the days go by, they pass right through us

Angelique. Smile Geneva is in Optime form.

If my silence made you leave,
then that would be my worst mistake.

The days stretched on, a little emptier now that Addison was gone. There was a distinctive lack of sound, a lack of lightness to the morning. Geneva knew from the start that Addison would grow up, it was inevitable. Children would always be transformed and changed by time. But now that she was nearly grown, she no longer had to stay in Phoenix Valley. She had made the decision to move on from Phoenix Valley and from her adoptive family. Geneva had felt close to the girl, Jefferson's adoptive daughter. She had watched her learn and grow, and while she was sad to see the girl go, she was glad to see that she had become self sufficient and independent.

Months and months ago, when she had first joined Phoenix Valley, she had met Addison here at the Quarry. The pup had wandered out on to a ledge and the height had been dizzying. Swallowing her fears, the gray wolfess had gone out on to the ledge and brought her back to solid ground. She could still recall the taste of terror thick on her tongue. That day had been unforgettable for her - it had been the first time she had seen the chinks in Jefferson's armor, something beneath the cool exterior that was warm.

The woman found herself at the Quarry once more, walking through her memories. The woman was afraid of heights and did not often meander too close to the edge of anything. But today she crept, as carefully as she could, toward the edge of the limestone to look into the water below. And as she did, she lost her balancing, skidding forward and she tumbled into the water below. On her way down, her body scraped against the cliff face. The water closed over her head and she struggled to breathe, kicking her feet reflexively until she broke the surface and took in a burning mouthful of oxygen. Her arms burned and she shook the water out of her eyes as she made her way to the shore.
