[html]8.10.12 ; base of mount oromocto near SK border, gray skies after a morning rain ; lupus form
As a light storm had swooped in the previous night Gal had hurried to find herself some suitable shelter, fearful of the light thunder and potential lightning perhaps mores so than one reasonable ought to be. She had taken cover in a cleft in some rocks at the base of some mountain - not that she had taken the time to notice during the shower - and now finally was blinking awake under a hazy sky where fog still seemed to somewhat cling in the area, though she assumed the sun would clear it away eventually.

Crawling from the relatively small crevice she had holed up in all night, Gal was met with aches and pains in various places, objecting to the odd way she had been sleeping. For this reason she bowed into a stretch, her front legs extending in front of her as far as they could reach and jaws parting in a morning yawn. As she withdrew back to a normal standing stance the lupus shook her head, then twisting oddly to lick some of the rainwater off that had dampened the fur along her back. Her stomach growled with a pang of hunger, and with that she glanced around for a suitable source of water in which she could fish.

But to no avail. The only water nearby seemed to be that which had settled in small puddles, and there were certainly no fish there. The corners of her mouth tugged into a slight frown. Did this mean she would have to hunt something on land? For a moment, a rather put out look would cross her face, soon to be replaced with one of uncertain determination. She couldn't shake that hint of doubt over her hunting capabilities, and rightfully so! Hesitantly she began to ascend the not so steep base of the mountain, thankful that there were enough trees and whatnot to conceal her less than graceful movements.

With a hopeful mindset, albeit the slight assumption of failure, the wolf crept onward up the mountain, keeping her body low to the ground without crouching, nose and ears on high alert for whatever prey might come her way. And she continued like this for longer than her patience could last with an activity she didn't particularly enjoy. Giving a low growl of frustration Galleta plopped herself down, falling all the way to the ground among the shrubbery. But just as she did, as luck would have it, the scent of a vole drifted her way, rousing the lass back to her feet with the need to eat. With careful steps and decent stealth, Gal crept towards the creature, however becoming a bit to hasty once it came into sight, leaping for it without properly thinking ahead, and just missing! With this letdown she emitted another hushed growl at herself, how could she be so stupid?

  • Setting: August 10th after the rains
  • Location: Mt. Oromocto
  • Form: Secui

  • Normality was relative to more than one perception, and as it stood a normal state had far from returned to Sangi’lak as far as its Issor could tell. What was to be expected after Jaden and X’ies’s return was completely up to anyone that knew of the triad’s situation. Perhaps either of them thought they would return with open arms ready to receive them. Perhaps a meal freshly caught; a banquet in honor of their safe return. Their expectations would be dashed though to find that the she-wolf was less than accommodating to them. Nearly a month gone without word or contact from them. The state of their leaving still engraved in her mind, and it was this state that greeted them at the borders. A cold indifference, a tightly clasped maw and an erected tail flying the banner of Alpha. They were back home now, but things were far from normal.

Though, on the positive against the negative, normality continued in the form of routine. A hunt after the rains passed to replenish the dwindling stock. A party of one would have to suffice and take down game large enough to feed the one sleeping child left in Asgeir’s care. A marten, if she could track one. The moist ground made it difficult to hone in on a scent, but her senses were as sharp as ever and determination was at its peak.

Veering from the neighboring coast, her path led along the shadow of the great mountain, charging through dense shrub and stubborn flora with nose hovering just above the wet ground. There was something around, though she couldn’t quite place it just yet. It was not a marten as she had hoped, but it smelled of the earth just the same. She shook her head to rid herself of the extra weight of water clinging to her lengthy mane, but the act only served to loosen her poorly drawn back bangs and bring them in front of her eyes again. And it could not have been at a worse time. A stout ear flicked to the sound of movement, the rustled of hastened steps as prey darted away from…something. A quick sniff alerted the autumn female that she was not alone in this hunt and could have very well been disturbing another’s hunting grounds. But this close to the Family border? Her brows furrowed in concern as curiosity led her around to where the little vole had come from. And at the origin of its trail was a female wolf apparently displeased.

The Issor said nothing for the moment, simply raised her head and stared down at the troubled female scrutinizing her form with calm, amber eyes. Her hackles were raised in wary though hidden beneath the impressive mass of auburn locks. And as her norm when she spoke, her voice was soft just barely audible but none the less clear. “Are you alright?”

[html]On a bed of undergrowth Galleta sat, continuing to look rather upset, and with no one else around for the moment besides the prey she'd just frightened off, it could be accurately assumed she was either angry at her victim or herself. But of course, she was loathing herself for her ineptitude at what should have been a very basic skill, and missing something she ought to have caught. She had all the components, and yet whenever she tried to compose them all in the effort of a hung she seemed always to fall short, or use some of what seemed to be an excess of luck to get her land meals. Shouldn't it be as easy as fishing? Her self loathing only deepened at the thought of those silvery bodies that had become almost easy to catch, her expression falling from tense anger to something a little more hopeless.

At the slight sound of footfall Gal's ears swiveled, seeking the source, and her head was soon to follow, nose working to figure out what it was, hoping idly that it was some prey of an attainable size for one so small as she. But instead her almost depressed stare fell on a fellow canine with a rather impressive auburn mane, and she carried the scent of the area, which Gal could only assume meant that she had accidentally crossed some border or was just about to, her ears folded slightly backwards at the realization, and also to show her lack of threat, though uncertainty had her clamoring back to her feet so she might be able to more easily escape if the encounter turned violent. Gal had been presented with good reason to doubt strangers in the past, and while the memories were still fresh the lessons wouldn't be forgotten.

"Oh," she started, clearly having set the situation up to be something bad, her features relaxed slightly into something a little more friendly and a little less terrified, "Yes, I suppose so, just..," dare she share her shortcomings with a perfect stranger? "I'm not good at hunting today, I guess," she stated rather simply with a small sigh, her foreign accent making certain words near indecipherable, if her trouble with grammar wasn't enough. All of her being seemed to droop as she admitted this, over exaggerating the downtrodden feeling that accompanied her situation, just as she was accustomed to doing.

The female had fallen into silence for the most part, keening observing the unknown female's behavior before proceeded with a step forward. Her childhood name as 'curious' proved itself well warranted again as she was compelled forward to further her investigation. Invasive though it was, instinctually she felt her right was reserved with an unknown so close to her Family's boundary line. To protect them was her ruling priority, even from one that appeared for the most part harmless. But she woman was not unkind and displayed this by humbly lowering her head and pausing to maintain a comfortable distance. Her senses could handle what remained of this inquisition.

When the female rose, she too took several steps back to maintain a distance but did not let her uniquely hued coat out of her sight. Seeing her posture relax, the Issor was more inclined to release the tension from her muscles in a similar fashion and let her tail sway in comfortable repose. Mentioning the hunt turned her attention back toward the way she came not in an effort to spy the elusive creature but to follow its path of escape. Not good at hunting? She turned back to the female with a puzzling expression pulling at her muzzle. Perhaps she was ill, so much so that her senses were not all prepared for the hunt? An unfortunate ailment to say the least, but she was doubtful that sickness was the cause based upon her own experiences.

"Would you like help?" the offer was made quietly with her ears still adjusting to the she-wolf's unfamiliar accent. "I was in the middle of a hunt myself," she continued. "Just along the outskirts of my pack until I came across your scent...and your prey. Perhaps you would like to find another, my friend?"

[html]When the other moved forward Gal failed to notice any possible overstepping of personal boundaries, as she happened to have little regard for them for the most part. However, in a whole new setting full of creatures she'd never met before, and full of packs she'd only heard rumors of existing, she felt a little more inclined to generally keep her distance. But more importantly than maintaining proper distance, perhaps, was proper body posture! And as the other seemed more highly ranked than herself, Gal felt it was necessary to hold her ears at a respectable angle, though her tail dared sway slightly where it hung as the Issor's began to, and then with that selfless offer Galleta's entire being had flipped from looking like some forlorn puppy to being ecstatic and hyper-appreciative!

"You'd do that?" she inquired, her voice little more than an excited yip with it's constant dose of melody. Her sudden enthusiasm seemed to all but completely destroy any idea that sickness could be the cause of her lack of success with hunting, "That would be...excelente!" She exclaimed, though quickly hushed her voice, looking a bit sheepish over the noise she was making, knowing it wouldn't be a good idea if a hunt was to ensue. In addition, she seemed suddenly concerned with the notion of pack borders, "There is a lot of scent like your here," she whispered, "I hope I'm not over the borders?" Though at least if she was she was fortunate enough not to have actually caught the food that belonged to anyone who'd claimed this land, and additionally, lucky that she had happened into one who seemed rather forgiving of how close Gal dared get to the territory of her family.

Waiting only for answers to these questions, Gal would begin testing the air, her head falling close to the ground as the moisture in the air did its best to drown out any scent trails there. Perhaps this was her first problem with the hunting she'd tried earlier: improper tracking. "I'm okay with the sneaking, the running, and the pouncing," the chatty lass continued in her hushed voice, "It's just the tracking and the timing is not easy." With that she lifted her head from the ground, satisfied with finding that the only thing that had along that spot recently was the vole she'd scared off, perhaps that meant her raised voice earlier hadn't actually caused any harm.

Assumptions indicating illness were quickly discarded by the exuberant display. In alarm the she-wolf reared back on her hindlegs and took a few awkward steps back before dropping back down into a small puddle of muck. The excited female had seemed so meek before as far as the Nomad could acutely read. But this reaction was clearly unexpected. Such elation for a gesture that came second nature...at least to most.

"Well...yes I would," finding her voice again, the autumn woman replied and reclaimed her prior forward steps. "It would be my pleasure to help." X'yrin smiled kindly while humbly tipping her head in affirmation. "Though it is in your best interest to know that you are very close to our borders," she raised her head to its accustomed height bearing down at the female not in threat but to caution her. "...but you have not crossed them. My Family calls the mountain and the surrounding lands home, but we do not claim it all. You needn't worry about trespassing. Else this would be a wholly different conversation."

Having verbally enforced what was claimed by the pack, she visibly relaxed and watched with a gentle smile as her curious acquaintance sniffed the ground for a scent. True as it was for tracking and timing to be essential for a successful hunt, there were other aspects that needed to be noted. "If it were easy, then there would be no thrill for the hunt and all the predators would grow fat and lazy," she teased. "But the ancestors give us ways to lessen the strain of the hunt." Raising her muzzle, she gestured to the sky.

"The wind can either help us or hinder is. It can carry out scent to our prey and be our undoing, or it can take it away when set at the right angle." She then lowered her muzzle and motioned with her tail the direction the creature had run off to. "The habit of the creature...its direction. Prey are predictable and will usually seek a place to hide if they sense they are being hunted. It is just a matter of finding the place they feel safe."

And with her head turned, she followed through the motion and began walking back around the base of the mountain, lowering her muzzle to the ground in search of a scent. "The wind is in our favor," she announced feeling a slight resistance from the winds as a cool gust swept through. "Now we use our 'sneaking'-" she smiled "- and what is known about small prey...and no doubt we will find it."

[html]Backwards steps were hardly noticed by Galleta in her ecstatic stupor, assuming only that she might have almost hit the other in some flail she hadn't meant to commit, any thoughts that she had given anything less than an entirely expected display were pushed farther out of her mind when the other female retraced her steps and regained the comfortable distance apart that two had been prior to Gal's outburst. When her rhetoric was answered with affirmation an easy smile spread on the canine's lips, or at least the animal equivalent, as she beamed at the other, finding perhaps more joy in her actions than the situation even required. "You're very nice," she stated, nodding, as the pack wolf noted that it would be her pleasure, and now Galleta could contentedly listen to whatever the female had to say, and it was only more good news in the foreigner's mind!

The delight on her face did not falter as it was pointed out that she had not quite crossed the borders into a pack, for if she had, Gal would have to seriously reconsider the capabilities of her nose! Packs did not tend to leave borders unmarked, and she could only assume that crossing one would be hard to miss. "Good, I didn't mean to get so close to your pack," by now her mind was on packs, something she was awfully curious about but always a bit to wary of to give a chance, "What's your pack like, anyways?" she asked, before she had lowered her head to find the trail of the vole, "Nevermind, you can tell me once we've gotten some prey," she decided, falling silent just in time for the larger female's joke, to which Gal allowed a moment of amused giggling, returning her attention to what she assumed was to be her momentary mentor. Oh, how she felt like a pup! It was surprising she wasn't simply dying of embarrassment as she asked for help hunting, of all things!

With puppy-esque eyes full of wonder and eagerness to learn Galleta gawked at the fellow wolf, clearly hanging on every word that was spoken, and quickly falling in behind the other as she moved around the base of the mountain. Stealth was a natural forte for the Mexican wolf, her rather petite sized lent itself enough to quiet steps as anything else she might do, and so it was no hard task for her silently trail along. When the Issor stopped to sniff the ground, so did Gal. When she commented on the wind change and looked into the oncoming breeze, Gal did so as well, and thankfully it brought with it the scent of prey! The excitement was clearly just spilling over the edges of the tiny lass, perhaps her over-enthusiasm was one of her downfalls, it could certainly contribute to her premature attacks. "Right," she whispered, to acknowledge the command, and so she waited for the other's lead, it definitely played to Gal's strength to have someone's command to follow.

ooc: :O And they will find...a...?

A favorable wind and a scent to track; there were not better conditions than this for a hunt. Unless of course the prey was wounded, in which case the circumstances were a true gift from the ancestors. But there was still a challenge to overcome. Finding the animal was a task in and of itself. One could only go so far by ground scent alone. Soon and more engaged survey would be required… a little run to wake the senses and perhaps stir the fodder that were hidden.

The ground was moist enough to soften their steps, but with the rain came gaps in the terrain, small puddles to encompass too heavy a paw hindering swift movement to a quiet, rhythmic march. A light challenge to overcome and one what would be with well placed bounds. Coming closer to the mountain, her pace quickened to as the ground became less of a hazard and more accommodating to their purpose. The scent of their prey became stronger the further along they tread passing along the dense façade toward a series of recesses as its base. And it was here that the Issor came to a halt, lifting her head in command and whisking her tail in signal to pause. “An obstacle…” she addressed the small recess.

It was quite wide, spanning nearly double her length but its entrance was a little less than half her height. A tight squeeze but not an impossible entry to advance through. So long as it was not her that dove into the hideaway. She looked over her shoulder expectantly adorned with a smile upon her weathered lips. “I believe this is your hunt,” her voice was hardly a whisper to any but the lupine ear. Undoubtedly her voice would carry. “If it runs out, I will be sure to catch it. But…smell it out before you proceed. Your strike must be precise or else you will lose it.”

[html]a wild mink has appeared! O:
A myriad of hushed footsteps, sound drowned out by mud that helped just as much as it threatened to hinder. It stuck to her paws, but Gal didn't mind. She'd never been much for routine hygiene, and really only bathed because she so enjoyed the water. And walking along now in the midst of her lesson, mentally repeating the main points of everything that she had been told - the wind, the sneaking, not being lazy - became a bit monotonous and would constantly give way to day dreams of rivers and fish. And in turn, the thought of food would force her scattered mind back to the present, occasionally with the slight shake of her head and brief moment of looking slightly startled. But she followed along, nevertheless.

It was not until the other spoke that she was shaken from her devoted recitation of the tidbits she'd already been told and her water fantasies to focus more wholly on the scent that they had been following. The petite wolf wandered right up to the edge of the recess, recognizing that it would not be impossible for her to fit in, and as it smelled strongly of the mink that they'd been following she assumed it would also make for an easier cat if it had a rather limited escape route blocked off by its predator! Perhaps she would even complete this hunt on her own! "I don't think it should be too hard for me to fit," Gal pointed out, only reiterating the obvious more so for her own benefit than the Issor's.

Upon being given the go ahead to enter without the immediate aid of the other Gal approached the recess, taking utmost caution as she went over a last round of the useful information she had been gathering since the beginning of this meeting, and with that her whole mind honed in on her task. The opening was plenty wide for Gal, and the height of it was not too much shorter than she so that she still maintained adequate maneuverability once inside, it felt an awful lot like entering a mother's den. She also noticed how much harder it was to keep entirely silent with fur brushing the ceiling and her feet on harder ground, but it would not dampen her spirit!

In the light that still trickled from the entrance the foreigner could just make out the outline of her victim, who seemed to be sleeping - or at least not moving much at all. With a planned motion she swept forward as quickly as possible, her aim possibly a little off in the dimmed lighting, and her jaws snapped on one of the thing's back legs, and she held on, dragging it back towards her to try and reposition her grip, however she was not quite quick enough as she released the leg it raced away - at a considerably slower pace - towards the exit where the Issor waited, and Gal was hot on the mink's heals!

ooc: XD Just had the greatest Poke' moment ever!

For the most part, her acting role as mentor on this hunt was complete. All that remained was the kill and the feast which of course would go to the molten she-wolf. X’yrin’s own hunt would have to be delayed for just a little while longer, she noted indifferently. Luckily there were several dried meat caches around the territory to choose from. Though she could not ignore the desire for the warm, sweet taste of fresh meat. But her deprived appetite would have to continue to go without for now.

Patiently she waited for her companion to shimmy her way into the small den and find the prize, all the while surveying the area around them. Another risk of the hunt was always competition with other predators, or worse; becoming prey herself to something with formidable claws and a terrible attitude. From an early age she had learned to never let her guard down during the hunt, and the scar on her shoulder was an unkind reminder of the dangers that could spring when the mind strayed elsewhere. So with one ear on the den and another vigilantly surveying the hunting ground, she waited patiently for the outcome.

A terrified screech honed both ears on the den and the commotion inside got her heart racing. Success! She had called, but prematurely as their prey suddenly shot out of the den albeit slowly with injury. A sudden dart on its scampering position and the frightened creature was captured beneath two heavy paws, held still by the sheer force pressing down on its back and leg. It began to gasp for air amidst its shrieking but did not live long to suffer a slow end. A swift descent of her teeth around its head and it was quiet with a snap of her jaws. Quick, effortless, and rewarding, this hunt. And as reward, the she-wolf stepped away from the prize and allowed the petite hunter to claim it.

    "Success."

[html]sorry for the slow post, my boyfriend just got home yesterday <:
As Galleta ducked into the recess her mind was less on a meal and more so on the hope of a successful attempt at hunting, truly, all of the pointers she'd gotten had helped, and just having someone else that she assumed believed she could do it worked wonders on the petite wolf. However, as she attacked, and barely missed, she found her spirit slightly dampened, and so she exited the den awaiting harsh criticism. The hunt was all but completely out of her mind as disappointment with herself flooded it, not a particularly good survival tactic, but with the emotional swings that she was prone to it wasn't entirely expected that she would have exceptional survival instincts.

However, even as she crept out of the shadows with eyes towards the ground and posture once again submissive and sorry, she was met with a single, triumphant word. And that once more changed the entire demeanor of the foreigner! "You got it!" she would exclaim, once more stating the obvious and practically bouncing over to sniff at the dead thing with unbridled excitement, "¡Muchas gracias!" she exclaimed, moving her head away from the dead mink and letting her soft pink tongue flick over her lips as the sharp pang of hunger in her stomach returned. "We should share, and you can tell me about your pack now," Gal suggested, beaming as she continued to stand, respect for the wolf who clearly outranked her, and who had so kindly allowed her to hunt so close to her pack's territory, kept the overjoyed doll from just digging into the animal. Now, she would respect what she assumed ought to be the pecking order, unless it was stated otherwise.

Regardless, she dropped elegantly to the ground alongside the slain creature, with happy eyes looking up to the considerably larger canine. "But I guess you need to hunt more," she noted, eyeing the mink carcass once more.

    ooc: :3 no worries

Instinctually there was an order to follow with the aftermath of the hunt, an order that had not been trained out of the Nomads despite their unusual practices. Though she knew who was to take the first bite and which pieces were hers to claim, she pushed back the order for the time being and stepped away from the carcass, allowing the excited female to have her fill. But of course, with a slight condition.

"It is yours," she said, politely declining the offer to share. "But please keep the fur intact if you can. Splitting it along the belly should work." An avid collector of furs and pelts, she had an idea on how to preserve the hides even while eating. Afterall, the hides were needed to continue her hobby which was coming along surprisingly well. But even though she did not feel the need to share a meal, she was more than willing to share some information regarding her Family.

Stepping further back from the mink, she found a partially dry spot to sit nearly catching her lengthy mane beneath her rump in the process. Clearing her throat, she began softly. "My Family is called Sangi'lak and we call this mountain and some of the surrounding lands our home. I am X'yrin, one of its leaders and founder. We are a pack that caters to those wishing to find a comfortable end to their Endless Path and those wanting a family of their own. As a whole we hold to the culture and traditions of my prior family, the Nomads, but have learned to adopt some of the...differences found on these lands without straying from what makes us a unique Family. But please tell me..." X'yrin extended her paw, gesturing for the young female to speak when able. "Where do you hail from? Are you a part of a pack?"
