The coyote hybrid watched as Vieira squirmed, her brilliant chartreuse eyes growing bright with flame as she watched the other canine squirm. Eris had been quite fond of Asta, really—he had never lifted his hand in malice to her, nor subjected her to anything like what he'd put his very daughter through. He had been the reason for her good upbringing in Eterne—without claim to him, she would have died in the open wilderness, for sure. At the pale furred canine's response, Eris drew back again, growling softly in disgust. “Still useless, too,” she exclaimed, her arms still crossed tightly over her chest. Now she flung them down to her sides and balled her fists. The answer was right here in front of her, but she could no more grasp at it than when she had been thousands of miles away. She was no closer to finding the truth now than when she had first trudged through the desert, alone for only the second time in her life.

No matter how hard she tried, the blood and the bones showed her nothing. There were limitations to the magic, she had known, but she had tried nonetheless—countless birds and squirrels lined the trail behind her all the way to Eterne from the numerous fruitless attempts the sable Tirones had made at seeing her own past. Frustration boiled in her, and her yellow-green eyes narrowed. “You're not even supposed to be here, you know,” she said sharply. “I sent you here chasing what I thought was a ghost,” the sable-furred hybrid said. Kaena was supposed to have been dead, and Vieira was supposed to have died on her way here. “How'd you even make it all the way up here?” she asked, tilting her head to the side. She was curious—Vieira didn't have Itzcitla or anything like him to give her sustenance on the trip.
