These City Walls, They Hold no Love for Me

Element smiled wryly. Did BIOS really need to repay him? Element himself was simply glad that he found someone like himself, someone who simply and completely adored knowledge and writing and reading and poetry, and was willing to take part in the knowledge that Element shared. He simply shook his head and smiled, a smile broad and genuine, and leaned down in the dirt.

He wrote a simple word - 'tree'. He made a cross in the dirt, followed by a short line with a curve at the end and two half-circles with lines through the middle, like they were broken. Letters. The letters forming 'tree'.

"There are letters that make up words," he said, "And words that stand for things. This is 'tree.' It's made up of the letter 't', the letter 'r' and the letter 'e'." He wrote each of these letters out in the dirt, so that BIOS could see, and said their names while pointing at them. "You can make other words by mixing up letters according to their sounds. The letter 'r' makes a rrr sound. 'T' makes a tih sound, and 'e' can make an eh sound or an ee sound."
