Demon's Trail (former DdM subterritory), Overgrowth Sunrise
SSWM: 757

She returned in a whirlwind. It had always been her intention to return, had it not? She did not question herself, but walked with determination on two hind legs, her dress soaked at the bottom edge from snow, creating patterns as if from fire, climbing up along her calf and thighs in tongues. This place smelled like a stranger's place, and Vesle smiled. Perfect. Perfect? Where was everything? She sniffed at the air, but no memories greeted her olfactory center. Making her way through the snow, which should have been trodden in paths even though it wasn't, Vesle was truly a stranger in this place. Had she ever been anything other than a stranger here? She had left a pack that was not here anymore, and she was both happy and disappointed about that. Her coming was her novation, or perhaps this place's. Whichever, Vesle was certain of one thing: Dahlia de Mai or no, this was her home now. She might have been relieved that these territories were not claimed by another pack, if she hadn't been disappointed by the very same thing. She would have greatly cherished to challenge whoever dared occupy this land aside from herself. A vague scent came in from the north, but Vesle was more concerned about the dangerous paths she was creating right here. Little did she know that she mirrored a scene which changed her own life forever, even if she was never there to see it. Her gray paws that looked so much like Lubomir's tread with a certainty that Mew's had lacked, and Vesle did not fall through the treacherous snow and into the demon's jaws.

Impatient, Vesle halted to look around once again. Where is it? Creatures snickered around her and she turned abruptly to shush them, but they did not care. The little elves simply looked at her with innocent, all-knowing eyes, before they giggled, turned, and scurried away atop the snow, so light that they did not leave footprints. Vesle huffed, indignated. What did they know, anyway? Turning back to her goals ahead, Vesle re-secured her carrying satchel and carried on. If she could not find the place before sundown, she would make camp and continue the day after. It was around here, somewhere - she knew it. She could feel it. If only she could smell her, like before. She knew Emwe had not buried her, and Hanna had not been told of her location. Surely, the body must still be here. Vesle did not stop to think about why this body was so important. Why wasn't it important? She was acting on instinct, not rationale, as she had been for a long time now. Sore paws treat on, hardened to handle the relentless walking on sharp ice crystals. A soft hum escaped her mouth as she stood in the moist and unfriendly landscape, morning fog creeping in to add its own little layer of fresh ice atop the untouched snow. It was perhaps a very tranquil sight for most, but Vesle saw only an iced clearing, around which stood trees that were teeming with life. She chirped at one of them, a scary-looking vette that sat in a nearby tree, who withdrew with a sour face and a sneer. It may look ugly, but she knew that it could only be beneficial to her, its Lady. It could potentially help her find what she was seeking, however, and she turned to walk towards its tree, smiling. Her hum was hoarse, yet strangely appealing, at least to her eyes. Approaching the tree, she produced a series of sounds - a question - that may sound like babble to some, but which she knew the vette would understand. It would certainly require something of her, as she would require something of it, but this followed the long conversation that would undoubtedly follow this brief greeting. She did not know the creatures of this forest as well as she knew the creatures in the place where it all began.

The vette climbed from atop the tree, and Vesle sat down along the tree trunk and opened her book of secrets. Fingers with long claws touched its worn pages fondly, as if attempting to pull the information out from them by her fingertips. The gray female smiled and continued her murmuring conversation with the vette. It would give her its secrets in time, she was certain. And then, she would find her.
