ohshit a gargoyle. 300 +

Kansas stood at the edge of the field, icy eyes locked upon the windmill. He gazed at the beautiful, ancient structure for two reasons. He always loved looking at it, especially from a distance like this, when it spun easily with the shifting breeze. Today, though, there was also a special reason, and that was because he actually needed to be sure there was enough wind. It didn't take him long to smile, for it churned at a steady pace, reassuring him beyond the way his bangs flew about in front of his face. It really was a perfect day for what he and Cambria had planned. On top of the wind being sufficient, the sky was crystal clear, the air brisk but not freezing. Thoroughly excited, Kansas held the kite carefully against his chest, its string and spool resting in one hand, and ran across the field toward the windmill. He went as fast as he could, thrilled by the wind in his face, until he'd reached the middle of the field, with the windmill still a couple hundred feet away.

He couldn't wait for his daughter to get there. He'd told her to meet him this early afternoon, that he had a surprise for her. What she didn't know was that he actually had two. He was proud of himself for having planned this for her; she deserved it after all she'd been through. But he hoped she'd enjoy it as much as he hoped she would. Pushing this concern out of his mind, Kansas got on his knees, one nail in his mouth as he examined the kite. He made sure the frame was in place and that the patches he'd sewn over what had been old holes were still holding. Everything was fine. Giddy, the boy sat cross-legged in front of the kite, hiding it so Cambria wouldn't see it when she approached. His worn knapsack hung around his shoulder, with her other surprise tucked sneakily inside one of its inner pockets. He sighed happily, resting his chin on his fist, and waited.

ohsnap butterflies :o 300+

Cambria was still getting used to her optime form. It felt so weird still. She felt like she was so high up in the air and her proportions were all off. Was it this hard for everyone to get used to? Surely it must be. The Marino had gone outside and shifted and practiced walking back and forth in front of the mansion; the ground outside was a little more forgiving than the floors inside the house if she fell. Thankfully though she hadn't really full-out fell, just stumbled a lot. She hoped that she would start getting the hang of this soon and wouldn't look like such a goof. No one had made fun of her, but she didn't like looking so silly. She had really only just started to be somewhat graceful in her four-legged form and now she had to learn something new. It was a little frustrating, but she was determined. The girl wanted to attain the same poise and grace as the rest of the adults.

The Dreamer brushed the bangs from her eyes as she looked up to check the position of the sun. Yikes! She better get over to the windmill! Her father had asked her to meet him there. Taking a deep breath and concentrating hard on her movements she started walking as brusquely as she could manage. She didn't want to be late and make her dad wait! He had said he'd have a surprise for her and honestly she couldn't wait. A giddy smile formed on her face the closer she got to her destination. Any surprise from her father was going to be a good one, she knew.

Soon the large old structure of the windmill came into sight and then as she got closer she saw her dad. Instantly her face lit up and her tail began to wag in a happy rhythm. It had been a while since she had done something with her dad, just the two of them, and she was incredibly excited. "Daddy!" she called out, waving her hand at him. She would have liked to run over and and hug him tightly but she knew if she tried to run she'd fall flat on her face and if that happened she'd probably cry and ruin their nice day together. Cambria wasn't going to let anything tarnish her time with him.

Kansas was perhaps just as excited as Cambria was. He couldn't keep from tapping his fingers idly against his chin, a foot bouncing speedily as he squinted into the horizon for any sign of his daughter. Before long, he spotted her, a tall and lean child moving carefully across the field. He longed to make out the expression on her face, and when she was close enough for him to discern it he immediately felt a rush of happiness. His pale eyes lit up in the special way Cambria caused them to. He felt instantly wonderful, loving the excited sound of her voice as she called out to him. Kansas didn't have a favorite child. He loved all of them equally. But he felt he and Cambria had a special relationship, a strong bond and a deepened understanding of one another.

Hey, little sweetie! he returned brightly. Kansas grinned lopsidedly, thinking it cute that she was unsteady in her Optime form. He remembered very well his first few days of moving on two legs; it had felt very strange and very awkward. He wasn't making fun of her; he understood the caution with which you had to move in order to keep your balance. She was just precious. That was all.

He remained seated, his tail draped over the kite, hoping she hadn't spotted it yet. Okay, here's... part... of the surprise. Grinning more broadly, the pale wolf reached behind him and pulled out the worn yet beautiful violet kite. Kansas stood up and held it out for her to touch or hold it if she wished. It's a kite. I've been waiting for a windy day for us to try to fly it..., he explained. I read about how to do it. Not... uh, not sure I really understand how to do it, but I'm sure we'll figure it out. His smile waned a little, but not completely. If you want.

hehe :3 300+

Cambria also felt a special connection between her and her father. Of course she loved all her family with the same intensity of love, but she and her father were the two that were the most similar to one another. She had that same quiet demeanor that he had and they were both the most comfortable around their loved ones. It had been so long since they had gotten to do anything together and she felt the excitement that was already taking her over bubble up even higher and her eyes sparkled like light reflecting off the sea. Finally was close enough to him and as he greeted her in return she couldn't help but giggle happily, her tail waving from side to side. "Hi!" She still wanted to hug him, but she would wait until he stood up. If she got down to sit it could take her some considerable effort to get back to her feet.

Her father mentioned the surprise and she looked at him eagerly. There was more than one part to the surprise? She hadn't expected that! What could it all be? But soon her thoughts were wiped clean as the pretty purple object was held out before her. The girl's eyes grew wide in admiration. "Oooo! What is it?" By the time she had asked her dad had already launched into his explanation of the object. So it could fly? Looking at the thing she wasn't entirely sure how it could fly, it didn't have wings, but she knew that her father must be right about it. Figuring out how to make the pretty thing fly would be fun. "Of course I want to! How is it supposed to work?" Cambria looked over the thing critically, trying to imagine in her mind how it would manage to fly like the birds and the bugs.

He was extraordinarily nervous to see her reaction, and he only realized this when her gaze upon the purple kite became skeptical. He felt his chest burn the slightest bit, and surreptitiously bit his lip as his pretty chocolate furred daughter examined it. Perhaps she would think his idea stupid. Maybe she wanted nothing to do with this colorful human object, something likely extremely oblique to her in nature. But after a few painful seconds, she reassured him that she wanted to try flying the kite, to which he grinned both with relief and renewed excitement. Great! he returned softly. All you do is run into the wind, and the kite flies into the air. Then you... kind of steer it using the string. You can make it do, um, tricks, and things. He paused, then shook his head. He was making it sound like some sort of creature. But I want to show you what else I got you, first.

Kansas looked away from her, and reached into his bag. He rooted around until he found the inner compartment that held the gift. For a moment he fumbled, trying to enclose the entire object in his hand. His long fingers eventually wrapped around the little necklace, but he peaked inside his satchel to make sure it was completely hidden. Grinning, butterflies in his stomach because he wasn't sure if she'd like it, Kansas held his fist out to her, palm up. A few seconds passed, and then he opened his hand. The necklace lay there, a little tangled—but the charms glimmered pale in the sunlight. He knew how much his baby adored butterflies. And she was so much like a butterfly herself, with her unassuming, quiet nature. He'd thought the necklace would suit her. Hopefully she felt the same. D-do you like it?

Awwww :3 300+

Cambria was oblivious to her father's anxiety about whether or not she would want to fly the kite with him or not. It never even occurred to her that he could possibly think that she wouldn't do anything with him. No matter what he had suggested she would have been happy to do it with him, even if it was something as simple as sitting in the mansion and having him read to her. The girl didn't really care what the activity was, if she was with him then she knew that she would have a good time based on that simple fact. She always had a good time with her dad. As he explained how it worked she was better able to picture how it would all work. "Oh! Okay! I think I get it." She wasn't sure what he meant when he said it could do tricks, but it certainly sounded exciting! "The tricks sound fun! Do you know how to make it do the tricks?" She, of course, didn't have the first clue.

Then he came back to this other part of the surprise. He had gotten her something else? That was so nice of him! He hadn't needed to, the kite and learning to fly it with him would have certainly been enough, but she watched with an excited light in her eyes as he dug around in his bag. Finally he turned back around to her and held out his fist. The girl examined his closed hand curiously and squeaked a little when it opened and revealed the shiny object inside. As she took it in and realized what it was her mouth hung open and she could feel a few tears sting at her eyes. Cambria had always dreamed of having a pretty necklace like her momma had, and no necklace could have possibly fit her better than the one her father had found for her.

"DADDY!" she squealed happily and she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. "It's so pretty daddy! I love it! Thank you so much!" Her head turned to plant a kiss on his cheek. Cambria had the best father in the world.

It was probably better that Cambria could not detect Kansas' uncertainty. He didn't like to think of his children realizing how sensitive he was; how worried and self-conscious he could be. He wanted them to view him as someone who could protect them, rather than as the pansy he was deep inside. Especially not Cambria. She was so delicate in his eyes, like a china doll. She needed to be handled carefully; reassured by his presence, not made to feel uncomfortable. It was not her job to make him happy... though in all honesty, she had a lot of leverage over him. He hadn't really let on how painful her ordeal with the cocaine had been for him—it just wasn't about him, and no one needed to know. In any case, she appeared excited enough about the kite, her smiling face all the reassurance he needed.

Next came her reaction to the gift. He really thought it was beautiful, almost as beautiful as his little girl. But she, of course, far outshone it. Her happiness made his whole body feel warm, and his tail picked up a steady beat behind him. She was excited about it. She liked it. He couldn't have asked for a more perfect thanks. As she threw her little arms around his neck and kissed his cheek, Kansas lifted his his Cambi off the ground and held her tight for a moment. He wanted her to know he could hold her, if she ever needed him to. He set her down, beaming. You're so welcome, honey. I'm glad you like it. Here, turn around and I'll put it on you, he said, asking more than demanding. If she didn't want to wear it know, he'd understand, but he really wanted to see it on her. Afterward, they'd get to the kites.

Sorry, this is kinda blah D: 300+

Even though she was growing up she still had the image of her parents as these kind of immortal figures and that they could do no wrong. Deep down she understood and knew that they were not perfect, because nobody was, but if anyone came close to perfection it was her mother and father. She would have never imagined that her dad wasn't nearly as confident as she saw him. He was so smart and so sweet and caring. Cambria only saw his good qualities and even if there were some flaws she didn't recognize them. The only one in their family that she ever thought of as flawed was herself. There had been the bad thing and she wasn't brave like Gotham or outgoing like Amata. It was odd that she viewed her own shy and quiet nature as something not quite right but when she saw it in her father it was only perceived as good.

The girl was amazed that he had found a necklace that fit her so well. The way she saw it, the only person who could have found her such a perfect and amazing gift was him. She had always hoped that she would get a necklace from him, but for some reason had been shy to ask about it. Not to mention it was only a few days ago that she had been able to start shifting and truly enjoy a necklace and wear it. As he picked her up she giggled with pure elation. It was moments like these that the girl treasured above all else. It was these kind of moments where she felt like she was just fine and none of her quirks were a bad thing. Her tail waved back and forth as she was set back down and he asked her to turn around so he could put it on her. "Okay!" With more grace than she thought herself capable of she spun around and waited to feel the slight chain to be clasped around her neck.

Cambria reminded him so much of himself as a puppy. It was as endearing as it was frightening; if they really were as alike as he suspected, then his little girl lacked confidence in herself—just as he had as a child. He figured that such a thing wasn't too uncommon, and nor was it something to worry too much about. Because Kansas would fix it. He wanted to make her feel valued, and beautiful, and special. All the things that were true about her, and that she needed to believe. He had read that young women who had good relationships with their fathers were stronger in their adult lives than those who didn't, in their relationships and in themselves. He wanted this for Cambria more than anything. And he worried about it more with her than with Amata, because his other daughter was definitely surer of herself than was Cam.

The necklace had fallen into his hands several days ago, but he'd wanted to await this special day to give it to her. That way, she could wear it shifted, and take it on and off whenever she wished with ease. Kansas waited for her to sit and turn around, smiling all the while. He unclasped the chain, draped it around her slim neck, and closed the clasp. His excitement rose; he held the kite in his hands and walked around to face her, studying the necklace. Beautiful! he told her, still grinning. He hoped she knew just how beautiful she was. Maybe she would look down at the necklace and remember that she had parents who believed in her, both he and Savina. Here; you take the spool... he offered a hand to help her to her feet. ... And run backward, with the wind at your back. I'll release the kite, and it.... should... fly.

I love dis thread :3 300+

It was strange, she noticed some thing so easily and other things completely escaped her. Well, not completely escaped her. She noticed them, but they didn't stick out as much as the negatives did and she couldn't say why. It was mostly when she was left to her own thoughts that the lack of confidence and feeling of inadequacy hit her. That and when she was out of her element and away from the things that made her feel comfortable. When she was with her family though, like she was now, all those worrisome thoughts and feelings seemed to melt away and all that was left was a good, warm feeling. Like she was where she was meant to be and with beings that loved and cherished her. This was one of the reasons the girl had never had any desire to leave Crimson Dreams, even for a short while. It was here and with her loving family that she felt good, about herself and overall. Why would she possibly want to be anywhere else? Her father loved her just the way she was, and that did amazing things for the girl, whether she noticed them or not.

Cambria felt the necklace drape over her chest and an elated feeling jolted through her. She had her own necklace! She was wearing it! And best of all her daddy had given it to her. She knew that whenever she had it on she'd feel better, because it would make her think of her dad and how much he loved her. It gave her a boost of confidence that she had not expected. Chocolate tail waved expectantly as he walked around to look at it on her, eyes shimmering with hope. Of course he would never say anything other than she was pretty, but still she craved those words and his approval like the air she breathed. When that single word came from him her smile grew exponentially, crinkling her face. "Thank you Daddy!" she piped softly once again. If she had ever felt beautiful, it was right here in this moment.

The young Marino took her father's hand and got back to her feet and took the spool, looking at it curiously. She listened to his instructions and stood there for a moment to take it all in and when she thought she had it she nodded her head once. "Okay! Here goes!" Holding tight onto the spool she started to run as fast as she was able without stumbling and waited to hear word from her father on whether or not it was working.

He worried that Cambria was as insecure as she was because of what had happened to her as a young child. Would she have turned out differently if she'd never stumbled upon Naniko's drugs? That was inevitable. And could he have stopped that from happening, somehow? The questions still plagued him, and probably would until the day he died. Perhaps he felt a deeper obligation to her because he may have "allowed" what had happened to Cambria to happen. All the better that it was her; he felt the two of them understood each other better than in most father-daughter relationships.

And Kansas knew she wasn't a weak, helpless thing. He saw intelligence in her eyes, and heard it in her words. A weaker child may not have been able to pull out of such a hole as the one caused by exposure to such a terrible drug, at such a young age. Skeptical a creature as he was, the man had a feeling that his daughter would be just fine in the end. She'd be able to use all the strength inside her to pull past whatever obstacles came her way. He just needed to be sure he was there to help her. You're welcome, he responded to her thanks, softly and with a smile. She had the spool in her hands, and he watched her run backward with remarkable ease. He marveled at this (reiteration that she was extremely smart) as he released the kite. It spun in the wind as it spiraled upward, but Cam would need to hold on if it was to stay. 'Kay, you can stop, sweetie. Just hold on to it. Kansas ran to her side, standing beside her to guide her, ready to bounce back to the kite if it fell and they needed to try again.

Cambria did her best to never think about what had happened to her. For months it had been the only thing she could think of and now she didn't want to have it plague her anymore than it already did. What had happened to her felt like a black mark on her soul that would never go away and white monsters haunted her some nights. She hated that powder and she hated the wolf that had brought it into the mansion. Nothing would ever convince her to feel otherwise on either subject of her torture and she was glad the old Commander was gone. Hopefully she would never ever have to see her or think about her again. Out of sight, out of mind. Thankfully none of these demons worried the girl now. She was with her father, and he chased all of the bad things away simply with his presence.

She ran, holding onto the spool and mostly focusing on going as fast as she could and not fall down. That would be really bad if she fell and somehow managed to mess up the kite that her daddy had no doubt worked hard to find. Her cream-tipped ears flicked back as she heard his voice and gradually she came to a stop and her sea foam eyes looked up to the sky and saw the kite dancing in the wind. It was much more beautiful and graceful than it looked like it possibly could have been and she looked at the object with adoration, wishing to join it. The spool in her hands tugged and she remembered the instruction that she had to hold tight. Cambi smiled as he joined her. "It's so pretty daddy!" She was so glad they were getting to do this together. It wouldn't have been as special otherwise.

Kansas didn't want to bring up what had happened to Cambria because he had been able to figure the truth already. She wanted to leave it as far behind her as possible, he suspected. That didn't mean he didn't want her to talk about it. He wished she would. But he knew that if she felt the desire to bring it up, she would, and he would undoubtedly try his best likewise to help her from there. He did know that it did no good to pry without welcome. That was one of his own pet peeves, though he was sure it was true for most. All he could do was make it possible for Cambria to be happy; he honestly felt he'd do anything for that.

The girl stopped when he told her to. He saw her face tilt into the sun to watch the dancing kite, and his heart soared. She looked so perfectly content in that moment, and she shone brighter than the sun. He was glad that the kite did not fail them, but rather darted about serenely in the wind several yards above them. Kansas ran to the chocolate-furred girl, resting a hand on her shoulder when he reached her and simply watching the kite with her for a few seconds. He looked at her and grinned boyishly, taking the taut string as she held the spool and pulling it slightly to the left and down. The kite did a nice little circular swoop before continuing its solitary tango in the sky. That's one trick, I suppose, be said with a small laugh. He gestured at the string, so that she would try some things herself if she wished. His eyes found the lilac kite, so much more beautiful and alive in the sky than it had seemed before his daughter had made it fly.

Perhaps one day she would wish to talk about what had happened to her, but now it was still too close. Even thinking about it still made a chill run up her spin and her heart clenched in fear. It brought tears to her eyes that would not stop until someone made her feel safe again. What scared her the most about it, especially as she got older, was the sensation her body had had of wanting more of the powder. She simply couldn't understand why she would want more after how awful it had been. Even if she couldn't understand it, she knew that it wasn't good and it frightened her that she had felt that way. Why anyone would ever want to have that horrible stuff around was beyond her and an unforgivable offense in her mind.

When the girl felt her father's hand on her shoulder she couldn't help but lean into him and smile. Sometimes she wished she could be small again like she had been when he had carried her to that beach and they had met Mr. Jefferson. She couldn't think of a time where she felt more secure than in the arms of her daddy. Cambria knew that she would never be that small again, but as long as he was never more than a howl away then she would be happy. She watched curiously as he tugged on the string of the kite and squealed with excitement as the kite responded to the tug in the air. "That's so neat daddy!" The girl wasn't really sure what would make the kite do another trick like that, but she would give it a try. Holding onto the spool tightly with one hand, the other moved to the string. She copied what her father had done, but in the other direction and it did another swoop. Her tail wagged happily. "I wonder what else it can do, I don't want to do something wrong and break it..." It would be very upsetting if something happened to their kite.

End soon? 300 +

He knew there was always the possibility that Cambria would fall into a drug habit again. Oh, but what if she longed for it again? After she'd gotten into the cocaine, and when she was suffering from such horrid withdrawals, the young father had almost wished to give her more to make her pain stop. But he'd never, ever do that to her. Or else today she probably would not be standing next to him, so carelessly flying this kite he'd brought her. He was so grateful that Cam had not become resentful toward himself and her mother for not giving her more powder when her body had thought it needed it. That she'd been too young to think this far into the course of a possible addiction.

He watched her take the spool and string, making the kite do a pretty swoop in the sky. Awesome, he said softly. Here's one more thing; he said, gently taking the spool in his hands. The kite leveled out and stalled in the sky. Kansas moved his hands with his words so Cambria could get a grasp on what to do if she wanted to try this trick. Tug on the string to make it turn flat on its, uh, "belly," then walk forward and... pull the string a little more, The kite had flipped upside down, and as he walked forward a few feet and pulled on the slack string, it spun around belly-up like spinning top. The pale man turned and jogged back to Cambria, offering her the spool again. Just play around with it. I'll watch. He grinned and folded his arms across his chest, calm eyes never leaving his bright little girl. The sun shone through her chocolate fur, and she positively glowed. It was the most wonderful thing he'd ever looked at.

Sure! SoSuWriMo 378

She had never resented her parents for not giving her more of the powder and she had been terrified by the fact that it had craved more of the drug. She had felt no pleasurable effects from sniffing the stuff, it had been a horrible experience. While she hadn't realized it at the time, looking back she knew that she had been close to death while in the grips of the drug and what it had done to her little body and mind. Why anyone would ever willingly take such a horrible powder was beyond her and it only made her hatred and fear towards the woman that had had it in their home grow. Cambria wasn't prone to such negative feelings directed towards another, but this case was an exception. She hated Naniko and blamed her fully for what had happened. She would never forgive her, not ever, and she hoped that she never had to see her again. It would be best if she could be wiped from her memory completely, though she knew that would never happen. It was burned into her psyche, never to go away.

The girl smiled brightly up at her father, her tail wagging wildly in the excitement and happiness that were flowing through her. Eagerly she handed the spool over to him, incredibly curious to see this other trick with the kite that he apparently knew. Carefully she watched his movements and listened to his words, not wanting to miss anything. Then her sea foam eyes shot back up to the sky to watch how it had affected the kite. She clapped her hands as it spun around, the movement mesmerizing and dizzying. When he came back over to her she took the spool and moved once again to copy what he had shown her. "Okay!" Delicate fingers pulled on the string and she moved forward and pulled more, the kite high above following her actions and spinning around as it had before. A gleeful giggle bubbled up from her chest as she ran around with the kite. The girl really couldn't think of a time where she had felt so happy and had so much fun. Cambria hoped that she and her father would do this again, and soon.
