xxxxxThe moon had long since set, vanishing behind the tree line leaving behind the blackest hours of night. Hints of dawn touched the horizon, casting a light pinkish glow to the skyline, but the western sky remained black and starry, still held in the grasp of night until morning broke. Breath rising around his muzzle in a pale cloud, bristling coat lightly dusted with frost, the coyote padded through the forest quiet as a ghost, slinking between the shadowy trees leaving behind only a trail of footprints to announce his passage. Sleep was a rarity for the nocturnal beast, even when the sun did rise and the day dawn. Since he'd been a child and nature scream against that willing release, allowing one to sink into darkness and nightmares unbidden. Death he didn't fear, but instinct revolted against such a weak and unprotected state, so close to that time of a soul's release it sent such a discomfort through the creature. He'd rather remain awake and lucid until his body began to slow and fail, collapsing into a dreamless state filled with demons he couldn't remember.
xxxxxShadows shifted and reached for him even when he was awake, twisting around his form and whispering things into his ear that should of sent a shiver down his spine, but such was different. These he could ignore, moving on without a second thought and drowning them out just as he drown out the night time chirping of crickets and the hoo-hoo of an owl, wings silent as it glided on the night air seeking mice beneath the forest floor. But when he slept they swept over him, unable to fight as they filled his consciousness. Breath escaped his nose in a quick exhale, finding he'd reached the edge of the trees without even realizing where he was going. The house loomed ahead, stolen from the wolves to remain a castle for the royalty of Inferni. But such a castle whose king's presence didn't please him would never be a haven for the prince, and so instead Samael simply slunk around the outer edges, paws crushing the wintry remnants of what was once a garden as he headed on his way, destination nothing more than where his feet chose to carry him.
