Walk into the Sun

It was a summer day. The sun had broken through the almost constant coverage of clouds, and through the holes a blue sky could be seen. The air was warm, but the ocean’s breeze cut through it easily. For a few moments she felt the blaze of the sun, the heavy air and the heat that surrounded her like an unwanted blanket. Then the next moment her ears would be filled with the sound of the ocean, and her fur prickled as the water driven breeze picking up the tide’s cool temperature and casting against her and the coastline. Mati had found herself clinging to the manor, those that she wished to be around were seemingly always there and Mati found satisfaction in being close to them. But she needed to break away, to give herself a few moments and enjoy some refreshing alone time.

Such a need brought the female south, towards the shore. But instead of frolicking on the beach Mati had traveled through the Trenches and in the direction of the rocky coast. Violet eyes looked out into the clear horizon. It was frightening, how far the ocean actually traveled. Even on the small cliffs that battled the constant onslaught of the sea she could see the endless waters. The castle was not something that could sneak up on her, the peaked roofs easy seen from miles away. Mati's travels were slow, lazy and yet she lingered closer to the old statuesque building. When the wall came into sight she no longer meandered but drew closer with a meaningful pace.

In the daylight there was not very frightening. She imagined that late at night the place would be covered in shadows and quite scary. But from the outside and in the light of the fresh day the Dreamer saw nothing too intimidating about it. A doorway, arched and built out of the wall, was the only opening she could see for some ways along the barrier. The old wooden door was only splintered remains and hinges as she passed beyond it and into the large courtyard.

The castle had loomed in the distance for what seemed like hours, its towers jutting surreptitiously above the protective evergreens. Rio had been chasing it since it was little more than a strange freshness from the monotony of the surrounding forest, but it was evading her. As a the land dipped into a tangled hollow, just below a tall rise, the castle disappeared from view, obscured. For a fleeting moment, she considered that the castle was just a figment of her wild imagination, visible only to her fanciful mind. She continued.l The young woman wanted nothing more than to see wondrous castle explore within those ancient walls, to experience its magic. She wanted this so desperately that it was physical ache in the core of her body.

Full of energy, though her pink tongue lolled to ease the heat, Rio sprinted up the slope of the rise. Ahead was more forest, through which she raced with abandon. Trees and brush whirred past in shaded color and suddenly, the forest broke. Ahead was a sandy plain and, nestled against rocky ground, the castle stood. The young woman slowed to a complete cease and gazed at the spectacle . The castle was as real as the grass beneath her feet. Her small smile was of triumph and glee as she crossed the fields, the sable-furred wolfess slowly making an arc around the intimidating yet beautiful structure. What kinds of lovely things had lived inside? The castle was home to romantic secrets that she could only ever imagine.

There was a mighty archway that rested upon the shoulders of a wooden door, hanging slightly ajar. Curious, the girl pushed the great door open with feeble hand, stepping into the sunny courtyard. Her jaw parted softly in surprise. There was a beautiful thing waiting inside, she thought in hapiness. Her sister stood, beautiful bronze fur highlighted by the clouded sun. Mati, she called, the smile gracing her voice, eyes, and lips alike.

love this thread already!

It was like Haven Manor. The blocks of stone had been wedged together to fit tightly and perfectly. All these years and the structure had never fallen. She guessed her house was much younger then this relic, and hoped that the mansion would stand as long as this structure had. An earth colored hand touched the stone, it was warm beneath her fingers, almost soft as if all the graininess had been worn away with countless rain showers. The courtyard was expansive, and she wondered what the humans had used it for. No solid evidence was left, and her violet eyes look up the base of the grand building, her awe comparable only to it majesty. Even with the years past, the once home of kings and queens had not lost its initial purpose to enthrall and intimidate those the drew close to it’s boundaries.

Mati was certainly enchanted. Coming ever closer to the castle she could finally see the ornate details that had been carved out of the cornerstones, doorways and window frames. She imagined that the windows had once been filled with stained glass, like the colored pieces of sea washed bottles that the Dreamer had found with Anann along the shore. Nothing lived within them now, only fragments. The tall wolfess looked upwards, searching the towers and marveling at their height.

A voice made her turn, her name being called in a melody that she recognized well. Her gaze came to the face of her sister, and her momentary surprise was lifted to show the same sort of grin that shone on Rio’s dark features. The large wolfess’ long legs crossed the distance quickly, and once she was close she reached out to embrace her half sister. There had been a definite bond that strung the two females together, one that she had not felt when meeting Rio’s full sibling Lucia. Rio, how are you? Mati spoke with affection.

Me too!

Mati was studying the stone intricacies of the castle a few yards ahead, and as she turned, Rio thought she detected the subtle awe in her elder half-sister's purple eyes. Rio wondered what Mati had seen, anticipating a closer look of her own. Better yet, she expected that the two of them would explore the castle in a few moments. First, she longed to give her sister her love. They hadn't seen one another for several weeks — or was it months? The sable wolfess lost track of time so easily, the days, weeks and months blending together as one. Years might have passed since she had last spent time with the Dreamer. She had missed her deeply.

The strong arms that had enclosed her all that time ago felt just as warm and loving as before. Eagerly, Rio threw her own skinny limbs around her sister, relishing the natural connection between them. Strangely, she lacked such a bond with her blood sisters. The young woman had spent at least a few moments every day wishing that she would see Mati again, believing faithfully that they would meet in time. Now they were there together, and the sooty Tuleta was thankful.

I'm well, and you? she replied, speaking the truth to Mati. She was finally happy, the loneliness ebbing as she matured and understood the world better. I can't believe we both came here, Rio said with a glance behind Mati to the castle, her eyes sparkling with cheer. She loved such beautiful surprises as this.

yayy!

It should not be odd for her, since Mati was not stranger to close bonds with those that held a small portion of genetics. But she had never known this with Brooklyn, and never with Salem. Mati did not miss them as she did Haven, and now Rio. She did wonder what it was that they were doing off on their own adventures, and it they faired well. But she did not wonder if they thought of her, she did not feel the need to embrace them the next time they happened to meet. Mati did not give hugs to all she knew, but Rio was a special sort and it was felt in the way she greeted her. Love was so easily felt in the dark furred females presence.

I am good. Mati spoke, her smile not fading a single bit. But its such a beautiful place, of course we were both drawn to it. She replied as Rio spoke her disbelief. Anything was possible, and as rare of a meeting this might be it could still happen. Just as it had. Violet eyes looked at her half sister, finding that it had been quite some time since they had last seen each other. She looked fully grown, though still smaller then she, but it looked as if she was no longer the gangly pup that all appeared to be at a mere six to seven months old. It was easy to see her as a younger sibling then, someone that needed the guidance that the Nanny was willing to give. But now? She seemed all grown up.

How are things in the Valley? The Church female questioned. She knew of their mother’s disappearance, and worried that Rio did not fair well because of Naniko’s neglect. From what she had seen in Lucia’s face when she had told Mati, it had not been a proper parting.

something short for our spree? want to spree this?

Rio's childhood had passed her by in a whir of faint memory. She tried to recount the details of the past ten months, but only a few events stood out to her. These would be with her forever, but now that she was a young woman, she was excited for her adult life to begin. She had decided which individuals were dearest to her heart, and these were whom she wanted to share that life with: her quiet, smart brother Harlowe; Haven; Toki; and of course the earthen-furred woman.

Yes, she responded brightly, her tail tip waving. The castle did seem the sort of place both of them would like. It stood behind them, awaiting the discovery that the pair shared a craving for. Hmm, she continued, seeking an answer in her mind for Mati's question. Things are good. There had been times of boredom, but not anymore. I have a new friend, a fox. I named him Toki, she explained with a laugh. He's at home sleeping, but I can't wait for him to meet you. He'll love you! The fox brightened her dull world in Phoenix Valley, a pleasant, much-needed distraction that kept her quite busy.

How is Crimson Dreams? Rio didn't know anything about Mati's life.

spree~away! ;D

Rio was a glowing with energy, and she was what Mati wished she had been at Rio’s age. Those times had been scary for her, the loss of her mother weighing on all her emotions and beckoning her to depression, the cuts that the black and white male had given her scaring her forever and the fears that he had planted in her heart spread like a virus. She did not remember glowing, and for that she was on the brink of jealousy, but her happiness for the younger half sibling was too tremendous that she could never be green with envy in the presence of the dark wolfess.

Mati listened closely as the lavender eyes of the Valley wolf looked to her, giving the small update of the last months they had been apart. She smiled when Rio laughed, giving a small giggle herself. The energy contagious. I hope to meet him soon. her tone was bright, honest and glad that Rio had a special friend perhaps just as Ambrose the hedgepig was to her.

Its good. Everyone is very well there. My momma Anu had puppies, so now I have three more brothers. She spoke, unsure if she had mentioned her second adoptive mother to Rio at their last meeting and explaining a bit further just to clarify. She had taken care of Haven and I, when we were young. She is another mom to both of us. The Nanny could not help the glint of happiness when speaking of the puppies that lived in her pack.

whoot whoot~

Depression clawed fiercely at Rio in prior months, all the way back to when she was a young child. The dancing crystals of snow had appeared as fairies to her, and she had been inconsolable when they stopped their waltzes from the sky. This was her earliest memory of her own depression, but it had surfaced at other times, when the unfairness of her life pulled her into an abyss of self-pity and her tears were plentiful. She knew that the feeling could come back — perhaps inevitably. But with the same energy that fueled the furious sadness, she was as intensely able to enjoy the happy moments. Her mind was a strange thing.

Mati was laughing with her, hopeful to meet her little companion. Rio was confident that she would, in time. The smile upon the sable wolfess' dark lips remained as Mati continued, giving Rio a closer look at her life just as she had wished for. Oh, good, the younger girl replied brightly, picturing the little puppies, wondering what it would be like to have baby siblings. Mati must be overjoyed.

I have another mother too, Xeris. She has watched over my siblings and me since Naniko... since our mother left. The pale-furred female had saved Naniko's most recent litter from utter abandonment. Mati's words had shed light on another parallel between them. They both were taken in by other mother figures, in the absence of one who shared their blood.

ohhh e'yeahhh

Light was too rare, the blotches of brightness feathered around the edges and faded from their sight too quickly. Her light was centered in the ones she loved, found in the hearts and in the way they looked at her, the colors that shone through in their gestures, in the energy that radiated from them. When the cold was unbearable, when her light had thought to be extinct she had found the one that could change the world for her. Cambria had always been there, but it was Mati that needed to open her eyes and see the blinding glow that she had missed. She was Mati’s sun, and the Church woman’s life had revolved around her for longer then she could commit too. Her heart had wanted her, while her mind could not bare to take the leap. She would be forever grateful that their conflict had ended and that her heart had won.

In her happiness Mati needed to squint against the light Rio shined, what might have come to sully it was not apparent to the artist. But in the moment she spoke Mati felt a hollowed portion of her heart expand. But the words were not sad, seemingly straight forward and told of another connection between them. Mati clasped the darker hand, forming the bond and holding the younger fey grounded incase she couldn’t help but slip back to the memories of the white wolfess. Life was too short to sit in the shadows of Naniko. She was silent in her support, meeting the soft purple gaze.

Lets go inside She spoke after a moment of quiet, then took a step. Their hands still locked.

I love how I said I wanted to spree and then took a week to reply. Where the eff did all that time go? I'm so sorry.

She realized with a brief loss of breath that she had referred to her mother by her first name. This was wrong and greatly unnatural, especially since she was in the company of a wolf who was borne of the very same woman. A strange sadness darkened her eyes, threatening to moisten them with tears, but she was saved from it by Mati's sympathetic eyes and gentle grasp of her hand. The touch was enough for Rio to sigh her troubles away. Now was not the time to think of Naniko — they must move on, and enjoy the good things that remained.

Yes, she agreed, giving her sister's hand a weak but loving squeeze. Easily she fell into step with the other, and together they crossed the stone courtyard to the great doors of the castle. The doors were ancient; it was a wonder that they remained strong enough to barricade the outside world. Tentatively, Rio grasped the intricate handle and pulled the ageless door open. She could hardly contain her excitement. They were about to have a most spectacular adventure, she could feel it.

XD no worries!

Rio deserved better then she had been given. Something inside Mati told her that Phoenix Valley was not good enough for her, but she was weary of any pack that was not her own or one that housed close friends of hers. Cours was safe, for Haven lived there and so did Strel, Anann and Vigilante, but the other places were foreign to the Church female and they made her skeptical. It was impossible for her to trust their mother, and impossible for her to trust any decision that Naniko made. Never again would she be able to, and at times Mati felt like she would be forever followed by the haunting past the white wolf left heavy in their hands.

But there was no reluctance from the dark colored female, her lavender gaze lighter then before and clearer rather then the cloudiness of unhappy thoughts. Hand in hand the two female’s wandered towards the castle’s doorway, her gaze drifting to the doorway and then curiously to the insides of the old building. The light was cut, though the sun generously flooded through the windows, and her eyes took a brief moment to adjust.

Inside there was what Mati could imagine was the entrance, a room smaller then what she had thought. To keep the cold out, she figured as she looked at the stone walls, the details that had been carved out dulled by wind and rain that leaked through the broken doors. Mati let Rio’s hand go, drifting away to examine a small statue that was broken at the chest. A figure stood on a pedestal, though not even half her height the likeness of the human being had more grace and detail even if it was decapitated.

300+

Being a woman who fantasized, Rio admittedly wondered what it would be like to live a different life. Sometimes she wished for change, a break in the monotony of her life was enticing. She could never pursue these thoughts without feeling guilty, however, for she had been told time and time again to be grateful for what was hers. Still, she could not help but wonder when and if things would be different for her. For now, spending a day away from the dreary place she called "home" was enough to whisk away the longing that otherwise followed close behind.

The room into which the pair walked was smaller than Rio expected, and it was also several tints dimmer than outside in spite of its high windows. The air was warm and languid, but there was energy circulating too within the walls of the great structure. The small, ebony girl gazed around her in complete awe. If magic existed, this was precisely where it could be found. Following her sister, Rio's eyes widened at the sight of the bust statue, admiring the intricate decoration carved by the skilled hands of long ago. Who did the statue portray; a resident of the castle, a favored member of human society? Rio did not understand many of the strange beings' customs. Even the pictures she'd seen in her tiny collections of books, photos and drawings of castles, kings and queens, only afforded her a preview since she could not read.

Rio glanced up at the larger femme. Was she a princess? she asked, surprised when her voice echoed within the room.

Mati had so very little strength against her imagination, her creative ability had been unleashed as a young pup and it was hard to reel it back even know as an adult. It was easy to fall into the wonderment that arose while standing such a grand place, a place with so much history that seems so unreal for a pack wolf. But unlike Rio she did not want to get lost in fantasy and her imagination, not for lack of magic and love in her own life. No, the artist couldn’t help the paintings of tapestries and candle light that would lead them from the entry and into the grand hall beyond it to be created in her mind. It was a world away, a thing from story books and visions of creatures that were very much extinct. But it was not a world that she longed to have, but more simply wished to explore.

While her gaze was lost on the headless figure Rio’s voice almost gave her a fright, the ceiling’s height bouncing the words back to her a second time. Was she? Mati asked herself, remembering what a princess was to the human world. She was beautiful, fragile and made of royal blood. This was only stone, and what it represented was beautiful and obviously fragile in it’s broken state. I don’t know. Mati admitted. Maybe. She concluded, looking at Rio with her own smile. She cocked her head to the side, motioning for her to follow. This place was big, and there was plenty of rooms to explore.

As the thought passed through her mind Mati walked though the doorway and into the largest room she had ever seen. The light streamed in through windows twice her height, the floor a swirled and dappled marble, the walls long and everything that still sat in the ransacked hall pointed towards the small stage that was raised at the far end. It was expansive and empty and yet there was still so much to look at.

Perhaps part of Rio's inner struggles had to do with her lack of any outlet. Her imagination indeed had the tendency to wander, dragging her away from the real world. She had nothing but to stew in her thoughts, and often she was lost without the strength to find her way back to reality. Her hands had never played an instrument or painted a picture, leaving her to ruminate her sorrow and joy alike. All she had was her mind, a place that was beautiful and frightening at the same time, a fragile sanctuary which threatened entrapment.

Mati brought her away from her wondering of who the statue could possibly portray, honestly admitting that she did not know either. The girl shrugged lightly and stepped alongside the earthen woman again, anticipating footsteps carrying her to the next room. Immediately her eyes were wide with awe. Stunned by the vastness of the room, Rio was almost tentative in taking another step. The sun streamed through the tall windows, sparkling in an orange-pink glow against the ancient gray stone of the castle's structure. There were rows of benches, littered by only a few silver plates and goblets. Oh... This is beautiful, she whispered to her sibling, still mystified. Periwinkle eyes at last followed the slightly darker violet gaze of the other to the risen stage at the end of the hall. Her white hand grasped Mati's, with a shy glance to the woman's face. She took a step towards the stage, wishing to stand upon it and marvel at the many sights from a higher viewpoint.

This place was something that Mati could easily reanimate using that things she had read in books and from paintings that she had seen. There were quite a few pictures the humans had made featuring the architecture from the years this castle had been built. So many stories and paintings that the wolfess felt they were obsessed in a way. The fantasy of Kings and castles and dragons something that even their kind enjoyed fantasizing about. But they had ransacked the place, taken what they wanted from it and then left it to grow dust and mold and crumble under the world’s unforgiving weather.

What they left still stunned both the black wolfess and her earth toned sibling. Mati wondered what it was like in the Valley and if there was anything that resembled this. Her own home was nothing compared to it, even the tabletop ornaments were too elaborate for the artist to simply pick up and examine freely. She felt as if there would be someone hiding around that corner, waiting to scold her like an over curious pup. Or that everything was too fragile, or she would be ruining the work of a common servant from centuries past.

But that was all she felt like now, Rio’s whisper resembling Mati’s own awe but more reserved then what the Church fey wished to do next. The female watched as her sister went to the stage, and with a wave of her hand encouraged her to climb them. The tall wolfess gave an exaggerated bow to the other female, just as she had seen in all of those old paintings, the commoners bowing to their graces. She giggled at her own antics, I guess this is where you would sit, Princess Rio. Mati spoke as she looked at the chairs that lined the raised floor.

Humans had spent so much of their time on buildings, ornaments, decorations, and clothing, and though Rio could not see the importance of such things, she admired the efforts of the strange, extinct beings. Her heart ached for the dead race; it seemed as if they had wasted their efforts, falling to their demise without a moments notice. At least the end of their society had opened doors for the next -- canines and other creatures could look upon the creations of the humans with awe and respect. It comforted her, calmed her sadness for them to think of it this way.

Rio faced her older sister, adding her own soft trill of laughter to the bronze woman's. She stepped with purposeful elegance up the steps, closing her eyes for a few seconds' time. She imagined herself with decorate dress, jewelry. How wonderful it would feel to be as important to others as the princesses of the human era. Opening her jeweled eyes, Rio gazed upon the elaborate throne, resting one hand delicately upon her chest, still lost on wonder; the fingers of her other hand grasping the arm of the great wood and velvet chair, onto which she carefully lowered herself. Yet another smile blossomed, flicking her muzzle in beckoning to Mati and waving a hand to the seat beside her. Care to join me, Princess Mati? She raised herself, her shoulders straightening into the proper posture for royalty.

Mati took inspiration from this place willingly and eagerly. Soaking it in like a sponge. She was already envisioning the paintings that might come of her and Rio’s adventures in the castle. Of course her eyes were bigger then her stomach in a way. She wouldn’t likely get a single painting out of this trip if that. There was so much that she needed to do already in the field of commissions, so many ideas and so few canvases. But the place was enchanting all the same, and made her wish to be in the times or in a place where they all lived in buildings like this and bowed and curtsied to one another and spoke in pompous royal tongue.

She watched as the other female strode up the few stairs, her slow approach to the throne and the wonderment that was left on her sable painted face. When she sat Mati stood from her bow and gave an elaborate wave of her hand and spoke a, Certainly her tone drawn out and as foolish and elaborate as all her other motions were. Her hands rose from her sides, fingers pinched together as if a long puffy dress needed to be held up as she tapped up the steps quickly. Sitting in the chair beside her sister, all her worries of being realistic out the window. It was hard beneath her, uncomfortable and surprised to find it so. She would have figured that such a chair would have been designed plush and as inviting to her rump as it was her eyes.

Sitting so straight was hard on her back as well. Thought these would be more comfortable. She whispered to Rio, as if there was an audience that she didn’t want to hear her complain. But I guess being royalty has its downfalls. She teased.

Rio wondered if the people of this castle lived their lives free of worry, without the cares and trials that she and Mati faced in their world. Perhaps riches, jewels, dresses and plentiful food did not surmout happiness as they were sometimes fooled to believe. Still, she could not seem to keep from staring into every corner of the great dining hall, wondering how it would feel to a part of it all. The trick was to find the small pleasures in her life, such as the jewelry of these past princess, but that was no simple task. She concluded that Life was harder for her than it had been for the people whom had once strode these floors, but that did not mean she could never be happy.

Rio giggled at her sister's silly antics, cupping a pallid hand over her chin in her characteristic, dainty way. As her laughter died down, she swept her hand over towards the other chair, making a path with the motion for Mati as if introducing the beautiful bronze woman to their subjects below. Next she extravagantly rested both hands on the arms of the chair, glancing to Mati as she spoke and laughing once more, this time more discretely. She noticed only then that her spine was cramping, and arched her back to relieve some of the stress there. Sadly, yes, she sighed dramatically. The small discomfort of the stiff thrones soothed her mind, for it meant that the lives of the princesses were that much further away from perfection.

Rio rose from her seat with a sigh, stretching away the kinks left by its hard surface. Next she spun towards her sister and bowed slightly, swirling a hand for Mati to take. Shall we continue?

lalalala!

Her legs would have become numb if her half sister hadn’t put out her hand and looked to keep up with the tour. Mati’s mind had fallen away into another time for a moment or two. It was so easily to get lost in her imagination here. She was susceptible to daydreams else where, even places that were so very ordinary, but here it was just so very easy for the artist. The bronze fey took the hand of the darker woman and stood up straight and ridged. Her back strained slightly, and she arched it as her other hand held the crook of her back for support. Trying to stay in character, even though she had put on quite a show as she stretched her back, Mati gave a small curtsy as she spoke with a falsely arrogant voice, I suppose. giving a small huff to make it seem like she cared.

She walked slowly down the steps, and as if she had walked out of one world and into another she looked back at Rio with a great big smile. There hands were still clasped together but she tightened her grip, and led her away from the great room and towards a doorway off to the side.

There was a big heavy door leading to the deeper points of the castle. Her earth toned hand pressed itself on the wood. It should be rotten away, eaten by weather and insects, beaten down by the raiders of years and years ago. She jimmied the handle, and the piece of iron fell off the wood when she tugged at it. She looked down with wide eyes, Woops She spoke with surprise, purple eyes turned to look up at Rio and she held back a smile knowing that that wasn’t any sort of laughing matter.

The girl was grateful for relief from the rigid chair, but that was not the only reason she wanted out of it. Simply, the castle was too vast for her to withstand one area for any length of time. She imagined that there were many, many rooms within the castle for their wanting eyes to feast upon. The pair of young women could not hope to reach them all before their time to part came. They had to keep moving if they were to see even a fraction of the castle.

Rio followed Mati across half of the room to another door rotting under the spell of age, giggling freely. She had never dreamed of a day like this -- throwing her worries away to run amuck and behave foolishly with somone she loved, all for the sake of fun. The girl was so full of joy that she could scarcely keep her laughter inside, so she let it all out.

Mati was trying the door, but an unexpected obstacle arose when the ancient handle fell right off. Rio drew in breath in preparation for another gale of laughter, tickled by Mati's bewildered face, but she bit her tongue firmly and smiled instead. Even her smile faded and she feigned a serious expression, remembering her vow to the princesses. Ahem, she voiced with imagined daintiness, pressing her hands against the wood and pushing with all her might. The door budged a centimeter, but even that small a shift encouraged her to motion for Mati's help. Though many other doors branched off from the great room, Rio was unwilling to leave the marvels behind this portal unseen without a good fight.
