What Are These Feelings?

For the past couple days he'd been having trouble concentrating. It was a rather disconcerting feeling to have. After all, there was really nothing wrong with him. Lots of food, pups coming to the pack, and females entering into heat. There was even a new mateship. His close call with Adonia, while fierce in it's nature and wrong, was over. Tharin was not one to dwell on the past. He'd apologized to the alpha, submitting and doing all he could to make his wrongs right.

The expression on Kiara's face when she'd picked up Adonia's heated scent on his frame had made things much more complicated. An odd feeling of guilt had run through him. Tharin had only been acting on his instincts. His relationship with Adonia was close, after all. It was possible that they could have been mates. Minus that whole being claimed by the alpha. The scent had been rather faint though, so he could be forgiven for making that mistake. Sighing he stretched out at the dens, watching Saki chew on a stick. Why wouldn't it go away?

Why? It was a question that Kiara found herself asking far to often, and one that never had any answers. Why did Tharin try to mate with Adonia? Perhaps the answer to that one was obvious: because Adonia had been in heat. If a male didn't try to mount a female in heat, there was probably something wrong with him. Mating was the most basic urge, and Tharin could not be faulted for his actions. Yet, Kiara couldn't help but feel betrayed. Why?

Kiara had been avoiding Tharin ever since she had smelled Adonia's scent on his coat. She couldn't look Tharin in the eye without feeling her chest contract painfully. Too keep away from him, the snowy female traveled to places that Tharin couldn't go, not with Saki at his heels. With the salmon run starting, Kiara had managed to kill plenty of time by finding streams that breached the ocean. The very first of the salmon had started their annual trek upriver, and it made of a clean distraction from Tharin and the rest of the bad things in her life.

Soaking wet and with a rather large fish dangling from her mouth, Kiara returned to the pack lands happy and pleasantly unaware of her problems. She had intended on bringing the fish back to Lucia as a present, and perhaps even take her daughter out fishing once the fish became more numerous. Prancing, the lithe female returned to the den, her catch flopping in her jaws as she bounced slightly.

Unfortunately, Kiara's good mood flew away like a flock of frightened crows. She froze, seeing Tharin's familiar form stretched out along the ground. His amber eyes watched Saki halfheartedly as she chewed on a stick. Shuffling nervously, Kiara moved a few more steps until she was almost beside Tharin. Sapphire eyes drifted towards him, anxiety clear in her blue orbs.

Her scent caught his attention first. It was hard to not recognize or acknowledge it. The odd feeling tickled through him again, his ear twitching slightly at her approach. She was probably still avoiding him, a difficult state of affairs. They were still close throughout their activities, both trying to pretend they weren't feeling what they were. He hadn't left his station outside her den during the night, though he was careful to stay out of her way.

Kiara kept moving closer. Did she want to speak to Saki? His heart picked up, doing his best to pretend that he wasn't so aware of her presence. He waited for her to do something, perhaps walk past, or start talking to Saki. Instead she stood there beside him, a giant fish grasped in her mouth. Tharin turned his head, actually looking at her. Their eyes didn't quite meet before he stood up, stepping over to grab onto the fish.

Anxiety welled up like a lump in her chest, hard and determined to stay. The feeling was curious and its origins were unknown, but Kiara couldn't help but feel that way. Her entire body was stiff as she moved, until her muscles were so ridged that she felt like it would be impossible to take even one step further. Finally, Kiara stopped, much to her own bewilderment and surprise. Every part of her brain screamed at her to keep going, to find Lucia and stop being so overly sensitive. Yet, something made her stay, something made her freeze. One snowy ear was stretched towards Tharin as she eyed him cautiously, the same way she would eye a cougar or bear.

Without a word, the giant silver male stood, his hulking form looming over her like a great shadow. Kiara lowered her ears and looked away, trying to be as respectful and submissive as she always was. For a brief moment, the she-wolf had almost forgotten about her fishy prize, until Tharin reached over to grab it. Kiara balked, her head rearing back as she danced a wolf length away. The fur on her tail bristled as she shook her head, trying to communicate that the fish was not for him. It took everything the arctic female had to keep the rest of her fur smooth along her back. Her problem wasn't only that he tried to take the fish, it was more, He had tried to mate with another, and even though the heat scent had long since faded, Kiara still couldn't forgive him.

The young mother turned around and jogged over to a patch of grass where she placed her fish down. Without the strong scent in her nose, the rest of the world seemed to flood her every sense. Fall had begun, its soft, dewy scent promised change and snow. Tharin's own musk seemed to catch her attention though, and she turned to look at him. Just seeing him hurt and made her ears drop and her chest tighten.

He wasn't too sure what he'd been expecting her to do. She'd been ignoring him for so long. What was he supposed to do about it? Trying to take her food was a pretty guaranteed way to get her to actually face him. Perhaps she'd deign to share, or give it to him completely, or just run off. He didn't know. Kiara's form was still as submissive as it usually was, crouched low and avoiding meeting his eyes. It was even more than usual actually, passing into a subtle form of ignoring him, treating him with even more respect than his rank deserved. She was treating him as little more than a stranger, and it hurt to see her do that.

Now she moved. His jaws snapped against empty air, Kiara dancing away. Saki lifted her head, watching the two adults move. Tharin stayed where he was, watching her send her message. He wasn't to touch the fish. There was so much anger in her eyes, as if daring him to try and take it anyways. He knew that he could. He was stronger and higher ranked, so he could claim the fish and steal it away from her. Doing so would be wrong though. He didn't think that he could go through with such actions, and derive her of such a large prize. Stepping over to Saki he nuzzled at the small pup, indicating for her to head for the dens.

Lifting his head he looked over to Kiara. The fish was dropped on the ground in a patch that was still green, slightly damp from dew. His movement towards her was slow, almost afraid that she would turn and run from his presence. The arctic female glanced towards him, his eyes taking in her beautiful white pelt and the powerful frame behind her tiny shape. It was amazing how much strength there was in her. Whining Tharin bowed down, a little playfully. Moving over he pushed against her body, shoving to try and get her away from the fish. He didn't touch it, just waiting for her to push back.

The whole situation was awkward and Kiara felt angry for some unknown reason. As the arctic female danced away, she could see the hurt in Tharin's eyes. His large amber orbs stared at her, begging her forgiveness. Their eyes locked for a moment, until both turned to take care of things. They needed to talk, needed to work things out between them. It hurt her not to be around Tharin and she hated feeling like he had betrayed her. They were more than friends, they were packmates and Tharin had been there for Kiara when she needed him.

The circumstances in which they had meet were strange, two natural wolves meeting and hunting together. It was like something had clicked. Since then, Tharin had helped Kaira raise her pups and had been a companion for her when she had no one else to rely on. Tharin was the one who had helped Kiara into the pack, and had been by her side and protected her at night. He wasn't her mate, but he was an irreplaceable existence in her life.

With Saki gone, Kaira and Tharin were virtually alone. They stared at each other for a bit, neither one speaking or moving. It was the silver male who broke the standstill, his steps cautious and slow. Blue orbs watched him move, her muscles tense as if she might bolt at any second. A whine drifted towards her and Tharin dipped into a playful bow, causing a smile to tug at the corner of her lips. The arctic female's tail began to wag, low and slow. At last they were side by side, and Tharin gave her a little shove. His body was massive and easily outweighed her own, so the tiny bump made Kiara take a step to the side as she regained her balance.

Slowly, black lips pulled back and her jaws parted into a toothy smile. Kiara rose up on her hind legs as she tried to climb on top of Tharin, her massive head twisting so that she could gnaw on the back of his neck.

This wasn't a normal game. Tharin was trying to convince her to relax, doing his best to earn her forgiveness. The play was a little stiff, watching every movement Kiara made to see if she would reciprocate, or just turn and walk away again. The arctic female didn't respond in like, her frame still stiff, but a small quirk did appear around her lips. His tail swayed with delight, happy that just maybe he'd be getting through to her. Communicating in this way was difficult, since they didn't really have words for what had happened, but they would get through it.

Kiara's tail swayed slightly as he came over to her side, the slight bump getting her to move. She didn't have much choice with how large he was, tipping off balance and tottering for a few moments to regain her balance. Tharin lowered his head, challenging what she would do. Kiara responded by slowly joining in the play, Tharin twisting his head as she moved to grab onto his neck and hold on. He didn't quite growl, still silent in his movement, but he did let out a soft whine, moving to get away from her grasp before moving to softly nip at her sides.
#8
Slowly, almost painfully so, their play began to pick up. Nervousness became replaced my mischief and stiff tails began to wag. No words passed between them as the two unshifted wolves communicated only through body language. Smile gradually grew on their faces as the tense atmosphere dissolved. Kiara knew she should forgive Tharin, she wanted to forgive Tharin. He was her best friend, her closest friend.

None of the normal growls came from Tharin, almost as if were afraid of scaring her off. Kiara was able to momentarily grab onto Tharin's neck and bite a bit of his ears. A whine escaped his lips as he slipped out of her embrace and nipped gently at her sides. Kiara let out a playful whine as she moved her rear away from the biting male. At the same time, she went for his swinging tail, trying to catch hold of the appendage with her soft teeth. The young mother let loose the softest of growls, enticing the larger wolf further into play while being playful herself.

Kiara's tail continued to swing as her body relaxed even more. This was what she needed, a chance to relax and play. Perhaps the stress of recent events had been catching up to her, or maybe there was something wrong with her mind. Either way, Kiara was beginning to feel worlds better.
#9
It was slow picking up, Tharin's legs too stiff to pass as truly playful. It was dissolving slowly, letting the tension melt away. Kiara seemed to be finally letting go of what had kept her from approaching him, though he still felt guilt over what was a perfectly normal reaction. He felt that it was wrong. Seeing Zalen claim her had defined that boldly, but it was still Kiara's reaction when he'd come back with Adonia's scent that kept him from fully relaxing. He wanted to apologize, and make things better.

She side stepped from where he was, continuing soft growls in her voice. Seeing her lunge for his tail Tharin swept it away, unwilling to let it be taken and chewed on. For a pup perhaps he would let it happen, but this was his tail. The smallest growl slipped through, turning to butt against her and push her away from his vulnerable tail. He didn't want it to end up chewed over and enjoyed. A large paw was raised to bat at her body before he backed up, conceding ground to the submissive female.
#10
As the tension in the air dissolved between them, so did the nervous unease that had poisoned her mind. Kiara could feel herself return to normal, feel their relationship return to normal. The thought of Tharin's encounter with the other female drifted from her mind and dissipated into nothingness. Tharin hadn't mated with her, Zalen had seen to that. Instead, Tharin was there with her, trying to make it up to her. That was all that mattered. Tharin was still there and she could still rely on him.

Kiara's lunge for his tail failed as the much larger wolf easily sidestepped her attack. A tiny growl escaped his black lips, one the arctic female quickly reciprocated. Mischief blazed in her sapphire eyes as Tharin butted against her and made her stumble back a few steps. Tharin conceded ground, weary of her attacks as he batted the snowy female away. Quickly recovering, Kiara ducked low and used her speed and agility to dash underneath the silver male, tripping him as she entangled herself in his legs. Like a mountain, Tharin fell to the ground with a soft thud. Taking advantage of his moment of weakness, Kiara scrambled onto his belly and lay on top of him, her tail wagging frantically behind her as she panted triumphantly.

Jewel blue eyes stared down at Tharin, suddenly appreciating his presence and realizing what a loss she would have suffered if they had truly parted. Returning to her natural submissive behavior, Kiara gave Tharin a gentle lick as she slipped off of him. Kiara rubbed her head beneath Tharin's muzzle and whined happily. All was forgiven and forgotten.

Remembering her original purpose Kaira trotted back over to her fish. "I have to give this to Lucia. I'll see you later, Tharin."

Tharin enjoyed playing with Kiara, satisfied that the confusion faded and let them return to their normal relationship. It was fun, even if he was being more submissive than he normally was. He felt that he had to to properly earn her forgiveness. He let her push her over and trip him up, resulting in being knocked down and pinned. Tharin did his best to keep the dominant side of him down, not enjoying the feeling of being pinned particularly well. Kiara slipped back off him, Tharin rolling to stand back up.

As soon as he was up Tharin straightened and nuzzled over her head, reestablishing his dominance. He tugged on her ear and backed up, letting Kiara return to the fish. I'll see you later. It was good that he didn't have to worry about it anymore.
