nowhere to go

Oceane knew that she wasn't suppose to stray too close to the water's edge but the slow rivers that ran through the packlands were so inviting. She liked to walk along the banks and see the lite minks, otters and beavers all hard at work and play. She wished that they would play with her but the smaller creatures either paid her no attention or scampered off quick as can be when they caught sight or scent of her. She had no clue where her siblings had wandered off to today so she'd ventured on her own, though she'd rather have found someone to bother and follow around.

She sat back on her haunches and peered through the underbrush at a family of beavers and the dam that they were creating. She didn't understand why in the world they would want to build something to block the water but she thought that it looked like a nice little bridge to cross to the other side. The small puppy crept out of the cover of the brush and slowly made her way to the edge of the bank where the dam began. Testing the dam with one paw she found the surface soft and flexible but sturdy enough to hold her weight. She stepped out further onto the dam and wagged her tail proudly at what she'd done. She was going to make it to the other side of the river in no time!

Noir had started to follow the strong scent, but she was far behind, wondering if this was a good move. She seemed to irritate her darker sister more than anything. It was so sad, because it was never her intention to be bothersome. Maybe the tan little girl was a bit too quick to cry. The Aston girl would have interrupted the stalking if she had not realized where Oce’s route had gone. She was not allowed! Their mother had told them that they were not allowed to play close to the rivers and deep water. Noir herself was somewhat scared of the water, and so she had no issues staying away from the forbidden places. The child stopped in her tracks, eyes widening slowly in concern. Ocè was there all alone, and what if she fell into the water and drowned? She swayed slightly, thinking of the horrible possibilities. She could not turn around and go back to Toefur and the family den. Claudius was left back home and Attila was out as well, so if she went back there would be a few hours with pure fun and nothing else. It was not a decision she could make without feeling horrible. No, she needed to go and save her sister from the dangerous water. The girl kicked off and hurried after her darker sibling. The original plan had been to stay away from the cerulean eyed sibling today, but plans changed.

Her fast trot turned into a run, and it did not take long for her tan body to reach the river. A shiver went through the small child when the running water came into view. Oh, how she hated this. Her face turned to left and right and she spotted her sister. She was walking on some kind of construction on the river. Strange, had she made it herself? That was not the issue, however, Ocèane was out on the water! What if she tripped and fell? What if the dam broke and shattered? Oh no! Noir’s eyes almost popped out of her head. She hurried towards the dam, her tail clinging to her little belly, shivering in fear for her darker sibling. ”Ocaine!” The girl’s light voice broke and she could feel her eyes go slightly watery. ”Ocaine, No, you are not allowed!” She let out a small whimper and stopped close to the dam. Her sister had to come to her senses and come back! If she did not, Noir would tell! The tan and blue eyed girl knew that it was not nice to tell on her siblings, but this was serious rule breaking! The girl let out a serious of small whimpers, ears glued to her skull. How could Ocè be so thoughtless and do something like this? She would never understand her only sister, but that was alright as long as it was not dangerous, which this was. Silly, so silly, and Noir’s body was filled with fear, adrenaline rushing, making her want to vomit.

She was halfway across the dam when the high pitched voice calling her name caught her attention. The dark hued girl groaned and turned to scan the riverside for the owner of the voice. When she caught sight of Noir she grumbled to herself and sat down on the large damn log. Her own high pitched voice cut across the bubbling of the river, "I'm no baby! I'm going to go to the other side and yous can't stop me!" She really didn't like when her sister tried to ruin her fun and it seemed that she was always trying to ruin her fun!

The girl with the sea foam eyes turned her back on the small form and took another step towards the other side, her short little flag of a tail held high as she moved from one slippery parch of branches to the next. She could not understand why Noir wouldn't just go home and leave her alone.. She paused for a moment and turned to look back, a little idea forming in her mind as she called out. "You'll have to come get me if you want to stop me!" Her tail danced back and forth in amusement as she waited to see what the cowardly sister of hers would do.

Worry clung to her chest like a dying lover, filling her ears with a rasping breath. Her fur stood on edge, almost doubling her size. The soggy wood looked slippery and dangerous, and if Ocèane fell, the lighter hued child was afraid she would never see her irritated sister ever again. There was no close relationship between the two girls, even though she would have loved it. They were simply too different. Ocèane was more like Attila, and Noir could not bear the thought of hurting another being, no matter if it was just play. It simply was not in her nature to do such things. Two identical roses bloomed on each of her plump cheek, caused by the blood that rushed to her face when she got upset. Her baby blue orbs barely able to look at her foolish sister as she was playing with both life and death out there. It felt like someone were slowly suffocating her, and the tan girl soon found herself wheezing, feeling the ground pulsate underneath her. She felt unsteady and needed to lie down, but she couldn’t as long as terror had its firm grip of her heart. The slightly larger girl sat down in the middle of the long bridge of logs and looked in Noir’s direction. For a moment she was not sure if Ocè heard her, but then she called out some silly words. Noir got up and placed her front paws on the end of one of the many logs, feeling her heart flutter unpleasantly.

The girl remaining on the safe ground had problems coming up with a smart answer, so she ended up staring at her other sibling in silence as she got up and continued walking away from her. Oh, she wanted to cry so badly. Why did not Ocè understand that Noir just wanted what was best for her? She softly bit her under lip when her sibling called out her challenge. The tan child was naïve though, and sincerely believed her darker sister’s words. So, in order to make Ocèane come back was to go out there and get her. She shivered, feeling the fear crushing her with its increasing weight. The worst part was that her sibling seemed to find this whole thing amusing. This was not fun at all, this was very dangerous, and why couldn’t her sister realize this? The girl swallowed as she clumsily climbed up on the log on the top of the bridge. Her limbs quickly lost all their strength and started to wobble like jelly. She bit her own tongue in order to keep a sob from revealing itself. She could do this. She just had to get Ocèane and then they would go home and Noir was determined to tell their mother what Ocèane had done even when Noir had told her that she was not allowed to. Her light tail parted with her chubby belly, waving in the air as a balance stick. It could almost seem like a happy wag, but this was very far from the actual truth.

With teeny tiny mouse steps, the little child dared herself further out on the bridge. She could feel her belly boil with sickness as she slowly closed up to her sister. Then she could not do it any longer. Her vision started to play tricks with her, and she felt awfully lightheaded. She clung to the wet wood and closed her eyes, shivering in fear. The sound of water all around her. It was horrible. There were few things the girl hated, but water was one of them. The scent and sound and just knowing she was almost in the middle of a rushing stream, it was just too much. The girl was almost blinded with fear, and she let out a high pitched shriek as she felt the whole world tumbling down on her. This was worse than dying.

The chocolate beige girl had not expected her sibling to actually come out onto the hodgepodge bridge made of sticks and debris. In fact, when she turned around she'd thought that she'd left her lighter pelted sibling far behind on the other bank. She however was very much wrong and as she neared the other shore she was greeted with one of the more horrible sounds she'd ever heard. The hair along her spine stood on end as she startled, almost losing her balance on the slippery wood and crashing headfirst into the water.

Catching herself the small girl whipped around to confront her sister on the horrible sound that had obviously come from her maw. Instead of seeing her sibling on the other bank she was rather shocked to find that Noir actually had ventured out onto the dam after her. She was rather irritated at first that her sister had got herself stuck in the middle of the dam but even Oceane wasn't that mean just to leave the foolish girl there by herself.

Grumbling to herself and sighing impatiently for it seemed that her adventure was going to be postponed Oceane turned about and headed back towards the middle of the dam. "Noir! What's wrong wif you!" she called in annoyance as she picked her way back across the slippery logs and branches to save her silly sibling from herself.

The child squealed, unable to reopen her eyes after they first had closed. Dying would be much easier than to live another moment with the purebred fear living within her. The sound of the water filled her ears, and she could already feel the sensation of water filling her lungs and slowly pressing life out of her. She was certain this was the end. There was no past nor any future that she could exist in. The presence was crushingly real, and escape was impossible. Through the sound of water and death, Oceane’s words managed to get through, but it did not make the situation easier for the little child. She was dying and her darker sibling reacted as if she was being a cry-baby again. The world was a horrible place with horrible people.

The tan child squeaked pathetically at her tougher sibling, unable to create a proper answer for the other girl. She hung on for a few more moments before a word finally managed to find its way through her lips. ”Mommy..”, the girl whimpered pathetically, wishing she could see her mother a last time.

Little Oceane waddled her way back across the sticks and logs that the beavers had so cleverly pieced together to form her own personal bridge from one side of the river to the next. She so wished that Noir hadn't decided to tag along when she'd issued her the challenge, it would have made things so much simpler and she would have been able to escape without having to worry, that was, until she returned home and found that Noir had infact tattled about what she'd done. No, instead she was having to maneuver her way back across the mass she'd just returned from to save the chubby rump of her kid sister.

When she finally reached the small tan form that was curled up cowering in a lump in the middle of the damn she nosed her as she whimpered and moaned. The one word that came out of her maw made Oceane shake her head in disgust as she informed her tiny sister words there were probably going to come as a disappointment. "Mommy's not here to save you sis. Now get up!" Oceane never stopped to think for a moment what would happen if either of them slipped from their place upon the damn slick branches of the dam but she had more important things to do anyways, though those had all been laid aside for the moment to save her silly pathetic sibling who seemed to know how to ruin her fun.

Should we ask Tammi to throw Tayui in? I cannot really imagine how Noir is getting out of this by herself.

........Her sister’s words were so cruel, but even through her upset and chaotic mind, Noir knew that this was only the truth. There was no mommy there, no mommy to save her Noir from falling down from her spot and drown! Oce’s nose poked her, and it would have been comforting if Noir’s mind had been clearer. The horrible thing was that the tan child had managed to get up there all on her own, but now when she was here, she felt completely stuck. Her fear had gotten the best of her, and she did not know how she would be able to escape this. Her darker sister had told her to get up, but she was most likely not able to understand the blind terror the lighter child was experiencing. There were phobias, and there were phobias. Noir was terrified.

........After a few additional series of sobs, the Aston girl managed to open her golden-blue eyes just a tiny bit. It only made it worse, and she felt bile at the back of her tongue. The world span and she felt dizzy. The world darkened and a weird noise filled her ears. "Oce, Noir.. is feels not good" Another reason to hold on to the wood. She really needed mommy here. "Find mommy, pleeaaase" The desperation in the girl’s voice was obvious.

Oceane couldn't understand just what in the world was wrong with her sister. She was afraid of things but she'd never done anything like this. She gave a gruff sigh as she tried to grab ahold of Noir's ruff and attempt to drag her over the modge-podge sticks and limbs in the dam. She didn't get far and she sat there panting. Her sister was just too large to budge and she whined. "Noir, get up.. you're too big to carry.." She pawed at the side of her sister's face as she realized that she couldn't do anything to help her sibling.

The sobs that broke from her sister made her regret taunting her sibling and making her go out on the dam after her. She sat there with her little ears drooping as she tried to figure just what to do but nothing came to her mind until Noir moaned. She didn't want to get mommy, she would be in so much trouble if she did, but she knew that there was no other way to get Noir off the bridge she'd so happily began to cross all alone just moments before. Finally Oceane sadly admitted her defeat and whispered. "Ok Noir.. I'll get mommy.." Boy was she going to get it now.

Little Oceane threw back her head and let out a mighty (little) howl for their mother. The mixed emotions so noticeable in her voice as she let the world know they were in trouble. She just really hoped that she wouldn't be in as much trouble as she could imagine.

I hope I got all the details right!

Tayui heard the call, jerking her head up in reply. She remained still as she flicked her ears forward, straining to hear the sound of her daughter's call through the trees. Ocèane was calling for her. Tayui did not know why, but she could hear the distress in her daughter's voice. Tayui fumbled as she tried to put her book down, hands shaking slightly as her heart thumped in her chest. It was a book on stuffed animals. She had hoped to find some way to make Ocèane her own stuffed animal of sorts, or perhaps find something her daughter would appreciate. She'd spent much of the day flipping through her books looking for ideas. But her search was promptly forgotten as she dropped everything -- literally -- and sprinted from the clearing in hopes of finding her daughter. She paused, resting her hand on a tree, to respond with a howl of her own and let Ocèane know she was on her way.

She was not too far. The wind carried Noir and Ocèane's scents to her, offering her some semblance of warning. Tayui arrived to find Noir just barely clinging onto... onto something. Tayui could not make out what it was, but it looked like Noir was just barely keeping herself from being torn away and tossed into the current. Tayui rushed past Ocèane, stopping abruptly by the water's edge. It looked as though Noir had crossed a beaver's dam -- hadn't Tayui warned them not to do that? -- and was not faring too well.

Tayui tested the water with one foot. It was freezing. She frowned. But she would be fine. Her birthpack was in a land much, much colder than this. She could handle it. She would be able to get Noir. Save her. Tayui lowered herself into the water, moving quickly. She paused only long enough to grab a branch half-submerged in the mud before continuing on.

The water in front of the beaver dam was peaceful enough, but on the other side, it was choppy. Dangerous. Tayui moved quicker.

She reached the middle of the river, swimming awkwardly. She had little practice swimming in her Optime form, but it was the only way. "Noir," she shouted at last, only then realizing she hadn't said anything to her daughter yet. "Grab the branch between your teeth. I've got you. I'll help you over to this side, here, come on sweetie," she said, doing her best to lean over the beaver dam with the stick. She did not want to test the strength of the beaver dam, so she instead leaned over it awkwardly, extending the branch as she would another arm.

........ To her worst fear, Ocèane caught hold of her ruff and started to drag her towards wherever there was no water. Noir could not think straight any longer. The water filled her entire world, and now this was all that was. She resisted Oce’s attempt to help her, clinging to the wet piece of tree, her claws creating shallow lines in the material when her sibling’s strength moved her a bit. The furry puff of stressed fur was unable to reply to her sister, and only let out a high pitched scream when a paw poked her in the face. She was going to fall off and die!! Her heart throbbed painfully against her chest, and it seemed like the simple task of breathing slowly became harder the longer this lasted. The girl was unable to notice her mother until she was very close. Noir’s name was shouted and temporarily shook the child out of her paralysation. It was Mommy’s voice. She was here to save her!

........
A new explosion of tears came with this realization, and there was now a tiny chance that there was a happy ending here somewhere, possibly within reach. But. Her mother was in the water! She had a stick and wanted Noir to grab it with her jaws and hold on to it. What did Tayui want? Was if she pulled Noir out in the water! The child was already scared half to death, so the new wave of misery that hit the child was barely noticeable at all. Yet, she was Mommy and knew what was best. She would never let Noir die. Slowly, ever so slowly the light girl managed to gather enough courage to lift her face up from the wet lodge and grab the offered branch between her teeth. The girl whined pathetically as she tried to get up on her feet, shaking worse than any jelly looking dessert ever made. Her tail pressed itself desperately to her belly before it was forced to point out in order to guide her balance.

Oceane sat by idly with her ears pinned back against her skull in guilt a a small whine rose from her throat. She knew that she was going to be in big trouble when her mother realized just how Noir had ended up out in the middle of the river on their little dam bridge. Her unhappy eyes watched as their mommy dove into the cold waters and began to swim over to where Noir was clinging fast to the branches and twigs that were the making of the beaver's home. Oceane oddly enough was also hoping that the Beavers had abandoned it long ago since it was definitely getting a good beating by the wolf family today.

Her eyes seemed to brighten as Tayui made it to where Noir was and she realized that with their mother there Noir was slowly trying to move closer and closer to the comforts that only a parent could bring. She lifted herself up off the ground as she tried to make certain that Noir was going to be okay. It was hard to tell though since now being on the side of the river again her sister was quite a distance away. Guilt flushed through her again as she was reminded that Noir wouldn't be in this situation if she hadn't pushed her into thinking she had to follow her across.
