I'm Not One of Them

The luperci were such a strange idea. He hadn't adapted to it in the slightest. The idea of two legged wolves moving around would enter his head, only to be pushed out and replaced again with the idea that they were a completely different species. It wasn't true though. It was a virus, mutating wolves into such a strange thing. It was frightening, and Tharin didn't know what to do about it. He had already been struggling with choosing a pack to approach, hoping they would accept someone as young as he was, still gaining experience in his hunting. A weak pack would like him, but he wasn't a luperci, making him uneasy about approaching, while a stronger pack might not want him at all.

Sighing Tharin returned to the small plot of land that he'd marked for himself. He grabbed the fawn he'd killed a couple days ago, eating the meat mindlessly as he tried to think over what he was doing. It was ridiculous. He was stuck where he was, not moving forwards. His thoughts drifted to the white wolf that he'd hunted with, remembering her graceful form as they hunted, her submission and caring attitude. He hoped that she and her puppies were okay. He hadn't met her mate, but thought it was probably someone very strong and good to take care of her. Was she a luperci too? He hadn't thought of that. They could look like normal wolves, so how could he recognize them?

Shandom rarely wandered from New Dawn, but on the occasion he did the white male found that he preferred to stay in the Northern lands. The south, he'd discovered, was far more human and strange, and as a creature who lived predominantly on four legs he didn't enjoy exposing himself to such oddities. But he'd been restless as of late, and the Gamma decided to excuse himself from his family for several days, intending to make visits to the surrounding packs - especially Anethama. Or, at least, that's what he told himself. For whatever reason, Shandom could not help being a restless being. He enjoyed the thrill of solitude and the luxury of a family to return to.

Whatever the reasoning, the white wolf found himself trotting at a rather brisk pace in lands he wasn't exactly familiar with. It was a good sort of loneliness, and he was utterly content until he came upon the scent of another, and marked lands. The aroma was mingled with that of a kill, and Shandom was sure to adopt a non-threatening, but also non-submissive, posture as he approached the area. Coming close to the border, the white male wuffed to catch the attention of whoever lived there. His tail wagged in a friendly fashion and a genuine smile was spread across his wolfy face. It was always nice to meet someone new.

A soft woof caught Tharin's attention. Dropping the kill Tharin quickly trotted the short distance to where his borders were, just out of sight from his resting place. His tail curled into it's naturally dominant stance, no longer having to worry about submitting to others that he saw. It wasn't long before the wolf came into view. He was older than Tharin, a large scar running down his face. It had probably blinded him, but he was still fairly large. Tharin held the clear advantage in weight, muscles covering the young wolf's body.

Pleasantly he stretched out, sniffing curiously at the new wolf. Hello. It was a pack wolf, a faint trace of a scent that Tharin couldn't place. It was the western pack that he'd passed by when he'd first come to the area, uncertain of whether or not to approach. The pack was new, but appeared to be very strong. Tharin could see why if it held such pack members as this one. Stepping back he grinned. Nice to meet someone who isn't a female. It had been the way his luck had been running, encountering only females.

It did not take long for a younger male to appear, and Shandom quickly appraised him. Where Shandom might hold the advantage in height, the younger man appeared to have him beaten in the weight department. It did not concern him - the Gamma was a warrior trained, though he'd long ago forsaken that lifestyle. Still, he did not fear attackers, though this creature did not seem eager to attack. His tail was curled up on his back in dominant posturing, which the white male noted. The Gamma did not outwardly display himself, but he also would not submit to this boy. It was not a matter or respect or disrespect, but simply the reality of lone living. If this male decided to attack, he would face the wrath of New Dawn - it was quite rude to kill pack wolves, and also quite dangerous.

But he did not seem unfriendly, and Shandom sniffed him in return. He was clearly a loner, but he smelled healthy and strong. The pleasure is mine, Shandom commented, his trademark grin still across the scarred face. I am Shandom Qi'Vaex, Gamma of New Dawn. What is your name, friend?

His tail wagged softly as the older wolf sniffed along him. There was still that nagging scent that Tharin couldn't place, but he pushed that aside. He would know if it was a disease. This wolf was clearly healthy. Instead he relaxed, simply taking in the presence of another. He wasn't meant for life on his own. If only he knew more, could find a pack without luperci, or a place where he wouldn't have to worry about being on four legs while they towered above him on two. Of course, that was unlikely to happen, since Tharin had lost the courage to even approach a pack with that thought in mind.

The introduction was brief, telling Tharin all he needed to know about the wolf. He was skilled, ranked high in his pack, someone to treat with respect. Reacting as such Tharin adjusted to a more respectful position. My name is Tharin Lupei. I used to be a hunter in my pack, but famine has divided us. I live on my own now. His greeting was every bit as formal as Shandom's, if holding a wistful note to it as he spoke about being on his own. Tharin was curious about this New Dawn pack, but wasn't too sure about asking about it, fearful he'd learn it was a pack of luperci.

Upon learning his rank, the stranger adopted a more respectful posture, which Shandom appreciated. It was true that the lands where he stood were not New Dawn's, but it showed that the four legged male knew of pack and pack hierarchy. The Gamma was not going to exude rank over this creature - they were, after all, in the unclaimed lands - but he still appreciated the gesture. He knew it was a hard life as a loner, and he sympathized with the man. His face was compassionate as he listened to Tharin's description of what happened to his pack, and Shandom dipped his head in respect for the stranger's suffering.

I'm sorry to hear that, Shandom replied gently. Famine is an unfortunate reality of life, but it does not make being separated from your pack any easier. But, if I may ask, what led you to the decision to live on your own here in a natural style? Unfortunately, we do not see much of that anymore - many of the wolves in this region try to live a....strange lifestyle, that my packmates and I do not understand.

The gamma dipped his head, face understanding at the mention of famine. It was tough for all when food grew scarce. Tharin's strength and age had helped him withstand it, allowing him to catch prey, even as small as it was, and survive until he was sent away with Akira. He nodded at the offered consolations, accepting it. Living as a loner was tough, but he didn't have the guts to return to his pack after Akira's death, feeling that he had lost his place with them when he hadn't been able to save his friend's life. It seemed Shandom understood the pain of being forced to leave one's pack perfectly.

The question was confusing for Tharin. He stared blankly at the wolf, trying to figure out how to respond. There's other lifestyles? He lived on four legs, always had. It was difficult enough accepting that luperci existed. The idea of them living a lifestyle different from his own was even more difficult, widening the gap between him and the infected creatures. I assume you're talking about the two leggers. I'm not one. I just live on four legs, I don't have the ability to go on two. I doubt I could live their lifestyle even if I tried. Your pack lives like I do?

Tharin seemed confused about Luperci, and it reminded Shandom of himself. He may have lived with the virus in his body for many years, but the alabaster male rarely visited his bi-pedal shape. It was strange, uncomfortable, and downright unnatural: he would not be willing to ever conform to the style of life so many of the wolves around here chose to adopt. And how could they have adopted such a strange one? Every fiber of his body felt that it was wrong, and the Gamma sometimes felt impure with the virus tainting his exalted lineage. The white male wondered if his brother, Odin, had the virus now, and if it spread to the rest of Etienne. Picturing the storied pack adopting a lifestyle like the ones in the Court was just strange.

That's what I'm talking about, yes, Shandom nodded, responding to his question. You're lucky you're not on two legs, and don't have..have the virus. I don't look down on those who have it, and make use of it, but I find it more of a curse than a blessing. It's why I went to New Dawn. Such a.... such a way of living goes against what we are. The Alphas, Zalen and Titania, have structure our pack in the traditional way. There are many luperci - two leggers, that is - who choose to live on four legs, and there are equally many non-luperci - wolves with the inability to shift. It's... He trailed off for a moment, searching for the right words. He always struggled with describing New Dawn! It's nice. It's exactly what I wanted. I wasn't born a shifter - I was changed when I was very sick, and it was done, I suppose, for medical purposes. But I don't like to live like that. Suddenly, Shandom realized he was babbling, and he shook his large head and laughed. I apologize. I tend to talk a lot.

Shandom confirmed that it was the luperci that lived strange lifestyles, not normal wolves. Tharin wasn't sure what he would think of normal wolves living a lifestyle different from the one he lived. He could understand there being different beliefs and culture, but not just going around and changing everything about them. He listened as Shandom spoke, hackles raising slightly as he connected the dots. Here was another unfortunate that had been infected. How infectious was this virus? Would he catch it just by being near the luperci? He didn't know.

He nodded his head in confirmation as New Dawn was explained. He didn't even have to ask. A pack where wolves lived the way he was used to, the 'traditional' way, as Shandom put it. It sounded nice. A place where he could fit in. If they would have him. There was still that problem. He was young, and unsure if a pack would want another vagrant in it. It sounds like a good pack. The virus can work as medicine? If that was the case, maybe it could be a good thing. It could save lives where wolves would otherwise die. It was something he wished, for the death to stop.

Shandom was alarmed when he saw Tharin's hackles rise - was the wolf frightened of him? The white Gamma wracked his memory to figure out what, exactly, he'd said that could be deemed threatening before he deduced Tharin was likely new to the whole idea of Luperci. He understood what it was like to fear the creatures, though he supposed he was now one of them. Shandom had enough control to keep his face from betraying the sympathetic and pitying emotions that whirled within him - he assumed the boy would not appreciate such antics. It is a good pack, he said. I quite enjoy it there. You would be welcomed, you know. If you wanted a family. His face was open and genuine - the male would cheerfully escort Tharin to New Dawn borders, if the younger wished.

But Tharin had also asked about the virus acting as a medicine, and Shandom sighed. To be honest, I don't know. When I got this scar, I was - obviously - quite ill, and I came across a woman - a two legged woman - who said that if she infected me, it would be easier for her to heal my eye. I didn't...I didn't quite know what she meant, but I do know that I am able to still live because she fixed my eye. But, here he laughed, remembering his time with Tourniquet and Adonis, it didn't feel great, changing the first time.

Shandom confirmed his idea of it being a good pack, making Tharin yearn for it even more. It was Shandom's next words that startled Tharin though. It lifted him up and dropped him down at the same time. He would be welcome. They would accept him and want him. The thought was wonderful, if it weren't for the nagging worry that remained. Akira had died because he wasn't good enough. The pack had been forced to split because he hadn't been a good enough hunter, unaware that his skills were high above that of an average wolf due to the time spent tracking prey during the famine, taking down prey where other wolves wouldn't have been able to.

He listened to Shandom's explanation, nodding his head. So what the virus could do was unclear. He winced slightly as the wolf mentioned that it hadn't been good the first time. Probably quite painful, like all sicknesses were. Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to see this pack. Maybe, just maybe, he would be good enough to be accepted in there.

A wide and friendly smile grew on his face, and Shandom wagged his tail eagerly when Tharin said he would like to come to New Dawn. Of course, he didn't outright say Why yes, I would love to be a part of your pack! Take me now! Instead it was a subtle request to see the lands, something the Gamma would be eager to do. His tour of the other Northern packs could be completed at another time; if Tharin wanted to join the moon-bound family, that had to be the first priority. Of course you may see it, Tharin, Shandom said, moving forward to gently bump heads with his new younger friend. He hoped the boy would not see it as a sign of offense; where Shandom was from, and in New Dawn, it was a traditional gesture of casual affection. He assumed it was like that for most wolves, but with the development of the Luperci he could not be sure. Then again, Tharin was not tainted like the virus. Not like him.

If you'd like, we could go now. Or you could finish your kill, and go then - or perhaps at another time. It is entirely at your discretion. Shandom did not want to put too much pressure on the man. New Dawn welcomed wolves who were called by the moon, lived a traditional lifestyle, and would be able to carry their own weight in the pack - it appeared Tharin matched all these criteria.

close on next one and start joining thread?

Shandom's tail wagged at his request. It seemed that he most certainly would be welcomed with this pack. Tharin's own tail wagged slightly as he was told that it would be just fine to go over there. He was certainly looking forward to it. His head was bumped affectionately, Tharin responding with his own small nudge in return. It seemed he just might have found a pack. Well, if they thought he was good enough for it. Tharin could only hope his skill with hunting would be enough, as that was all he had learned. He was still fairly young, and eager to learn, but hadn't had the chance to do so yet.

Considering the options Tharin shook his head. I wasn't really hungry. It was just better to do than staring at the land and hoping an answer would drop out of nowhere. He grinned over at Shandom, knowing that was exactly what had happened to him when Shandom approached him. If you want a bite to eat you're more than welcome to. If not, I'd really like to go right now. Perhaps he sounded a tad too desperate for a pack with that last part. Tharin was not adjusting to life on his own well at all, and the comforts of a pack that was similar to his own was craved. If he hadn't met Shandom he would have joined the first pack he'd come across, just to stop the loneliness no matter how crazy it was.

sorry bria! didn't even see that you responded. let's wrap this up and then move to the ND borders. WC: x

Shandom was happy the boy Tharin was interested in seeing New Dawn. A gentle smile was curled around his lips as his dark eye examined the younger creature, and the Gamma reassured himself that this would be a welcome and needed addition to the growing pack. It had taken off in a way he could never have expected, and the blossoming pride that overwhelmed his chest broadened the smile on his wolfish face. He knew he must look like a crazy person, but he didn't care: it was a good day, and it brought him joy when his moon-called family grew larger.

At the offer of food, Shandom shook his head, declining the polite consideration. I thank you for your offer, but I ate earlier today. It was true - the Qi'Vaex slayed a rabbit when dawn's first light made them disoriented and simple targets, and his belly was satiated. Let us travel, then, to New Dawn. It isn't too far from here if we move quickly. Please, follow me. With that, Shandom turned and picked up a brisk trot, his banner waving eagerly as he made his way back home.
