Time to Play

There was so much to learn for a pup as young as Zeus. Every day he heard words he didn’t understand or smelled smells he couldn’t name. And all of it he could ask about. Before his mother disappeared, he had never spent more than a few minutes outside the den. Now Rin took him with her when she left sometimes and never told him to stop asking question like his father had. She was so nice and today was one of the best examples of this. She had promised that they could go out to play! Never before had he gone outside just to play and the whole aspect of it had the little one excited.

He waited patiently while she readied herself and sniffed about the Alpha’s chambers. Again he picked up the stale scent of a ‘male’ (Rin had explained it was the right name for wolves who smelled like his Papa had) that he had never smelled or heard before. But he lost all regard for the strange smell when Rin finally called to him and they left the cave. He followed close by and felt carefully with his shuffling steps so he wouldn’t trip. It wasn’t long after the smell of grass and trees grew strong that he began to ask the antsy questions of an impatient puppy, Rin? Rin are we there yet? Can we play?

  • She had made a promise after all, and the woman was too involved with pleasing others to go back on her word. Especially to a young, energetic pup that wanted to roll in the fields. But it would not only be fun and games though the pup was well enough now to move a little easier. This would be the Issor's first attempt at enrichment of a young mind just as her Shepard had done for her in her youth. It was an exciting prospect she looked forward to exploring, but made not of how she would have to amend certain things within these playful lessons.

When a pup would be able to see what was around them, little Zeus's impairment called for X'yrin to get a little more creative. Sounds and smell would be the strengths to focus on. And perhaps when the little one had his first shift, touch would come into play. She gathered a few familiar objects from around the chamber, an antler comb, a scrap of elk hide, and a few hollow bones to create various sounds. All this she gathered in a fox fur pouch and carried it toward the mouth of the dens with little shuffling footfalls behind her.

Her tail was curled high and wagging excitedly, perhaps more so than the little one waddling into the tall grasses. She looked them out just far enough from the dens for them to still be within sight but deep enough into the grasses that no stones from the mountain could roll beneath their paws. It was here that she laid down her cargo and turned to look at her charge. "...and here we are," she giggled, already stamping her heavy paws on the ground and bending low to the pup's level just close enough for their noses to touch. "What shall we play, hm?"

He could hear whatever it was that Rin brought with rattle with her every step. It interested him but he had no reason to expect that whatever it was had to do with him. He was much more interested in the answer to his question. And when she said they had to go no further, the excitement in his little body bound forth. He jumped up on his hind legs and placed his paws on her side with a pleased yelp. When she turned to meet him he fell back and sat with tail wagging wildly. She bent down and he felt the light touch of her nose on his. It surprised Zeus but he didn’t jump back. Instead his little pink tongue lashed out at the larger wet nose.

Then she asked him a question. What to play? His tail continued wagging as he thought but he wasn’t sure what to say. The puppy had played with his brothers and sisters a few times before but they usually chose to leave him out of their games. A blind pup wasn’t as much fun to play with as one who could see. Momma and Papa had never tried to play with him either. How could he play with Rin when she was so big? He continued to sit and wonder but came up with nothing. Eventually his ears pinned back and he whimpered with his confusion. You want to play with me? He had known this was the case but had never questioned exactly how. Zeus wiggled with pent up energy in place but didn’t move much farther then that.

X'yrin smiled with the caresses of the soft pink tongue, her tail wagging erratically as her large paws danced in place. Of course she wanted to play! She would have thought the offer was apparent, but obviously this was not something believed by the little one. She stared as his antsy form, her muzzle titled slightly in thought as she watched him shuffle.

"Of course I want to play with you," she whined happily and nudged the pup into the grass to roll. "There was a game my pack brother X'ies and I used to play together all the time as pups. It is called 'tag' and you and I can play it too!"

But while one would ask how this physical game could be played by a blind pup, it could easily be adapted to accommodate him and further develop his remaining acute senses. "It is a chasing game where you have to catch the other and tap them then they become 'it'. How about we practice a little?" Shuffling back just a little ways, the she-wolf dropped to the ground and laid still, keeping little Zeus within sight but just out of reach of becoming an easy find. "Use your ears little one... use your nose to find me."

The nudge received wasn’t enough to push him over but he went with it. The little body tumbled and small limbs pawed up at the larger wolf. Then he stayed on his back and listened as Rin spoke. He understood the rules of her game but his mind wandered a little bit at the thought of Rin’s brother. Was “X’ies” as mean as Zeus’ brothers had been? No, he figured that he wasn’t if he played with her all the time.

When the pup finished deciding what he thought about X’ies, his caretaker had already said her last words and fallen into silence. Use my nose… he said them over and rolled onto his paws, intently listening for Rin’s usual sounds. She was quiet. The noise made by other animals was what constituted there existence in Zeus’ mind. His friend falling so silent was similar to someone suddenly vanishing from sight. It left him confused and only a little sure of the direction she had been in. Zeus’s tail began to sway again and he barked for her to see if she would make it easy. When there was still silence he repeated himself once more before putting his nose to the ground and beginning to weave back and forth in the grass looking for her scent.

It was still plenty fresh. He zigzagged slowly across the small distance between them for a minute or two then stopped to listen. Hearing nothing but the sounds of bugs and birds singing, he put his nose to the ground once more and continued on. The next time he stopped he was only a foot or two away from Rin’s hiding place. He could hear her slow breathing and a small grin spread across his lips. Found you! The young one hollered and pounced at the sound, which also happened to be her face. The as soon as he felt her fur and the second his paws hit the ground again, he tried to sprint away. Moving his untrained legs a little too fast at the start, he fell on his face. Luckily, falling was something Zeus had adjusted to. It didn’t delay him for but a second before he shot off into the grass. In a handful of seconds he cleared about fifteen feet of space. Then he fell again but on his own accord this time. So much excitement filled him that he completely forgot about Rin’s ability to see. His “hiding place” was in plain view of anyone within sixty feet. Use your nose to find me… He whispered in the same tone she had. Then he carefully curled into a ball and tried not to breathe too much or whine about his wound as it stung at him for the movement.

It took a little time and some determination on the little one’s part, but X’yrin had faith that he would accomplish this little test of the senses. Nomad pups were not often trained like this. As it was regrettable to admit, perhaps what the mother had done to this pup, the Nomad parents would often do to their defective children if their impairment kept them from working within their family. More often than not they were cared for at the beginning, then tested in ways that would suit theirs or other family. Success was praised highly, but a weak will was met with abandonment. It was a policy that had not changed in many generations, and in her time with them she had come to accept it. But here now…with essentially a little pup of her own, she was intent on doing everything within her power to grant him the life that was nearly robbed from him.

She lay there quietly among the grass, keeping her breath calm and even as she watched the little one on his ‘search’. Admittedly, he was a resilient little one and careful in his observations. His ears would dance to the sounds of nature, then hone in on the sounds of her breath. He would come closer then, sniffing to make sure the scent was hers, then sprang and caught the she-wolf by the muzzle. “Oh no!!” she wailed. “I’ve been found!” But the capture was short-lived as the pup ran off to hide himself…in plain sight.

Giggling the would-be predator lowered herself to the ground and began sniffing doing as instructed and only using her nose to find him. She hummed thoughtfully, inching along the ground whilst following the scent of her charge. “Oh where could little Zeus be…?”

The little ball of gold and black speckled fur was easy enough to find, but she would not spring just yet. Instead she circled around, sniffing everything but him as if ‘missing’ him location, all the while humming thoughtfully. “Oh…where could he be?” Her nose brushed along his back and the feigned a gasp of shock as he was ‘found’. “Look what I found!” she sang merrily. “A little pup all my own!” She proceeded then to bury her nose in his tiny belly, lapping wherever her tongue could reach.

It was a little bit uncomfortable to curl up his injured body but once he was in the shape he was comfortable enough. With the large wound he had been given and constantly falling on his face, the little male was beginning to build up a tolerance to dull pains. He was good enough at this that he could concentrate on Rin as she grew closer. She circled around him whilst humming to herself. The puppy couldn’t help but quiver with a giddy giggle of pride and nervousness. He had done a pretty good job of hiding if it took the bigger wolf so long to find him.

But it he couldn’t hide forever even if though he tried. He held his breath when he heard her gasp but knew he was found. The onslaught of her large tongue had Zeus laughing and squealing for her to stop but he truly loved the attention she gave. He pawed and nipped at her muzzle gently but eventually decided to squirm out from under her. It all felt familiar. He could remember his momma licking him so lovingly. Rin was a lot like momma but even nicer. But she still wasn’t his mother. He still missed her.You have good nose, he complemented, Like momma. Rin, when is momma going to come? He asked with a cock of his head.

The she-wolf cherished her little prize, going to great lengths to keep him still amidst the loving onslaught. But he was a crafty, wriggly little pup and managed to wiggle out from her grasp. How X'yrin adored the little one. He reminded her dearly of the time she spent with Salvador. Though the pup was not her own, she cared for him as though she had given birth to him herself. She loved and cherished him too and was deeply wounded when he was lost within the Wentworth Valley. If ever she harbored a regret, it was that she had lost sight of the babe she dearly loved. And still... she believed that it was her never producing children of her own, always adopting and acting as mother to offspring not her own, that caused her mate to leave her.

It was times like this, tending to the pup and lavishing him with her unyielding affections that made her recall the life she had with Saluce. The promises they made to each other for a happy and fulfilling life. A life where their loved would take the form of many pups that they together would raise and mold into far grander images than themselves of strength and fill their minds with the collected wisdom of this many seasons on the land. Between the two, there had been such promise, and the female would lie awake at night beside him wondering what their pups would look like.

She never smiled so brightly now as she had then when painting the mental images of their children, when envisioning the family playing and learning together. Creating a home together... a family that would grow to something more.

And with his absence, she felt that dream... that future was gone. That the sliver of a chance for that life would remain only with the young pup that stared at her blindly. In him she could find joy. In him she could impress her will to mold him into something more despite his impairment. But regardless of her wishes, she was reminded the pup was not her own. Despite how much her heart wished for this truth not to be so. "I am sorry little one..." X'yrin sighed softly while drawing her paws beneath her as she laid down in the grass. "I do not know. It has been some time since she asked you to wait..."

Rin had become a mother to Zeus. It was how he looked at her, even if he didn’t call her momma yet. With that dependent mind set, he was inclined to believe absolutely everything she told him. In his time he had learned what wolves smelled like and how it was different from birds. He knew that water was needed if he wanted to feel good all day. But any scrap of information set in the little brain would instantly be over written if Rin told him otherwise. It is why he asked about his momma. Rin would know. She would tell him why. But when she told him she didn’t know it was confusing. Rin knew everything. It was almost a bit scary to hear that she didn’t know.

He heard the heavy sound of her body falling into the grass and recognized it. She was lying down and that meant she would be low enough to lay against. The puppy thought about the answer to his question as he quietly meandered over to her and pressed up against her fluffy chest. He nuzzled the fragrant fur affectionately. What if momma never come back? Did I make her mad Rin? Like papa? I really sorry for what I did, He whined sadly. His parents had never been gone so long. He was beginning to realize that it must be for some strange reason. Momma and Papa were way too big to be hurt by birds like he had been. The only other reason in his mind was punishment but for what he didn’t know. He apologized to his caretaker like telling her might do some good even though he had no idea what he’d done wrong.

A pup's mind was always filled with questions. This she knew from her own experiences that were seemingly drifting further into the past as the days went by. And she was reacquainted with the curiosities of a pup when she had the pleasure of bonding with the Wolfe brood while in Ichika. She hadn't anticipated then so many questions from the little Dalgina, but she found it pleasurable to indulge the child as well as herself. It prepared her of only slightly for what would come with youth. But it was only the first experience... the first set of questions posed from a vast curiosity. She had yet to experience the narrow questions about so specific a thing. She did not know where to begin.

When comforting words were not readily at her disposal, she whined softly to her charge and gently licked his nose. As he fell into her chest, she curved her head around slightly to draw him closer in then let her muzzle again rest on the ground. She breathed deeply.

"Zeus," she began quietly. "You have nothing to apologize for. And I do not believe you made her 'mad'. What she has done is set you on a journey that is meant for you alone. She must have felt her role as your mother had come to an end and left so that you would be guided by your ancestors." She nudged the little one gently. "My mother had done the same to me. After my first season, she left to rejoin her own family within our pack and I remained with my father and the rest of our strongest and able. Because of her decision, I became a part of a new family, guided by my papa...my Shepard, and came to respect and care for them as I would have anyone that shared my blood. Though there was no one else like my mother...no one else that carried her scent, I came to accept and admire those that cared for me. They became my family. And I believe, Zeus, that your mother has set you on a path just the same."

As a pup who had only just learned to speak coherently himself, Zeus often found himself confused by the long words Rin used. He was learning quickly and understood much more than when he had been found. This was thanks to the amazing linguistic learning capabilities of the young. This time he understood most of what she said. With that understanding also came many questions. It seemed after every other word she said, Zeus could think of something to ask about. But he didn’t. The blind pup’s unique ability to listen won out over his curiosity and confusion.

But what he got from the older wolf wasn’t what he wanted. Zeus loved his momma. He didn’t want her to leave. But he couldn’t deny this, the word of Rin. She was always right. Despair shook his little paws and buried his muzzle into the warm fur that surrounded him with a sad whimper, Momma not going to come back. It was something Papa would have scolded him for. He had never liked it when Zeus cried. But… Papa wasn’t here anymore. He wouldn’t be because he was with Momma. And, as Rin continued, he drew a connection. She had been left too and found a new home, a new Papa. Did Zeus have to find a new Papa too? Or a new Momma? It would be hard. His parents had been upset that he couldn’t see. He remembered enough of them to know that. Would new parents be upset that he couldn’t see too?

He whimpered a time or two more then grew silent under the warmth of Rin. Slowly he pulled his head back and licked her fur a few times. …If Momma want me to get a new family… like your Momma… will you be my family? I proms to be good n’ try hard to see fur you Rin. I proms, He spoke as clearly as he could then buried his head back in her fur and waited. He shivered once with a little fear. What would he do if Rin said no?

ooc: And X'y is crying her eyes out on the inside.

Would he be able to understand what she wanted to convey? Would he be able to hear her words and not be afraid of them? Her own questions came forth and swam through her mind. Some painful, others sorrowful...and a handful were roused by fear. A fear that she would have to tell him that his parents were not coming for him for wholly different reasons. She did not want to bring sadness to his eyes. Rather she wanted him to look hopeful for what was to come.

X'yrin remained silent as the little one processed her words. The soft songs of the afternoon birds flowed through the air on cheerily winds. Though the mood was anything but, a little smile creased the corners of her mouth. A little curl in controlled glee for having a pup within her loving grasp again. Even if the circumstances were not in favor of the young one. When she heard his soft spoken words, her ears fell back and she turned her gaze to him. She offered what warmth she could to console him, having no words of comfort to offer. But would it be enough? Would he take this new path and grow from it?

She felt him move and lifted her muzzle to peer into his void eyes. Though he could not see, she could still see something within them. The same life, the same light that was sound in orbs that could see as clear as day. There was expression, there was fear. But there was also hope. No... his mother was not coming back. But a new family, yes. This the pup could have. "Of course, my young one," she replied without hesitation. "I can be your knew family. All of Sangi'lak...or this pack, can be your new family. If you are willing to let them in." Carefully she lowered her muzzle to touch the tip of her nose to his. "And you don't have to 'see' for me as I would see. You can use your ears, your nose, and see the world differently than me. You can overcome what others would fail to do. You will 'see' through different eyes."

And the puppy is happy again! Smile PGP+2 Words-200+

Often the ignorance of a puppy was a hindrance. Usually it hindered safety or distracted from learning. But in that moment under Rin, when only she believed he could do something with a life of darkness, his ignorance protected him. His parents had deserted him due to his disability. But because of his inability to understand the cruelty of the world, Zeus was easily convinced that his mother had meant for him to be found and that her act was one of love. That this new family was meant to find him. And with that understanding came a sort of acceptance. Down in his heart he still wished his Momma would return and missed her dearly. But he also understood his situation and it would have looked brighter than the true reality he faced, if he could have seen it.

Zeus was as satisfied with her acceptance as he could have been. Rin would be his family now and that made him so happy. His lost energy found him again and he barked excitedly before furiously lapping at Rin’s nose over and over. And we can play more? He rested both paws on top of her muzzle and questioned happily.

    ooc:

The worries of the pup were fading, but in X’yrin there was still concerned for what the future hold. The chances of this conversation coming up again was inevitable…especially when Zeus became older and his mind was better equipped for understanding. But for now…he looked happy again with the opportunity for a new family and as if the energy in him never depleted, it returned with full force assaulting her large face with excitable licks. A sense of normality had returned.

“Yes, we can play more, my little one,” she growled softly and buried her nose into his soft stomach. “Afterall, pups need to play and have fun while they are small and fast or they will turn into grouchy adults.” She breathed through flared nostril’s into the boy’s stomach, parting through the fur to tickly the flesh beneath. “And Zeus doesn’t want to be a grouchy old adult does he?” With a little bump to his belly, she pushed the pup down into the grass and proceeded with a little attack of her own. Fairly light nips and wagging tongue. Stealing a nibble on an ear here and there then plunging her face back into his warm belly. “No…Zeus is going to be a happy adult!”

    PGP+2 Words-200+

With the promise of play Zeus was rather sure his new family would be wonderful. Rin would be there. She was so nice and answered his questions anytime he asked them. The prospect of having other family members that he didn’t know was hard to understand. Family was a group of people that spent a lot of time together: that was his understanding of family. If this whole “pack” was to be his family then he couldn’t spend time with all of them. Would they be as nice as X’yrin? He could only hope.

The assault of a large muzzle and mention of adulthood easily distracted him from though. No! He swatted at her nose lightly to extenuate his desire to be forever young. Grouchy or not, Zeus was way too small to ever be an adult! And he would never get very much bigger with how slow he grew. He felt the gentle bump and fell with it not resisting all that much and continuously batting at her muzzle while squealing happily with laughter and barks of joy. When she came back to tickle his belly some more he wrapped his paws around her nose and began biting at it playfully with his little milk teeth. When it grew apparent that that he had no power to stop her attack, he wiggled out from under her as he had done before. No! He exclaimed again, Zeus will never be an adult! He then proceeded to bound away from her and would continue running until she caught him or he tripped. Whichever came first.
