Let Us Dream

Orin Takekuro, Sky Rhiannon, Hotaru, Bangle Guffawri, Taliesin dir Rhiannon, please come - but everyone else is welcome as well! This is the first thread for the ship plot which is HERE (click), in which Skye gives the idea for building a ship and they head out to collect sticks, read about boat-building, and brainstorm different ideas. This takes place on the coast near Flander's Fields. Smile No post order, although I'd like everyone to chip in before we get the ball rolling! If one of us hasn't arrived for 3 days, we can start. ^^

The idea had come to Skye yesterday - she had been entertaining the idea of a ship for quite a while, but never did the time seem more perfect than the present. To sail along the waves, to be able to caress the waters on a large ship, pack mates on it, trading, prospering, growing... it seemed like the perfect opportunity, the perfect way to get the pack members' spirits up, to encourage growth in Cercatori d'Arte, to do everything in one fell swoop. Besides, it would most certainly entertain the more distressed members of the pack - Shawchert, Sky, Orin, Taliesin, all could work together to help create the masterpiece that would launch them into their beautiful new future.

She stood on the edge of the coast, her toes digging into the sand - immediately behind her was forest, but in front was a wide expanse of sand and grass, and then the ocean. She squinted, looking over the horizon and into the ocean - she couldn't see anything beyond it but clear, blue waters that were calm and rippled in the wind. She knew that there were lands there, lands of New Brunswick, from things she had heard from Luperci. She knew that it was fertile there, that there were towns, human towns, yet to be discovered, items yet to be taken home and bartered with. To the north lay Salsola, a pack far too far to be traveled to by land - but by sea, by the sparkling ocean with its inviting coasts, the pack would take less than two hours to travel to. It was the perfect plan, the most beautiful plan, and a way to remember the beginning of the new year not as the year that Liam had betrayed them all, but the year that Cercatori d'Arte began a new future.

Without wasting any more time, she howled out a call - it was not a commanding call, but an inviting call that held many secrets in its song; secrets of creating and building and art and all the things that made Cercatori d'Arte the pack it was, the pack it was meant to be, the pack it used to be. It was a call to action, a call to create - a call to share the beautiful idea that she had had. And as she waited, she thought - thought of different things in the pack and her new idea, which bounced and floated in her head and was beautiful in its own way. She stood on the coast in her Optime form - the form the Luperci gained as an advantage from the humans, and the form that would be required in this project. The project of creating a ship would need nimble hands.

She came prepared - she had collected books, books on boats and ships and wood that floats or sinks. She had collected them from the libraries in Thornbury and, when that resource was exhausted, from Halifax; she searched and found many, as the peninsula Nova Scotia had many boats and harbors. She waited with the books in her hands, some resting on the floor, and with her own dagger strapped to her hip as she stood patiently for the people of her pack to come and aid her in the creating of what would be something wonderful.

Hotaru in optime

Word Count → 434

The grey woman itched to do something, unlike her avain companion who simply wanted to laze around. She tried several times to coax Fawkes off the roof, but the red tailed hawk was more than happy to ignore her words and simply bask in the sun. It was unusual for Fawkes to ignore what Hotaru said, and even more so for him to ignore her commands. It just happened to be that kind of day. So, Hotaru had ventured out on her own to see if she could find anything worthwhile.

At first Hotaru searched the woods, looking for anything that might strike her fancy. Unfortunately, it was really that kind of day and Hotaru was not able to find any branches, knots, roots, or stumps that gave her inspiration. Even among the multitude of tress, she just couldn't think of anything to carve. The blind wolf had been practicing a lot, and her improvement showed with each new piece that she made. Sometimes Hotaru would craft tools, sometimes furniture, and sometimes works of art (if they could be called that). Most of her early projects ended in failure. Now Hotaru could do simple designs and many of her projects were ending in success rather than failure.

Eventually, the blind wolf turned to the beach. She often sought comfort among the sand and waves. If she was lucky, some wonderful driftwood might wash up on the beach for her. If not, it was at least a relaxing place to go. Hotaru shifted the satchel to her other shoulder and replaced her grip on her staff before heading north. As the grey wolf approached the beach, she heard Skye calling out to the pack.

The pack had been very noisy as of late. Ever since one of the members had attacked and killed a puppy fights and arguments had broken out. Whispers of evil could be heard and the overall moral had dropped. Hotaru had stayed on the fringe of these events, never intruding and always pretending she couldn't hear. The grey wolf didn't really feel like a member of the pack, so she felt like it would be rude for an "outsider" like her to interfere in such distressing times. Still, a call from the leader couldn't be ignored, especially when it was a call for art.

Hotaru made her way quickly over to Skye, her staff barely touching the ground as it swung back and forth. Out of respect the blind wolf kept her tail down, but she kept her ears high and alert even if the position was slightly rude. "You called?"

(352) OOC: Ohaithar. Preggo Sky and Dorky Fella, reporting for duty! Big Grin

The call was heard by torn ears easily. Sky had been in her study, with the window cracked to let some air into the stuffy, tiny room. She'd been working on more plans for the pack, for her new rank as Council. Training ideas, new laws, new creations... new ways to defend the pack and to unify its members. That's what d'Arte needed more than anything else; a sense of unity, of community. They'd gone without since Argul's attack and now it was ripping the pack apart.

But she had to put it all on pause when Skye's call came through her open window. ...what on earth? There had to be good reason for it, right? So she stood, hand on her swollen belly, and waddled out, locking both her study door and front door behind her. Fella, ever present, followed along at her paws, keeping well out of way but letting her know he was there with a rumbling purr.

As heavily pregnant as she was, it took a surprisingly short amount of time for her to catch up with the Capitana. Purple hair, freshly dyed thanks to Orin, was brushed out of her face with delicate claws as the half-blind witch doctor offered her leader and friend a smile. Another wolf was there as well, one she wasn't acquainted with just yet. Good hunt, Skye. She smiled, then glanced over to the other. This one didn't seem to be looking directly at anything. Blind? Sky knew the endless gaze all too well. And you too, though I haven't learned your name yet...

Fella trotted up beside his adopted mother and sniffed at her paws for a moment, before rubbing against her leg and moving to sit at her right side, eyes traveling between the three women before settling on the books set out before them. Hey Missus Skye, what's with all the books? It was easy to tell who he was talking to; he never addressed Sky by her first name. Only mom, mother, or similar titles. Cool eyes shifted to look up at the alphess curiously.

The female smelled the blind woman - Shawchert and Erzulie had told her about her and she had seen her around the pack. She was the only one who didn't have strong bonds with others, and she seemed to always stay on the outside of things in the pack - Skye didn't want that, however. She wanted all her members to feel included, to feel happy and safe within the confines of her pack - she wanted them all to feel as though the other was family. Although the woman was blind, Skye wouldn't underestimate her whatsoever, at all - she had heard of her skills in carving and was in fact glad to be able to meet Hotaru in person for that special day. Although she was the leader, she did not have the capability to see everyone, especially since she had been busy; hopefully this would end and the project would be able to bring everyone closer together.

She saw the blind woman walking towards her, her tail low in respect, but her ears perked and ready - she knew that Hotaru was likely curious about what was going on here and why she called. Her suspicions were proven to be correct when the female asked if she called. "Hello, Hotaru; how are you today?" she asked amiably, a warm and welcoming look in her eyes and smile on her face. As for the question... "I did call - I called for all the builders and creators of this pack. I have an idea - we're going to build a ship to sail the sea. The pack hasn't built something together in a long time, and this will bring everyone closer together - it will also bring our trading places closer to us" she said, suddenly having a brief flashback of the Border Tree and when they all painted it, all left their mark, when she carved the ornamental words on the tree, marking their territory once and for all and forever. It had been a joyous day, a happy day where all of the members of Cercatori d'Arte had worked together.

In fact, it was working together that brought any pack closer rather than apart - packs were meant to have cooperation and closeness between the members. To build something would further this goal - the pack of Cercatori was a trading pack, and an art pack, yes. Being away from the pack for long periods of time was one of the aspects of the place; but another aspect was having a family, a home, to come back to after the long nights of trading and bargaining, the days traveling in a caravan, or by horseback. A place to return to, rather than traveling; people who cared about you and loved you, rather than just a hovel where you had no one. That was what Cercatori d'Arte was - that was what Skye Collins wished to reinforce that day.

She gave a kind smile to Hotaru. She knew that she was slightly detached from the rest of the pack - perhaps, however, the woodworker would accept to work on the ship, and gain friendships within the pack of her own. She turned as she saw Sky coming as well and smiled; she dipped her head to the new Council member. She trusted Sky, although she could be a bit headstrong and have a fiery temper. She thought that she could channel those qualities to good use, to something that would morph the headstrong into determination, and the temper into an authoritative aura that would not be refused. She hoped that she chose right; she gave Sky a sly look, smiling slightly; she did not know what the female was up to, but she did know that she had a plan. She simply hoped that the plan was not too... well, she would see, in any case. A noise interrupted her thoughts. She smiled down at the cat that asked her the question and looked to both them and Sky.

"These are books on boats and ships," she said. "And we, Cercatori d'Arte, are going to build one." Now that was a plan that would rival even Sky's craziest ones - she did not think it would be too out of reach, however. They had trees, dry wood to build with, a multitude of resources. It could - and would - be done.

(273) OOC: ...xD Poor Fella.

We're... building a ship? Sky's attentioned snapped back to her leader, brows pinched together in confusion. Fella copied his 'mother's expression perfectly, gawking at the leader in disbelief more than confusion, though. Why in the world would you want to build a ship!? Can't you wolves just- He didn't get to finish. Sky's foot made a bee-line for his rump and he mrowled in surprise, attention turning to Sky again. The look. Again.

He silenced and turned to sulk, wandering over a few feet away and sitting alone in his self-appointed scolding. Sky watched him go with a raised brow before turning her attention back to the leader and blind packmate. Okay. We're building a ship. Mind explaining to me why we're building a ship in the middle of winter, then? She wasn't questioning Skye, really. She was just stating the obvious; one couldn't sail in the winter and though they had a port inside their territory, that didn't mean it was usable. How were they supposed to handle building a ship, and how the heck were they supposed to manage it once it was built?

She trusted Skye, though. Though the pale wolfess had proven herself to be new at being an alphess, Sky was certain that she'd figure it out eventually. Everyone started somewhere. Her doubts were only based around Skye's lack of co-leaders, lack of council, but one of such things were remedied now. Though the younger medic still questioned the wisdom behind making her a council member, she wouldn't ever voice her doubts. She appreciated the trust, and had no plans in letting it go to waste.

A ship? Well, she didn't see that one coming. Hotaru held a fair amount of respect for Skye, she was the one who had permitted Hotaru to join the pack and who had so graciously forgiven the blind woman for trespassing. As much as Shawchert had helped Hotaru, if it weren't for Skye, Hotaru would most likely be dead by now. A blind wolf could never have survived without a pack, it gave her the protection she needed while she learned how to deal with her disability. Even if Hotaru didn't feel completely at home in d'Arte, it was the only one she had.

Still, the idea of building a ship was a little preposterous. There were many aspects that went into its making and just collecting the raw materials required for the project would be a daunting task. Not to mention they would need a place to store the materials and experienced hands to work on the project. Hotaru herself had a vast amount of experience in woodworking, although none of this experience helped for two reasons. The first reason is that Hotaru had to basically relearn how carve due to her disability and can only be compared to a novice at best. The second reason was because Hotaru had never built a ship, or anything even close to the same scale. She did tools, instraments, jewelry, works of art, even the occasional furniture. But she had never done anything larger than a chair.

"I am good thank you for asking Skye." The grey wolf leaned back a little, her right arm crossing her chest and the left elbow resting on it. She brought her fingers up to her mouth and stood quietly while she thought about this daunting task. She worked through her supplies and experience, what supplies would be needed, and how they might go about getting the supplies they were lacking in. As Hotaru pondered what Skye had told her, the sound of footsteps approached them. One of Hotaru's red tipped ears flicked back to try and identify the approaching strangers. Two individuals: one on two legs, one on four judging by the sound they steps made. Their voices were as unfamiliar as their gates, but Skye seemed to recognize them. Hotaru inclined her head a little and said, "Hotaru." It was a simple introduction, but the grey wolf was deep in thought.

One of the voices sounded strange, it had a quality to it that Hotaru could not identify or pinpoint. Whoever the voice belonged to, they were very helpful. Without Fawkes there, she could not pick up on details like books. The fact that Skye had books was a good sign, at least one of them knew something about boats. As the other stranger started to question Skye, Hotaru continued to think, she didn't move or speak. She just listened, taking in all of the information that was being passed around. The idea of building a ship in winter was actually quite intelligent. The dry air would pull the moisture of the wood quickly and they would be done in the spring so that they could start sailing the ship almost immediately.

There were still many problems to building a ship though. As noble as the idea was to build a ship to bring the pack together, it was going to be a very difficult task to complete. Finally the grey wolf said, "Skye, I have no experience with ships, what can you tell me about them."

and now we wait! Big Grin

She smiled politely at Hotaru, glad that the woman appreciated her concern; she then saw as they introduced themselves to each other. She supposed that they hadn't had much time in the pack since they had been doing different things, all of them. She then looked at Sky strangely when she kicked the bobcat, who sulked in the corner, and then asked the same question, albeit phrased slightly differently.

Sky had always proven to be assertive and dominant, and sometimes sarcastic when the case didn't call for it. Although Skye knew that it was her who had promoted Sky herself, she hoped that the long-time Cercatori d'Arte member would use the position to learn rather than take advantage of, to become a figure to look up to, to learn from, a role model. She knew that the female had a long way to go - she did not let the question and slight assumptive manner get to her, however, and simply shook her head. "Yes, I do mind," she said curtly. "I'd rather explain how this will be organized when there are more pack members here." Her ears were perked forward and her tail was raised high, as was her posture. Although many doubted her position, she knew that she would simply have to wait; working with her packmates and treating them all with respect rather than submission would hopefully bring them together. She never thought that there was anything wrong with having no co-leader as well; those things came in time, if they even came at all.

Her gaze softened as she looked at Sky once more, and then to Hotaru when she asked her own question. She picked up one of the books and studied it; then she returned her gaze to Sky and Hotaru both. "I've been reading on boats and ships extensively lately," she said. "I know that many Luperci came here by boat, and that it's entirely possible - some humans created boats by hand. Sails can be made from animal skins and furs - the sticky and hard clay that can be found in our territory can stick the wood together as well as vines, twine, and nails from the stables. I have diagrams, instructions, details, history, how it works, why it works. I will explain more in full when there are more d'Artisans here," she finished, ending it with the same note that she had told Sky. She was glad that the two pack members were here, but she wished to explain the project just once.

^__^

He arrived well after Sky and Fella, and after the woman he didn't recognize. After Orin's issue with him just last evening, he had slept in the stable, away from the mate who seemed not to trust him. He glanced at his mate, wanting to speak to her, but knowing when she was ready she would make the move. The fight a few weeks ago had been the first major fight they'd ever had.

Yes, it probably had been a mistake to go stay with his mother in Crimson dreams. But he had needed reassurance he wasn't the monster Sky had seemed to think he was. And then he had returned home, and that evening he had been accused again. And yet, he had stayed this time, he had made himself stay. He was a council member, and therefore he would not abandon the pack that had taken him in, the pack that had given him a home.

He looked over the pile of books curiously. This project reminded him of the time when he and others had helped build the caravan. He and Sky had been in the early stages of their relationship, then, and much flirting between the two, along with his assistance in building, had happened. He put his hands in his pockets, mulling over the Capitana's last words that he had heard about boats.

"The pack my mother was in, Syemv, they sailed from Russia to Syemv in a boat." His voice was subdued, though eager. The scholar enjoyed learning, and helping to build a boat would be a good experience for him. If, that was, other canines accepted his help instead of calling him a monster.

The moment he heard the call, Bangle made for the coast without turning back. When he had heard the news of the ship from Skye, the merchant could hardly wait to get his hands on building it. How he had wanted to travel by sea! The big blue had always excited the coywolf, but in his traveling days he never had a boat - nor felt he needed one. Now the possibilities were endless, especially for the pack, to traverse the open ocean in search of other packs and improve relations between the two. And, secretly, it also gave the gypsy a new reason in hopes of finding his lost son.

He brought with him the basic necessities he felt he needed, knowing that this was only the beginning plans for the pack's ship. Still, the coywolf's form made ringing, jingling, and rattling noises against the crash of waves as he neared the coast, a toothy grin stretching across the male's lips as he found the group already gathered. "Ahoy there!" He exclaimed, not caring overmuch that he was possibly the last to arrive for the planning. The coywolf's tail wagged from side to side as he stopped among the circle of gatherers, eying the many books and plans Skye had brought in preparation. "So, let's build ourselves a boat, eh?" The merchant was anxious to get started, though in truth he had no idea where to begin to build such a massive ship.
