Okay, so this is a crappy start. And I'm so sorry for taking forever with this. 300+

There were indeed a few unpleasant things to drag Rio down into the dark of a gloomy mindset, but, strangely enough, she was able to pull herself away from this place whenever it loomed near. It used to be that there was not a day wherein the raven girl didn't fall to tears, spending hours feeling a deep sense of wrong in the world. But without ever being taught, she always found the strength to resurrect herself into happiness again.

Over the past several weeks, since just beyond the rebirth of Summer, Rio had not shed a tear. She owed this prolonged cheerfulness entirely to her small fox friend. They had been together for under a month, yet she couldn't remember the feeling of her loneliness before. It was as if Toki had always been there. Recently she was occupied with earning his trust and with his general care, leaving little time for her to feel sorry for herself.

Rio had awakened that morning to the sun streaming through the windows of the cabin. Toki expressed his hunger to her (he was always hungry!) in the form of high-pitched squeals, and therefore she was up and outside in a matter of moments. Carrying the little fox in her arms, Rio headed toward one of her favorite places, Three Moons Ranch. There were always mice and rabbits browsing in its lush, green fields. They arrived at a broken slot in the old fence surrounding the ranch, which Rio's tiny frame slipped through with ease. She set Toki on the grass and shifted into her wolf form for easier hunting, and together they set off across the sunny field, noses quivering to capture the scents around them.

Nah, is fine! And no worries, I've been ten kinds of slow this summer anyway. >.>;

Somehow, the summer felt far lonelier than it should have. After Momma left and Lucia ran into Mati out in the old city, it seemed like everything was just trying to fall apart. The Marino girl stuck to lingering around the Valley lands for most of the month, yet it felt like she had hardly found any signs of her siblings around. Part of her was glad to avoid them, wanting to stew in her sour moods alone, but the other part of her was beginning to worry. She had spotted Rio here and there, but had never stopped to spend much time with her recently. Harlowe seemed determined to wander and avoid everyone himself, and she hadn’t seen any sign of Caprica in weeks. She was beginning to wonder if her larger sibling had taken off after their mother.

It just didn’t feel right, how much things had changed since they were younger. Yet things were as they were, and no matter how much Lucia took the time to ponder over them, it wasn’t going to make a difference. She dismissed the thoughts with a sigh and stood, stretching her legs. The girl had spent much of the afternoon lingering around the ranch lands, but it was about time for her to focus on something more productive. Some movement across the field caught her eye, and she studied it for a moment before realizing that it was Rio. Without so much as a second thought, she took off across the pasture in order to catch up with her sister.

The distance wasn’t too long and she managed to cover it quickly. She offered her sibling and her little fox companion a silent greeting for the moment with a slight dip of her head as she approached. Her eyes, however, shined brighter than they had all month, a silent statement of how glad she was to see her sibling. She kept a steady pace beside Rio, willing to offer her aid should the duo be thinking of starting up a hunt.

They were not ten strides away from the old fence when a beige figure entered their peripheral vision. Rio paused and looked to Toki to do the same, sniffing inquisitively towards the approaching canine. Immediately, she identified the canine as her sister. A smile bloomed upon her dark features, plume waving slowly at first and then more rapidly when her sibling fell into step beside her. They had not spent much time together, not since they'd played as puppies. Rio knew very little about Lucia, which seemed wrong enough. Then again, none of the Marino-D'Angelo children spent much time with one another. It was as if they'd raced through their youth and chosen their own paths very early in life — perhaps another consequence of their parents' lack of attention.

Though she wanted nothing more in that moment than to tackle her sister to the ground and shower her face with kisses, a hunt was at hand. With a beaming smile so brightly full of love that Lucia must have noticed, Rio resumed her easy, graceful lope across the swaying field. The smell of rabbit was thick in the air. Rio did not like eating rabbits (they were so intelligent and adorable), but her fox friend did not harbor such inhibitions. He trotted ahead of the sisters, then fell into a crouch. His sable companion copied him, and they strode in stalking position towards three brown rabbits that grazed several yards ahead.

In another breath, Toki took off, racing towards the rabbits with abandon. Glancing first at Lucia to ensure that she knew what their plan was, Rio followed her fox friend and they pounced in unison upon their selected quarry. The soft texture of the rabbits fur cushioned her jaws until she cracked the creature's neck with her fangs, feeling a rush of pity with the sound.

Simply seeing the smile that blossomed on her sister’s features caused a mirroring smile to spread on Lucia’s lips. The sight of her kind-hearted sister’s smile made her think of their childhood, and how they used to happily play together. They were hardly grown and already their family had drifted so far apart. It was moments like this, when they could find such happiness in simply spending time with one another, that she missed their younger days. There was nothing to be done to turn back the clocks to those good old simple days, leaving them only to enjoy sweet little moments like these when they came. Perhaps this was what growing up was all about?

She took notice as the little fox darted ahead and dropped into a crouch. Lucia was quick to mimic the smaller creature and her sister, lowering herself closer to the ground and falling into the predator’s purposeful, stalking stride. When the fox and then her sister took off after the small gathering of rabbits, Lucia paused for a moment, gem-like gaze sweeping across their prey to study the situation for the briefest of moments. One of the little rabbits off to the side looked ready to bolt, and Lucia decided to make use of the distraction that Rio and her little fox friend were creating with their pounce.

The sandy furred girl took off, veering to the right in preparation of the little rabbit’s escape attempt. She had lined herself up with the rabbit when it finally took notice of her and made the effort to dart in another direction to elude her. Lucia had anticipated this, however, and took advantage of slight way the creature slowed down to turn away, shooting forward with a boost of speed to catch up with it. A moment later, a quick pounce pinned it beneath her paws and she closed her jaws around its neck to bring a quick end to its life. The girl carried it over to where her dark-furred sibling and fox companion had stopped, pleased to see their own success in the hunt.

eww, sorry about the delay. ilu! and I really like Lucia too. 300+

Lucia's returned smile whisked away the needling worry that her tawny sister no longer cared for her as much as before, as if Lucia's feelings for her had changed. Perhaps all that had changed was who they each were on the inside. Still, she longed for those carefree days, wishing that she could rewind with her brother and sisters and enter the cheerful mindset that they'd shared as children. Maybe it was normal for siblings to go running in opposite directions, but that did not mean Rio liked it. She wasn't quite ready to grow up.

While she and Toki stalked after their prey, Lucia followed close behind. Rio's and her fox's hunts had been surprisingly simple, with only a moment or so of pursuit and nothing more. She only hoped that the commotion they'd caused wouldn't make Lucia's hunt especially difficult. As Rio sat back upon her haunches, one paw resting idly on the rabbit's limp form, she watched her sister with cautious periwinkle eyes. Fortunately, Lucia had the rabbit in only a few extra strides. Smile returning, Rio's ears lowered and tail thumped the grass as the emerald-eyed woman joined them. That was fun, she spoke cheerfully. Hunting was much more enjoyable when others came along; she was even able to let the rabbit's life go with silent thanks to the powers that had given it to her.

Toki had immediately begun munching away, but Rio held back. Her belly twisted on itself, nervous. She stole a few fleeting glances to her sister's pretty face, all kinds of memories continuing to invade her mind. She came to realize that she hardly knew who the other was. How have you been, Luci? she asked carefully, her tone sincere. Hopefully, it wasn't too late to get to know Lucia again, as long as she started now, at this wonderful opportunity.

ilu2! And Rio too, she's so sweet. :] Sorry for my short postie.

She came to a halt beside her dark-furred sibling, setting the rabbit down on the ground with unnecessary care. She licked the small bit of blood from her lips, tongue greeted with its metallic tang. Rio’s cheerful comment brought a smile to her lips as she sat down in the grass. “Yeah,” she said, nodding her agreement. Lucia always preferred smaller hunts such as this, as they were quicker, easier, and altogether much more enjoyable. Speed, rather than strength, was her forte and it showed through in moments like this. She was happy that she had noticed Rio arrive in time to join in their little hunt.

Rio asked her how she had been, and the question served to remind Lucia of how far apart they had drifted since they were bumbling little pups. She shrugged a little, jade eyes focusing on the pale periwinkle of her sister’s as she considered it for a moment. “I’ve been okay.” She thought that she had moved on past all of the confusion and pain that hovered over her at the thought of her mother, but some of it still lingered there, turning some days sour. Did Rio even know about any of it, or was she still allowed the comforts of blissful ignorance? “How about you, Rio? How have you and your little fox friend been?” she asked in return, eyes drifting briefly to the happily munching fox before returning to her sibling.

Yay! 300+

Rio was disappointed when Lucia's answer came with a lack of detail. She had expected that disappointment, though. It was part of the anxiety that made her slow to dig into her meal. The simple, but upsetting reality of the absence of closeness between them created a relationship that acquaintances shared. She could not have planned to hear more about Lucia's life. As a matter of fact, the sable girl found herself unsure of where to start in her response to Lucia's heartfelt return. Truthfully, she could have answered many different ways, but she took a moment to think of which to choose. She followed her sister's pretty jade gaze to Toki, who became aware of their shared attention upon him and looked up with doleful brown eyes, glancing between them.

Whats? Just answers her, he whispered to his partner, who shifted her own gaze back her sister with a small half smile. We have been well... At this, Toki frowned. Rio understood that he wanted her to share more. The two were linked somehow, the fox harboring deep compassion for his larger canine companion. He had the ability to point her in the right direction, no matter how insigficantly she became lost. As well as we can be, Rio finished as amendment of her previous words, her voice falling in volume. Another rush of emotion overtook her, causing her to look down at the rabbit she had just killed. Toki licked his bloodstained maw and then used it to prod Rio's kill closer to her, wanting her to eat. Slowly, Rio bent and began to rip fur from the animal's soft hide, exposing the flesh. She took a dainty, but large bite, chewed and swallowed.

She sighed. Silence had ensued -- she didn't like it. Silence was all there had been between Lucia and her. Much as she wished to avoid heaviness, much as she wanted smiles and laughter instead, there were barriers she had to break first. Lucia... I've wanted to ask you... Do you miss Mama? Immediately, she looked away, pale yet bright eyes falling again to her rabbit. As Toki was glaring at her again, she obliged to eat more of her rabbit, needing something else, something normal like eating, while she caught up with her beloved, stranger of a sister.

Lucia simply watched the duo in the silent moment before Rio responded, taking note of the encouragement the little fox seemed to provide her. She wondered how long Rio and Toki had been together, unable to recall any specific time when she may have first seen them together. Yet another reminder of the rift that seemed to be growing between them. But Rio said they were doing well--as well as they could be, anyway--and it prompted a soft smile to Luci's lips. Wasn't that how they all felt, nowadays?

The sandy-furred girl seemed to fall into a sudden loss for words, feeling the awkwardness in the silence that they shouldn't have had to deal with. She took her sister's lead and focused her attention on the fruits of their hunt, rather than the silence that seemed to be falling over them like a blanket once more. She took a bite from her fresh kill, and somehow found herself not feeling all that hungry anymore. She stared at the little rabbit as she chewed.

Rio's question drew her gaze. Lucia took a breath, then paused slightly as she considered it. "I... I don't know. I mean, I did, at first. Missed her a lot." Especially when she found herself in the quiet cabin, alone. She found herself pawing idly at her rabbit as she tried to organize her thoughts into coherent words. "But..." She shrugged and looked back over to her sister. "Well, I met Mati a while ago," she began, searching for a sign of recognition of their half-sister's name in those periwinkle orbs. "And she told me things. Things about momma." Lucia paused then, already beginning to regret bringing this up. Rio wouldn't want to hear these things. She would feel so much better if she kept the veil of ignorance over her eyes that Lucia could no longer seek comfort in.

The taste of the meat seemed to sour on her tongue, and so with one more swallow, Rio could eat no more. Like Lucia, she left her meal to age in the sun, which put a frown on Toki's face. The fox was silent, though, content to rest beside Rio and pant in the hot sun of summer's end, his doleful brown eyes fixed away from the two wolves. Rio hated the long gaps of silence within hers and Lucia's discussion. In her mind, they were chatting away, as girls of the same litter were meant to do. The image comforted her, saving her from the tears that were waiting like spiders to scurry away. Perhaps in the future, she and Lucia would grow as close as she hoped.

Rio gazed at her paws as Lucia fumbled for the words that would answer her question. When Mati was unexpectedly mentioned, Rio looked up and into Lucia's jade eyes, recognition written all over her face. She had no idea until now that Mati and Lucia had encountered each other. For a second, she wondered if Lucia loved Mati as she did.

Rio's expression changed, lips turning downward into a small frown, brows raising slightly in worry. She heard her mother spoken of in a way she had not planned. Inferring that the "things" Lucia spoke of were not good, Rio swallowed the lump of dread that had formed in her throat, unsure if she wanted to hear the answer to the question she softly asked. What did she do? Afterward, she recalled the darkness that she had seen in Mati's face during their short conversation about Naniko. Maybe today she would learn why it was there.
