with a snowy paw until the girls joined them, he leaned a little closer to his son and spoke in a tone of mock secrecy. Ants... they're tasty. Between you and me. He nibbled the furs on top of the boy's head as his eyes searched into the recesses of the Manor, seeking Savina and their daughters, who could not be far behind.

The antics of their children would never cease to amuse her, or bring joy to her heart. As she locked eyes with Kansas, her tail gave a few wags, displaying how truly happy she was with everything. Nothing was every completely and wholly perfect, but to her, their family was as close to perfection as was possible on this earthly plane. Once the suggestion was made and Silvano agreed to it, Artemis was quick to offer her approval as well, and even went to nudge her sister to make sure the mute girl agreed. Parker most certainly did, and began to hop excitedly about the room with her other two siblings. Her mate began to lead the way towards the front door of the manor and she couldn't help the light laughter that bubbled up in her from watching the pups, especially Silvano's little march and song.

Father and son were the first to reach the door, and Kansas held it open for the rest of them. Savina carefully followed their two daughters, allowing them to bound outside before her. As she followed suit she gave Kansas a quick nuzzle before hopping forward to lead their children to the valley. "Come on my bambini, let's go! Last one to the valley is a slimy snail!" the mother called playfully, jogging just barely ahead of the trio of pups. The fresh air felt wonderful, and she was excited to see her babes roll about out in the open grass and sky. Today was going to be a marvelous day for the little family, she could feel it.

She stayed with Parker and their mother while they were still inside, following her brother and father. See, she could be patient! Inside, though, she was humming with excitement, translated into a rapid wagging of her tail and a dance of her paws with each step. She was soooo excited to learn how to swim! Eating bugs wasn't really of any interest to her, but she did want to see all the different bugs and birds and animals and stuff! She bounded out the door after her mother, running quickly after her at the teasing words, her little legs moving even faster than she thought they could as she raced ahead. Artemis Marino was no slimy snail, definitely not! She giggled loudly, letting the air whoosh against her cheeks and into her mouth as she bounded with her eyes half-shut. She was running so fast!

ooc...

There were certainly many exciting things to look forward to today, for the Sadira girl and her family. They were going to learn to swim, and on top of that Silvano seemed interested in eating some bugs. Why would he ever want to do that? Her dainty little head shook in expression of her own negative opinion towards such a passtime. Little bugs were far too small to make a satisfactory meal, plus, Parker found that they were much more fun when one could observe them going about their daily activities. She would certainly not begrudge her brother his fun, but she would not be taking part.

Golden orbs widened as her sister bolted off at their mother's teasing words. Parker was now the last one in line. Did that mean she was going to be the slimy snail?! Not if she had anything to do with it. An excited smile painted her features as Parker bounded after her sister, though only with the intent of getting next to her mother. Mama wasn't running full speed anyway, and she figured if she kept pace with her mama then she would be tied, that way there would not be a last person and therefore no slimy snails. Of course, it was equally possible that they both could end up last and be slimy snails, but she wouldn't mind so much if mama was with her. Parker was fine with anything so long as her mama was there to endure it with her. However, as she caught up to her mama, the thoughts of who would be first and last faded from her head. She was still having to run to keep up with Savina, but not quite as hard as Artemis was, trying to take the lead. She didn't need to run that fast. What if she wore herself out? Then she wouldn't have any energy to go swimming, which she desperately wanted to do.

The pup nodded, noting the secrecy in his father's tone. So it was a secret between them! But... ants? What were ants? They were bugs, that much was obvious, but what where they? Silvano glanced up at his father curiously, mouth agape at the suggestion. And bees. What were they? Why couldn't he have them? Kansas lightly nibbled the top of his head, and the little Sadira pup tried, and failed, to bat at his father's maw as he receded, catching only air.

As his mother appeared, the two opposite sisters in tow, the Sadira pup moved through the door, blinking at the sunshine in his eyes. But that abated and he yelped, bouncing into the grass with a grin. This was fun! He looked back, watching as Savina passed him with her long legs. Brows furrowed, he didn't bother pointing out the obvious problem with racing with his two legged mother. They were tiny in comparison! But she would let one of them, if not all of them, win. For sure. So that really only meant that it had to be Artemis to beat. Savina passed him and his sister came up behind rather fast. She got ahead fast though, and Silvano growled his light puppy growl as he took off behind her. He was just as energetic as his sister, if he just channeled it differently. He ran up behind Artemis, tongue lolling out of his mouth. "Artiiiie," he called, blinking at the sun and wind in his eyes.

That was when he tumbled, awkward on his legs. Silvano barrel rolled to a stop, dizzy from it. Head swinging lightly side to side, he shook it to try to clear it; bad idea. Opening his changing eyes to the world, the pup saw the head of a flower close to his face. All thoughts of beating Artemis, Parker, and Savina disappeared. He nudged forward, nose touching the middle of the white wildflower. Pretty.

Kansas had better notice his son's distraction or the poor boy would get left behind.

Savina and the two girls joined them at the door in no time. Kansas maneuvered with the door so that the entire party could exit and continue on their adventure. As the females slipped, he gave them a soft, Ladies first, although Silvano had left the confines of the manor, too. The ghostly wolf was energetic with the day's plans, eager to have some innocent fun. Beckoned by the laughter of his children, he slipped outside into the blinding sunlight. After Savina's declaration that the slowest would become a snail, Artemis and Parker sped to keep up with their ebony mother. Young ones were so impressionable — surely he would have done the same at their age.

Laughing joyfully, Kansas loped after them. Excitement, as well as the heat of the summer day, caused his tongue to hang between his jaws. When Silvano suddenly stopped to examine a flower head, Kansas sidled up to him and nudged his shoulder gently. C'mon, you don't want to be a slimy snail, do you? His words were teasing and full of mirth, a smile belying the seriousness of his tone. Kansas wished to get the boy moving ahead with his mother and sisters. The slender brute planned to be the slimy snail, anyway, to save his children such an unpleasant title.
