How did you learn/hear about 'Souls?: Searching

Raphaël was, by his standards, a prime example of why never to judge a book by its cover. A rather intimidating man in appearance when it came down to it, but hardly able to hurt a fly. Unless of course that fly had taken to buzzing obnoxiously in his ear. Such summed up Raphaël’s morals. He was never cruel unless you gave him a reason to be. No, simply misunderstood.

The young man who’d not yet reached his second birthday was on a loose mission this bright March morning. As the sun shone high in the sky, limiting the fierce cold’s ability to seize the citizens of Bleeding Souls, Raphaël continued to hike in the direction of the mountain which marked the pack of Jaded Shadows.

Born to a pack far south of the Bleeding Souls area, Raphaël had spread his wings no more than two months before, giving up his future as the heir to the pack in order to live out a less famed lifestyle. A simple man who was easy to please, Raphaël moved quickly through the area, swift on his feet as always.

Nearing the mountain now, the scents of Jaded Shadows drifted to his nose. He’d sought advice from his grandmother before leaving otherwise unannounced; who had told him of the area and had recommended Jaded Shadows, for it was the only pack whose name had not escaped her, having once traveled through the area many years before.

Stopping abruptly at the border, the man distanced himself slightly to assure that his arrival was not taken offensively. He’d finally arrived, now there was nothing more to do than wait.

Hello, and welcome to 'Souls!

She scarcely had time to patrol the borders now, something she found to be an unfortunate shame. With winter refusing to ebb, the impossible tide that never faded, there were always matters of food to attend to and simply keeping everyone happy. Luckily she no longer had to look out for the puppies as she once did, for they were older and hopefully beginning to learn responsibility. But with a new age came new trials, and the whole pack seemed to be growing tired of the ceaseless winter. Today, however, seemed to be an entirely different story. Instead of spending some time reading as she usually did, she found that she needed to get out of the pack den and stretch her legs. Wolves were clearly not meant to sit on cave floors pouring over old human books.

With the very thought of a peaceful border patrol, Tayui had set out from the pack den, beginning her run near the western part of the pack lands. After twenty minutes of trotting through the snow, she felt the winds shift as she neared the southernmost point of the packlands. The winds brought her the scent of an unfamiliar creature some ways to the east. Intrigued, she increased her pace in search of the mysterious visitor. Her large paws characteristic to those of her specie allowed for her to easily maneuver through the snow, preventing her from falling through it.

The scent grew stronger and she slowed as she approached, spotting a wolf similar in hue to herself. As she neared, she saw that his golden eyes seemed to match the jewelry that adorned his ears. She approached with her tail held high and her eyes demanding of answers to questions yet to be posed. Raising her hackles slightly, she demanded, "What business have you here, stranger?" She regarded the wolf with a small frown, waiting for his reply.

Thank you!

Raphaël was not left alone for very long. It seemed that within moments of his approach another had reached him. Thanks to the direction in which the icy wind was blowing, Raphaël was aware that she was coming long before she did finally come. He had already labeled her a female and member of the pack due to her scent, but her appearance was yet to be shown.

Soon enough, she was visible to his golden eyes and he quickly sized her up. A proud female, mostly white with a creamy stripe and multi-colored eyes, one blue and one red. Aside from that, she seemed to be of high position in the pack, simply judging from her dominant stance and straight-to-the-point attitude.

Raphaël felt her eyes on his jewelry but did not flinch, quickly working up a reply to her question. ”My name is Raphaël Savage,” he explained so that she would not have to resort to calling him stranger any longer. ”I seek to join this pack,” he claimed, smiling softly so she could see he meant no harm.

Overhead, the sun beat down, though its heat was shielded by the chilly temperatures. Raphaël’s golden eyes explored the territory and he found that once more he was waiting, this time for a reply.

She nodded after the male spoke, glad she only had to wait a few seconds before he answered the question. She was thankful the male did not waste any time with exaggerated theatrics or a lengthy speech. Many wolves she had found pacing the borders seemed too quick to delve into a lengthy reply and too apt to explain their life story. Although Tayui did not consider herself to be rude or impatient, she could never be certain with lone wolves. If anything, those with no allegiance could pose the most threats to a pack, for they had no Alpha to reprimand them. Indeed, she exerted her cautiousness with rightful boldness.

She watched the male for a few seconds before deciding to question him again. Finding the answer to her first prompt satisfactory, she followed it up with another: "Many lone wolves have waited at these borders, and many have been turned away. What skills do you possess that set you apart from the average plebeian?" Wolves were social animals and those without definite ties to a pack would always seek one out. Out of necessity for food and stimulation, many sought the refuge of packs.

Raphaël stood silently as the female seemed to contemplate his answer for a few seconds. She had yet to present him with her own name, though he figured he’d be given it as their conversation progressed. Raphaël was no stranger to pack customs, having belonged to one for most of his life with the last two months being an exception. He had once stood in her exact position; testing the newcomers with their thoughts and bombarding them with questions to assure that only the most worthy were accepted. And because of this, he was not surprised by the question that followed.

The wolf’s left hand rose to one of his golden earrings, rubbing it thoughtfully as had become a habit. ”Hm, well, I’m rather good with my hands,” he said, looking out past the female in concentration. ”I can fix almost anything and can build quite a few things as well. I can also tattoo and pierce along with being literate,” he continued on, trying to figure out anything else that might be of use. ”I’m also fairly good with astrology, though I wouldn’t claim to be an expert,” he said with a soft smile. Hopefully that would be satisfactory enough, for aside from the obvious hunting abilities and the like, he couldn’t think of anything else.

She was tempted to call the male out on his long list of talents, but she remained silent on this matter. She supposed that if she could learn the language of the lower beasts, learn to read and write, and eventually tell stories in the three short years she had been living in the mountain pack, it was possible another could achieve similar results in such a time. Although she found ages hard to guess, the male looked young, which made his claims all the more fantastic. She also surmised that he was young enough and able enough to put these skills to the test should the time come. "That's a lengthy list you have," she replied with a small, quirky grin. "Would you stay long enough to put your skills to the test?" Again, she regarded the male with ardent seriousness. She had seen far too many friends leave, mates disappear, and strangers fade away. In her years as a member of the pack, so many had come and go that she was growing weary with the constant motion. A new face was always welcome, but only if his loyalty would keep him there.

Indeed, she had seen wolves remain in the lands for their entire lives, moving from one pack to another, constantly switching their allegiances and loyalties. No longer were they members of any one pack: they soon were only loyal to themselves and true to no one. It was a shame there were so many wolves seeking a home, but so few willing to commit themselves to one. Indeed, many had their reasons for leaving, whether it be by the beckoning of the ghost of a deceased brother or to help an injured family member, but it did not make their absences any easier to bear.
