He felt the eyes of his sister scorch his body and ignored them. She couldn’t hurt him as long as his mother was here. Alone, he would have fled from the girl and hid. Elijah’s baby-blue eyes stared upwards at his mother’s face, reading the expressions that performed on her face. Like the merle-boy, she too was not fond of the girl. This was all right. Elvira was a monster and she frightened them all.

His mother’s eyes turned to him, and the boy opened his mouth widely in a smile reminiscent of the one that he had seen Ezekiel so often wear. Wagging his tail, the puppy rose up onto his haunches and pressed his feet against her leg. His head tilted to an extreme angle, focused on her alone. The boy ignored his bratty sister, but said nothing.
